Annie Mac is probably one of the most anticipated DJ to grace the decks in Preston. We finally have her playing for two of the most exciting and diverse club nights around, FWAP! & Reclaim The Dancefloor. Annie's show on Radio 1 began in July 2004, when, working as an assistant producer on Zane Lowe's show, she impressed Radio 1 bosses with her demos and her determination.Since then her show has gone from strength to strength. Annie Mac's show on Friday nights on Radio 1 has attracted a host of loyal followers from around the world and sees her play the cutting-edge dance music which she has become known for. Annie has established herself firmly as part of Radio 1's specialist output.Annie is also a talented club DJ and is booked regularly to play the UKs most credible clubs. Annie has just completed her annual DJ tour 'Annie Mac Presents' which she has hosted for 3 years running. Annie personally chooses the line-up of DJs for her tour, both established and up-and-coming to play in her favourite clubs across the UK. 2009 has seen Annie DJ at more festivals than ever, plus regular dates in Ibiza and around the world. Her TV work has seen Annie contribute regularly to BBC2's The Culture show, reviewing new music releases. She has also done work for MTV2 presenting 'Gonzo'. In October 2007 Annie helped launch BBC Switch, the BBC's offering for 12-16 year olds. It was announced that Annie would front Switch, a brand new Sunday night Radio 1 show, and co-host a new weekly music TV show 'Sound' alongside Nick Grimshaw on BBC2 every Saturday afternoon.Since her show began, Annie has gone from strength to strength, her show becoming part of the audio fabric of the nation on a Friday night. From the end of September 2009, Annie began to host the prestigious Friday night 7-9pm slot, taking over from the legend that is Pete Tong. She also continues to co-present Switch with Nick Grimshaw on Sundays from 7-10pm.

FWAP 6 Presents... Reclaim The Dancefloor with Annie Mac (BBC Radio 1) / Doorly (Ibiza Rocks) / D.O.D (Mixmag Resident)Saturday 19th February @ 53 Degrees

www.lancashirestyle.co.uk Page 06

At only 22years old, D.O.D has achieved things that other aspiring DJs could only imagine. His hardworking, non-stop approach to DJing has finally paid off with D.O.D receiving a huge two page spread in October issue of leading dance magazine MIXMAG. This was following on from becoming the ‘Mixmag / Blackberry / Don’t Stay In - International DJ 2010’ which becoming Mixmag’s resident for the week in Ibiza conquering the likes of Ibiza Rocks, Reclaim the Dancefloor at Eden& the infamous Bora Bora Beach as he brought his unique, in your face turntable wizardry performing a mix of House, Techno, Electro, Breaks, Drum & Bass, Dub-step, Hip-Hop, Indie with lots of acapellas thrown in, as he firmly rocked the White Isle.

D.O.D is considered one of the most exciting new talents to come from dance music. His impressively ludicrous style of DJing can only be described as ‘Jump-Up Electro with the Unexpected’ with the talent to showcase his performances using 3-4 CDJ'S, DJM800 an EFX1000/Kaoss Pad 3 to create his unique sounds. His main room edits have been taking clubs by storm, giving a large majority of his tracks that little something different, making every set unique.

D.O.D has recently been signed to one of the country’s hottest new indie labels, ‘Gash Digital’. With various tracks and remixes already released and his debut EP ‘No Smoke’ due for release at the end of November, 2010 is set to be a busy year for the rising star. Two of his tracks on the forthcoming EP are being supported and played by house legend, Laurent Garnier. On the production front, like with his style of DJing, D.O.D breaks the rule-book and doesn’t stick to one genre of music. This open-minded attitude allows D.O.D to produce and remix anything from house, to hip-hop, to drum and bass, to dub-step, electro, breaks or even old party tunes.

D.O.D is resident and co-promoter for some of the hottest club nights in the North of England such as ‘FWAP!’ a very diverse monthly club night at 53 Degrees in Preston. ‘Lancaster Loves' at The Sugarhouse, again a very diverse club night which has a ‘no holds barred’ approach to the acts they book and the musical direction they go with.  These residencies enable D.O.D to play alongside the biggest artists in the industry, and just this year alone he has DJ’d with the likes of Annie Mac, Kissy Sell Out, Chase & Status, Pendulum, KraftyKuts, Plump DJs, Scratch Perverts, Grooverider, Shy FX, N-Type, Doorly, Benga, Rusko, Faithless, T.C, Example, The Cuban Brothers, The Whip  + Many More. D.O.D has gained praise from some of the industry greats such as the Mixmag editors, Mistajam, Kissy Sell Out, Netsky, Freemasons and Grooverider; all of them commenting on his enthusiastic and energetic nature behind the decks along with his precise but inventive use of CDJs.

D.O.D’s ability to play so many different styles of music has seen him become one of the most interesting and inventive DJs to hear, and watch for a long time. Whether he’s playing a House warm up set, a pumping House and Techno peak time set, a Dubstep and Drum and Bass set or even and all out student mash-up frenzy. Witness the turntable wizardry for yourself!D.O.D is a DJ that must be seen first-hand, and not to be missed.

Doorly is without doubt one of the most technical and creative DJs around. We guarantee that you will be completely blown away by his DJ sets. What do Ibiza Rocks, Wax:On, Metropolis and Reclaim The Dance Floor all have in common? The cream of international DJ line-ups? Legendary tales of debauchery? A clutch of awards and critical acclaim? Yes, yes, and yes, and one more important ingredient; genre-hopping resident and rapidly rising UK producer/DJ talent, Doorly.

www.lancashirestyle.co.uk Page 07

Presiding over an electronic melting pot of techno, electro, Futureg Garage, drum'n'bass and dubstep doused with hip-hop and splashes of indie; Doorly's movement behind the decks is relentless. Scratching and splicing riffs, loops, beats and bass to form a sonically seamless, mash-up masterpiece as seen on his recent Radio 1 mini-mix for Annie Mac; it's understandable that Doorly is often described as 'an old school block party DJ using new school technology'.In turn, Doorly landed residencies at Wax: On, Metropolis and Ibiza Rocks where he also now presents the Ibiza Rocks Podcast. More recently, he's also added Manumission's new Ibiza techno / dubstep creation “Reclaim the Dancefloor” @ Eden (A night that he also programmes) to the list and earned a regular place on Radio One’s ‘Annie Mac presents⋯’ tour; as well as Zane Lowe’s “DJ Hero” tour and regular upcoming sets for some opf the UK’s leading clubs including Chibuku & Manchester’s “Warehouse Project”. With him, his usual epic DJ set up: 3 CDJs, 2 x 1210s, an EFX unit and a Pioneer 800!On the production front, Doorly's now slouch either with recent remixes for artists including the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Basement Jaxx, The Prodigy, Calvin Harris, Groove Armada, Kanye West, Marina & The Diamonds and Mstrkrft. All crafted in Doorly’s inimitable, genre defying style, from techno and disco through electro to dubstep & back again! Doorly's remixes have earned heavy radio 1 spins from the likes of Annie Mac & Pete Tong, Zane Lowe, Rob Da Bank & Annie Nightingale as well as being an omnipresent force at the top of the Hype Machine charts. With 2 essential mixes in the bag and gigs all over the world, we are very proud to bring Doorly to Preston.

EXAMPLE playing @ 53 Degrees, PrestonWednesday 23rd February7.30pm

Example is a rapper from Fulham, West London in the United Kingdom. Formerly signed to The Beats label run by Mike Skinner (The Streets). His first album, a mix-tape called "We Didn't Invent The Remix" Feb 2007 feature's samples from a diverse mixture of artists including Lily Allen, The Rolling Stones, José González, Britney Spears on the Infamous Toxic Breath. He followed that in Sept 2007 with his official debut album, (released on The Beats) called "What We Made" produced by Rusher. which was received well by the British public.

After releasing three singles through his own label "All The Chats", including the original 7" version of "I Don't Want To" in January 2006, Example received attention from Pete Tong, Zane Lowe and others at Radio 1. Example also caught the attention of people at four major record labels – perhaps most significantly Mike Skinner (of The Streets), owner of The Beats label.

After signing a deal in April 2006 with The Beats, Example put out a response to Lily Allen's No.1 hit "Smile" entitled "Vile" and received Radio 1 airplay from Zane Lowe, Jo Whiley and Chris Moyles. His first 'proper' release on The Beats was "What We Made" in November 2006.

Example's second official Beats single entitled "You Can't Rap" was released in March 2007, followed by a re-release of "I Don't Want To" on 11 June 2007. "I Don't Want To" was followed by the single "So Many Roads" (famously sampling The Carpenters "We've Only Just Begun") which eventually turned out to be the opening track on Example's full-length studio debut. After the demise of The Beats label at the end of 2007 Example self-released his next single "Me + Mandy" on 10 March 2008 through his original imprint All The Chats.

Emily Smith playing @ The Met, BuryFriday 25th February8.00pm

Emily Smith is a leading light of the contemporary Scottish folk scene. Her powerful, clear vocals have gained her award winning, worldwide recognition. As a songwriter Emily has been likened to “"a Scottish Joni Mitchell"”, but as a collector she is equally adept at presenting fresh and evocative interpretations of traditional songs. She has worked with artists such as Richard Thompson, Beth Nielsen Chapman and Eddi Reader. Recent TV appearances include Transatlantic Sessions 4 and BBC Songs of Praise.2011 sees her launch Traveler's Joy a stunning new album of songs written and gathered on the road featuring an international flavoured line up of guest musicians.

“"As far as I'm concerned she can walk on water"”Mike Harding, BBC Radio 2

“"Smith could become to Scottish folk what Joni Mitchell is to its Californian cousin"”Q“"Smith deserves to become yet another

new folk celebrity"”The Guardian

Son of folk rock royalty Richard and Linda but don't let the good manners, pretty melodies and folk legacy fool you. Teddy Thompson is a seething ball of malcontent brought up on a diet of classic country music, merging the writing skills of Dad with the vocal grace of Mum; not a bad start. Carefully avoiding a tacky Nashville twang, here are real songs of heartbreak; bitter lyrics and intricate pop. Introspective maybe but never dreary... with echoes of U2, Springsteen and Jackson Browne, there's plenty of foot-stomping to go with the melodrama.

Tell us about yourself?

My names Jamie Brewer, I'm 20, been playing guitar for 6 years, started with electric and moved onto acoustic after 4 years, and pretty much live for music.  What are your music influences?

ACDC were the band that got me into guitar, well electric anyway. I remember the first time I was properly pushing myself to learn something, was after I'd heard Black Dog by Led Zep, in some guitar magazine, I spent all afternoon trying to learn it, that feeling is what keeps me interested in guitar. Knowing I can do better. Big influences, for my acoustic stuff anyway, I'd say Andy Mckee, James Blackshaw, Antonio Forcione, John Smith, Antoine Dufour, John Butler, Jimmy Page, anyone who has a really strong sense of rhythm and melody. It's pretty much the two most important things I think in music. Something memorable rather than technical. You don't look like the sort of person who would cover Lady Gaga? Well I'd been playing at the open mic night in Preston, and it was one where it seemed the audience digged  the covers more than the originals, and after I'd played, the owner of the place came up and said is there any chance of me doing some more up to date covers, like stuff that was in the charts, so I sat down and just worked out that,

OPEN MIC NIGHTEvery week we visit open mic nights throughout the county and sit through the highs and lows of what people call talent. Every once in a while someone or something special appears on stage. Every month we visit The Continental for an intimate night of entertainment in the Snug. Most recently we found Jamie Brewer, a man who plays a guitar in a way we have never seen before, Jamie played a host of songs including covers and his own written material to a completely tranced audience so we just had to interview him.

Who says long haired, bearded men can’t play Lady

Gaga.

its mostly a crowd pleaser, the only part I like is the chorus, the rest of the song has a really weak melody so its a bad arrangement really. I'm open to any arrangement really, so long as its got a good hook in it somewhere, like the chorus of Pokerface.

What do you think of the music scene in Lancashire?

Well I can't really speak for all of Lancashire, as I only really know Preston well. But from what I've seen in Preston its pretty amazing. There's such a good variety of stuff going on at the moment, bands like Population 4 are amazing for the rock side of things, then theres bands like Storm Corporation, and Without Motive for the metal. And then theres further variety with the acoustic scene, Tom Metcalfe, Katie Ryan, Bill Orrick, all amazing acts from Preston, outside of town like Blackpool you've got people like Steph Fraser and Rae Morris emerging, who're incredibly talented. Do you have any favourite local bands or artists? Rae Morris, Mobius Loop, Laura Bailey, Alex Hulme, Karima Francis, Seamus Mclaughlin Favourite bands nationally? Lost prophets, Kids In Glass Houses, The Blackout.

“I play weird acoustic stuff”

www.lancashirestyle.co.uk Page 10

How would you describe your music to people? Well at the beginning of every gig I usually say "I play pretty weird acoustic stuff" so probably that, I don't know, I don't like describing it, it sort of puts a pin on it, and means you end up generalising and sticking to that style, without the genre defining labels I end up playing whatever I love rather than what I think would fit within a certain genre. It's a sort of weird view I guess... Where can people here your music or buy your music?  www.myspace.com/jamiebreweracoustic www.facebook.com/jamiebreweracoustic Are you a part of band, if so which one and who is it made up of? Yeah I'm in a band called Defy The Sky, its nothing like my acoustic stuff, totally different, everyone who's heard both are always saying how different it sounds. But I probably love doing the band stuff more, its the whole group thing, y'know you and some mates against the world. It's incredible, plus the feeling when it all goes right is perfect. Theres 5 of us in the band, typical rock band line up. One singer, 2 guitarists, bassist and drummer. The easiest comparison would probably be lost prophets or kids in glass houses. Links for that are... www.myspace.com/defytheskywww.facebook.com/defythesky

“The only thing i’ll stick to is not playing Glee Covers, it

drives me insane”

You don't exactly play the guitar the traditional way, when did you discover you could do that, and how long has it taken you to practice to play the guitar in that way?  The percussive stuff I sort of stumbled across by mistake, I saw a video of Justin King's Knock On Wood, and decided as soon as I saw it that I had to do it. I'd always been interested in trying to do something a bit different. And with the whole percussive element, I'd never seen anyone doing it, so it was kind of mind blowing at first, I spent literally weeks trying to my left and right hands from playing at the same time. As a guitarist its natural instincts to move your right and left hands at the same time, picking the note with your right hand and fretting with the left, but adding the percussive element you have to remove that instinct and it took weeks to get rid of it, as by that point I'd been playing guitar conventionally for 4 years. The 'lap tapping' style, I'd seen done by John Smith, to a very a high standard, and also a support act of John Smith's called Dan Melrose, who was nowhere near as good as Smith, but at the time I didn't feel it was worth adding to my set. But like 6 months down the line I saw some guy drunkenly doing it at an open mic, and it was so annoying, because he got a lot of credit for it, but I knew how well it could be done. So I decided to learn to do it, just by watching guys on the net doing it, youtube has been an absolute godsend, I'd just watch my idols on repeat until I'd got it.

Do you have any musical goals?

Only to continue pushing myself as much as possible, I'd like to share the  bill one day with someone like Andy Mckee, that'd be incredible, but thats literally the sort of dreaming side of things. I'd like to really just make a living doing what I love.

Who is your most hated musician? I couldn't really say to be honest, opinions change all the time, people change, whatever I hate right now, could be completely different next week(and probably will be). The only thing I'll always stick to not liking is the Glee covers, mainly because you get people saying "oh thats that song by Glee" and it drives me insane!

ARIES (March 21st - April 20th) TAURUS (Apr 20th - May 20th) GEMINI (May 21st - June 20th)This is the time, dear Aries, to embrace more of life with lucky Jupiter in your sign until June, which only happens every twelve years. It's an excellent period for starting new long-term projects, and for others to see you in a very positive light. February is a sociable month for you one in which being part of a team brings you the most success. Share your time, ideas, and expertise now. Networking efforts pay off, higher ups are pleased with your work, and your inner confidence comes shining through.

You're caring a lot more about your public or professional image in February, dear Taurus. If there are problems with authority figures, co-workers, or your reputation, you are likely to take things to heart, and this sensitivity might get you in the middle of some conflicts this month. You are bound to be working exceptionally hard, and your pride is wrapped up in what you do. It's a time for showing your competence. Still, the urge for adventure and new experiences is strong, and you're likely to indulge yourself in your time off.

You are entering an exceptionally friendly period of your life, dear Gemini. The major key to your success now lies in the expansion of your social circle or network. Shar ing your expert i se with associates, free of charge, can aid you in furthering your career goals, and can boost your personal popularity. You are filled with ideas for future projects, and while some of them are likely to pay off down the road, it's better not to spread yourself too thin. Instead, focus on just a few projects and give your all to them.

www.lancashirestyle.co.uk Page 20

CANCER (Jun 21st - Jul 22nd) LEO (JUL 23rd - Aug 22nd) VIRGO (Aug 23rd - Sep 22nd)You are entering a stellar period for your career and reputation, dear Ca n c e r . Yo u may r e c e i v e recognition for the work you do, as others are admiring your work ethic. Higher ups are looking upon you very favorably, making it an excel lent t ime for expanding professionally. Your intimate life speeds up in February. There can be some conflicts having to do with money, particularly with a partner or ex-partner. However, your reasoning and negotiating skills step up a notch this month, and this helps you to resolve problems quickly and fairly.

Relationships are your priority this month, dear Leo, although there can be some conflicts to deal with before you can move forward with a clean slate. Consider higher education options or other forms of useful training at this point in your life, in order to improve your professional skills so that you can better take advantage of the stellar opportunities to expand your career coming in the latter part of the year. You may not be very hard-working this month, as there can be restlessness for new experiences and impatience with routine.

February is a month for energetic work, analysis, re-organization, and fixing problem areas in your life, dear Virgo. However, it's also a t ime when your powers of attraction run high and others are seeing you for your more charming qualities. The desire for deeper connections is strong now.
