Lifelong Learning and Back to SchoolSchools are wonderful places of energy and hope, sometimes described as four walls with the future inside. At LMS, there is also the recognized energy of the Spirit as we are convened by Christ, our center.

This summer I looked at some old textbooks dating back to 1875 and noted how many “facts” are no longer true. Some countries and empires that existed in 1875 no longer exist and there are new ones in their place. The United States has more states, and Pennsylvania’s ranking for population and commerce have also changed. Looking at old books quickly makes the case for schools to teach students to be lifelong learners.

There is a reason to teach some facts, but there is a greater reason to teach the following, as articulated by the National Association of Independent School Opinion Leaders:

• Skills and values • Critical thinking and problem solving• Collaboration across networks • More international networking and less parochial • Agility and adaptability• Imitative and entrepreneurship• Effective oral and written communication• Accessing and analyzing information • More green and less wasteful • Curiosity and imagination that lead to innovation

Minicourses, which are featured in this issue of Bridges, are a part of the educational program that makes LMS unique and provide opportunities to learn the 21st century skills mentioned above. These opportunities produce significant positive energy and help our students develop lifelong learning skills. In addition, many minicourses enable our students to grow in “curiosity, wonder and awe,” as called for in our Graduate Profile.

Since they began in the mid-1970s, minicourses have been a valued and important part of the LMS curriculum as a way to give students a chance to learn beyond the four walls of their classrooms and develop deeper relationships.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNINGM I N I CO U R S E S

As Lee Thurber’s minicourse group finished up their daily devotions and prepared to head out for another day of exploring the Grand Canyon, their tour guide mentioned that their next stop, Deer Creek, is a great place to be baptized.

The gorgeous waterfall falls into a small, calm pool that is roughly waist-deep. The group was planning to make a stop there anyway for a dip, but the moment became much more special.

“The kids had all day to think about it and then, that afternoon, two of them decided to be baptized,” Thurber said.

The experience was just one of several special moments during the school-sponsored trip at the end of the May that allows students to get out of the

classroom and partake in experiential learning.

LMS holds minicourses every other year and offers a wide variety of activities for students to choose from, ranging in price, location and interest.

Mini courses are designed as a way for teachers to provide an educational experience for students beyond what is prescribed in the classroom curriculum.

Since they began in the mid-1970s, minicourses are a highlight for both students and faculty and create some of the most memorable moments of a student’s high school experience.

This year was the third time Thurber took a group of students to hike and backpack at the Grand Canyon.

“I love the outdoors and to have an opportunity to take students to a place where they are unplugged, there are no cell phones, no technology, reminds me of when Jesus went into the wilderness,” Thurber said. “That’s what we’re doing, leaving your comfort zone, leaving what distracts you, and being forced to think about the burdens you’re carrying and not only see one of God’s greatest creations, but to have the chance to think about it.”

Thurber hopes that the students on his minicourses will not only go home with tangible skills of how to live in the wilderness or cook from scratch, but that they will see the trip as another step in their journey with God.

Students on Lee Thurber’s Grand Canyon minicourse take a break from hiking to bask in the beauty of God’s creation.

“I’ve done

three theater

minicourses,

including twice to

the Shakespeare

festival in Canada.

One of the things

I enjoy is that it’s a chance to

develop and take relationships

with students to a different

level. On a 10-hour bus ride,

you get into conversations or

end up playing games that you

wouldn’t necessarily have time

to do in the classroom setting. ” - Dean Sauder

While some minicourses focus more on student growth and experience, others are service-oriented.

Duane Evans, who has helped organize minicourses in recent years, said the thank yous the school receives for the work done by students is endless.

This past spring, Evans ran a combined service and overnight canoe trip at Camp Hebron.

“It has been the best of both worlds,” he said.

After helping the camp prepare for its busy summer season, the group embarked on an overnight canoe trip.

“Our first night together was spent in a two-hour discussion of what it really means to be a Christian and how do you relate that to others,” Evans said. “It was great.”

Several teachers agreed that getting to interact with students on a deeper level and seeing them open up and create new friendships with other students is one of the best parts of mini courses.

Michael Charles led a backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail for the last two minicourses.

“Both times the students didn’t know each other very well when we left, but everyone came back feeling like a family,” he said. “Something magical happens when you create the right social context for sharing. I see students open themselves up to others in a way that seems to happen most naturally in the midst of shared experiences.”

•••The minicourse program has been

discussed and revised several times throughout its four-decade history at LMS.

In the early years, administrators discussed holding them every year versus the current every two years design.

In 2010, administrators discussed the possibility of dissolving minicourses and creating an alternative.

The strengths of continuing the program included the out-of-classroom learning,

“I think

minicourses are

one of the best

opportunities

that LMS offers.

Between the

unique mix

of students that end up on a

trip and the variety of course

offerings, the experiences really

can’t be replicated.” - Michael Charles

Lake many years

ago. We camped

service opportunities, connecting with the broader church and building community and relationships.

“It was very clear that there was a long, rich history of minicourses,” high school principal Elvin Kennel said. “We needed to modify it, but clearly the students valued it and teachers valued it. It was more about the amount than whether it was a good idea.”

As a result of the discussion, minicourses were reserved for juniors and seniors and new “grade experiences” were created for freshmen and sophomores. This past year, students at the Lancaster Campus middle school also participated in outdoor and cross-cultural education that stretched their creativity.

Superintendent J. Richard Thomas said minicourses and grade experiences are unique opportunities provided by LMS during a time when many schools are needing to cut back on educational trips.

“Minicourses have enabled students to learn more about a special interest, explore Lancaster County, or travel to an overseas location,” Thomas said. “Through planning and participation in minicourses, students have learned to know each other better, developed

leadership, participated in service and grown in their faith.”

For Thurber, there’s no doubt mini courses are teaching values and creating memories that will last with students throughout their lives.

“You can’t learn everything in the classroom, so mini courses provide an exposure to new environments and vocations and allow for a new understanding,” Thurber said. “It’s the highlight of my year and of the best

This sheet lists the minicourses that were offered in 1976, the first year of the program, along with the teachers leading each one, the number of students and the cost.

Grade experiences: Left: Sixth grade students had a chance to test their skills during an outdoor education unit. Center: Seventh and eighth grade students spent three days learning about identity by making masks, food and videos as part of the experience. Right: Freshman interacted with residents from Landis Homes Retirement Community by either writing them letters or playing games with them.

Seeing the world in the summer

LMS teachers Brett Hartzler and Xiaodong Fan took students to Argentina and China, respectively, this summer to give them the opportunity to experience those cultures firsthand.

To LMS Spanish teacher Brent Hartzler, there’s no better way for his students to become fluent than to fully immerse themselves in the culture.

That’s why Hartzler has been leading student trips to Cheole, Cheol, Argentina since 1994. His family is from the town, so Hartzler is very connected with the community and is able to share that with his students.

He said that he believes after students get two or three years of classroom experience, the next step is for them is to get their feet wet by visiting a Spanish-speaking country and staying with a host family.

“It gets them over the hump of being afraid of making mistakes,” he said.

The July trip to Cheole Cheol is during Argentina’s winter break, so the other young people from the local Mennonite church are not in school and the LMS students can join them for a Mennonite youth retreat.

The 18 students that went on this year’s trip were in for an extra treat since the trip coincided with Argentina’s impressive run to the final in the Fifa World Cup.

As a teacher, Hartzler said he especially enjoys watching the growth in his students’ speaking abilities as they spend time with their host families.

Hartzler has had several students who have returned to Cheole Cheol. This year, 2014 graduate Tyler Newman, who wants to become a high school Spanish teacher, stayed in Argentina to start a year of study and service in the country.

“When the students go a second time, they just go with this incredible enthusiasm to see the people they’ve met,”

Seeing the world in the summer

Hartzler said. “That enthusiasm is contagious and rubs off on the other students.”

During the summer, Chinese teacher Xiaodong Fan also organized and led students on a trip to China.

The first part of the trip involved the students staying and living with Chinese high school students and their families.

Fan said that when they arrived at Hongling High School, the group received a “royal welcome.”

“They were all excited and met and chatted with us in Chinese and English,” he said.

While at the school, the group participated in wrapping dumplings, sitting in the school choir and playing basketball.

The trip also included several sight-seeing trips, including the chance to walk part of the Great Wall of China and a four-day cruise on the Yangtze River, the longest river in China. During the cruise, the group also explored Three Gorges and passed through the biggest dam in the world, Three Gorges Dam.

Opportunities like these trips help connect LMS students to the rest of the world and develop new global relationships. Superintendent J. Richard Thomas said that having LMS teachers who have such solid relationships in other countries enhances the experience.

“LMS global trips are often unique because they connect with places in other countries where LMS staff members have either lived, or are with schools where we have had connections for a long period of time,” Thomas said.

Hartzler sees the trip as a way to mix his worlds of work and family. This past summer, his oldest daughter got married while the students were in Argentina, so they all joined the celebration and helped serve during the reception.

“One thing I appreciate about LMS is so many of our teachers have international experience, they studied abroad or lived abroad, and it widens their worldview,” he said. “For students to be able to do that in their high school years is tremendous. If we can offer these types of cross-cultural experiences, it’s all for the better because it broadens their world.”

“Lancaster Mennonite

School has been the place I’ve

called home since I transferred here

as a junior in 2012. Looking back on all the

experiences that I have been through the last two

years, this school has encouraged me to discover

my capabilities as a student, a leader and most

importantly, helped me to become a better person.

As I step closer and closer to the next stage of my

life, all the trust and grace that I have experienced

in this school are my treasures that I will carry for

life and will help keep me in the right track of

my career and righteousness.”

“Coming into my freshman year of high school, I was slightly apprehensive. Up until eighth grade, my mom had home-schooled me, but since my dad teaches at LMS, I decided to follow in my siblings’ footsteps and switch for my four years of high school. The transition was not the easiest one, but looking back, I know I am more prepared for college and life outside of school because of my experience at LMS. The academics stretched me, but the passion that some of the teachers have for their subjects and their students made the learning process enjoyable. Furthermore, I had the op-portunity to engage in multiple extracurricular activities that helped me advance interests that I already had, such as art and volleyball, and experiment with new ones, such as run-ning track and singing with Campus Chorale. My parents have taught me by example what it is to live a life devoted to God, and many of the values they instilled in

me were reinforced at LMS. I may have taken my experience at LMS for granted at times, but I know the things I have learned and the people I have met in the last four years will continue to influence me positively in the years to come.”

SENIOR PRESENTATIONSIn the last few months of their LMS careers, all seniors give a presentation that reviews their PreK-12 education based on a portfolio maintained throughout the years. The presentations include memories, challenges and dreams for the future and are shared with family, friends and teachers. Here are several excerpts and photos from several members of the Class of 2014.

Aaron Mishler takes a moment to pose with his family after giving his senior presentation. Mishler said his family has helped shaped him into the person he is today.

“As a sophomore, I certainly did not want to move to Strasburg, Pennsylvania and I definitely did not want to once again be the new kid at a new school. I was coming from Moscow, Russia where I was very happy. I loved all my friends and did not want to say goodbye. Also, the experiences we encountered living overseas were amazing. As a missionary kid, we had lived in a number of countries and had visited more countries than we could count. I dreaded my first day at LMS, but I soon became involved in a number of activities at school, particularly sports. The girl’s tennis team was my first introduction to LMS and I ended up making amazing memories from each tennis season, especially my senior year.

Lancaster Mennonite has truly been an awesome part of my life, despite my negative thoughts about moving at the beginning. My family has also influenced who I am today, and I love it when we all hang out together and just enjoy each other’s company. We have created a number of memories together in the many different places we have visited and lived. Leaving LMS will be bittersweet. The future is exciting and new with many different experiences in store. I am so grateful to the LMS family for all they have done to make me and others feel welcome and a part of this unique community. “

— Rachel Bronkema

“I have had the unique opportunity to attend a Christian school for all 13 years of my education. While attending the Kraybill Campus, I made a lot of great friends and lasting relationships with many of the teachers. My parents gave me the opportunity to choose where I wanted to go to high school, but for me it was an easy decision. I knew that I wanted to follow in my parents’ and older brother’s footsteps and finish my schooling at LMS.I have been truly blessed by my decision. I did not hesitate to get involved around school despite living 40 minutes away. I chose to take advantage of the diversity LMS has in its student population. Over the years, I have thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the different countries and states represented at the school. One of my favorite memories of high school was being roommates with Kassidy Xiao, of China, during our Campus Chorale trip to South Africa. Since Kassidy did not speak English as her first language and the South African people spoke English

with an accent, I often had to interpret between the two. Through the experience, I not only got to learn about South African culture, but the Chinese as well, and then compare them both to my own. My favorite high school experience was my involvement in Campus Chorale, especially our trip to South Africa. I have learned so much from both and can honestly say that I will never be able to look at singing in the same way as I did before. I will forever be thankful to the administration and our director Mrs. Hostetler for allowing us to take part in such a life changing experience. As I looked out among the familiar faces of family, friends, pastors, and teachers I realized how over the past four years I was not only blessed by the experiences and learning in a Christian academic atmosphere, but more importantly by God who placed each one of these uniquely special people in my life. Without their love and guidance I would not have become the person I am today, four years later.”

— Heidi Newswanger

“From Norway, to Ethiopia, to Nashville, to Lancaster, I have had a blessed life. I have truly experienced God throughout my life and my presentation was a way to thank God for all the great people, and experiences He gave me.

Coming to LMS wasn’t something I ex-pected, but I can now say it has been the most amazing and enriching experience of my life. The dorm, and International Students Association have been the most important of LMS. I love diversity and meeting a multitude of amazing people. The independence has taught me to take my faith into my own hands, and I have

loved getting closer to God. “

Lancaster Mennonite School introduced The Blazer Nation this fall, a new alumni athletic club that allows former Blazer athletes to support current athletes. The Blazer Nation is made up of a voluntary group of former athletes and friends of LMS working to keep former athletes connected with LMS and support the school’s mission to develop strong student athletes and leaders.

The first Blazer Nation event was a tailgate on Sept. 26 following a home girls soccer game. The tailgate served as a meet-and-greet with new Athletic Director Jared Yoder, 2003. For more information about how to join The Blazer Nation, visit www. lancastermennonite.org/athletics.

Mike Eby was born with dairy farming in his blood.

He currently owns and operates his family’s 7th generation dairy farm in Gordonville where he works with 52 pure-bred Holsteins. His wife Lynette runs the 40-year-old bed and breakfast in the family’s large farmhouse, and his four children all graduated from or are enrolled at his alma mater.

But the future wasn’t always so clear. When an arsonist set the family barn

on fire, Lynette said she was worried her husband wouldn’t know what to do next. But the tragedy had an opposite effect.

“It strengthened his faith immensely to take what we have and move on,” she said.

After trying out some different jobs, the Ebys got back into dairy farming and Mike picked up a full-time job with Christian radio station WDAC as a sales representative specializing in ag business.

About three years ago, Mike was approached to help create the National Dairy Producers Organization, which works to improve small dairy farms in the United States. He then helped create, and is president of, Family Dairy Farms LLC, which bottles its high-quality milk for sale at Shady Maple.

“He never had a vision of what his life would look like, but always looked for future reference,” Lynette said of her

husband. “He’s always seen the big picture.”

In addition to helping Mike on

the farm and running the bed and breakfast,

Lynette serves as a teacher’s aide for PreK at the Locust Grove Campus. She said it’s a small way that she can invest back in the school that has been such a big part of their family.

“The school has given us financial aid for all these years,” she said. “We value the Christian education that we went through, and we feel it’s valuable to make sacrifices for our children.”

She said the support system and balance LMS provides is just as strong now as it was when they were students. Neither she nor Mike went on to college after LMS, but said their time in high school taught them many life values beyond just education.

“We felt free to be who we were at that time, and we had a set of life skills that we took from the school as we entered into the workforce,” she said.

Lynette said it’s hard to realize how much their lives have come full circle. The relationships they developed as students have turned into lifelong friendships.

The music program that was a big part of Mike and Lynette’s experience

at LMS is now proving to be the same type of outlet for their children.

“Those things are really great for educating the whole child,” Lynette said. “There is just an interest in the whole person and who you are and your relationships.”

Mike, 1990, and Lynette Eby, 1991Coming full circle

The Ebys didn’t know what God had in store for them after an arsonist destroyed their barn, but a strong support system and an unwavering faith helped them become leaders in the dairy farming industry.

When Ty Bair reflects on his years at Lancaster Mennonite School, he remembers something much bigger than classes or basketball games.

He remembers the love and support of the community.

“The teachers really cared,” he said. “You weren’t just this kid that was in the class. They really cared about your future and your relationship with the Lord.”

Bair came from a large family that didn’t have much and he still vividly remembers how one year some teachers held a small birthday party for him with a cake.

“I never had that before,” he said, fighting back tears. “That stuck with me with how I teach kids.”

Now as a social studies teacher with the School District of Lancaster, Bair tries to make that same type of

impact in his students’ lives. Bair has received several awards

for his work as a teacher and mentor. He was named the Wal-Mart regional Teacher of the Year and the Coca-Cola and Dell Teacher of the Year.

In 2013, he won the Essence of Humanity award for his work with Exit Lancaster, an educational mentorship program he began with his friend Shayne Meadows. The award recognizes individuals who go beyond the requirements of their work to demonstrate remarkable human qualities, a spirit of caring and inspiration to others.

Bair said the goal of Exit Lancaster is to help kids create life plans through education.

“We feel like that’s the avenue that’s going to change their circumstances,” Bair said.

The program is not a Christian organization, but Bair and

Meadows are both strong believers and try to show Christ’s love through their actions.

Bair feels Lancaster Mennonite was a huge part of God’s plan for his life of giving back to others.

“Everybody that I came in contact with out there didn’t just preach the word, they lived it,” he said.

He said he wouldn’t be able to do as much as he does in the community with out the unwavering support of his wife Carrie. And while the award recognition is flattering, Bair views it as just another way for him to spread the message of God’s love.

“I’m a Blazer through and through, and getting an award helps to send that message out that I’m doing what I think God put me on the earth to do,”

he said. “If you’re not helping

others, I think you’re just wasting time.”

Ty Bair, 1995‘A Blazer through and through’

After experiencing Christ’s love firsthand through the teachers at LMS, Ty Bair now strives to make that same type of investment in the lives of the students he works with as teacher and mentor.

Work begins on new residence hall Wielding a sledgehammer, several

Lancaster Mennonite students took the first swings at creating the school’s new residence hall on Sept 2.

LMS held a special block-breaking ceremony to mark the start of the school’s latest facilities project at the Lancaster Campus. The new residence hall will be in the second floor of the 2160 building, which is partially owned by LMS and located between the Lancaster Campus and Route 30.

Current students, faculty and staff gathered at the 2160 building to

celebrate the start of the project. Along with gifts from many gracious donors, the residence hall project was funded through efforts by students, including the high school’s annual Student Council Mini-Golf

Tournament, an international meal held by current residence hall students and a class gift from the Class of 2014 toward the purchase of furniture for the residence hall’s great room.

The total renovation, including furnishing, will cost $1.8 million. Part of that will be paid through student residence hall fees during a 15-year time period. The facility will include a great room, music practice room, study rooms and an updated security system that focuses on student safety. Residence hall students come from other areas of Pennsylvania, surrounding states and other countries.

Many of the current residence hall students witnessed the start of the project, with six students getting the chance to break some of the blocks of the building. The project is expected to be completed and ready for student use by January.

Donors and residence hall students are invited to the Jan. 9 dedication and open house.

Thank you for your faithful giving to Give-a-thon (formally Phonathon) this past year. Thanks to your generosity and support for our students, we received more than $155,000 in contributions. For 2014-15, LMS will also be participating in the Extraordinary Give.

What is the Extraordinary Give? The Extraordinary Give is sponsored by the Lancaster

County Community Foundation as a way to encourage giving to approved not-for-profit local organizations. To encourage giving they provide a $250,000 match with the money divided among the approved agencies based on the amount that was given to that agency.

How does Extraordinary Give connect with Phonathon? If you give to LMS during the Extraordinary Give day

this can count as your Phonathon gift and you will not be called during Phonathon. In addition your dollars will be increased through the increased match LMS will receive from the foundation based on your giving.

How can you get involved?Between 12:01 a.m. and 11:59 p.m.

on Nov. 21, log on to www.extragive.org and give to LMS as well as to other

organizations you support.
