Project Accomplishments

• Reduced Latency– Preformed gap analysis between DB (DRL) products and LANCE to identify if LANCE produces

products that may be useful for the EOS DB. AMSR-E see below. No MODIS products were identified for CONUS. (Dec 2010)

– Reduce latencies to 1.5 (Terra) to 2.0 (Aqua and Aura) hours through improvements to EDOS processing for Terra and all LANCE data systems. (Mar 2011)

– Completed prototype testing of AMSR-E direct broadcast data products based upon input received from the GSFC direct broadcast site. The resulting products through L2A were essentially identical to the near-real time products. (Sep 2011)

• New/Enhanced Products– Investigated adding rolling NBAR product for MODIS. No potential user community could be

identified. (Feb 2011)– Generated incrementally-updated (per orbit) AMSR-E L3 products. (Mar 2011)– Generated daily snow maps in LANCE-MODIS for distribution to Dorothy Hall and subsequent

inclusion in several cryosphere web sites (e.g. http://modis-snow-ice.gsfc.nasa.gov/) . (Oct 2011)

– Generated and distributed L1B Band 31 brightness temperature products (HDFEOS and imagery) from LANCE-MODIS. (Jan 2012)

• Data Distribution– Established GeoRSS feeds for all AIRS and AMSR-E data products. (Sep 2011)– In collaboration with the PO-DAAC, investigated the addition of datacasting feeds for LANCE

products. Early prototype testing has begun for MODIS and OMI products. (Sep 2011)

Project Accomplishments

• Rapid Response Integration (May 2011)– Prototype tested the use of multiple instrument/product

imagery by integrating the AMSR-E rain rate data into a WMS client environment. (Jun 2011)

• WMS Prototype (Client and Server)– Re-used some of the Rapid Response system software– Initiated contact with users in the pollution, agriculture, and

fire communities to identify display and product requirements. (Jun 2011)

• Completed initial use case study and identified 50+ products for display in a WMS client environment to support 14 hazards and disasters applications categories. (Aug 2011)

– Developed and deployed WMS prototype version 1 (June 2011) version 2 (Dec 2011)

• Integrated multiple products generated by the LANCE elements (41 MODIS, 8 AIRS, 8 OMI, 5 AMSR-E)

• Acquired AIRS products from the AIRS WMS• Included SEDAC population density data and administrative

boundary data• Included geographic and polar stereographic projections• Experimented with modifying product color tables and

transparencies for several products in order to improve the inter-comparison of data products for several of the applications categories.

– Completed trade study with PO-DAAC to evaluate the performance characteristics of various WMS approaches for serving moderate resolution EOSDIS data. Resulted in the selection of Tiled WMS server. (Aug 2011)

Project Accomplishments

• Global Image Browse System (Worldview + TWMS)

– Established initial Worldview system to display Tiled WMS imagery and replace the present WMS client and presented a demonstration at the Fall AGU (Dec 2011) – Collaboration with PO.DAAC

– Transferred the Tiled WMS server from a PO-DAAC test bed to an operational environment on ESDIS hardware, and transferred operational responsibility to GSFC. (Dec 2011)

– Worldview url: http://earthdata.nasa.gov/labs/worldview/

• Additional tools– Implemented netCDF for MODIS. (Aug 2011)– WMS client products were made available in

jpeg, png, and GeoTiff form. (Sep 2011)– Verified implementation of compression of

LANCE data (Dec 2010)– Investigated use of standard tool sets and

software re-use across elements. Since some LANCE elements already had existing approaches for tools such as subsetting, this standardization was not pursued. (May 2011)

Project Accomplishments

• LANCE web site– Added November 2010 UWG meeting report and charter. (Jan 2011)– Added links for Direct Broadcast data. (Jan 2011)– Added cross linkages of NRT data available from EOSDIS. (Jan 2011)– Added browse products for AMSR-E. The subsequent addition of multiple products into

the WMS client has made browse products available for all instruments except MLS. (Jun 2011)

– Integrated site content into the Earthdata website. This is currently undergoing review (Feb 2012)

Project Accomplishments

• Outreach– Published article in The Earth Observer (Mar/Apr 2011) summarizing the November 2010

UWG meeting. (Feb 2011)– Organized meetings with FEMA to identify their requirements. FEMA wanted to use fire

data. (Spring 2011)– Attended and presented at Wildfire meeting– Demonstrated LANCE capabilities to ESA– Poster LCLUC Meeting in Hanoi – The feasibility of forming a NASA-wide IWG for near-real time data was not pursued.

(Spring 2011)– 2010 Fall AGU meeting

• Chaired NRT session convened by Michael Goodman and Kevin Murphy• 8 oral and 29 poster presentations were given• 5 LANCE papers were given by element staff

– 2011 Fall AGU meeting• Co-chaired NRT sessions• 10 oral and 32 poster presentations were given• 7 LANCE papers were given by element staff

• Metrics– The metrics generated were standardized for all LANCE elements and are available

through the LANCE web site (url xxxxxxxxxxx). (Jun 2011)– Rapid Response metrics were added to the LANCE suite for the number of unique users

and the number of images distributed. (Nov 2011)– A plan has been generated for the inclusion of FIRMS metrics. (Nov 2011)

• Agreed to, additional hardware required, C6 processing has not begun

– Investigate adding product formats such as BUFR, netCDF, and GeoTiff for all elements

• netCDF implemented for MODIS. GeoTiff will also be supported by the Tiled WMS. • Evaluate supporting additional formats when user requests are received.

* Excludes metadata** Includes the NRT products from GHRC and MODAPS

Near Real-time (NRT) Distribution provides the amount of data successfully distributed to registered users of the Land Atmosphere Near Real-time Capability for EOS (LANCE). LANCE provides access to near real-time data (<3 hours from observation) from MODIS, AMSR-E, AIRS, MLS and OMI instruments. Metrics for distribution volume, numbers of files distributed and users are presented.
