EXPRESSION

The following portfolio highlights a variety of conceptual and actualized projects from my education and work experience. Each project has been assigned a characteristics word that describes an important driving element that help shaped each design solution. The ability to create expressive architecture relies on the ability to reflect on a breadth of ideas and experiences in order to make dynamic design.

Overall Site Plan

The Pinoleville Pomo Native American Tribe of Ukiah, CAalong with the UC Berkeley Dept. of Architecture partneredto plan a housing community in Clear Lake, CA that would replace their current Section 8 housing community with a 105-acre planned neighborhood that would harbor community interaction and sustainability. The design focused onoptimizing site resources and connecting the architectureto Pomo culture by incorporating cultural symbols.

The following project attempts to reconnect a new Therapy/Culture Center with the existing Berkeley,California neighborhood. Using site analysis, shapegeneration, and the concept of tree branching, anartistic form is synthesized that functionally servesthe needs of the neighborhood while connectingthe site’s culture with the building’s design.

IMPRESSIONThe region around Point Pinole has had a history of strong industrial activity followed by an era of environmental conservation. The following project is a proposed Bay Area Emergency facility dedicated to the environmental protection of Point Pinole and the greater bay region. The design is derived from regional photography that documents the areas industrial past, and using juxtaposition the industrial history makes an architectural impression on the new landscape.

ADAPTATIONArchitectural design should not be stagnant but should adaptto changing environments. This design exercise focusedon understating design adaptation by creating a singular module, repeating the generated shape and forming several module compilations.

The following was a comprehensive structural case study of the Hearst Tower, bySir Norman Foster. It covers aspects of design collaboration such as initial sketching, structural detailing, computer analysis of structure and testing the performance of a physical model. Understanding the design process and a building’s performance can highlight the collaborative efforts by both architecture and engineering in a single form.

INNOVATIONThroughout history technological innovation has facilitatedgreat movements in architecture and design. Merryingtechnology with architecture not only creates rich designbut can also improve the overall builidng performance. The following project is a modular school design inBoulder, Colorado which uses innovations in solar shadingand environmental controls to improve builind performance.

The modular classroom design incorperates a thermal wall system that passively heats the spaceduring the cold Denver winters. The challenge of the thermal wall was allowing the wall to gain energy though direct sun exposure but minimize direct sunlight in the teaching space of the classroom. The following is a direct sunlight performance test on a scaled model.

APPLICATIONIt is essential that skills learned in studio educationbe exercised in real world situations and environments. The following are several projects in which I worked onwhile employed at Kubow&Associates, Architecture. The firm specialized in commercial, residential andhealthcare design around Fresno, California.
