Summer Term
20 April 2018
www.lancingprepworthing.co.uk
Dear Parents,
A new term and the sun is shining at last. The children are loving their break times on the field and
the school is full of smiles! We were delighted to welcome Tianna and Charlie to their new school
on Tuesday morning.
Please note that the children should be in summer uniform now. The uniform list is on the website.
https://www.lancingcollege.co.uk/prep-worthing/uniform
At the beginning of the Easter holiday, a small group of children and Mr Richards and Mr Payne
went skiing with a party of children from Lancing Prep at Hove. They had the most wonderful time
and gave a very entertaining report of the trip in our welcome back assembly on Tuesday morning.
Mr Richards was keen to tell me that they had behaved beautifully and were excellent company – I
would expect no less from them.
As you are aware, Chris Taylor, caretaker here from 1999 to 2016, died last term after a long struggle
with his health. A former pupil, Kieren P, heard about this and was moved to write a tribute for him
which is included in this broadsheet.
I am delighted that Isobel B in Year 7 decided to make a difference and donated a significant
amount of her hair to The Princess Trust. Isobel is now sporting a lovely new bob. Thank you Isobel.
Huge congratulations to all the following for their fantastic achievements:
Will T, Year 7 who has enjoyed more success over the Easter holidays. He won the Grade 2 National
U12 Tournament at Sutton and in the Grade 3 Regional Tournament at the Weald Tennis Club, he
was the U12 singles winner, the U12 doubles winner and the U16 doubles winner. The rankings are
now changed and with his recent wins, makes him number 1 in the county, number 3 in the region
and number 7 in the country for U12 players!
Pippa S in Year 7 who competed in the Dengie Championships over the Easter holidays on Zazu.
She came 12th out of 87 riders aged 10 to 18 years of age.
Zen R, Year 3, who has been picked to represent Sussex in the Chess U9 National Final on 28 April.
Danny B, Year 5, who achieved his ABRSM, Violin, Grade 3 (Distinction).
Max W, Year 6, who achieved his ABRSM, Clarinet, Grade 3 (Merit).
Thomas W, Year 8, who achieved his ABRSM, Clarinet Grade 3 (Merit).
Lewis M, Year 5, who achieved his ABRSM, Piano, Grade 1.
James N, Year 7, who achieved his Trinity College London, Flute, Grade 3 (Distinction).
Erin M, Year 5, who achieved her Level 1 Music, St John Ambulance part of the Grand Prior Award
Scheme
Piper S, 5L, who achieved her Grade 1 Singing (Distinction)
Huge congratulations are also due to one of our Nursery parents. Kenny Tutt won this year’s
‘Masterchef’ and has a huge fan following at the school! I understand that many teachers and pupils
have been glued to the series in recent weeks!

Calling all Normans
Thank you to the Normans who have already taken on our house challenge and returned the tube of
smarties filled with 20p coins. If you haven’t already done so, please could you bring in your tube
on Monday? It doesn’t matter how full it is. We have already begun to raise a wonderful amount of
money for Open Arms Malawi. We really can make a difference.
Also a huge thank you and congratulations to Grace C who volunteered over the Easter holidays
raising £20 which she has kindly donated to our house charity.
Mrs Fudge
Chris Taylor
This was written by a past pupil who is now at Steyning Grammar. As you know, Chris died early
last term and was the school caretaker for many years. He was a much loved member of the school
community.
In memory of Chris Taylor
Chris Taylor was one of the greatest and strongest men I have known. He always supported me from when I
was two years old until I left Lancing. I remember him strapping me into the baby seat on the school bus. Eve-
ry day after school we used to race back to my door when he dropped me off. He used to let me win and even at
the age of two I recognised his compassion and the kindness he shared with me.
We always used to talk at school, we would share jokes. I would help him carry benches or tables at lunch or
assembly - he would never ask me to but I always would. He used to give me advice on how to make friends; I
used to be so shy and he managed to crack my shell like a hammer (conveniently).
I loved his stories. He used to tell me about the Saxons, Egyptians and anything he knew would interest me.
He was an excellent history teacher.
When I found out he was ill I was devastated because I knew how hard he worked at Lancing. There wasn’t a
day where he wouldn’t offer to help move or fix something at school - whether it was oiling a door or moving
some desks. He died after being ill for a long time, I’m glad he has finally found peace and the freedom from
pain he deserved. I know how painful it was for you, Mr T, to not be able to enjoy the things you used to love,
the simple things like a glass of beer, but for you I will raise a glass, I'll raise a glass to the freedom you have
finally received and deserved. I’ll never forget you and it won’t ever be the same without you. Rest in peace.
Kieren P
Next Friday we have our annual LPWA Curry and Quiz night which was snowed off last term! I
always look forward with anticipation to the curry on this brilliant evening but with some trepida-
tion to the quiz as there is significant rivalry between staff and parents!
Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the sunshine!
Best wishes,

Progress Tests in English and Maths
This summer all pupils in Years 1 to 7 will be taking Progress Tests in English and Maths produced
by GL Assessment. Assessing pupils against the skills listed in our ‘Lancing Prep at Worthing Cur-
riculum Directories’ enables us to track the attainment and progress of pupils with regard to our
expectations. The Progress Tests will enable us to track the attainment and progress of our pupils
compared to pupils nationally.
Year 1 will complete paper tests but Years 2 to 7 will complete digital versions using a computer.
English tests combine a test of age appropriate English skills (spelling, grammar and punctuation)
with a test of reading comprehension.
Maths tests comprise questions on topics covered during the year. The tests for Years 3 to 7 also in-
clude a timed mental maths test.
The results of these tests will add to the ongoing assessments made by your child’s teachers and
help us to identify and confirm strengths, weaknesses and ‘next steps’.
In addition to the Progress Tests, pupils in Years 3 to 7 will take school exams in the following sub-
jects:
Exam Dates
Pupils in Years 5,6 and 7 will take French speaking tests w/b 23 April
Pupils in Years 5 and 6 will take English writing exams in English lessons w/b 23 April
Pupils in Years 5 to 7 will have exams and Progress Tests w/b 30 April (timetables on page 5)
Exams and Progress Tests for Years 3 to 4 will take place between 6 June and 12 June
Please ensure you avoid making any routine medical appointments during these weeks as it is not
possible to take exams at a later date.
Revision lists for years 5 to 7 were given out before Easter.
Results will be on your child’s end of year report.

the t-shirt is completely plain without any logos or pictures

Jacob and Sons
Choir Way way back many centuries ago,
Not long after the Bible began
Jacob lived in the land of Canaan,
A fine example of a family man.
Choir and Brothers: Jacob, Jacob and sons,
Choir Depended on farming to earn their keep.
Choir and Brothers: Jacob, Jacob and sons,
Choir Spent all of his days in the fields with sheep.
Choir Jacob was the founder of a whole new nation
Thanks to the number of children he had
He was also known as Israel, but most of the time
His sons and his wives used to call him Dad.
Choir and Brothers: Jacob, Jacob and sons,
Choir Men of the soil, of the sheaf and crook
Choir and Brothers: Jacob, Jacob and sons,
Choir A remarkable family in anyone's book.
Choir Reuben was the eldest of the children of Israel
With Simeon and Levi the next in line
Naphtali and Isaachar with Asher and Dan
Zebulun and Gad took the total to nine
Choir and Brothers: Jacob, Jacob and sons,
Choir Benjamin and Judah, which leaves only one
Choir and Brothers: Jacob, Jacob and sons,
Choir Joseph - Jacob's favourite son
All Jacob, Jacob and sons,
Jacob, Jacob and sons,
Jacob, Jacob and sons,
Jacob, Jacob, Jacob, Jacob and sons,
Joseph's Coat Year 3 Part
Jacob Joseph's mother, she was quite my favourite wife
I never really loved another all my life
And Joseph was my joy because
He reminded me of her
Choir Through young Joseph, Jacob lived his youth again Ba-ba, ba-ba
Loved him, praised him, gave him all he could, but then Ba-ba, ba-ba
It made the rest feel second best Oo-ee-oo, Oo-ee-oo-oo
And even if they were - And Even if they were -
Brothers Being told we're also-rans
Does not make us Joseph fans
Choir But where they had really missed the boat is
Brothers We're great guys but no-one seems to notice
Choir Joseph's charm and winning smile Ah
Failed to slay them in the aisle Ah
And his father couldn't see the danger Ah
He could not imagine any danger Ah
He just saw in Joseph all his dreams come true
Jacob wanted to show the world he loved his son
To make it clear that Joseph was the special one
So Jacob bought his son a coat
A multi-coloured coat to wear
Brothers Joseph's coat was elegant, the cut was fine Ba-ba, ba-ba
The tasteful style was the ultimate in good design Ba-ba, ba-ba
And this is why it caught the eye Oo-ee-oo, Oo-ee-oo-oo
A king would stop and stare A king would stop and stare
Choir And when Joseph tried it on
He knew his sheepskin days were gone
Such a dazzling coat of many colours Such a dazzling coat of many colours
How he loved his coat of many colours How he loved his coat of many colours
In a class above the rest Ah
It even went well with his vest Ah
Such a stunning coat of many colours Ah
How he loved his coat of many colours Ah
It was red and yellow and green and
Brown and blue
Joseph's brothers weren't Ba-ba
Too pleased with what they saw Ba-ba
Brothers We have never liked him Ba-ba
All that much before Ba-ba
And now this coat
Has got our goat
We feel life is unfair
Choir And when Joseph graced the scene And when Joseph graced the scene
His brothers turned a shade of green His brothers turned a shade of green
His astounding clothing took the biscuit His astounding clothing took the biscuit
Brothers Quite the smoothest person in the district
Joseph I look handsome, I look smart Ah
I am walking work of art Ah
Such a dazzling coat of colours Ah
How I love my coat of many colours Ah
Choir It was red and yellow and green and brown
And scarlet and black and ochre and peach
And ruby and olive and violet and fawn
And lilac and gold and chocolate and mauve Ah
And cream and crimson and silver and rose Ah
And azure and lemon and russet and grey Ah
And purple and white and pink and orange Ah
And red and yellow and green and brown and
Scarlet and black and ochre and peach
And ruby and olive and violet and fawn
And lilac and gold and chocolate and mauve Ah
And cream and crimson and silver and rose Ah
And azure and lemon and russet and grey Ah
