How ILTF works
Functions like a hybrid community and operating foundation• Manage an endowment and 26 donor-advised and designated funds• Recruit funds and re-deploy those funds to Indian land issues• Indian Land Capital Company– lending subsidiary
Education on Indian land– past, present and issues.
Assist tribes and individual Indian landowners in using land for economic leverage.
Protect and recover cultural and religious sites.
Address legislative and regulatory issues affecting Indian lands.
Key Pieces for a Tribal GIS
• Ownership
• Soils, topography and hydrology
• Existing infrastructure (roads, pipelines, electrical service, etc.)
• Important Ancillary Information• Leases• Rights-of-Way• Easements• Permanent Structures• Control
Other Considerations
• Land and other tribal staff– Keep the data apolitical
• Tribal Leaders and elected officials• Accept the data as apolitical• Make decisions on the best available data• Balance the political with the practical
• Tribes need to invest in the collection and maintenance of land data
• Consider alternatives beyond the traditional land use designs
