When it comes to the weather, wouldn’t it be nice to simply peer into a crystal ball and know what’s coming our way

for the 2012 planting, growing and harvest seasons? Unfortunately, when it comes to the weather, there is no certainty, however, fortunate for South Dakota’s producers Dennis Todey is the next best thing.

As the state climatologist and an associate professor at South Dakota State University, Todey has more than 14 years experience in using historical and current data along with a variety tools to predict the weather.

“We’re still a long way from being able to tell people exactly what will happen, but we are always under-

standing a bit more about how what is going on today, and what has happened in the past impacts future weather and weather patterns,”

says Todey.

He says reviewing data and looking at trends has always been something he’s enjoyed. “I’m a bit of a data geek, so it’s always fun to look at different trends and understand what is happening. The weather is constantly changing, so this is a very dynamic atmosphere to work in.”

Todey recently sat down with Land & Livestock to answer a few questions and share his outlook for the 2012 growing season.

Question: What has influenced the weather this winter?Answer: The nice weather we’ve been experiencing this winter is the direct result of the two jet streams. They are located, to the north of us, at the U.S. and Canadian border; and to the south of us across the southern U.S. there. These jet streams form at the boundaries between contrasting air masses.

Temperatures have been influenced by the Arctic Oscillation (AO) this winter. When the AO is in its negative phase, we tend to be colder than normal, when the AO is in a negative phase, which is the case this year, the cold air stays north of us. The jet to our north has kept most of the cold air in Canada. At the same time, the southern jet stream has kept most of the moisture to the south of us - as you’ll remember most of the storms this winter were south of us.

Question: How will the dryer than normal fall impact us this growing season?Answer: The biggest area of concern is in eastern third of the state, because that area was very dry this fall. The soil moisture situation is OK in some areas, but no one says it’s great. However, there is no sig-

nificant indication that next growing season will be bad, based on historical data from what happens

in eastern South Dakota after dry falls. The data shows that we tend to not have great

growing season, however if we get some precipitation we can recover and have decent growing season. There are no specific indications that growing sea-sons following dry fall are guaranteed to be bad.

There have not been many nega-tive impacts yet. We just know soils are dry and there is real po-tential for problems this spring if

we don’t get precipitation.

On a positive note, with dry conditions soils warm more quickly. And, with fewer moisture issues, farmers shouldn’t have much trouble getting into their fields at least at the average time or earlier this year allowing for a longer growing season.

Question: What do you predict spring planting weather to be like? How will this impact planting?Answer: I anticipate farmers will be getting into the field to plant much earlier this year than in recent years. Because the dry soils will warm up more quickly, the dry weather can be a positive factor this planting season. And because we don’t have wide-spread deep frost in the ground, unless we get a big change we probably won’t have a lot of snow to get rid of before planting either.

The negative news is in the dry soil situations. We’ll need some precipitation to get surface soils moist, in the eastern part of state. If we don’t get at least average precipitation in the spring we could have some real problems.

Good news on the moisture front is we are currently in a weakening La Nina, which should be over before planting season. During a La Nina summer, we have a higher likelihood of being drier and warmer than normal.

I am still optimistic that we’ll resolve the moisture is-sue as we’re still in the same weather trend which has been wetter than normal for the last four to five years.

Working in the field of agronomy for close to 40 years, Gregg Carlson is a Precision Farm-ing Agronomist and professor teaching in the

Plant Science department at South Dakota State University.

Carlson took the time to answer a few ques-tions on how growers should manage for the dryer than normal weather which may impact growing conditions this season.

Question: What are some management practices farmers can implement to reduce stress on their plants if we have a dryer than normal growing season?Answer: Let me begin by saying that our weather is so fragile. What producers need to realize is we’re always two weeks away from a drought. We’ve all faced multiple years of dry conditions which resulted in significant yield loss.

That being said, growers should take advantage of dry grow-ing conditions this planting season, and get their crop in the ground early.

Almost always we see the harsh, hot weather in late July and Augusts. If farmers can plant early, so the plants receive enough growing degree days to allow for the major fill por-tions of the grain development process to be well on its way

or completed before the harsh weather occurs.

No-till farming is one of the best management practices for drought conditions. It is incred-ibly important for crops in drought conditions. Unfortunately, motivated by the recent high moisture years, many farmers have moved away from this practice and installed drainage tile.

No-till saves us an effective 2 to 3 inches of pre-cipitation. It creates macropores which allows the water we receive to move deeper into the soil profile; making it available to plants later in

the growing season, when yield is determined. Sometimes I think we have a short memory!

Another management technique is to plant small grains.

The day before Valentine’s Day, Morgan Kontz returned home from a 10-day trip to find that her husband, Jason, had surprised her by

building a shelving unit, complete with colorful stor-age baskets for their nursery.

“This is one reason why I love my husband. When-ever I am gone, he always does something to surprise me,” says Morgan, 24, who is expecting the couple’s first child this April.

Morgan met Jason four years ago, after a friend suggested she check out farmersonly.com, an online dating site.

“There was a free three-day trial, so I decided to see who I would meet in three days. When I put my profile up on the website, marriage wasn’t on my mind. I didn’t think I’d find someone and fall in love. I was just looking for someone to talk to and have fun with,” says Morgan, who at the time was attend-ing Purdue University pursuing a degree in agricul-ture education.

Jason’s profile caught her eye and, even though they lived 750 miles apart, the two began emailing.

“She was easy to talk to and we hit it off immediate-ly,” says Jason, who also credits a friend with suggest-ing the website to him.

Their relationship quickly grew. Morgan transferred to South Dakota State University to finish her degree. In 2009 they married. Today, the couple farms with Jason’s two brothers, Brad and Troy and their wives, Kelly and Michelle, and his parents, Ray and Susan, near Colman, S.D.

Born and raised on his family’s farm, Jason, 33, never considered any other career.

“Farming is all I ever wanted to do. I enjoy it so

much that I think I’d do it even if I couldn’t make money,” says Jason, who, together with his broth-ers, raises corn, soybeans, alfalfa and operate a beef feedlot.

In 1999, he and his brothers formed their partnership – Triple K Farms.

“We enjoy working together, so when a neighbor of-fered to lease us some land, we thought it was a good time to form a partnership,” Jason says.

Unlike Jason, Morgan didn’t grow up on a farm. She grew up in a suburb of Indianapolis wishing she lived on a farm. Actively involved in 4-H and FFA, Mor-gan showed horses and sheep and spent her summers

working on the farm where she kept her sheep.

“I had many great role models in 4-H and FFA, and my involvement in those programs sparked a fire in my heart to find a career in the agriculture industry,” says Morgan, who works part time as a substitute agriculture education instructor and spent the sum-mer working as the interim executive secretary for the South Dakota FFA Association.

She and her sister-in-laws play an active role in the family business. They each manage a different aspect of the farm’s bookwork – officing together in a large room above their husband’s machinery shop.

all get along really well. I don’t think I

could have gotten a better family than

I did when I married Jason,” Morgan

says. “My mother-in-law and sister-

in-laws are such a blessing. After we

got married, they took me under their

wings and taught me how to do the

books.”

Along with sharing bookkeeping du-ties, the Kontz women also take turns making dinner. Each of them takes a week.

“It’s a lot of fun. We’re all into sharing recipes – it’s a good way to stay con-nected,” says Morgan, who shares her experiences as a first-generation farm wife on her blog, http://www.sdfarm-wife.blogspot.com/.

Morgan is among a group of South Dakota farm women who participate in CommonGround a grassroots effort to connect farm women with their urban counterparts. Organized by the

United Soybean Board and National Corn Growers Association, Common-Ground provides training, a support network, information and venues to farm women interested in sharing their story with female consumers.

“I used to not put much thought into going to the grocery store and picking up a pound of hamburger and fixing it for dinner. Now, as part of this family farm, I have a new found appreciation for the effort and expense that goes into producing that pound of hamburger,” she says.

Along with meeting up each day for dinner, Jason and his brothers begin each day with coffee. He says the con-stant communication keeps everyone on the same page.

“Since we’re all involved in every aspect of the farm, we are making decisions together every day,” Jason says.

With only a few weeks left before baby Kontz arrives, Jason says he can’t wait to meet his and Morgan’s first child.

“I’ve always liked kids and am excited to be a first-time dad.”

Cheers! Two South Dakota winemakers share their stories

Story & photos by Lura Roti, for Land & Livestock

It wasn’t too many years ago that Jim Schade didn’t know grapes could be grown in South Dakota. Turns out, they can, and

today he and his wife, Nancy, enjoy sharing the story of the South Dakota grape and wine industry with the several thousand visitors who tour their winery and tasting room each year.

“When we tell people 100 percent of the grapes we use in our wine are either grown in our vineyard here or grown within 100 miles of Volga, they ask me the same question I once asked: ‘Can you grow grapes in South Dakota?’ It’s really gratifying to say yes and share the story of South Dakota’s wine industry with them,’” says

the winemaker and co-owner of Schade Winery in Volga, S.D.

Schade learned that grapes could be grown in the state about 15 years ago when he met a grape grower living near Pierre. He and Nancy had recently moved back to South Dakota from Sacramento, Calif., and were looking for local fruit they could use to make wine.

Hobby winemakers for years, the couple missed the tour and tasting outings they used to take

in California’s Napa Valley, so after Schade retired from state government, they set out to recreate a simi-

lar experience by opening a winery in South Dakota.

2The Farm Winery acT

Schade Winery is one of 17 active wineries that manu-facture and sell wine in South Dakota. A relatively young industry, the business of makingwine in South Dakota has grown exponentially since its start in 1996 says Schade, who currently serves as president of the State’s Wine Growers Association.

“Nationally wine consumption is skyrocketing and in

South Dakota it’s no different. Of all the wine sold in South Dakota, South Dakota wine makes up 7 percent of the market – this is as high as any state around us and we’re very proud of this,” Schade says.

Until 1996 the wine industry did not exist in South Dakota because it was illegal to make and sell wine.

“Under federal law you could make 200 gallons a year, but you could not sell this,” says Schade, who under-

stands the law well. In his previous career he worked for the South Dakota Department of Revenue monitoring the collection of liquor taxes.

Four years before the Schades took their hobby to the next level, Eldon Nygaard was busy working on a bill that would make farm wineries legal in the state. In 1996 he wrote the Farm Winery Act, which allowed wineries in the state to become licensed and sell the wine they produced. The act became law the same year.

“The Farm Winery Act was the biggest single thing that happened in our state to launch the wine industry,” says Schade, who supported Nygaard in his efforts.

A state senator from the Vermillion area, Nygaard’s journey to opening the state’s first winery somewhat mirrors that of the Schade’s. He developed an interest in making wine in his high school chemistry class. He learned how to distill in class; went home and built a miniature glass still and made a batch of mulberry wine. That was in 1963.

On a visit to California he realized there was a profit to be had in the wine industry.

Increased moisture and profits have many central South Dakota farmers converting other small grain acres to corn, says Ryan Wolf, regional agronomist

for Winfield Solutions.

“We’ve seen a steady increase in corn acres the last three to four years,” Wolf says. “Return on invest-ment is the big driver. You can grow 75 to 100 bushel corn on acres that traditionally yields 35 to 40 bushel wheat.”

Christi Hand, an agronomist for Midwest Coopera-tives, Pierre, would agree. If 2012 seed sales are any indication, many more acres of corn will be planted in Hughes, Stanley and Haakon this spring. Her seed sales are up about 15 percent over last year.

“The last three years have seen incredible increases in my corn seed sales,” Hand says.

She attributes the dramatic increase to a few things – the recent weather pattern change, corn prices, and the weed control incorporating a Roundup Ready corn into a wheat rotation provides.

“Corn is an easy option to control some of weeds in our wheat crop – which is still the No. 1 crop out here,” Hand says.

Chris Fosheim is one such farmer. The Midland, S.D. farmer and his dad, Vic, manage 5,500 acres of crop ground; raising winter wheat, spring wheat, corn, milo, sunflowers and millet.

They began converting wheat acres to other crops about 10 years ago as a weed control method. Today, he says his reason for planting more corn acres has a lot to do with moisture and cash flow.

Data from Milesville in northern Haakon County shows that for the available records in the years since 1911, the mean, or average, annual precipitation is 19.10 inches. But over the past three years the average has been 22.29 inches.

“With the rain we’ve been getting in the spring and mid-summer – wheat just doesn’t cash flow as well as planting corn,” says Fosheim, 31.

Like most of his neighbors, to better manage mois-ture issues, Fosheim and his dad began no-till farming about 15 years ago. Bob Hall, professor Emeritus of Plant Science at South Dakota State University, says no-till practices influenced the westward movement of both corn and soybeans.

“Over night farmers realized they could plant soy-beans and corn with a drill, that’s when we first saw a decline in oats and barley as more farmers went to planting corn and soybeans,” Hall says.

Even with no-till practices, if it doesn’t rain, farmers take on a large risk by planting corn instead of wheat or sunflowers, says Hall.

“Acres in the middle of the state are at an increased risk, compared to acres in the eastern part of the state – if the mois-ture isn’t there the yields won’t be either,” Hall says.

Wolf says the availability of drought tolerant hybrids plays a role in managing this risk.

“Introduction of more stress tolerant hybrids has al-lowed corn hybrids to push further west. The hybrids are able to pollinate and handle heat and retain kernels after pollination even in stressful situations,” Wolf says.

Fosheim agrees.

“Genetics help. We don’t get a heck of a lot of rain out here, so without drought resistant hybrids we couldn’t plant corn out here,” says Fosheim, of the 75 to 80 bushel yields he received in 2011.

This year he plans to plant an additional 200 acres. He’s not alone in his decision – many Haakon Coun-

ty farmers are following suit according to the USDA National Ag Statistics Service. In 2009 about 8,700 acres of corn were planted and the number of acres almost doubled the next year to 16,800. Although the number of corn acres planted in 2011have not been released, Hand says they were up, and her husband, Haakon County farmer, Terry Hand, 40, says if the gossip mill is correct, corn acres in Haakon County

will be up again in 2012.

“The neighbors I’ve talked with are converting more acres to corn this year,” says Terry, who farms with his brothers, Michael and David.

Like Fosheim, the Hand Brothers aren’t putting all their eggs in one basket. They raise winter wheat, sunflowers, corn, milo and operate a calf/cow and backgrounding operation. Although they plan to plant 800 more acres of corn this spring, if they don’t get the moisture, he says their operation is diverse enough that they will still be OK.

“That’s why we plant four to five different crops. You never know which crop will be the winner for the year. And, if the corn doesn’t make it, we can chop it and feed it to our cows,” Hand says.

2“I learned that vineyards were worth several thousand dollars per acre and thought if land were worth that much, wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could convert some South Dakota corn fields to vineyards,” says Nygaard, of the vision which led him to purchase 160 acres of land near Viborg 30 years ago.

Since 1996 a handful of entrepreneurs have shared Nygaard and Schade’s vi-sion; creating a wine country experience for visitors throughout South Dakota with winery tours, tasting counters and events.

The wine industry not only adds to the state’s tourism options, but it also helps

drive economic development in the rural communities they serve, says Cheri Rath, executive director of the Value Added Agriculture Development Center.

“Wineries provide a variety of employ-ment opportunities for people. They help bring an economic spark to our rural communities,” Rath says.

You can grow grapes in South Dakota.

Professor of Horticulture at South Da-kota State University Anne Fennell has been involved in viniculture since the 1970s. She picked grapes to earn extra money as a high school student. She came back to the fruit, Ph.D. in hand, when she helped a grape physiologist and breeder at the University of Min-nesota identify important characteristics needed in winter-hardy cultivars. Today, the SDSU grape genomist works with plant breeders at the university.

In her research, Fennell works to under-stand the genes behind specific charac-teristics so breeders can use this informa-

tion to develop superior plants.

“Grapes are a long-term plant and very expensive to put in, so we want to de-velop the best varieties for each region,” Fennell says.

Nygaard and Schade rely on Fennell’s advice, and information from grape spe-cialists in other northern states, such as Minnesota, when selecting the varieties they grows in their vineyards, or provide to growers to raise for them.

“We can’t grow what works in Califor-nia. It’s just impossible,” Schade says. “So we rely on grape varieties that have been developed by breeders in South Dakota and Minnesota.”

Grape varieties that grow well in South Dakota and survive the tough winter weather include; Frontenac, La Crescent, Frontenac Gris, Prairie Star, Sabrevois and Marquette says, Russ Bortnem, an airline pilot turned grape grower.

BROOKINGS, S.D. - When it comes to inputs, South Dakota farmers have many decisions to make - what seed variety to select, how much fertilizer to apply and when to spray. All input decisions can impact yields, however, fertilizer application can potentially impact yields the most, says Bob Fanning, SDSU Extension Plant Pathol-ogy Field Specialist, during a recent iGrow Radio interview.

“In order to make good decisions on inputs, it is always a good idea to get some concept of what yield goal you might set for the crop. One of big inputs where yield goal can be used is fertilizer, because the amount of fertilizer and different nutrient ingredients farmers put on a crop is highly dependent on whatever yield goal they are shoot-

ing for,” Fanning said.

Fanning was among the team of SDSU researchers who developed a useful guide, “South Dakota Fer-tilizer Recommendations,” which provides growers with valuable information.

“That really contains almost everything a producer would need to know about fertilizer rates and spe-cific issues relating to how much they can put with the seed,” Fanning said.

Growers trying to set realistic yield goals may want to evaluate recent yield data from the last four to five years for specific crops in each field.

“When looking at the field data, throw out any re-ally low or really high ones that may have occurred

due to drought or really exceptional conditions or anything like that, average the remaining ones that fit in a group and maybe shoot for 10% higher than that,” Fanning said. “This is one school of thought that really makes sense when setting yield goals.”

To learn more or to receive a copy of “South Dakota Fertilizer Recommendations,” contact any SDSU Regional Extension Center, or visit iGrow.org and under the Corn, Soybean or Wheat links select “South Dakota Fertilizer Recommenda-tions.”

The iGrow Radio Network and SDSU Extension bring listeners an informative show each day. For more information on the iGrow Radio Network, or to listen to archived shows, visit www.igrow.org.

BROOKINGS, S.D. - Volatility in the marketplace, and how producers can manage their risk in the midst of these historical swings was the focus of the annual cattle industry market review during the CattleFax "Industry Out-look" presentation at the 2012 Cattle Industry Convention and National Cattlemen's Beef Association Trade Show, February 3, Nashville, Tenn.

Leading off, the primary issues dis-cussed by the CattleFax market analysts were the declining cattle and beef sup-plies going into 2012, after two strong years of high cow slaughter numbers, topping the highest level in nearly 15 years.

"The drought of the Southern Plains has decreased cattle numbers in Texas, Oklahoma and the surrounding states. Texas reported a decline in 2011 of 660,000 head of cows with many of those being shipped to the more feed effluent Northern Plains," said B. Lynn Gordon, SDSU Extension Cow/Calf Field Specialist, during a recent iGrow podcast.

Although Texas and the Southern Plains have recently returned to receiv-ing near normal rainfall, current predic-tions presented during the CattleFax Outlook show this region could turn drier as we move into the late spring and early summer. In comparison, the Northern Plains has experienced one of the warmest and driest winters on record, after nearly five years of cold, snowy winters.

"Not only are low cow numbers starting off the year, but they are also reflected in the likelihood of smaller fed

cattle supplies in 2013 due to a smaller 2012 calf crop," Gordon said. "If heifer retention does begin to unfold, feedlot supplies will be further reduced. More heifers will begin to enter cow herds and less cow slaughter will occur, albeit the moisture levels and weather cooper-ates."

However, despite the decreases seen in cattle numbers in the U.S., increases were witnessed in beef exports, which were up 23 percent in 2011, compared to 2010.

Analysts believe the global market trade added an average of $261 per head to fed-steer prices.

"A robust beef export market im-proved the overall demand for beef, and all projections show exports to likely improve even more in 2012," Gordon said.

CattleFax stated that some of this improvement in the export markets will continue to come if the Japan marketplace continues to move forward with opening up greater accessibility for U.S. beef, creating overall improved beef access to Japan.

"The analysts reported that 2012 could bring record-high prices for all classes of cattle. Calves could average as high as $175 per hundredweight and yearlings will predictably average about $150 per hundredweight," Gordon said. "With these higher prices, feed-yards will struggle to have the margins needed, tightening up their profit potential."

The industry has seen staggering pro-duction cost increases and can expect

to see some moderation in these costs. With these higher costs it has taken a lot of capital to do business. Feed cost increases alone have added $550 per head to the feeding industry and added an overall $16 billion in cost to the industry.

"CattleFax predicts the shrinking cattle supplies and higher input prices will continue to have an influential impact on the beef industry's structure in 2012," Gordon said. "If margins shrink, this may be reflective on re-duced feedlot and packing capacity."

According to Randy Blach, CEO of CattleFax, "As higher prices lead to

increasing market volatility, produc-ers should manage for a margin; don't guess the markets in such volatile times, because we are witnessing how increas-ingly important managing price risk has become to production agriculture. It is easy to see how optimistic things can be as you look at it, I'm thrilled to see the opportunity for the industry to expand the cow herd, over the next several years, but we still need to be mindful of the risks at hand."

BROOKINGS, S.D. - Last year South Dakota produced 104.79 million bushels of wheat from 2.91 million planted acres. With such substantial levels of wheat production seen across the state, it is necessary for growers to take steps in protecting their crop against pests and diseases, says Jonathan Nixon, SDSU Extension Entomologist.

Nixon points to one pest in particular, the Hessian fly, Mayetiola destructor, as the primary pest of wheat throughout most of the United States.

“Historically it is believed that the Hessian fly was introduced into the United States by Hessian soldiers during the Revo-lutionary War while importing straw bedding,” Nixon said. “The Hessian fly was initially observed near a Hessian soldier encampment in 1779 and since then has spread across the country”

hessian Fly 101

The adult Hessian fly is darkly colored with mosquito-like ap-pearance, approximately 1/8-inch long when fully developed. Adults emerge between August and November depending on location and environmental factors (temperature specifically). Mated females oviposit (lay) 250-300 eggs within fall-seeded wheat leaves during their short life span of 4 days. The red,

oblong eggs are found in groups of 2-15 laid end to end just within the upper leaf surface.

Within 10 days of oviposition (egg laying), tiny, translucent, and legless larvae emerge and begin feeding within the leaf. Larvae are not capable of surviving outside of the host plant and, therefore, continue to develop into the adult stage while inside the plant. Larvae damage the plant tissue while feeding. Their mouth parts work much like sandpaper and as they scrape their mouths against the leaf tissue, they suck up the juices released by the plant. Excessive feeding by even a single larva for even a few days can stunt plant growth. As feeding continues, the plant becomes brittle and the leaves take on a bluish green color.

The larvae reach maturity within 30 days of egg emergence depending on temperature and humidity and measure 3/16 inch long. At maturity the larvae form brown pupae or pu-paria, commonly referred to as “flaxseeds”, that are about 1/8 inch long. Overwintering occurs while in this stage and adults emerges between April and May.

ProTecTing WheaT From hessian Fly

Nixon says management of this pest can be difficult to estab-lish.

“Insecticide applications are not typically recommended because the proper timing of these treatments is extremely difficult to achieve,” he said. “In the spring, parasitism can sig-nificantly reduce Hessian fly populations. However, parasitism alone will not protect your fields from Hessian fly damage.”

He says the best way to protect a crop is by selecting and planting certified varieties of Hessian fly resistant wheat, plant-ing after the fly-free date in the fall and utilizing crop rotations are recommended to manage the Hessian fly more effectively.

“Producers should be wary of the Hessian fly and what its damage looks like. This pest is just one reason to stress the importance of scouting your field for pest and disease damage as a method of preventing any major problems before they become a major issue,” said Nixon. “South Dakota wheat pro-ducers have faced this pest in the past. In the mid to late 80’s Hessian fly populations blew up and caused a serious problem for wheat producers. However, that problem was short lived and since then populations have dropped well below any level of concern in South Dakota.”

Nixon says SDSU Extension will do its part to warn producers if the fly once again becomes a problem in the state.

“Throughout the summer Extension agronomists will be scouting for early signs of Hessian fly problems, and will offer reports throughout the summer,” Nixon said.

Wheat growers can keep up with current information by visit-ing iGrow.org.

BROOKINGS, S.D. - The third South Dakota Quilt Doc-umentation Day will be held March 24, at the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum, Brookings, S.D., 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Donations to help with the cost of the documentation are appreciated.

The event is organized by chairperson, Mary Fitzgerald of Dell Rapids, S.D.

Fitzgerald has been conduct-ing this project with assistance from museums and individuals throughout the state.

The South Dakota Quilt Documentation Project is a statewide effort to record quilts in South Dakota that were completed before 1970. The purpose of this project is to develop an ac-curate and scholarly body of information regarding the history of quilters and quilt making in South Dakota and Dakota Territory.

"A reliable history of quilt making provides insight into the life, time, and cre-ative talents of women, and men, who were involved in quilting. It especially provides a window into the past for exploring women's history, the history of sew-ing and textile production," said Carrie Van Buren,

curator of the S.D. Agricultural Heritage Museum.

The data gathered will be available for future researcher involving the history of women in Dakota Territory and South Dakota, the development of the art and craft of quilting, and the textile history of the region.

Documentation days have al-ready been completed in Sioux Falls, Yankton, Mitchell, Wa-tertown, Pierre, Dell Rapids, Burke, and Madison.

Appointments to have your

quilt(s) documented can be made by calling the S.D. Agricultural Heritage Museum at 605-688-6226, or toll free 877-227-0015.

Each quilt owner is requested to bring no more than three quilts to be documented.

If you have a large collection of quilts, Fitzgerald will be glad to make additional arrangement with you for a different time.

Information to be collected includes biographical informa-tion about the quilt maker, in-

cluding photos if available, the style and design of the quilt, documentation of the textiles in the quilt. The quilt will be examined, photographed and returned to the owner. Information about properly caring for quilts will be available the day of the documen-tation or you may contact the museum at any time for information.

This program is sponsored by

Friends of the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum.

BROOKINGS, S.D. - South Dakota's Challenges Since 1960, author talk and book signing will be held March 8, at 7 p.m. at the South Dakota State Agricul-tural Heritage Museum, Brookings, S.D.

A native of Wessington, Charles Rogers has written a history of South Dakota since 1960. A self avowed

"history nut," Rogers spent many years teaching American History and Government in the classroom. Upon retiring from Washington High School in Sioux Falls, he continued pursuing his interest in history by teaching at Kilian Community College for 18 years.

Rogers' new book is an update of the book "Chal-

lenge: the South Dakota Story" by Robert F. Kar-olevitz. Karolevitz's book was published in 1975 and contains 10 chapters. The book's final chapter focused on the 1940s and 1950s with discussions on World War II and the Missouri River Dams.

Rogers' book starts at Chapter 11 and moves readers from the 1960s up to 2006.

Chapters in the book look at energy development, population changes and how they influence school districts and politician, celebrities from South Dakota and a chapter on the state's economic ups and downs.

Books will be available at the signing or before at the Agricultural Heritage Museum Gift Shop. The books are $21.95, plus tax. Museum members receive a 20 percent discount on all books in the Shop.

“I don’t do anything to protect them during the winter – these grapes are developed to withstand the winters,” says Bortnem, who sells all the grapes he raises to Schade Winery.

He explains that his second career got its roots when he and his wife were impressed by the vineyards they saw in California while touring the country in an RV after retirement. Growing up on a farm near Volga, Bortnem and his wife, Laura, decided to start their own vineyard on pastureland along the shores of Lake Campbell where Bortnem remembers his family’s cattle grazing.

“We started growing grapes without knowing anything about it,” Bortnem, 74, says of the labor intensive work.

He and Laura hand planted the 1,500 plants, built the trellises which support the more than 4 acres of plants, and with the help of about 59 friends and acquain-tances, hand pick the fruit each year.

“We have a great time at harvest. My wife furnishes a big lunch after harvest and we all stomp some grapes,”

Bortnem says. “We work hard in our old age. At the end of the day we may be tired and sore – but we’re happy.”

The Bortnems planted their first vines in 2005 and their second batch in 2008. Each year his yields in-crease. In 2011, he harvested 12,200 pounds of grapes.

It takes about three years before the first harvest and about seven years for the vines to mature. Bortnem ex-plains that once they mature, a grape vine’s life expec-tancy is anywhere from 50 to 150 years.

With this kind of longevity, the future of South Da-kota’s wine industry is bright says Nygaard.

“In 16 short years we’ve captured more than 7 percent of the state’s wine market,” says Nygaard, whose son, Leif, is now managing Valiant Vineyards and joins his dad as the winery’s award-winning winemaker. “Win-eries in our state not only sell locally, but ship wine around the world – Valiant ships wine to China and Europe.”
