Welcome

On behalf of our Board of Trustees and team, it gives us great pleasure to welcome you to the LandAid Summer Party 2014.

Tonight provides an opportunity to reflect upon and celebrate all the amazing things the property industry has achieved through LandAid in the last year. Our income grew to £1.7 million, and we now have over 100 corporate partners and thousands of individuals who are uniting to help disadvantaged children and young people in the UK.

The collective generosity and energy of the property industry means we have been able to support a further 25 projects with essential investments in their buildings and facilities, as well as providing free property advice.

LandAid now has over 50 charity partners who provide vital and carefully tailored services to some of the UK’s most vulnerable young people.

LandAid is very proud of our model of partnership with the industry and our beneficiaries. We are leading the way in how charity and business can be integrated - and together, we make a bigger difference.

Tonight is a great way to meet colleagues from across the property industry, see how you can get involved and help us to meet our fundraising target by bidding on our fantastic auction prizes.

Tonight also marks the launch of our new website. So please do take a look and see all the great things we are achieving together as the property industry’s charity.

Wishing you a wonderful evening!

Robin Broadhurst, ChairmanJoanna Averley, Chief Executive

LandAid: uniting to help disadvantaged children & young people

Many young people in the UK are facing a tough future. It is estimated that there will be 3.5 million children living in poverty by 2020 – that’s more than 1 in 4. Over 50% of homeless young people have been excluded from school, 40% have experienced abuse at home and 33% self-harm. A third of homeless young people have also been in care.

For those young people struggling with homelessness, unemployment or a lack of opportunities, the challenges of a rapidly changing world are, quite simply, magnified.

The projects and organisations LandAid supports are often involved at the point of severe crisis in a child or young person’s life.

Each project is unique - but they all provide carefully tailored, sensitive support to young people and their families.

Through the generosity, resources and expertise donated by over 100 partners from across the property industry, LandAid works to break the cycle of disadvantage for those vulnerable children and young people in the UK.

Making a real and lasting impact on young livesEach year, through our grant giving programme LandAid commits over £1 million of funding to projects across the UK. This is complemented by our co-investment programme, where partners match fund a project.

LandAid currently has over 50 active partnerships with charities working with some of the UK’s most vulnerable children and young people. LandAid partners with local charities not just through the donation of grants, but also by helping them to build their capability to deliver a great project and deal with wider property issues, through free property advice given by our corporate partners as part of the LandAid pro bono programme (see page 20).

LandAid only invests where we can add value and increase the effectiveness and reach of a charity partner’s activities and programmes. The projects we support take young people on a journey to being independent and confident about their future.

Some of LandAid’s projects

Roots and Shoots

LandAid is working with the unique Kennington charity Roots and Shoots to help disadvantaged young people in London feel valued and develop a positive outlook for the future. Roots and Shoots provides vocational horticulture training programmes, alongside traditional education. A LandAid grant of £150,000 made in 2012 is funding the conversion of a dilapidated building into a learning centre. This funding is enabling Roots and Shoots to increase their capacity for helping young Londoners by 60%.

“The LandAid funding will provide an educational resource that will be the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ for our charity. The building is at the centre of our site and we very much need these improvements to enhance our educational services.”Linda Phillips, Director

Kinetic Foundation

The riots in Croydon in 2011 highlighted how deep the problem of youth unemployment runs in the town. Kinetic Foundation uses the passion young people have for sport to create positive changes in their lives. In 2013, LandAid helped launch Kinetic’s first ever football social inclusion project with a grant of £15,000. Football sessions are delivered by 60 community role models and each participant on the project is offered a tailored personal development plan. The project reaches 300 young people per session, run three times a week.

“LandAid funding has allowed us to scale up our community engagement and offer a platform for our young people to ‘give back’. Our young leaders offer their experience, guidance and support to others in their community, many of whom are in desperate need of a positive exit route.” James Fotheringham, Operating Officer

Roots and Shoots

Living costs in London are skyrocketing, and living in the capital is becoming increasingly challenging. In this competitive market, long term unemployment can have a severe effect on a young person’s sense of self worth.

Building Lives

LandAid is working with Building Lives, an award winning CIC and registered social enterprise, to tackle the important issue of youth unemployment. With approximately 182,000 construction jobs needed over the next four years, but only 7,280 construction apprenticeships being completed annually, this will help tackle the shortfall, and get more young people into work.

In 2013, LandAid provided a grant of £28,740 to Building Lives to assist the conversion of a Peabody building in Southwark into a construction training academy. Each year the Southwark academy will engage with over 200 unemployed Londoners.

Fight for Peace

Young people living in Newham suffer from an axis of disadvantage. It is an area of high poverty, with 55.7% of young people living below the breadline and astonishingly high crime rates. LandAid is investing in Newham by providing a grant to the local charity Fight for Peace, who use martial arts and boxing to instil discipline and self-respect and provide alternatives to crime and violence. A LandAid grant of £41,431 given in 2013 is funding the expansion and redevelopment of the charity’s premises to enable it to meet demand and work with 1,600 young people each year.

“This investment from LandAid will help us reach out to Newham’s disadvantaged young people and give them a positive focus for the future.” Alex Le Vey, Fundraising and Development Manager

Make a pro bono pledge today! Many of the local charities we support lack the time, expertise or experience to cope with some of the issues that inevitably arise when managing their properties. Our pro bono programme enables them to reshape, sustain and grow their vital services.

It is hugely rewarding to become involved directly in communities and see the real difference pro bono expertise can make. It also provides new opportunities for professional development and experience of working alongside other professionals.

In 2013-14, LandAid successfully harnessed the resources and expertise of 16 corporate partners to give over £110,000 of property pro bono advice to 15 charity partners.

With over 100 partners, LandAid is perfectly placed to harness the skills of those who want to contribute to organisations needing property advice. We have the expertise and connections to broker the relationship between pro bono giver and receiver to guarantee a successful outcome.

LandAid believe we can do more – we want our supporters to commit to giving at least 10 days of free professional advice to our projects per year. Our aim is to match projects with professionals in their local area, so people feel a real connection and understanding of the pro bono partnership.

To find out how to get involved, contact Elizabeth Pearson, Pro Bono Manager (email [email protected]).20
