Valley

A valley is lowland formed between hills and mountains (usually by rivers) and has a "U" or a "V" shape. A very deep

river valley is called a canyon or gorge.

Mountains

A mountain is a large area of land that rises high above its surroundings. It is a large, steep hill. Mountains can be on land and in the ocean. A group of connected mountains is called a

mountain range.

Deserts

A desert is an area of land that receives little to no rain and is very hot! Deserts cover about one fifth of the Earth's

surface. Deserts are hot and provide little shelter from the hot sun. Some small animals make their home in the desert.

Plateaus

Plateaus are highlands that have a steep separation from land around them. Plateaus are created by strong wind and

rain that lift up/wear down land into mesas, buttes, and canyons.
