Refuse Freighter The attended freighter will visit Langham Community Centre car park on Saturdays 12 April, 7 June and 2 August, from 8.00 to 9.15 am.
PET DOG SHOW & SUMMER FETE
There will be a Companion (Pet) Dog Show (under Kennel Club Rules) and Summer Fete at Boxted Village Hall and King George Playing Field on Saturday 14 June (12 mid-day to 4 pm). The event will be in aid of Church funds. Offers of help with organising and/or supplying the various stalls and with arranging the refreshments will be most gratefully received by Jos Carter (Tel 272755). One aspect that needs early preparation is the plant stall and so gardeners all are asked if this springtime they could kindly set aside whatever they think would make a suitable contribution. The event will require publicity and volunteers to take posters to surrounding villages and to local tourist information offices will be called for in due course.
BOXTED REMEMBERS WORLD WAR ONE
To mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and its effect on the Boxted Community, a special Commemoration Event will be held in St Peter’s Church on Friday 1 August at 7.30 pm. The evening will attempt to capture, through words and music, what life was like in the Great War, for the young men of Boxted who went off to fight and for the Home Front. Further details of the event and the accompanying special edition Commemoration Booklet will be given out in the coming months. Meanwhile, please save the date! For more information, please phone Annette Whybrow on 272773 or email her at [email protected]
ST MARY’S CHURCH BELLS On 27 January 1914 the first full peal on the St Mary’s bells was rung in 2 hours 51 minutes by: Sidney B Denlon Albert I Smith Arthur J M Smith William P Mead Frank C Smith Charles Doe On 3 February this year the 100th anniversary of the event was marked by a peal rung in 2 hours 53 minutes by Yvonne B Towler James L Towler
Christina D A Brewster David E Culham George E Thoday Ian J Culham It is understood that a “peal board”, for hanging in the church, is to be made in celebration of the two events. The numbers, experience and skill of the bell-ringers has varied over the years. A notable change since 1914 is the presence of female ringers, who were rarely seen in a ringing chamber before the Great War. Now of course they are welcome and valued.
ST MARY’S & PETER’S YOUNG PEOPLE’S GROUPS
Sunday Group The Sunday Group, for the youngest children, meets every Sunday during the 10 am service. Each week two parents lead the sessions on a rostered basis, in-troducing the children to the Bible through stories and craft activity. The Zone The Zone is the Churches’ group for 8 to 11 year olds; it meets early on Friday evenings during school term-time in the converted annexe at Patsy Ann Maggs’s Boxted home. Some members also take part in the Sunday Group. Under the lead-ership of Patsy Ann and with help from the visiting Youth Worker, the children play games, sing, study the Bible and do craft ac-tivities, all with themes such as different aspects of the nature of God. The Edge See the front page. Youth Worker For a few years very generous donations enabled St Mary’s and St Peter’s to host a volunteer Christian youth worker, selected and appointed by the “Time for God” (TfG) charity (see http://timeforgod.org), whose patron is the Archbishop of York. The Churches now have an arrange-ment with St Michael’s, Myland, to share an overseas youth worker. The current TfG volun-teer is Scarlett Canaday from North Carolina, USA, who comes weekly to help with The Zone and The Edge and the Sunday eve-ning CONNECT services.
