    LANGUAGE ANALYSIS for lesson planning

    TARGET LANGUAGE: I wish

Aspects of FORM that are important to consider (both written and spoken):

I wish uses a verb in the past tense after it.

The pronunciation of the ending sound /sh/

MEANING: (What does each piece of target language mean?

I wish is used to express that we want a situation in the present (or future) to be different.

List at least 4 comprehension checking questions(yes/no, either/or, example,

short answer, then definition if possible!) for the meaning of this language point:1. Do you use willafter I wish?2. Is I wishused to talk about the past?3. Can you use I wishto talk about hypothetical situations?4. Is I wisha way to say what you would like to do?

USE (When is this appropriate or not appropriate? Compare it to language that has a

similar meaning. When do we choose to use this form? Why?)

It is appropriate to use I wishin formal or informal situations.

Challenge point: What is most challenging (F, M or U) and why?

The most challenging is the fact that Ss misunderstand the use of past tense in the structure. Since theverb is in past tense Ss may think the idea is in the past and not present or future.

List 3-5 potential and/or typical mistakes/challenges that ELLs might make/have

when learning this particular language point.

    1. I wish I have

    2. Ss mispronounce wish \wich\ instead of \wish\

    3. I wish she has

What are you going to do to help learners deal with these challenges?

I will provide several tasks for them to be aware of the correct form.

FLUENT USE: List twopotential real world activities / situations / contextsin which the

learner might use this kind of language:

    1. To talk about things they want to be different.

    2. To talk about their dreams.

Complete a written exercise using the structure I wish+ simple past5. Provide a set of pictures about the environment to talk about how things could be different.

    6. Draw the most serious environmental situation in San Carlos and talk about them.7. Ask 3 wishes to a Genie about how the previous situations could be different.

VISUALS: Drawing/diagram/chart of two different ways to present the form and/or meaning of

the language point on the board or on posters. (Feel free to do this on another sheet of paper

    and attach it here!
