Sample answer

A singer’s life for me!

Who wouldn’t want to have a

lifestyle of the rich and

famous? If I could choose

anyone’s lifestyle, I’d go for

Joe Jonas, the American singer

and actor. Not only does he

get to work with his family,

but he gets to travel all over

the world doing what he

loves.

I think I could get used to a

luxurious life, filled with

expensive things and fantastic

clothes. I wouldn’t wear

second-hand clothes, but I will

have all the latest designer

clothing which I would get out

of my huge wardrobe in my

massive mansion. I would have

to get used to all the

attention from the fans, but I

think I’d be alright with that.

Besides, I’d be too busy

travelling around the globe

making different films and TV

shows. If I ever got bored with

acting, I could just go back to

singing! If I were that famous,

I could do anything I wanted. I

don’t think it will come true,

but it’s nice to dream.

Sample answer

Dear Mrs Reeves,

Thank you very much for your

email regarding the damage

caused to my violin. I was

deeply upset when I

discovered it happened during

my transfer through the

airport. I arrived from Berlin

on Thursday 4th March. My

flight number was HT676. My

transfer flight to London was

scheduled for 4.30 pm. The

flight number was HT922 and

it was leaving from gate

number 23.

Unfortunately, the violin case

is broken and now cannot

close properly. It seems that

the latch has snapped off. Two

of the strings on the violin

have also been broken, as well

as a minor scratch on the

body of the violin. I can send

images if you would prefer. I

understand it will not be very

expensive to repair, but I feel

it is the airport’s duty, as both

the violin and case were in

perfect condition when I left

Berlin.

I look forward to hearing from

you soon.

Kind regards,

Stephanie Young

Part 2 Report

Sample answer

Introduction

The aim of this report is to

summarise the technological

facilities at Hammond College

and give recommendations for

improvements.

Existing facilities

The college is fairly well-

equipped with one dedicated

technology suite available for

students to use. In addition,

there are numerous computers

and a printer in the library

where students may print any

work. The language laboratory

has a class speaker system

using CDs and cassettes so

students can practise listening

skills.

Recommendations

Although the college has

enough computer equipment,

there is no provision for

charging of personal devices,

such as tablets. Many students

use tablets for college work;

therefore charging points

would be very useful.

Purchasing another printer

would also benefit students by

reducing queuing time at the

existing one.

Headsets in the language

laboratory would also allow

students to work

independently without

distraction from classmates.

Additionally, upgrading to

digital software would enable

Page 5: Language focus Reading and Use of Vocabulary Habitual

5

staff to access more practice

materials online.

Conclusion

Facilities at Hammond College

are adequate, but could

benefit from further

investment as specified above,

especially in providing

charging points and

upgrading existing technology.

I recently attended a dance

performance at my local

theatre. I had never been to a

show like it before; it was so

good. The principal dancers

were absolutely incredible.

They demonstrated many

different styles of dance that

I’m sure I saw, and some that I

had never heard of. The main

dancers were assisted by a

large company of other

dancers who were equally as

talented. I think my favourite

part was when they danced to

Irish music. The whole dance

company came out to take

part in the Irish dance, and it

was breathtaking. All the

dancers kept excellent rhythm

and managed to dance exactly

the same as everybody else – I

was so excited that I couldn’t

take my eyes off them. I

would definitely recommend

that anyone who enjoys a

variety of dances go and see

the show. I think it would

appeal to people of all ages

because I can’t imagine

anyone not enjoying it.

Dear Miss Benson,

I saw your advertisement for a

children’s games co-ordinator

on my college noticeboard

and I would like to apply for

the position. I have just

started a sports management

course at college, so I feel that

working at the leisure centre

would be an excellent place to

practise my skills.

I have not had much

experience working with

children, but I am the oldest

of four so I am used to being

around children. However, I

have been organising games

and events for my local

community centre, which helps

all ages. I enjoy speaking to a

wide variety of people and

they seem to like my friendly

nature. I feel that doing this

voluntarily has given me the

necessary patience and

organisational skills required

to work with children. I am

hard-working and punctual to

all events, and I think I would

be an excellent candidate for

the job.

I hope that you will consider

my application and I look

forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Ted Hawkins

Is social networking the best

way to keep in touch with

friends?

Nowadays, many people

prefer to communicate

through various social

networking sites that have

become available. Although

there are advantages to this, it

may not always be the best

method of communication.

To begin with, using online

sites is an extremely

convenient way of staying in

touch with others. The

majority of people carry a

smart phone with them

everywhere they go, and this

enables them to contact

anyone they choose, wherever

they are. At the click of a

button, one can instantly

connect with friends.

Additionally, this convenience

allows one to have a wider

variety of global friends who

they would not normally be in

contact with.

On the other hand,

communication through social

networks cannot replace face-

to-face friendship. Having

friends outside of the internet

means you can experience

many different things with

them in person. This also

means that people do not

spend too much time in front

of a device which may be

harmful to their health.

To sum up, though online

communication has enabled

us to contact more people, it

cannot completely replace

offline friendships.

I live in such a picturesque

village in the south of my

country that I don’t think I’d

want to live anywhere else.

People would think that it

must be dull living in a small

village, but I completely

disagree. For a small place, it’s

quite lively with a café and a

few restaurants. There are also

many outdoor activities which

you can do, and just a few

miles away is an attractive

castle. Going horse-riding

around the castle grounds is

probably one of the best

things to do around here, but

inside the castle is just as

exciting. There’s even a river

next to the castle to go

fishing. Every weekend, there’s

a village market on the green

where you can buy locally

made products, including

crafts and home-made food. I

would definitely recommend

visitors to come to the area

and experience the thrill of

being in the countryside, as

well as tasting our home-

made cakes!

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your email. That’s

great news to hear you’re

coming here for your holiday,

but I can’t believe I won’t be

here to show you around!

Firstly, a week is not enough!

You need to come back later

and then I can take you to

other places. But, on this trip,

you should definitely go and

stay in the northern district.

It’s not too far from the

capital and it’s easy to get

there.

It’s a great area for lakes so

make sure you pack your gear

and then you can enjoy

sailing, which I know you’ll

love. There are some good

golf courses, so your parents

will be happy to spend the

day there while you go off

exploring and having fun. If I

were you, I’d make a trip to

the castle by Western Lake –

take your camera!

There are a few country hotels

around the main lakes, but I’d

suggest getting one up in the

hills because then it’ll give you

a stunning view of the whole

area.

I hope that’s given you some

ideas. Let me know what you

do!

Charities are an important way

of giving help to people who

need it in our society.

Although I agree that

donating money is important,

I think there are other ways of

helping too.

Firstly, if people want to help

charities, they can do some

activities to raise money. They

can do this by being

sponsored to do some

exercise or another activity

they think will attract

donations. This can involve

more people in the

community than just donating

money. However, people can

also give their time to

volunteer for a charity. This

can be done by working in a

charity shop or by helping to

organise events. Additionally,

if people do not have the time

to raise money or volunteer,

they can easily help to raise

awareness by being active on

social media. If someone posts

or shares information about

what a charity is doing, it

helps to spread the charity’s

work to a wider audience.

In conclusion, any method of

helping a charity is the best

way because charities are

interested in helping others

who are less fortunate.

A Growing Problem

Did you know that levels of

crime are increasing in almost

all areas around the country?

It’s a shocking problem, isn’t

it? The town where I live is no

different.

Importantly, the crime around

here isn’t what I would call

‘high-level’ crime. True, there

are a few burglaries, but

nothing more dangerous than

that. The biggest problem we

face is mainly shoplifting, and

this is evident in most kinds of

shops in the town. Personally,

I think it comes from a lack of

activities to do here, so many

people are bored of having

nothing to do.

There’s not a lot the police

can do, really, but I think it

would be helpful if we could

see more police officers on

the streets. This may help to

stop people even thinking

about breaking the law.

However, just think how low

the crime rates could be if

there were facilities that kept

people entertained. This, in my

opinion, is probably the best

way to tackle the increase in

crime. Make people busy,

create activities to do and

reduce the crime levels.

Part 2 Report

Sample answer

Introduction

The aim of this report is to

assess and give suggestions

about saving energy at the

Lane Street School of English.

Problems

The school currently uses a

large amount of energy, and

most of this is wasted. The

biggest issue is that lights in

classrooms are left on, both

by students and staff. A

second problem is the old

heating system, which is

manual and consumes a lot of

energy. Finally, there is a lot of

waste paper and other

materials that could be

recycled.

Solutions

The school urgently needs to

upgrade its heating system. I

recommend using one where

timings can be input which

would mean a more efficient

use of energy. It is advisable

that a memo is sent to all

students and staff on the

importance of switching off

lights when leaving rooms.

This also applies to electronic

whiteboards. The school

should invest in recycling bins

to be placed next to rubbish

bins to encourage more

recycling. It is also suggested

to switch to a paperless school

system.

Conclusion

These are some simple ways

to help ensure a lower

consumption of energy for

Lane Street School.

Part 2 Informal letter

Sample answer

Hi Max,

Thanks for your letter. It

sounds as though you’re

making some important

decisions about how you live

your life.

Yes, I’ve been a vegetarian for

many years now, and I’m very

happy with my choice. The

most important reason for me

was that I was worried about

animal rights. In my opinion, I

didn’t want to eat any kind of

meat because I think that

animals should not be harmed

in that way.

Saying that, though, being a

vegetarian isn’t for everyone,

and that’s OK. It’s all about

what you personally believe,

so it’s really up to you. I’d

suggest having a look at

animal rights’ websites, or

even vegetarian websites and

see what you think. If you still

want to try it, but don’t know

how, how about cutting down

on some of the meat you eat

now? There are also really

tasty alternatives you can try.

I hope that helps a bit. Let me

know how you get on.

Take care,

John
