Yennsy Diaz was named the Midwest League’s April Player of the Month after making five starts and allowing only one earned run in 28 2/3 innings, posting an ERA of 0.31, a WHIP of 0.58 and a batting average against of .063 (six hits allowed in 95 at-bats). Diaz finished the month with 15 consecutive scoreless innings.

Kevin Smith has been named the Midwest League’s Player of the Week twice, first for the week of April 23-29, batting .433 and driving in 13 runs in the eight-game stretch, and second for the week of May 7-13, batting .500 (12-for-24) with five doubles and one triple in five games. Smith leads the MWL with 60 hits, 21 doubles, 31 extra-base hits, 108 total bases, 41 runs batted in and a .667 slugging percentage, while ranking second with a .370 batting average. Smith has reached base in 40 of 41 games this season and has hit safely in 29 of his last 31 games.

The Lugnuts currently sit in first place atop the Midwest League’s Eastern Division with 45 games down and 25 games left in the first half. If the Nuts finish the half in one of the top two spots in the division, they clinch a playoff berth.

Top Nuts starter Yennsy Diaz was promoted to A-Advanced Dunedin yesterday, replaced by right-hander Claudio Custodio from Extended Spring Training. Diaz was leading the Lugnuts in starts, quality starts, innings, walks, strikeouts and opponent batting average.
