JAM+for flute, trumpet, violin and voice

    Performance Instructions

There is no score for JAM+ - it consists of only parts for the players. There are two distinct sections: the vertical page (section I) and the horizontalpage (section II). The piece requires a conductor/leader who leads the structure of the piece and cues the players.

    SECTION I

For this section, all the performers have a page with identical layout (ten framed fragments, stacked vertically). The score is read from top to bottom, and the fragments must be performed in a linear fashion (the performers are not allowed to jump ahead or play fragments randomly). The playersmust be facing away from each other and not be able to see each other. The goal is to count down the fragments, from the topmost to thebottommost. Each fragment can only be performed once. If two players start playing a fragment at the same time, the section starts from the

beginning. The section ends when al l the fragments have been played through successfully.

    SECTION II

For this section, the players turn to face the conductor.

The material on the page is split in two: the fragmented material (top half of the page) and the coda material (bottom half of the page). Thefragmented material is sorted according to number of semiquavers (one to eight). The conductor/leader has cards with these numbers on them. Theconductor displays a number of these cards to the players (e.g. the cards with numbers 3, 5 and 8 are displayed) and this indicates the length of thetotal loop. (So in this case, the loop consists of a fragment of 3 semiquavers, a fragment of 5 semiquavers and a fragment of 8 semiquavers). Theloop is repeated, and players may choose to perform any number of these fragments within the loop. (In our example, a violinist may choose to play a3 and 5 fragment, but rest during the 8, whereas a trumpet player may only choose to play on the 5 fragment, and the flautist may play the 8 andthe 3 fragments). If they have more than one fragments of a given length, they may choose to perform any available fragments. Players are notallowed to combine or split fragments (e.g. if the card 5 is shown, they are not allowed to play a 2 and a 3, or a 1 and a 4, and vice-versa).

When the conductor/leader indicates the coda cue (touching the head), the players must move into the coda section, which is performed as normal(one line after the other).
