Using an air-erase pen, draw a 61/2" x 6 1/2" square on the fabricmeant for the embroideredblocks.

This size includes the 6" x 6"block size, plus a 1/4" seamallowance on all four sides.

Then, mark the fabric for theother embroidered blocks. Linethem up and draw them side byside to make cutting them easierlater on. There are 12 in total.

A template, or printout of adesign, is an excellent tool tohelp with placement.

Print a template of the designfrom your embroidery software. Ifyou do not have embroiderysoftware, Wilcom TrueSizer is afree program to use.

Center the template inside thedrawn square, and mark thecenter point and vertical andhorizontal axis lines.

Spray a piece of sheer meshcutaway stabilizer and smooth iton the back of the fabric.

Hoop the fabric and stabilizertogether, aligning the marks onthe hoop with the marks on thefabric.

Use clips to hold the excessfabric if necessary to keep it fromsliding under the hoop whileembroidering.

Attach the hoop to the machineand load the design.

Move the hoop so that the needleis directly aligned with the centerpoint on the fabric.

Embroider the design.

When the first design hasfinished embroidering, repeat andembroider the other elevenblocks needed to make the quilt.

Now that all the embroidery isfinished, lay the fabric on acutting pad, and cut out theblocks using a quilting ruler androtary cutter.

Then mark and cut out thirteen 61/2" x 6 1/2" fabric accent blocks.

In this tutorial, we are using twodifferent fabrics, so cut seven ofthe first color, and six of thesecond.

First we will assemble the quiltrow by row.

Start with the block on the far topleft, making sure it is made of thepatterned fabric that you cutseven blocks out of (not thefabric that you cut only six).

Align it on top of the block thatgoes next to it with the right sidestogether, and pin in place alongthe left side.

Sew a 1/4" seam along thepinned edge only.

In this tutorial, we used a walkingfoot attachment on the sewingmachine. This type of foot movesthe fabric along the top in syncwith the feed dogs of themachine, keeping the layersaligned together.

Next press the back seam with ahot dry iron.

Make sure not to use steamwhen pressing a quilt project as itwill distort the fabric.

Repeat the previous steps to addall of the blocks in the top row, making sure to press each seamin the same direction.

Then repeat to make the otherfour rows of the quilt.

Once all the rows are finished, align the first and second row ontop of each other with the rightsides together. Pin along the topedge.

Sew a 1/4" seam along thepinned edge only, and press theseam.

Repeat to add the other fourrows, making sure to press theseams in the same direction.

To make the top and bottomborders, first measure the topedge of the quilt top. Our quiltmeasured 30 3/8" long.

In this tutorial, the finishedborders are going to be 3" wide, and the width needs a seamallowance of 1 1/4".

Mark and draw the top andbottom borders to 30 3/8" long x4 1/4" wide.

Align the borders along the topand bottom of the quilt top withthe right sides together, and pinin place.

Sew a 1/4" seam along thepinned edges and press theseams.

For the side borders, measurethe sides of the quilt top includingthe added top and bottomborders. Ours measures 37 1/2".

Mark and cut two sides bordersthat are 37 1/2" tall x 4 1/4" wide. Then align them with the sideedges, pin them in place, andsew a 1/4" seam along thepinned edges.

Press the seams.

Next, cut the backing and battingso that they are slightly biggerthan the quilt top.

Then, layer the quilt top, batting, and quilt backing fabric together. To do this, lay the quilt backingdown with the wrong side up, laythe batting on top of that, andfinally add the quilt top with theright side facing up.

Line up the edges and pin thelayers together. Use curvedsafety pins for best results

Quilt through all the layers, starting in the center and workingyour way out towards the edges.

In this tutorial, we used nylonmonofilament thread in theneedle and sewing thread in thebobbin, making sure the bobbinthread matched the color of thebacking fabric.

Drop the feed dogs, and sewalong the existing seams using afree motion foot.

Sew right along the outer edgesof the quilt top, and then trimaway the excess batting andbacking fabric..

Lay the quilt flat with the quilt topfacing up.

Unfold the bias tape and lay it flatwith the wrong side facing up.Then align the edge of the tapewith the outer edge of the quilt, and pin in place.

Make sure to start the bias tapein the middle of one side of thequilt and not at a corner.

Fold over the starting edge of thebias tape, and begin to sew thebias tape down, making sure tostitch right on the fold closest tothe edge.

This quilt features a 3/4" seamalong the edge -- make sure tostop sewing the bias tape 3/4"away from the edge to make amitered corner.

Once you have sewn right beforeeach corner, bring the tape up toform an angled fold.

Then, fold the tape down andcontinue to pin and sew along theremaining sides.

Make sure to repeat the abovesteps at every corner.

When you reach where youstarted the bias tape, stop, andtrim the end of the bias tape sothat it overlaps the starting edgeby a few inches. Sew theoverlapping bias tape piece alongthe fold.

Next, fold the tape around theraw edges of the quilt to theback.

Pin and hand sew the bias tapein place. If preferred, you canalso machine sew the bias tapein place to finish.

Use the in-the-hoop crazy quiltblocks to create unique looksusing your scrap fabric stash!Assemble the blocks asinstructed above. The fabricpieces will extend almost all theway to the outer edges of theblocks. A cutting line will sew lastaround the block -- use this lineto cut out the blocks.

Have fun arranging the in-the-hoop crazy quilt blocks for uniqueeffects and patterns. As you planyour quilt, mix and matchdifferent fabrics, prints, andtextured fabrics. As youassemble the rows, simply rotatethe blocks to give a different lookeach time!
