In 2010’s crop of new models, you’ll increasingly find built-in web cameras at lower price points and lighter weight builds that use aluminum casing and, in some instances, high-tech carbon fiber to make the computers easier to lug around.

Laptop makers wage a perpetual war to boost processing power while not burning down the battery. As you load your laptop with faster and more robust processors, they run hot and run down your power supply. Fortunately, new graphic engines can more efficiently handle visual processing and not only improve performance (i.e. how fast it takes you to do things) but keep the battery humming along for longer.

Keep in Mind: Before you buy your new laptop, keep a few things in mind:

Screen Size: Pay attention to the type of and quality of the display - “HD” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s sporting a 1920 x 1080 resolution screen (in fact, most laptops don’t have or need it). Also, matte screens are easier to view in brighter light, while those with higher contrast ratios and brightness will provide a more pleasing visual experience.

Processing Power: The brains and brawn of any laptop (or computer, for that matter) is the computer processing unit, or CPU. So how fast of a CPU do you need?

That depends, of course, on what you want to do. Basic word processing, Web surfing, email checking and social networking isn’t terribly taxing on your system, so processors offering 1GHz or more of CPU performance should suffice. If you’re into watching movies, playing video games or doing any photo or video editing, you’ll need considerably more processing punch.

Memory: Depending on the version of Windows your laptop runs, you may only need 4GB of RAM (32-bit versions of Windows 7 can only support 4GB). If you have a higher performance laptop with a 64-bit version of Windows, you can step up to higher memory capacities (you’re also future proofed to handle new 64-bit software programs).

Hard drive storage is another matter. It’s relatively cheap (and getting cheaper) so bulking up isn’t a bad idea. Besides, if you buy a generously sized hard drive, it makes a good back-up for files (like digital images or videos) that you’re also saving on a desktop hard drive. Newer Solid State Drives (SSDs) use the same flash memory found in digital camera memory cards in place of a hard drive. They’re lighter weight, drain less battery power and load faster than a hard drive but they’re also more expensive and can’t offer the large storage capacities found on hard drives.

These ultra-thin models are easy to carry with you, making them ideal for students and road-warriors. To boost their mobility, many come with 3G connectivity for wireless Internet access on the road. They’re also quite inexpensive relative to full-sized notebooks, often costing below $400 and offload a lot of the software to the proverbial ‘cloud’ where applications are hosted remotely.

To cram a notebook down to netbook size (and cost) requires some tradeoffs. The first is screen size. You’ll typically find screen sizes in the 8-11-inch frame in a netbook. That’s far smaller than what you’ll get on your average notebook, where screens come in at the 13-17 inch range. Processing power is also feebler. Netbooks tend to employ Intel’s entry-level Atom processor (or AMD’s Athlon Neo), while traditional notebooks use multiple core processors for enhanced performance. It’s fine for basic tasks such as email and Web surfing, but it’s not up for video editing or HD video watching.

Hard drive capacity is also pretty spare, usually in the 160GB range (though you can bulk up if you want). Don’t bother looking for an optical drive, there isn’t one, nor are there as many USB ports and outputs that you’d find on full size notebooks. Keyboards on netbooks used to be cramped, and some still are, but an increasing number of manufacturers are touting “full size” keyboards or ones that are just south of what you’d find on a typical notebook (if you plan on hammering out the Great American Novel, be sure to consult the specs on keyboard size closely).

So, if you’re just interested in web surfing, email taking notes and some light school work, netbooks are a good choice. If you’re a gamer or plan on doing any intense photo or video editing, you should opt for a full-sized notebook.

In fact, tablet computers have been around for years now but, like they did with iPod and digital music players, it took Apple’s iconic style, user interface and marketing savvy to propel the product into the mainstream.

Before the iPad, tablets were essentially business-oriented notebooks with swivel displays (some hav touch-screens as well). You’d see them at a doctor’s office or for field workers who needed to input data on the go. This style of tablet endures and is still pointed squarely at business professionals. These high-end tablets are typically rugged - built for field use, while simultaneously offering light weight builds that make them easy to tote around.

Consumer Friendly: The iPad has popularized a new, consumer-friendly tablet concept that loses the keyboard in favor a single, touch-screen computing device. This style of product is also referred to as a “slate” because it doesn’t have a tactile keyboard built-in. Tablet’s have been around for awhile but issues including price, form factor and reliability plagued its ascent. That said, the market conditions are now improving and makes these new form factors worthy of consideration.

What You Need to Know: Consumer tablets are not really laptop or netbook replacements. They’re primarily for media consumption, not media creation. It’s the product you want if you’re interested in reading a blog, not writing one. They are not, to borrow the industry jargon, “productivity devices.” So couch potatoes, rejoice.

Buying Guide

In addition to the cost of the printer, there is the cost of the replacement ink (refills) that you will need to consider

First, there are three main printer categories; Laser Printers; Inkjet Printers and All-in-One Printers.

Laser Printers come in all different sizes and are extremely popular for all types of customers. They can differ however in color (black & white), the quality of output and printing speed. Lasers have taken over as the most popular printer type because prices have come down much over the years. LED Printers, which we consider a subset of laser printers, apply dry ink to your print medium through heat. The difference is that an LED printer uses a Light-Emitting Diode array (hence the name LED) instead of using precision lasers to affix the toner to the imaging drum or belt. Traditional lasers have a bit better quality output.

InkJet Printers come in many shapes and sizes and are also very popular due to the low purchase price. Keep in mind that there are two types of print heads on InkJet printers – the fixed head and disposable print head. Fixed heads last longer but if there’s a problem it can prove costly. Disposable heads should be replaced when you replace the ink, which can add to your total cost of printer ownerships.

All-in-One Printers are offered by most major vendors and most include three basic devices: printer, scanner and copier. Often, products also include fax, photo or email functionality. Web functionality is also becoming a standard feature. Price and convenience are the obvious benefits of this category, and they can also require less energy usage and less space – a nice feature for the small business and student market.
