HUMM RULES – p. 1

1. Special Rules for Map Class:• You may carry a GPS for emergency use only, but it will be sealed in a plastic bag. If the bag is opened for

non-emergency purposes before returning to HUMM base, your team is disqualified.

• You may carry a smartphone, but are NOT allowed to use the GPS function.

2. Special Rules for GPS Class:No laptops.

3. Scoring & VerificationAlways take a photo that matches the photo in the HUMM Points Book as closely as possible. If there’s a scoring dispute, provide a digital photo of all team members at that checkpoint as verification. Points are denied for poorly matching photos.

4. PenaltiesHorizons Unlimited uses the following as a guideline to assess penalties. These are not the only possible reasons to assess penalties in a Horizons Unlimited sponsored event.

• 1,000 points: Maximum speed limit on all main pit access roads and in all pit areas will be maximum 25 kph (15 mph) or less if locally posted limit is less for all vehicles, or exceed posted speed limits on public roads and highways;

• 10 points per minute: Late return within 1 hour of the official closing of the day’s riding;

• 20 points per minute: Late return between 1-2 hours after the official closing of the day’s riding (after 2 hours, team loses eligibility for event ranking);

Page 18: Larch Lookout - Horizons Unlimited › events › canwest-2019 › ... · 2019-07-03 · Larch Lookout 58 50.1235, -117.7891 NORTHWEST These kinds of vistas never get old. ... so

HUMM RULES – p.2• A complaint filed for improper riding or conduct must be filed in writing with the Event Organizers within

30 minutes after the official team check-in time. Penalty amount is at the discretion of the event organizers.

• 250 points: Failure of the team to get all team vehicles through the last 100 metres of the course under the team’s own power. A non-functioning bike may be moved to the Check-In area by any outside help, but must be pushed, towed, carried, or dragged the final 100 m by team mates only. Event officials may assist the rider if necessary for safety of participants.

5. DisqualificationsEvent monitors roam the riding area throughout the day, watchful for actions that result in disqualifications.

• No refunds are given if a team or team member is disqualified;

• For Map Class: Using your smart phone as a GPS and/or unsealing your GPS while out riding, except for an emergency;

• Horizons Unlimited refers to the following list as a guideline to assess disqualifications. These items are not the only possible reasons for disqualification in a Horizons Unlimited sponsored event:

a) Failure of your team to return after 2 hours after the official close of the day’s riding (disqualified from eligibility for event ranking);

b) Abusive conduct toward an event official, the public, or other participants;c) False statements or signatures on any Horizons Unlimited registration form or document; d) Anything that might harm or injure the environment or wildlife, whether reported by an event

official, the public, or other participants. Reports made could prevent future HUMMs at this location. Examples include, but are not limited to:• Riding off of clearly established trails and roads (no cross-country riding or bushwhacking);

Page 19: Larch Lookout - Horizons Unlimited › events › canwest-2019 › ... · 2019-07-03 · Larch Lookout 58 50.1235, -117.7891 NORTHWEST These kinds of vistas never get old. ... so

HUMM RULES – p.3• Accessing sensitive and prohibited areas as stated in the mandatory team briefing;• Smoking while out riding (enforced during high fire risk times);• Stream crossings, unless the trail clearly continues on the other side or if there is a bridge.

e) Anything that might put event officials, the public, other participants, or yourself at risk. Examples include, but are not limited to:• Consuming alcohol while out riding;• Smoking on the trails;• Using illegal drugs;• Speeding 10+ mph in a restricted speed area over the announced or posted speed limit; • Reckless driving in pit areas or any access roads by event vehicle or your event support vehicles

that are not officially affiliated with Horizons Unlimited or the HUMM event;

f) Unfair play. Examples include, but are not limited to:• Team members not riding together (only exception: a team member rides solo to secure medical

assistance and/or bike recovery support).• Sharing checkpoint info with other teams;• Removing or tampering with tagpoints.

6. TagPointsWe hide the tags such that casual passers-by do not see and remove them, but it is possible some may disappear before the event. If a team reports a missing TAG:

a) We will not announce this info. Each team must find this out independently without advance notice;

b) The team(s) must show us a photograph that matches very closely the photograph in the HUMM Points Book;

Page 20: Larch Lookout - Horizons Unlimited › events › canwest-2019 › ... · 2019-07-03 · Larch Lookout 58 50.1235, -117.7891 NORTHWEST These kinds of vistas never get old. ... so

HUMM RULES – p.4c) If a tag is determined to be missing, then full points will be awarded to teams that present a good

clear photo matching the photo in the HUMM Points Book;d) BUT if another team later confirms the “missing” tag’s code, in other words it DOES EXIST, then 50% of

that tag’s points will be deducted from previous teams that showed only a photograph - they didn’t look hard enough.

7. Rider/Driver Responsibility• Riders/Drivers are responsible for everyone associated with them (e.g., family members, crew

members, children, pets, etc.);

• All riders must sign all entry forms and releases in person during the registration period to be eligible for points during that event. Identification may be requested;

• All competitors must be in appropriate physical condition, free from major medical problems that would impair their ability to participate safely, and be able to push/roll their vehicle to a location accessible for support and recovery teams. No entrant, pit crew member or sponsor shall have any claim for damages, injury, expenses, lawsuits or otherwise against Horizons Unlimited, Event Partners, or event-affiliated support and volunteers.

• Operation of off-road vehicles (excerpted from the BC Off Road Vehicles Act):

SECTION 17(1) A person must not use or operate an off-road vehicle on Crown land or prescribed private land:

(a) in a careless, reckless or negligent manner that may endanger or cause injury to persons or damage to property, or

(a) on the tracks of an operating railway, or(b) on private land without the consent of the owner, lessee or occupant of the private land.
