A Summer Journey with us at the Park

We offer one Adult Sunday School class this summer at 8:45am in Bryans Room. We use FaithLink’s ready-to-use lessons as well as guest presenters. August 23: FaithLink topic is on the Iran Nuclear Agreement. The U.S. and several other nations have negotiated with Iran an historic and controversial agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear program. What are the terms? What is the affect on world security/peace? How does our faith shape our attitudes on this agreement? August 30: FaithLink topic is Cuba. (Unfortunately Lynn Hutchinson, our presenter, had to cancel.) After over 50 years of discord, the United States and Cuba have restored diplomatic relations. What is the history of the relationship between Cuba and the United States? What are the terms associated with the renewed efforts at diplomacy? How does Christian faith inform our efforts for peace and cooperation?

On Sundays at 10am during the summer, quality care for newborns to three years is provided by Barbara P-Walker and a volunteer. Located in the Main Level of the Christian Ed Wing.

Nursery volunteers: August 23, Jane Rogers

Please follow this link to sign-up to be a nursery volunteer September 13-December 27. We thank

our volunteers! http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090548abad292-university Children ages 3.5 through 3rd grade are invited to Children’s Church, which is provided by Christina Pacheco and Hannah Westra. Children gather in the lower level East Fellowship Hall, which is beneath the Sanctuary. Children will leave the Sanctuary for Children’s Church following the Children’s Message at the 10am service.

Mark your calendars for Kick-Off Sunday on September 13 when we return to our regular programming. Lunch will be served in the Courtyard and there will be an attraction for the children! 8:30am Informal Worship in Wasser Chapel 9:30am Sunday School Hour, children through adult 10:30am Peniel Worship in Wasser Chapel 11:00am Traditional Worship in Sanctuary

We are resuming the collection of coupon selections found in the Denver Post. For many years the people at Evanston United Methodist did just as we did at UPark UMC – they collected coupons. Please bring your coupons to church and place them in the box found near the welcome desk in the lobby. We have people who will deliver them to Brentwood United Methodist Church every

Sunday. They will give the proceeds to Community Ministry, an Emergency Service Agency. ~ Janet Nelson

Today’s flowers are provided by Carol Bedin in honor of Frank & JoAnn Madren’s 55th anniversary and Linda & Tony Bedin’s 49th anniversary.

WORLD CAFÉ NEEDS VOLUNTEERS: World Café is an informal group of Christians from several churches who prepare a meal for international students from DU (and elsewhere) every Thursday during the academic year. We offer friendship and hospitality to students who may be half a world away from their homes. We also provide support to The Foundation Ministry at DU, as we receive day-old bread and pastries from the Panera on

Colorado Boulevard and share excess with the hungry in Civic Center Park. If you have a heart for student ministry or international ministry, or if you would be able to fix a simple meal for 40-50 people every other month, please let us know. World Café embodies UPark's four core values: intergenerational, international, interfaith, and inclusive. Please consider volunteering -- or at least checking out the program some Thursday at noon starting in September. We need additional volunteers to cook to keep the burden as light as possible for our current remaining volunteers. Should you feel called to serve, please contact George Gramer, 303-945-1728, [email protected] .

Meet the Middle East - Adult Forum Series Iman M. Jodeh Presents: Islam: An American’s Guide to Better Understanding This series will take place September 13, 20, 27 at, 9:30 am & October 4 at 12:00-2:00 pm here at University Park United Methodist Church. Iman is the Director of a locally based non-profit called Meet the Middle East, which aims to foster relationships between the US and the Middle East through education and immersion travel. The series will cover the basics of Islam, what the Quran really says, historical Islam verses Islam today, and will end with a field trip to Colorado Muslim Society. This series is sponsored by the UPark Discernment Group.

Please see Duane Buys if you would like to purchase discounted Water World

tickets. He has three left for $30 each. [email protected]

On August 25, 10-11:30am, Chuck Jansch has arranged for a tour of Metro Caring at 1100 East 18th Avenue, Denver. Meet at UPark by 9:30am and then take the church van. If you have questions, please be in touch with Chuck Jansch: 303-758-0410.

KIDS CANS FOR KIDS – BRING THOSE ALUMINUM CANS! Our latest can redemption for 2015 resulted in 86 pounds worth $49.67 for aluminum cans and other miscellaneous metals; for a total of $312.07 thus far this year. We will continue to send these funds to the Children’s Hospital Chaplaincy Department to supply Bibles for patients and their

families including Spanish Bibles and to supply other reading materials for their mobile interfaith book cart. NOTE: Contributors please separate different types of metals as Atlas Metal & Iron Corp—the recycle establishment we use—requires that the different types are separated, weighed and valued individually.

Loaves and Fishes Coalition of Habitat for Humanity consists of volunteers and donors from 12 churches including University Park United Methodist Church. In 2015 Loaves and Fishes is building a home at 2323 W Harvard Ave in Englewood. On August 29, we are staffed with volunteers from UPark UMC. To sign up for any other day, please visit this website: http://loavesandfishes-denver.denver.volunteerhub.com/events/index. The build began on

August 20 and positions are still open. For any questions, please contact Barb Philipp: [email protected].
