Stavros StavrouPresident of Larnaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry

From the EditorWe are delighted to welcome you to Larnaka, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities! As such, Larnaka is abundant in historic and archaeological places, museums and ancient places of faith. But behind the well-known attractions, Larnaka’s narrow streets are filled with hidden gems. This booklet, which is issued for the twentieth consecutive year, aims to assist you in discovering Larnaka “behind the scenes”. Recommendations on new points of interest, events which will entertain you and get you acquainted with the Cypriot culture and of course, valuable tips from the locals.

Every piece of Larnaka offers something special and we want to show it to our esteemed visitors. What I personally love about Larnaka is the fact that it has the atmosphere of a small city and the convenience of a metropolitan area. Larnaka has qualities that distinguish the region from other holiday resorts. You can rarely find a place which combines historic attractions, the commercial centre, cosmopolitan promenades and blue-flag awarded beaches together with numerous activities, all within a short distance. So, Larnaka’s compact size is what makes the destination special, together with other characteristics which can be revealed by reading this edition.

The Larnaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry wishes you a memorable holiday! Make sure that when you depart, your suitcase is filled with memories, nice feelings, new tastes, the stories of the locals and most of all, spiritual rejuvenation.

The beautiful area of mountainous Larnaka as a whole has been declared a European Destination of Excellence on the island; with a particular emphasis on 18 of its unique, traditional communities that are part of the EU programme ‘Eden 2017 - Cultural Tourism’.

Offering a change of pace and character away from the coastline, Larnaka’s rural areas are a popular destination all-year-round. This part of the region is distinguished by authentic architecture, rich history, and retained local pastimes, with each community famous for its own sights, crafts and traditions.

Your experience can range from seeing Neolithic settlements and other archaeological findings, to savouring wine tasting and local delicacies, or watching crafts such as lace or pottery being made in the heart of their original homes.

The 18 villages highlighted in the European Destination of Excellence label are: Agioi Vavatsinias, Agios Theodoros, Choirokoitia, Delikipos, Kalavasos, Kato Drys, Kato Lefkara, Kofinou, Kornos, Layia, Melini, Odou, Ora, Pano Lefkara, Skarinou, Tochni, Vavatsinia, and Vavla.

Highly recommended

• Choirokoitia Neolithic Settlement (one of the world’s most ancient sites).

• Golden Donkeys Farm, Skarinou.

• Lefkara Lace-Making (included in UNESCO List of Intangible Heritage) and Lefkara Silversmithing.

Zenobia is included in the world’s 5 top wreck dive sites and is Cyprus’ most important artificial reef. Since this huge vessel sank in 1980, it has seen around 1.5 million dives. Zenobia is the largest shipwreck in the Mediterranean at 174 metres long, 28 metres wide and 21 metres high. Its hold contained 108 lorries full of cargo such as cars, military equipment, telecommunication systems, air conditioning systems, toys and food. It was also carrying a million eggs, many of which are still intact on the seabed!

A new theory is now being explored in a documentary by Fabien and Celine Cousteau, grandchildren of the famous naval officer and explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau. The two naval explorers dived in Larnaka to research a theory supporting that the Zenobia was purposely shipwrecked by Israeli and British secret services. The documentary ‘Zenobia shipwreck, Mystery of the Spy Sabotage’ premiered on Science Channel recently. Military equipment indicating that the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organisation) was a possible receiver was found in the shipwreck. According to the documentary, the theory is reinforced by the fact that the vessel had started its voyage from Yugoslavia with Syria as its final destination, while PLO members were being trained at the time in Yugoslavia.

“Someone wanted to shipwreck Zenobia” said Fabien in the documentary while his sister Celine stated that “the mystery around Zenobia is still alive.” “Based on a few different indications the theory could be real,” said Director of Zenobia AAK Larnaca-Napa Sea Cruises Andreas Panayiotou.

As next June will be 40 years since the Zenobia sank, events will be taking place to mark the anniversary.

WAS THE ZENOBIA DELIBERATELY SUNK?

Located 40 km from Larnaka, in-between Larnaka, Lefkosia and Lemesos, Zygi is famous on the island for its fishing shelter and fresh fish restaurants, and is built on the beach at an altitude of 8 metres. The village took its name from the Greek word for weigh (zygizo), as locust-bean exporters brought the beans to Zygi to be weighed and delivered to the storehouses.

Zygi’s main attraction is its fishing shelter, which is surrounded by good quality fish taverns, many of which also have children’s facilities and attract diners from all over the island. The picturesque fishing shelter is popular for a stroll after a meal, whilst visitors can also take a traditional fishing trip where the fishermen tell tales of the sea as they demonstrate the old fishing methods.

Every year on September 17, a festival is held in honour of Agios (Saint) Eracledios, whose quaint church is located on the edge of the community. The church is believed to have originally been built around 1800 by immigrants from Asia Minor who settled in the area, as confirmed by graves found in the nearby cemetery.
