\bterinorions Are Top Blood DonorsDec 19, 1980
Dear Sir:In the calendar year 1980, our community
average of eligible blood donors actually donatingblood was about LVo.
However, 2 groups of veterinarians and staffhadl00%o participition, 5 times, giving them D-500status. This is the best participation that can beachieved in this blood region, since only 5 donationsper year are allowed. To the best of our knowledge,ittiris not only a first ever for the county, but also forthe region, the state of New York, and the UnitedStates.
We would appreciate it very much if you wou!{recognize these 2 groups ofveterinarians and staff,perhlps by a letier' If you give certificates foroutstahding community service, that would beappropriate.- -Th;
2 groups are: Homer Animal Clinic (which
was the firit), William P. Cadwallader, Jr, DVM, 66 SWest St, Homer, NY 13077, and Cortland AnimalHospital (following within minutes!), Edward F.Steinfeldt, DVM, West Rd and Madison, Cortland,NY 13045.

Theropy of Demodicosis in Snow Leopord ChollengedJan 15, 1981
Dear Sir:This is in regard to the clinical report (JAVMA'
Nov 1, pp 89L898) by Kenneth C. Fletcher entitled"Demodicosis in a Group of Juvenile Snow Leop-ards." While we are pleased that the cubs are nolonger affiicted, we do have some questions regard-ing the therapy employed'
First, the choice of amoxicillin as an antibiotic inthe treatment, of Staphylococeus aureu's pyodoermasmay have certain drawbacks. Extrapolating frgmcanine data, there is at least an 80Vo chance thisbacteria is a penicillinase producer'; amoxicillin isnot penicillinase-resistant and thus is likely to beineffective. A more appropriate antibiotic wouldhave been oxacillin or one of the macrolides. Morethan likely the povidone scrubs and solutions werethe effective antimicrobial agents in the cub sotreated.
Second, while lime sulfur is a safe topicalmedication for cats,3 it has been shown to be in'effective in canine demodicosis.' The acaracidalsolution does not penetrate the hair follicle wherethe mites reside. Although the mites are transmit-ted from the dam to her neonatal offspring,' the
