PHONIQ® System IntroductionIntroduction

A Laryngectomy is surgery to remove the voice box or larynx usually to treat cancer. The larynx (voice box) plays an important role in helping us breathe and speak and protects the airway and lungs when swallowing. The diagrams show a side view of a person’s anatomy before and after surgery.

Air to and from lungs

The voice box / larynx (shaded orange in the diagram) is removed and the windpipe / trachea (shaded pink) is brought forward to create an opening on the lower neck called a stoma. Air now travels to and from the lungs directly through the new stoma. The food pipe / oesophagus is surgically repaired so that it is now separate from the trachea.

For additional safety and confidence our new soft flexible low profile PHONIQ® DigiClose™ Shower Shield allows for finger occlusion and voicing while showering.

A new generation of intelligent laryngectomy products from Kapitex

Considerations after a Laryngectomy:Prior to undergoing a Laryngectomy a person breathes through the mouth and nose. Air is automatically warmed, filtered and moistened in the nasal cavity prior to reaching the lungs.

After a laryngectomy the mouth and nose are completely separated from the lungs and consequently inhaled air is no longer naturally warmed, filtered or moistened. It is important that the stoma and lungs are protected with a filter system whether the person is active, socialising, showering, resting or sleeping.

Stoma OcclusionTesting has shown PHONIQ® DigiClose™ requires less pressure to occlude the stoma when compared with competitor HME's.

Aesthetically DiscretePHONIQ® DigiClose™ HMEs are lightweight, low profile and available in two colours beige and clear.

Enhanced Visibility of FilterDue to the clear material of the filter housing there is improved visibility of the foam filter, to allow for more timely changes if secretions are present.

PHONIQ® DigiClose™ HME Filters feature a patented unique pressure release mechanism which activates during reflexive coughing or sneezing. This feature helps prevent the HME from being ejected from the baseplate.

1] In its normal operating position the DigiClose™ cap of the HME is flush with its clear housing.

2] During coughing or sneezing the DigiClose™ cap moves quickly forward to allow extra airflow through the filter.

3] The DigiClose™ cap is pressed gently back into place to resume normal functionality.

PHONIQ® DigiClose™ HME filters can be used with PHONIQ® baseplates, laryngectomy tubes and stoma buttons.

SpiroTect™ Laryngectomy TubesThe SpiroTect™ Laryngectomy Tube ensures the tracheostoma is kept open and can be used with other medical products, for example, to facilitate with pulmonary restoration and speech. The SpiroTect™ Laryngectomy Tube is inserted via the stoma into the trachea and secured around the neck . Available in Fenestrated and Non Fenestrated.

Please note SpiroTectTM tube sizes are measured via the outer diameter compared to alternative brands who measure their tube via the inner diameter. SpiroTect™ 44mm tube is the same as alternative brand’s 36mm, and 62mm is the same size as alternative brand’s 55mm.

The Buchanan range is proven to filter up to 49% more airborne particles than the competition(1)

The filtration ability of Buchanan® and Buchanan® Lite stoma protectors was tested against two competitor stoma covers in a laboratory (1). The graph below shows the percentage of particles which each product was able to filter. Airborne particles equivalent to the size of mould spores, dust and some bacteria were tested (4.5 microns). These are small enough to be inhaled and reach the middle of the lungs.

The filtration ability of Buchanan® and Buchanan® Lite stoma protectors was tested against two competitor stoma covers in a laboratory (1). The graph below shows the percentage of particles which each product was able to filter. Airborne particles equivalent to the size of mould spores, dust and some bacteria were tested (4.5 microns). These are small enough to be inhaled and reach the middle of the lungs.

Buchanan® Stretch Cravats

Kapi-Clean®Kapi-Clean is a cleaning and storage solution for tracheostomy and laryngectomy tubes. Kapi-Clean consists of two parts, an inner basket and outer shell with lid. Kapi-Clean is used by placing the soiled tracheostomy or laryngectomy tube in the basket and submerging with cleaning solution. Once cleaned the basket can be lifted out of the shell and turned. In the turned position the basket will sit above the cleaning solution allowing the device to dry. Once the cleaning is complete the tube can be used or stored in a new Kapi-Clean until it needs to be cleaned again.
