Time to Renew Another year has passed and it’s time to renew your membership to Sangre de Cristo HOG Chapter. If you do this early, you will not miss any of the information that this newsletter brings and chapter emails offer. After January 15th, unpaid members will be removed from the roster and email lists. This will ensure that people that no longer wish to maintain their membership will not be receiving unwanted communications from us.

November 14th Meeting This meeting is important for all members. We will be discussing rides and overnights for the entire year. We want your input, it’s important to your board to hear from you on this. If you can’t make the meeting, and wish to have your ideas heard, email me @ [email protected]. Your email will be brought up at the meeting that evening. SDC-HOG Meeting @ Santa Fe Harley Davidson @ 6:00 in the family room. Pizzas will happen that evening. In conjunction with this meeting, the outcome will be placed on a ride card that will be available in the dealership. Speaking of the dealership, they’ve committed to helping us increase our membership and take on some of the burden of running the chapter.

Save the Date The combo Thanksgiving and Christmas Party will be held on December 13 @ Bourbon Grill @ 6:00. They took great care of us last year, so the room has been booked for us again.

Polar Bear Ride-January 1, 2020 I will lead the annual Polar Bear Ride to Las Vegas again. The day is a Wednesday, so we may have some of the Ole Fartz joining us. In an effort to make this a “waiver free ride” for all, I’m calling this a “ride with friends”, something that will be discussed at the 11-14-19 meeting. Everyone is welcome, Harley-Davidson, KTM, Honda, Slingshot, and other weird brands. Two wheels or three, join us for this ride.

Santa Fe H-D Manager’s Rides Today I finally joined one of these rides, led by Phoenix Ledoux, my manager at the Riding academy. No, I’m not sucking up, it’s been one of the few Saturdays I’ve been free this riding season. The route was geared to some of our newer riders, since an invite went out to all Riding Academy graduates. Better safe than sorry, right? We had 15 riders attending and all enjoyed the ride. A few of us went to the Plaza Cafe- Southside for a nice lunch. Phoenix led a good ride and we had a group of good riders, and even a few new faces. Got No More for This Month, So . . . A wife sent her husband a romantic text message.… She wrote: “If you are sleeping, send me your dreams. If you are laughing, send me your smile. If you are eating, send me a bite. If you are drinking, send me a sip. If you are crying, send me your tears. I love you.” Her husband texted back: “I’m on the toilet, please advise.”

David’s Corner November 2019

Mango 622 - On the Ragged Edge Well brother Jim and I put another Motorcycle Rally Race in the books. These races are clearly not for the faint of heart. They often only have 40-60 racers in the most remote parts of Mexico. They range from big fast dirt roads to tight mountainous two tracks to nothing but bushwhacking through mini-sand dune and underbrush. Throw in some very cool beach sections, great food, amazing night skies and some of the best people you will ever meet. In all my years (36 of them with a license) of connecting with fellow motorcycle riders and racers, I have rarely met one that I did not like or did not possess an adventurous spirit and love for two wheels. It seems even more evident when things don't go right. This is the time that you find out who is who. Brother Jim struggled with gas on day two and found himself with a bad fuel injector and stranded in the desert for 4 or 5 hours. We did a late-night extraction and got him back to the pit - fixed the bike and he was ready to ride again the next day. My lovely Debby has always said, if you want to test a relationship to its limits - go have a vacation that involves danger and intrigue. See how you do as a team in this situation and you will know the kind of person you have connected with. I guess it is how we started measuring our vacations by the "sphincter factor". I know so many of you have been on rides that did not go as planned. Sometimes they generate the best stories and it is over this adversity that makes us stronger and more bonded as a group. As is the case in most of these races.... things do not always go as planned. My personal plan was to do the race with no time penalties. Now having 6 of these races under my belt - I have struggled to run a clean race with no speed zone penalties or time penalties for getting lost and needing help to get back on course. The race was a solid 5 days of racing. We had a few big days to accomplish. Day 3 was what they call a "marathon day". It totaled over 640 KM (that is about 370 miles for you non-Canadians) of off road/no road racing. They started us while it was still dark in the morning and I was going to be the 7th man out on the course. Given its remote location I needed to carry some extra fuel in my backpack to make the whole event. I finished that special test day with a 3rd place (podium) finish in the Pro class. 3 Days of racing, no penalties and sitting 4th Pro overall had me psyched up. Then came day 4. Another big day...... Clearly that is when my competitive gene kicked in hard. I was wired up on day 4. I was running hot in the pro class and feeling like I could finish this event with an overall podium finish. Hell, I am not even sure how my 50-year-old ass was still in the Pro class. I was well behind the 25-year Pro Colton Udal but was right in the mix for a 2nd or 3rd place overall finish. It was going to be me and Mike Johnson these last two days. 300KM, that is what needed to happen for this day. At the 140 KM marker I was chasing Mike's dust cloud and had just passed Colton after he had some navigation challenges. We were now on a big, wide rocky as shit dirt road cutting over from the gulf to the coast. I knew I was in second and holding strong. We had a gas stop at 155KM and I decided to turn it up to get there, fuel up and keep rolling. Some might say I was on the ragged edge - I would have to agree. As I crested a small hill at full throttle in 5th gear I did not judge the hard left then hard right around an 8-10 foot wash out (ravine really). Me and the bike hit the hole - the bike caught on a rock and ripped the right foot peg from the frame of the KTM 450 I was riding. I went over the bars and into the hole. It was one of those moments I still remember. My eyes were open -

I saw the sky, the dirt, the sky and then dirt again. My day changed very quickly at that point. It was time to get to know the people you play with more intimately. First was Colton. He is 25 years old - a top racer who makes his living on a motorcycle. He has defended his Baja Championships a number of times and has been on the factory Honda team for a number of years. An impressive guy to say the least. As the first racer on the scene he got a glimpse of my bike hanging out of the ravine, stopped and came back to investigate. He jumped into the ravine and begin immediate assistance. He helped me climb out of the 10-foot hole then dislodged my bike and radioed for assistance. I was up and conscious - gave him a one thumbs up (my other thumb was broken) and he hopped back on his bike to complete the race. As I was only 10-15KM to the mid-way point and gas stop, help was quick on the scene. In this race we employ "Moto-Medics" that ride bikes and carry supplies to help those injured on the course. There were a number of guys that helped to attend to me. Eric and Mike were two that stood out and were immediately on the scene and in full medic mode. Needless to say - the race was over for me at this point. I clearly broke a few bones and my bike was out of commission. It took a moment for me to grasp this and not try and keep going. Once that realization hits, you switch into extraction/survival mode. Thanks to their quick help and the help of several other support people I was back at the race hotel getting the full check over. After some determination - I made the choice to head north back across the border and find my way to the San Diego trauma center. Once there, a hell of a team poked and prodded every part of my body. One of the coolest things about going into the Trauma center is they don't waste time or wait for paperwork. They get you in - the computer assigns you a name (I guess kinda like a hurricane) and they get rocking. My computer-generated name was "Mango 622". It has stuck with me a bit - as they were wheeling me out and the next guy in (he did not look good either) I kept yelling in my drug induced voice - "If I am Mango you have to be Nectar - good luck Nectar". The end of the day - I am alive - have a few broken bones that will mend and am already looking towards the future. Thanks to Scotty and his team for putting this event, congrats on Trent Burgiss for the overall pro finish and thanks to everyone that supported the efforts. I attached a few pictures for your pleasure. Have a great November - keep the wheels on the ground and enjoy what is in front of you. See you all shortly, David Pearson #29

Head Road Captains Corner Fritz “Rumblerider” Besch

November 2019

Greetings Chapter Members! Your Chapter RCs have again been working to improve our skills and performance in ways to make your rides safer and more enjoyable. I want to let you all know about some recent changes we’ve made in assuring Lead RCs are assigned for Chapter Rides. I also am very pleased with and want to share some of the additional things that have occurred in the RC Ranks during this past month. As you might recall (or maybe you haven’t heard), we recently had some of our members show up for a ride and there was no Road Captain to lead the ride! Everyone that showed up for the ride was OK with the situation and had other activities that they could readily engage in, but I was not OK with it. You should be getting the very best in ride leadership from your Chapter Road Captains not some willy-nilly commitment from a group of RCs that might or might not show up. I sincerely apologize for the lack of a RC for the CO. Hwy 17 ride. During my September RC meeting we discussed this situation and devised a methodology to assure it doesn’t happen again. For all future rides, the identified Lead Road Captain will provide the route no later than the day before (preferably 2 days before) the ride. This will assure that you have a RC assigned for the ride. If the assigned RC doesn’t provide a route, I will work my magic and assure that you have a RC to lead the ride. Not only does this address the issue of assuring we have an assigned Lead Road Captain, it allows all members to understand the route planned for the ride. I always appreciate knowing where I am going the day before the ride as it allows me to put the route into my GPS navigation system the night before. Additionally, we welcomed a new RC into our ranks in September. Next time you see Carl Seil, be sure to congratulate him on becoming our newest Sangre De Cristo HOG Chapter Road Captain. Carl has experience as a RC from his stint in Arizona, so he’s no newbie. I also had the pleasure to ride with Carl during our Arkansas trip this past May. He’s a very capable Road Captain and I am happy to have him join our ranks. At the end of September, three of your RCs attended the H-D Rider Academy, Skilled Rider Practice Class. That would be Gilbert Gurule, Carl Seil and I. We had a great time riding & refreshing skills that we all probably haven’t practiced in a while. The class was led by Glen and Dizzy, and they had fun poking on us all day long. If you are looking to improve your safety, learn how to better maneuver your bike in a more controlled manner, or build some additional muscle memory on stopping or avoiding obstacles, this class is highly recommended. We all thought the class was very beneficial and the instructors were top notch! It’s getting late in the year, but there’s still a lot of great riding weather for us to enjoy. I’ve been talking with our Director about holding a Group Riding Class before the riding season is too far gone. We have a group riding video from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and plenty of group riding brochures to hand out at the class. The class would be short, held around lunch and some food and drink for all of the participants would be provided. It’s hard for new chapter members to feel comfortable riding in a group when all you get is a short pre-ride briefing as the basis of your group riding knowledge. This would also be a great way for us to get together to visit each other and talk. Look for this to happen soon! I hope you appreciate the efforts we are making to help your rides be more enjoyable and safer. Ride safe and I hope to see each and every one of you out and about on an upcoming Sangre De Cristo HOG Chapter ride!

Assistant Director – Historian’s Corner Gilbert, “Brush Hog” Gurule

November 2019 This is my abbreviated version of the birth of Harley-Davidson Owners Group (H.O.G.). It is believed the term “HOG” was first used in relation to Harley-Davidson back in the 1920s. Coca-Cola has even mentioned they helped with the name (see pic below). The official Harley-Davidson company racing team AKA “Wrecking Crew” had a member who happened to be a small pig. How he filled out the membership application no one knows, ha-ha. Whenever a member of the Wrecking Crew won a race they would stop and pick up the pig for a victory lap. Soon after the race fans and media began to refer to the team as the “Harley Hogs”. One journalist remarked team H-D was “hogging’ all the track records. The name didn’t stick very well, but the word “hog” withstood the times and was associated with Harley-Davidson motorcycle enthusiasts. The word became official when the world’s first factory-sponsored motorcycle club appeared on January 1, 1993. Harley Owners Group ® (HOG). There is so much history that was left out in order to keep the above to a paragraph. Bottom line is sometimes things or ideas work and sometimes they don’t. Sometimes you have to reintroduce things or ideas again when previously they have failed. Maybe a mood has changed, or period has shifted (planets void of course, mercury out of retrograde). David how about a victory lap around the store with Sangre de Cristo’s HOG for all new bike purchases? It could be the sales associate or the new owner. We are trying new things and ideas and will probably introduce some things or ideas that didn’t work in the past. We want nothing more than for the group that we are “HOG” to be what it is intended to be a bunch of Harley-Davidson motorcycle enthusiasts enjoying each other and a good ride. Join us, we see you buying the bikes now Screw it, Let’s Ride!

Do you know its correct name? Do you know how old we are?

Text me your name with answers: 505-577-4743. Show up to our next public meeting (hint: read the newsletter). I will announce you and the correct answer then! – Ride safe! -- Brush Hog
