In case of medical or police related emergency the student should contact an RA first if one is present on the floor or known with certainty to be nearby in the building. IF THIS IS NOT THE CASE, call 911. After calling 911, contact the Head Resident Advisor, so they aware of the situation. The nearest hospital location is below:

The elevators are programmed to idle on the first floor when the alarm is activated. Do not hold the stairwell doors open. Leaving doors open makes the stairwells dangerous and unusableEvacuate as quickly as possible but in an orderly manner. Do not push or shove.Once outside, move at least 100 feet from the building.Return to the building only when given the “all clear” by university police or other proper emergency personnel. Do not assume when the audible alarm ceases it is safe to enter the building. Tornado/Severe Weather: The information below will prepare you to know what to do should we experience severe weather.

A tornado watch means that weather conditions are favorable for the formation of a tornado.A tornado warning is issued when a tornado has actually been sighted in the surrounding area. Emergency warning sirens are activated when there is a tornado warning. If a tornado warning is issued and you are inside:• Stay inside.• Stay away from outside walls, windows, mirrors, glass, overhead fixtures, and unsecured

objects such as filing cabinets or bookcases.• If possible, move to a below ground-level floor, interior corridor, or room or office without

windows and crouch low with your hands covering the back of your head and neck.• Do not use the elevators.• If requested, assist persons with disabilities to the safest area on the same floor.• Do not leave the shelter area until after the storm is over.• Continue to monitor the weather via radio or television until the tornado watch has been

lifted for your area.

Gunman: In the horrible event that an active shooter makes his or her way into a Joffrey dormitory, these procedures are in place to keep our students and staff members safe.

Report: Always report any suspicious activity that you observe.Keep alert. If you see someone unfamiliar enter the building, or someone behaving suspiciously, call or text the RAs and leave the area at once. If you overhear another student talking about kill ing people or threatening to bring a weapon to the school, report this to the RAs and law enforcement – you may prevent a disaster by doing so. Do not take their behavior lightly or as a joke. Report it immediately.

Alert: Communicate when there is a dangerous situation.Inform as many people as possible within the danger zone that a potentially life-threatening situation exists. This can be facilitated via many different methods (text, email, calling, personal senses). Staff will text and email as many students as possible in order to inform students. Evacuate: If it is safe to do so, remove yourself from the danger zone.If it is safe to do so, evacuate the area. If local authorities ask you to leave the area, they have a good reason to make this request so you should immediately act on their advice. Listen to a radio or television (with headphones) and follow the instructions of local emergency officials and JBS staff. When you evacuate, make sure you hold your hands up when you face police officers and stay out of their way. If you have information for them, make sure you communicate any updates. Lockdown: Silence All Electronic Devices. Barricade the Room.If you are unable to evacuate safely, find a room with a door that will lock. Lock yourself in and barricade the door, keep quiet, turn off the lights, and hide if necessary. You may communicate with the police if you have information regarding the active shooter’s location, and you may need a plan to counter or evacuate the room if the shooter enters. During a lockdown, do not let anyone into your room. Even if your friend is knocking and yelling for you to let them in – the shooter could be forcing them to do so. For your safety, do not let anyone enter your room after you have locked your door. Violence Or Criminal BehaviorJoffrey Ballet School shares the concerns that our dormitory remains safe and secure. Please be alert and report any suspicious situations and promptly report any threatening, violent or criminal behavior to the duty phone. When reporting an incident, please include the nature and location of the incident, along with descriptions of the people that were involved. Terrorism PreparednessIf a terrorist event happens while you are in class, follow the directives from Joffrey faculty and staff. If you are not in class when the event occurs, return to the dormitory as soon as it is safe to do so and observe lockdown procedures until further notice. The RAs will conduct a head-count and try to contact those who are not in the dormitory. The RAs will go door to door for updates and to issue the “all clear.” • If things are falling around you, get under a sturdy table or desk. When they stop falling,

leave quickly, watching for obviously weakened floors and stairways. As you exit from the building, be especially watchful of falling debris.

• Leave the building as quickly as possible. Crawl low to the floor if there is smoke. Do not stop to retrieve personal possessions or make phone calls.

• Do not use elevators.• Check for fire, smoke, and other hazards.• Once you are outside, do not stand in front of windows, glass doors or other potentially

hazardous areas.• Move away from sidewalks or streets to be used by emergency officials or others still

exiting the building. If you are trapped in debris: Use a flashlight, if possible, to signal your location to rescuers.• Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can hear where you are.• If possible, use a whistle to signal rescuers.• Shout as a last resort. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust.• Cover your nose and mouth with anything you have on hand. (Dense‐weave cotton material

can act as a good filter. Try to breathe through the material.)

ADDITIONAL HOUSE RULES

Building Safety & LockoutsFor safety reasons, students should not lean, climb on the ledge or fire escape. Students must not tamper with their room’s cable hookup, smoke detector, sprinkler systems, appliances, window treatment, or heating/air conditioning unit. They must not put anything on top of radiators, personal air conditioning units, or windowsills. Students and staff are also not allowed to clean the outside of windows. Safety Tips:• Always lock the door behind you• Do not give out keys to anyone!• Recognize who belongs on your floor v. strangers• Immediately report to the RA on Duty/HRA if you are uncomfortable with a guest• Always make sure you are familiar with whom you invite to the building. Don’t sign in a

guest who may prove to be a potential safety risk. Keys, Locks, LockoutsUpon check-in, each housing student will be issued a key card. This card must be electronically swiped on each door to enter the building. The card key will also give the student access to the interior doors of only their building, their dorm room, dining hall, and laundry facility. Key cards are $10 to replace.

Room keys are not to be given to anyone, including an authorized guest. Installing additional locks or changing locks on room doors is prohibited. • If locked out, call the RA on Duty who will assist you in letting you into your room.Because of the inherent risks involved within any housing in any campus environment, students are expected to be alert and to maintain personal responsibility for their safety. Students must lock the doors to their rooms. If there is a problem or concern, students should report the issue to the RA. Joffrey Ballet School and its staff do not guarantee and are not liable for the safety and security of room contents at any time.

Removal And DismissalIn addition to our three strike policy students may be dismissed from housing for reasons including, but not limited to, the following: (1) Dismissal from the Joffrey Ballet School Program or other program the student was attending in connection with their need for housing. (2) Disregard for quiet hours/disrespecting those living around you. (3) Damaging the premises and/or the contents of a unit. (4) Having unauthorized persons in rooms at times specified, or lending/giving room keys to any person. (5) Use of alcohol or drugs in the building. (6) Breaking the terms of the housing agreement.

COMMUNITY ETTIQUETE AND BEHAVIOR

Disorderly or aggressive behavior will not be tolerated. Joffrey Ballet School staff has the right to warrant strikes as they deem necessary for unacceptable behavior. Students shall not engage in inappropriate behavior with other occupants of the building and students of the opposite sex should never be alone in apartments. Students will treat the RA and fellow students with respect and courtesy.Common areas and property are the responsibility of all residents and guests. This is including, but not limited to lounges, study rooms, lobbies, stairs, community centers, recreation areas, laundry rooms, doors, swimming pools, walkways, fire extinguishers, elevators, exit signs and lights. Trash and recyclables should be removed to the proper receptacles outside the buildings. No one may sleep in the lounges, lobbies or public areas.

HALLWAY ETIQUETTE

Rehearsing, running, socializing/hanging out, and/or playing sports are not allowed in the hallway. Students are encouraged to stretch and practice in the studios before class begins. Food and drinks are not permitted in the hallways. Students are also not permitted to sit and socialize in the hallway, as it blocks egress and voices carry, which disrupts the whole floor.

QUIET HOURS

To accommodate a variety of sleeping schedules, quiet hours are in effect from 9PM to 7AM. This means voices should be kept at a low volume, headphones should be worn to listen to music, etc. Courtesy hours exist 24 hours a day. Volume from any individual room should not extend beyond the walls of that room.

Housing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Q: Whom should I call if…?A: The RA duty phone. The RA with the duty phone will usually be able to address your needs. If, for whatever reason, the RA on duty does not know the answer to your question, they will consult with their supervisor and either return your call or have their supervisor return your call.

Q: When will I receive a housing assignment?A: Usually, the Thursday prior to arrival you will receive a welcome email with information about the dormitory and any necessary paperwork to fill out prior to your arrival. If you have not received an assignment by Friday prior to your arrival, please contact the Director via email.

Q: Will my dancer be going to class alone?A: No. Those 12-13 years old will always be accompanied by their chaperone. Those 14 and older can sign up with an RA escort until they learn the route and become familiar to travel with a friend group. Students under 18 must always travel in pairs.

Q: My dancer’s uniform hasn’t arrived yet and they fly to tomorrow. Help!A: The uniform provider is a third party organization that is unaffiliated with Joffrey and thus we have no control over uniform delivery. However, no need to stress! Until your uniform materials arrive, your dancer may wear a black leotard and pink tights (for ballet), or black biker shorts/jazz pants with a solid black/dark color top (for jazz/contemporary).

Q: Can the meal plan accommodate food allergies?A: We work with our caterers to accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions and food allergies. If your dancer has special dietary needs, please submit a request through the dancer portal at your earliest convenience so we may alert our caterers.

MAIL AND PACKAGES

Unfortunately, since the Las Vegas program is only one week long mail and packages will NOT be accepted at UNLV. Processing mail at UNLV is a lengthy process and mail is sorted and transferred to several different sorting rooms before arriving at the dormitories. There-fore, mail would not get to the students on time.
