criteriawithSANS 1464-22 – Safety of Luminaires Part 22: Luminaires for Emergency Lighting.FurtherdetailsandexplanationscanbefoundinSANS 10114-2 – Interior Lighting Part 2: Emergency Lighting.Theinstallationmustalso

beregularlymaintained,testedandfullrecordskept.

The need for emergency lighting

Emergencylightingisprovidedforwhenthemainlightingsupplyfails.This

emergencylightisrequiredtohelptheoccupantsevacuatethepremisesquickly

andsafely.Theemergencylightingisonlyrequiredtobebrightenoughforthe

occupantstofindexitdoorsandtoavoidobstacles.

Specificformsofemergencylighting

Emergency escape lighting –thatpartoftheemergencylightingprovidedto

enablesafeexitfromabuildingintheeventofmainsfailure.

Standby lighting –thatpartoftheemergencylightingthatenablesnormal

activitiestocontinueintheeventofmainsfailure.

Escape route lighting –thatpartoftheemergencylightingthatenablesthesafe

exitfromabuildingbyprovidingadequatelightanddirectionfindingsonescape

routesandensuresthatthefirefightingandsafetyequipmentcanbeeasily

identifiedandused.

Open area (anti-panic) lighting–thatpartofemergencylightingthatis

providedinanopenareatoavoidpanicandtoenablesafemovementof

occupantstoreachanescaperoute.

High-risk task area lighting –thatpartofemergencylightingthatprovideslight

forthesafetyoftheoccupantsinvolvedinapotentiallydangerousprocessor

situationandenablespropershutdownprocedurestoensurethesafetyofthe

operatorandotheroccupantsofthepremises.

Underemergencyconditions,emergencylightingisusuallypoweredbyinternal

batteriesorastandbygenerator,whichareautomaticallytriggeredassoonas

themainssupplyfails.Theemergencylightsourcewillusuallybeaseparate

miniaturecompactfluorescentlampif“standalone”emergencyluminairesare

used.Itcouldalsobeoneofthenormallinearfluorescentlampsinastandard

luminaireoperatedatreducedpowerlevelwheninemergencymode.

Allemergencylightingrequiresapowersource,whichisindependentofthemain

powersupply.Ingeneralthiswilleitherbepoweredbybatteriesoragenerator.

There are two main system types:

Battery systemBatterysystemsmaybeoneoftwodistincttypes:self-containedandcentral

system.

Self-contained emergency systemEachluminaireisequippedwithabatterycharger/ballast,indicatorand

changeoverdevices(inverter).Thesecomponentsmaybeintegralwithinthe

luminaireoradjacenttoit.Self-containedsystemsareeasytoinstallandrequire

littleornomaintenanceotherthanroutinetestingtoensurecorrectoperation.

Theluminairesshouldbeconnectedtothelocallightingcircuitwherethereisa

dangerfromcircuitfailure.

Central battery systemThecentralbatterysystemisabatteryroomorcubicleinwhichthecharger,

batteriesandchangeoverdevicesarelocated.Inacentralsystemitisalso

essentialthatthewiringbeofaveryhighintegrity.Ifitisnotofasufficientlyhigh

standardthereisaconsiderableriskoflossofpowerduetofiredamage.There

mayalsobeapooroverallperformancebecauseofexcessivevoltagedropin

thecables.

Generator systemAnemergencylightingsystemmustreachitsrequiredilluminationlevelwithin

5seconds,althoughsomeauthoritieswillextendedthisto15secondsif

thebuildingisoccupiedbystaffwhoarefamiliarwiththesurroundings.Itis

essentialthateitherthegeneratorisrunatalltimes.Duringitsrequiredtime

orthetimethatthegeneratorautomaticallystartsandrunsupto,itsrequired

outputisin5secondsorless.Ifneitheroftheseconditionscanbeachieved,

thenthegeneratormustbesupplementedbyabatterysystemcapable

ofoperatingtheemergencylightingforatleastanhour.Inthiscase,the

generatorneednotstartupautomatically,butitshouldtakeoverfromthe

batterysystemassoonaspossible.

Modes of operation

Therearetwotypesofemergencyluminaires:Non-maintainedmodeand

maintainedmode.

Non-maintained modeInnon-maintainedmodethelampisnormallyoff,andonlyoperatesduringsupply

powerfailure.Whenusinganon-maintainedluminaire,thelamponlyprovides

emergencyescapelightingintheeventofapowersupplyinterruption.Ithasonly

onemainconnectionthatmustbeleftonpermanently.Thisconnectionisnormally

usedtochargethebatteriesandtodetectapowerfailure.

Non-maintainedemergencyluminairesareusuallyused:

• inareaswhereitisnotpossibletomergetheemergencylightinggearinto

theexistingluminaires;

• forhighrisktaskarealightingwherebright,directlightingisrequired

duringanemergency;

• forexistinglightinginstallationswhereitisnotfeasibletochangethe

buildingwiringandthelightingisonpermanently;

• forareafloodlightingwheretheexistinglamp(HID)isnotsuitableforuse

inanemergencylightingapplication.

Maintained modeAmaintainedluminaireprovideslightforbothnormalandemergencylighting.

Ithastwomainconnections:permanentlifeandswitchedlife.Thepermanent

lifeconnectionisusedtochargethebatteriesanddetectthepowerfailure.The

switchedlifeisusedtoswitchtheluminaireonandofftoprovidenormallighting.

Maintainedemergencyluminairesareideallysuitedforemergencylightingin:

• stairwells;

• generaloffices;

• escaperoutelighting;

• inareaswhereitispreferabletomergeemergencylightingintoexisting

luminaires;

• innewinstallationswheretheadditionalwiringrequirementscanbe

readilyaccommodated.

BatteriesTherearetwotypeofbatteriesusedforemergencylightingluminaires:

Nickel cadmium batteriesThenickelcadmium(NiCad)batteriesarethemostcommonlyusedforemergency

lighting.Thesebatteriesarerechargeableandthebatteriesarenormallyconnected

inseriesintoabatterypack–4batterieswillgivea4.8Voutputforanhour

durationand5batterieswillgive6Voutputforatwotothreehourduration.

Nickelcadmiumbatterieshavealonglife,upto10years.Theycanbekept

ontheshelfforoneortwoyearsbeforebeingusedwithoutanydetrimental

effect.

Lead-acid batteriesThesealedlead-acidbatteryischeaperbutrequiresmoremaintenancewhile

itsratedlifeisabout5years.Itisusedforhalogenlightsandother12VDC

devices.Whenthisbatteryisstored,itmustberechargedeverythreemonths.It

isseldomusedinfluorescentemergencyluminaires.

Servicing / Maintenance

Toprotecttheintegrityofanemergencylightingsystem,recommended

maintenanceandroutineservicingisessential.Thisroutineshouldbedetailed

andchecksrecordedinlogbookwhichisavailableforexaminationbyany

dulyauthorizedpersonnel.Thesepersonnelmusthaveattheirdisposala

generalbuildingorfloorplanandelectricalsystemassemblydiagramofthe

safetylightingsystem.

Monthly –testforashortperiodnotexceedingonequarteroftherateddurationofoperationoftheluminaire.

Annually –testeachluminairetoitsfullrateddurationofoperation.

Note: these tests should be carried out more regularly if there are many power failures of short duration in a short space of time.

IntermsoftheOccupationalHealthandSafetyAct1993(act850f1993)

asamended,periodicinspectionandtestreportsshouldbesuppliedtothe

personresponsibleforthepremises.

Open areas anti-panic lighting

Forareasthatarefrequentlyreconfiguredandthereforedonothavewithin

themclearlydefinedescaperoutes,forexampleopenplanofficesor

conferencefacilities.Theminimumlightingparametersareasfollows:

• Thehorizontalilluminationshallnotbelessthan0,5luxatthefloorlevelof

theemptycoreareawhichexcludestheborderof0,5metreofthe

perimeterarea.

• Theratioofthemaximumtotheminimumopenarealightingillumination

shallnotbegreaterthan40:1.

• Exitsignsshouldbevisiblefromanypartofthespace.

High risk task lighting

Highriskareasarethoseinwhichdangerousmachinesmustbeshutdownprior

toevacuation.

General requirements

The DDBC320-DALI is designed to provide cost effective control of DALI high frequency fluorescent ballasts. It has three DALI outputs allowing it to control up to 192 DALI devices.

TheDALIcontrolsignalscanbeprogrammedtooperateintandemwiththe

threeinternalswitchedoutputswhichwillautomaticallyisolatethepowercircuit

whenallassociatedDALIchannelsareat0%.Thisfeatureisusefulforenergy

savingapplications,asDALIballastsdrawasignificantamountofpowerwhen

thelampsareturnedoffviaaDALIcommand.DirectDALItoDyNetmapping

meansthattheDALIimposedlimits,suchasthemaximumof16groups,are

seamlesslyovercome.

tothecircuitbreakerssupplyingpowertothecontrolledlightingcircuits.The

The DDLEDC605 is designed to control LED loads in decorative architectural lighting applications where creative colour mixing and sequencing is required.

LED dimmers use Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technology

to great effect. Perfectly suited to Red, Green, Blue (RGB)

colour changing applications, chase sequencing or provision

of elegant scene settings. The Philips Dynalite LED drivers

come in a range of configurations to meet the compatibility

requirements of many of the available LED fittings.

Each device is ready to receive native DMX allowing them to

IncontrasttoDALI,however,itisnotpossibletoaddressindividualECGs

separately.

Thelow-voltagecableofthedigitalinterfaceispolarity-freeandcan

thereforebeconnectedwitheitherpolaritytotheDSIconnectionof

theECG.Iftheroomlayoutischangedonlythecontrollineneedsto
