Dear New Student,We are very excited that you have chosen to be a part of the Lasell College community. To begin your journey,please take the time to read this important packet ofinformation. Many of your initial questions aboutOrientation and about joining our community are answered within this booklet. This Welcome Packetcontains information that you and your family will need as you begin your educational journey at Lasell College.There are some important forms, located in the back of this packet, which we ask you to complete and return to us. Please be attentive to deadlines and complete all necessary forms.

We know that after reading this packet and checking out http://welcome.lasell.edu you may still havequestions. Please feel free to bring those questions with you to Orientation and we will be sure to answereverything for you. Or, if you cannot wait until then, do not hesitate to contact the Office of Student Activities at (617)-243-2475 or via email [email protected]. The Office of StudentActivities is open Monday through Friday 8:30 A.M. - 4:30P.M. Please note between July 9, 2012, and August 20,2012 the Office of Student Activities will be closed on Fridays.

Laser Link Orientation is our summer orientation program for first yearstudents. During this two-day program you will stay on campus, receiveacademic advising, register for classes, and meet other new students. It isan opportunity to connect with your new classmates, to learn about thecampus, and help to prepare you for the fall semester. This summer weare offering four sessions:

2012 Session Dates: • Session 1: *Monday, June 18 & Tuesday, June 19• Session 2: *Thursday, June 21 & Friday, June 22• Session 3: *Monday, June 25 & Tuesday, June 26• Session 4: Thursday, June 28 & Friday, June 29

*Students intending to major in Education, Humanities, or AthleticTraining are encouraged to attend these sessions but are welcome atany session.

The cost of the two-day Orientation program is $50.00. This cost includesmeals, lodging, and entertainment. Space for each of the summersessions is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.Please note: there is no particular advantage to coming to the firstsession; an equal number of spaces will be set aside in all first-yearclasses for each session. However, space is limited. We urge you toregister as soon as possible, especially if there are only one or twosessions that work for your schedule.

Please log onto http://welcome.lasell.edu and register for the sessionyou would like to attend. Before registering online, please see if anyparents or family members will be attending the family orientationprogram being offered (details on page 2) and secure a credit card foronline payment. You may also select to pay by check. If you choose to payby check, you will need to mail a check or bring a check with you to LaserLink Orientation. Checks can be mailed to: The Office of Student Activities,Lasell College, 1844 Commonwealth Avenue, Newton, MA 02466. Confirmation of your registration and orientation payment will be emailedto your Lasell email – please begin to check this email at least once aweek.

Check-in will be at Rockwell Hall beginning at 8:30 A.M. until 9:45 A.M .The program will begin promptly at 10:00 A.M. Orientation staff will belocated outside to greet you. During Laser Link Orientation, you will beassigned a room in Rockwell Hall with all of the Orientation participants.The program will be ending at approximately 3:30 P.M. on the second day.Anyone picking you up should meet you at Rockwell Hall, where you weredropped off. If you need to leave the program earlier than scheduled, youshould contact the Office of Student Activities in advance of the program.Students will not be allowed to leave the program without prior approval.Failure to adhere to this policy may result in the delay of your fall courseregistration.

The items that you will need to bring to Orientation are:• Extra-long sheets for a twin-sized bed, with a blanket, or a sleeping

bag, and a pillow;• A towel and a washcloth;• All toiletries, including shampoo, soap, hairdryer, and any other

personal items;• Comfortable clothing, such as shorts, t-shirts, jeans, a sweatshirt

or light jacket (it can get cool at night), something to sleep in, andcomfortable shoes; and

• An alarm clock.• You will not need money for anything unless you wish to make

purchases in the bookstore or purchase snacks. Pack lightly, as you will only be on campus one night. There will be nothing that you needto dress up for during the program.

Laser Link Orientation is staffed by the professional staff members fromthe Office of Student Activities and twelve student Orientation Leaders.The role of the Orientation Leaders (OLs) is to assist you throughout theprogram and help you find the answers to any questions you might have.These students represent a wide range of majors, interests and co-curricular activities. They have been trained to help you in the transition tothe Lasell community. You will be assigned to an orientation group withtwo OLs who will guide you through the Laser Link Orientation program.Check http://welcome.lasell.edu for more information about each of theOrientation Leaders.

Professional staff members who coordinate Laser Link Orientation includethe Director of Student Activities and Orientation – Jennifer L. Granger,the Assistant Director of Student Activities – Kristen Gallo-Zdunowksi,and the Coordinator for Student Organizations – Carlton Jones. Our staff members are happy to help incoming students with any questions or concerns. Parent and Family Laser Link Orientation is a program thatcomplements Laser Link Orientation. A variety of information sessions and other events are planned for your visit. Registration for the Family Program is processed concurrently with yourstudent’s registration.

PARENT & FAMILY ORIENTATIONDay 2 of each Laser Link Orientation Session8:30 A.M. – Winslow Academic Center - $15 per person (cost includes lunch)This program is designed to provide family members an opportunity tolearn more about the many aspects of the Lasell College experience, and to get information that will help to ease the transition period for allfamily members. The various sessions will include time spent with theVice President of Student Affairs, the Vice President for Academic Affairs,various staff members, and current students who serve as OrientationLeaders. This program has presentations about Student Accounts,Financial Aid, Residential Life, Information Technology, Athletics, Office ofStudent Activities, Study Abroad, Health and Counseling, Internships, andCareer Services. Check-in will be in the Glow Lounge beginning at 8:30A.M. until 10:00 A.M. The program will begin at 9:00 A.M. with anoptional Financial Aid Information Session. At 10:00 A.M. the Welcomewill begin. Orientation staff will be located outside to greet you. Theprogram will be ending at approximately 3:30 P.M. on the second day.

Transfer Students, we invite you to attend our Laser TransferTransitions program, which is scheduled to take place on August 15,2012. The Program is designed to provide you with the opportunity tomeet some key members of the campus community, to learn about theLasell academic experience that awaits you, and to get answers toquestions you might have about being a Lasell College student. Over thecourse of the day you will have the opportunity to meet with facultymembers from your academic department who will assist you in puttingtogether your fall course schedule, and learn about being a resident orcommuter student on the Lasell College campus.

Check-in for the Laser Transfer Transitions will begin at 9:00 A.M. in theWinslow Academic Center and the program will begin at 9:30 A.M. A light lunch will be provided and your day will be completed by 3:30 P.M.We will also have light breakfast options available at check-in.

Please register for Transfer Student Orientation athttp://welcome.lasell.edu and click on Transfer Orientation.Registration will open in late July. Please register by August 10,2012. Please note: the program is free to students and guests are $15.00each. Payment is due at time of registration. Confirmation of yourregistration and orientation payment will be emailed to your Lasell email– please begin to check this email at least once a week.

WELCOME BRUNCH Friday August 31st from 10:30 A.M. – 12:00 P.M.You and your families are invited to join members of the Lasell communityfor brunch in the Wedeman Art Gallery to welcome you to your new“home away from home.”

The program will begin with Academics at 12:00 P.M. – 1:30 P.M.Followed by F-1 Visa Regulations and Immigration Matters at 1:30 P.M. –2:30 P.M. This session will focus on immigration and the unique rules andregulations related to being an F-1 visa holder. There are a number ofregulations imposed by the U.S. government on F-1 visa holders that onlyinternational students need be aware of. The Office Presentations will beheld from 2:30 P.M. – 3:30 P.M. A Campus Tour will run from 3:30 P.M. –4:30 P.M. and will include: a visit with Department of Public Safety–students will receive their Lasell Student IDs; Office of Student Accounts–any student who has not finalized their bill with Lasell will have anopportunity to meet with a representative from student accounts; and anenrollment confirmation. All students are required to confirm theirenrollment with the Lasell College Office of the Registrar. Together wewill walk to Potter Hall, which houses the Registrar, Student Accounts andthe Student Financial Planning Offices. We will end the program with aWelcome Dinner 5:30 P.M. – 7:30 P.M. Come meet your fellowinternational students! We will meet in the lobby of the Arnow CampusCenter in front of the bookstore at 5:30 P.M. and drive to a nearbyrestaurant. This dinner is free of charge.

Lasell Laser Welcome Weekend is the second portion of ourOrientation program for new students. This three-day program takes placejust before classes start in September. During Lasell Laser WelcomeWeekend you will have the opportunity to explore Boston with faculty andstaff members and/or join the first year class on an evening cruise ofBoston Harbor, adjust to your new community, learn where your classeswill take place, and discuss your common reading. Students will learnmore about Lasell Laser Welcome Weekend during Laser Link Orientationand registration information will be available in mid August. Registrationwill take place at http://welcome.lasell.edu.

The Lasell College Orientation Welcome Website is designed to serve asa complement to this Welcome Packet. This site contains vital informationand will be updated throughout Spring and Summer 2012. To access the site, please open a web browser and type in the address:http://welcome.lasell.edu. You will need your Lasell username andpassword. This username and password will also be used for your Lasellemail account, logging on to computers in campus labs, registering forcourses, and many other campus technology systems. You can find yourusername and password in the enclosed letter. Please log in to ourPassword Management system at password.lasell.edu andchange your password to something you can remember for yourOrientation Program. Keep in mind that your username and passwordunlocks our system and your information, so keep it private and do notshare it with anyone. If you are unable to login with the provided accountand password, please call the Technology Help Desk at (617)-243-2200prior to Orientation.

FYSThe First Year Seminar (FYS) is part of the General Education CoreCurriculum and is a requirement for all incoming first year students. Thecourse requirement may be satisfied by completing FYS 103 (3 credits) orHon 101 (3 credits, for Honors students only). FYS is a theme-based coursethat allows you to take a class in a subject that interests you while also

assisting with the transition into the Lasell College community and theConnected Learning philosophy. Course titles range from The Art of BeingHuman to Witchcraft in History to Pop Culture. In an FYS course, you willfurther develop skills in public speaking, critical reading, writing, research,technology, and learning strategies required for college level work. In FYS you may expect to be involved in some or all of the following:

During Orientation, you will be given a list of FYS course themes. Facultyand staff will help you to understand the difference between sections, andyou can discuss your interests with them as well.

• Class discussions• Engaging activities on and off

campus• Team projects• Field trips• Civic engagement activities

• Service learning activities• Building connections with peer

mentors (upperclassmen whoserve as resources and rolemodels)

• Building connections withfaculty and peers.

ACADEMIC ADVISORYou will be assigned an academic advisor for your first academic year.Information regarding your advisor will be available to you in August. You will meet with this advisor periodically to help you:

• Monitor your academic progress;• Identify campus resources that can support your efforts to be

successful;

• Consider ways you can become involved and contribute to on-and-offcampus activities;

• Decide what courses and Connected Learning experiences will helpyou gain the preparation you seek for future-based goals, values andexpectations; and

• Clarify academic, career and life goals.Students will meet with faculty members during Orientation to help inpicking courses. Students will leave each Orientation program with acomplete course schedule.

Welcome to Lasell College Athletics!The athletic program at Lasell College provides student-athletes theopportunity to develop and display their talents through collegiate-levelcompetition. At Lasell College, athletics are considered an integral part of a sound educational experience with the goal to have each student-athlete strive to reach his or her potential on and off the field. The AthleticDepartment fosters the development of sportsmanship, community, fairplay, positive societal values and physical well-being for all participants.

Lasell's highest priority is to ensure that each student-athlete receives a superior education and successfully completes an academic program. We believe the leadership, teamwork and self-discipline learned on theplaying field are qualities that lead to both athletic and academic success.

Lasell College is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association(NCAA) Division III, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), theGreat Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) and is an associate member of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC). The College follows thephilosophy and the eligibility guidelines of NCAA Division III and of all associated conferences.

Lasell College sponsors the following varsity teams: Cross Country M/W;Field Hockey; Baseball; Basketball M/W; Lacrosse MW; Soccer M/W;Softball; Track and Field M/W; Volleyball M/W.

Anyone interested in participating on a varsity team must read thefollowing information:

• All incoming student-athletes must have a physical within 6 monthsof participation.

• All incoming student-athletes must complete and return all healthforms by August 1, 2012.

In addition to our varsity athletic programs, Lasell offers plenty of ways tostay active. Participate in club sports, like rugby and tennis, or compete onthe intramural level, or take advantage of free canoeing, kayaking and twofitness centers. Filled with free weights and cardio machines, both fitnesscenters are open to the entire Lasell community more than 85 hours eachweek. We also offer Pilates, kickboxing, step aerobics and muscle-conditioning classes.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR FALL TEAM TRYOUTS(Fall teams include: Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Field Hockey;Men’s and Women’s Soccer; Women’s Volleyball)

• All fall teams will have a one day tryout on Sunday, August 19, 2012.• Student-athletes who make the team will move into temporary housing

on August 19, 2012.• Student-athletes must have all financial aid documentation completed

and their fall semester bill must be paid in order to participate in thetryout day.

• Winter/Spring athletes—tryouts will be held when you arrive on campus.

• More detailed information for all student-athletes will be provided thissummer from the Athletic Department.

Center for Community-BasedLearning (C.C.B.L.)Lasell College’s Center for Community-BasedLearning (C.C.B.L.) provides support andopportunities for students, faculty, staff, and community organizations to engage inmutually beneficial projects. GETTING INVOLVEDThe Office of Student Activities believes that education takes place bothinside and outside of the classroom. We are committed to the educationof the whole student and work to provide a balance of social andeducational programming for our students.

The Office of Student Activities oversees the 43 registered clubs andorganizations on campus, coordinates Lasell’s four orientation programs,and maintains leadership development offerings that include StudentLeadership Scholars, Exploring Leadership, Emerging Leadership, StudentOrganization Series, and the Advanced Leadership Seminars. In addition,events such as Family, Friends, and Alumni Weekend, the annual AwardsBanquet, the Torchlight Parade, Welcome Week programming, anddiscounted ticket sales are run through the Office of Student Activities.

Incoming students should mark their calendars for the FallActivities Fair which takes place on Thursday, September 13, 2012.This is your chance to meet clubs and organizations, and sign up toget involved!

The Office of Student Activities is located in the Campus Center, on the2nd floor, and is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 A.M. - 7:00 P.M.during the academic year. TRADITIONSFounded in 1851, Lasell College has developed many traditions over theyears. We look forward to new students having the chance to become apart of the Lasell community and to build Laser pride!

Torchlight Parade – Dating back to the 1800s, graduating students and underclassmen would gather holding torches for the Flame Speech,when symbolic objects representing “irritating” issues from the past yearwere cast upon the fire. Also part of the program was a pledge to eachsenior in the circle, dressed in cap and gown. The last farewell was heldcommencement day at the Crow’s Nest. Today, the Torchlight Paradeincludes seniors and underclassmen who march from the Central ParkingLot to the Crow’s Nest where they give pre-graduation messages tounderclassmen and pass their torches to rising seniors.

River Day – River Day, now held each year on Family, Friends and AlumniWeekend in October, features canoe races involving family, friends, alumsand students. The canoe races at Lasell originally began in 1882 when thefirst Boat Club was formed. In the 1900s, River Day for many years washeld on the first Monday in June, then, later, it was rescheduled for lateMay. In 1972, the races moved to a fall date.

Class Banners – A class tradition since the first graduating class in1854, the banners were first made by Charles Parker, architect of theAuburndale Congregational Church. He continued that tradition for 20 years. Early banners were usually shields in red, white, and blue with class mottos. Later, some were made of silk and occasionallyembroidered. Today, the banners make a colorful display at graduationtime for those classes holding reunions.

Boomer – Lasell’s mascot was created in the spring of 2009, and Boomeris named for the industrialists, called “boomers,” who helped found Lasellin 1851. Dressed in Lasell colors, blue and white, Boomer carries theLasell torch, a longtime symbol of the college.

2. Once at http://moodle.lasell.edu you will need to log in with yourLasell username and password first. This was sent to you with this Welcome Packet.

3. After logging in, you will want to locate the Tests underneath the Laser Link Orientation heading.

4. You will be asked for an enrollment key to begin the test. Theenrollment key for Math Placement Test is math, for English PlacementTest is English, and for Spanish Placement Test is Spanish.

5. Take Tests.PLEASE NOTE: All incoming students must take the Math Placement Test.The English Placement Test is optional for students. Students are placedin an appropriate English course based on SAT scores. If you opt to takethe English Placement Test, both your SAT score and the placement testwill be used to place you in an appropriate level course. Math PlacementAll new students are required to take the Mathematics PlacementTest before attending Orientation. Your placement score will help youand your advisor select your first math course at Lasell College. When youtake the Mathematics Placement Test you may use a calculator and takeas much time as you need. However, the entire test should be completed

on your own and in one sitting. The Math Placement Test should becompleted before Friday, June 15, 2012 or as soon as possible.Submit your answers when you finish.

English PlacementAt Lasell College we believe that writing is a foundation upon which tobuild your college career. Therefore, you will enroll in writing courses forat least two semesters. To begin your writing coursework in classes withappropriate levels of support, you will be placed in a section of English101 based on your scores on the ACT/SAT writing exams. In addition,since we recognize that a standardized test score does not always providea full picture of your writing ability, we invite you to give us additionalinformation for making your placement by completing and submitting theonline placement essay. While this placement essay is not required, weencourage you to write an essay so that you will be placed in the bestEnglish course for your writing skills. There are three possible placements,each focusing on reading and writing nonfiction essays. If you choose tocomplete an optional placement essay, please use it to discuss whetheryou think English 101 LAB, English 101, or English 101 Honors would bethe best placement for you (descriptions for each of these courses can befound below). THE PLACEMENT ESSAY IS REQUIRED FOR STUDENTSWHO DID NOT TAKE AN ACT/SAT WRITING EXAM. If you are one of those students, you must complete and submit a placement essay. Wewill assess your essay in order to choose the right placement for you. If wefeel that we need more information in order to make the right placement,we may also ask you to complete more testing during Orientation. FIRST-YEAR ENGLISH COURSES OPTIONS:• English 101 LAB (3 credits): This course is designed for students who

need extra support to improve their writing. The course meets for five hours weekly in six class sessions with half of the sessions in acomputer lab where students work on writing assignments with theassistance of the instructor and writing tutors.

• English 101 (3 credits): This course is designed for students whodemonstrate average reading and writing skills. The course meets for two and a half hours weekly in three class sessions. Individual

conferences with the instructor are scheduled to give students theopportunity to work on projects and problems on a one -to-one basis.

• English 101 Honors (3 credits): This course is designed for studentswho demonstrate above average reading and writing skills. Thecourse meets for two and a half hours weekly in three class sessions.Individual conferences with the instructor are scheduled to givestudents the opportunity to work on projects and problems on a one-to-one basis. The reading and writing assignments for the Honors sections are more challenging than those for English 101.

Spanish PlacementAs you prepare to take the Spanish Placement Test, you should find aquiet place where you can work comfortably and complete the test in one

sitting. Work on your own, without the help of a grammar book, adictionary or another person; answer as many of the questions aspossible. Unanswered or skipped questions will count as wrong answers.Part of the test will include a listening and comprehension part. Like theEnglish Placement Test, the Spanish Placement Test is also optional forstudents. It is, however, required for students who plan to continue theirstudy of Spanish. HEALTHThe Health Services staff welcomes you to Lasell College. Located withinthis packet are Health Forms which are to be completed and returned to the Health Center office by August 1, 2012. In order to make yourregistration process go smoothly, please make sure that you make anextra copy of the forms and bring them with you when arriving on campus(DO NOT DETACH THE CARBON FORMS). Please include a photocopy of the front and back of your insurance card and send along with theHealth Form. Any student failing to provide the required immunizationdocumentation will be prohibited from registering and attending classes.You should make an appointment with your health care provider as soonas possible in order to avoid any delay in completing and forwarding your Health Forms.

The Health Forms consist of five parts:1. Personal Health History report should be completed by you or with

the help of parent/guardian. It concerns basic information about yourmedical history.

2. Physical Exam.3. Certificate of Immunization.4. Tuberculosis Risk questionnaire must be completed by your health

care provider.

5. Meningococcal Information and Waiver form must be reviewed andsigned if you choose not to have the meningitis vaccine.

If you are considering a Study Abroad Program during your Lasell Collegecareer, please ask your health care provider to administer the Hepatitis Avaccines. There may be other vaccines required for your particular travel,which are specific to geographic location. It is important for you to knowthat each Health Form is kept under the guidelines of HIPPA, and that noone has access to the Health Forms except Health Services personnel. Allvisits to Health Services (including treatments and discussions) are keptstrictly confidential, except in the case of medical emergency.

For all Athletic Training students, please make an additional copy of all ofyour health records, as you will need to present them to your advisor andyour college internships.

If you have special physical or mental health medical concerns thatrequire ongoing assistance from the Health Center (i.e. medication for ADD/ADHD), please start preparing for your needs now and bring the appropriate documentation. RESIDENTIAL LIFEResidential Life at Lasell College offers students a unique livingexperience. Like the classroom environment, Lasell prides itself on having small residential communities where students feel comfortableand connected.

The residential system is comprised of 26 residential buildings, of whichten are traditional-style residence halls, three are suite-style residencehalls and thirteen are residential houses. Lasell does not have designatedhousing for first-year students; however most new students will beresiding in our traditional-style residences which include Woodland,McClelland and Van Winkle Halls. New students are primarily assigned todoubles, triples, and in a few cases, quads. Students may also request tolive in one of three themed housing communities: quiet study, wellness orcommunity service. Additionally, female students may indicate apreference for single-sex living environments. Please note: some womenwill be assigned to an all female community, regardless of their indicatedpreference. Most new students will be assigned to residentialcommunities which are designated as ”dry,” meaning alcohol is notpermitted in the building regardless of the resident’s age.

It is anticipated that room assignments for incoming students will be emailed to your Lasell e-mail address in mid-August.Additional information about Residential Life can be found athttp://welcome.lasell.edu. The Residential Life office can becontacted at (617)-243-2115 or at [email protected].

If you plan to live on campus you will be able to sign your 2012-2013Lasell College Housing Agreement electronically as well as requestspecific roommates and/or indicate personal preferences to assist withroommate matching. New students will be able to log on to MyHousingfrom http://welcome.lasell.edu. The housing information describedabove must be completed by July 12, 2012 or as soon as possible.

Roommate requests will be honored whenever possible. Requesting oneroommate does not guarantee you will be assigned a double occupancyroom. Groups of three and four students may all request to be assignedtogether in a triple or quad, respectively. The person(s) that youindicate as your preferred roommate(s) must also request you in

order to be assigned together. Students may request to be placed on awaiting list for a single (single rooms cost an additional $1250 a year).Single rooms are usually assigned to returning students during the annualroom draw process. At this time, there are no single rooms available fornew students.

Reasonable accommodations can be made for students with adocumented physical or medical need. Documentation must be providedby a medical provider and submitted in writing to the Office of ResidentialLife. Please contact the Residential Life Office with any questionsregarding housing needs.

Incoming students are assigned to rooms according to the date that theirenrollment deposit was received by the College. Based on deposit date,themed housing requests, and double occupancy rooms will be assignedfirst; followed by triple occupancy and quad occupancy rooms.

Please review the important dates noted in the Housing Agreement. Pay particular attention to residence hall opening and closing dates andvacation periods during which students may not remain in housing. When you sign the on-line Housing Agreement you agree to reside in the Lasell College residence system for the entire academic year.

Lasell College carries no insurance covering personal property, andassumes no responsibility for items lost, damaged or stolen from studentrooms. Residents are encouraged to review their family personal propertyinsurance and obtain appropriate coverage. The following link is anexample of a source of student insurance http://www.nssi.com/.

FALL 2012 LASELL COLLEGE SUPPLEMENTALHOUSING INFORMATIONHOUSING STYLE PREFERENCES:Single Sex Living Environments Incoming female students have anopportunity to request all female housing. If you do not indicate apreference for all female housing, it will be assumed that you wish to beplaced in a coeducational living environment. IMPORTANT NOTE: Due tothe gender breakdown of the Lasell resident student population, there are sometimes more all female housing options than there are femalestudents requesting a single sex living environment. As a result, somefemale students, who did not indicate this preference, may be assigned all female housing.

Residence Halls and Residence Houses: Most incoming students willbe assigned to housing in traditional-style residence halls. The traditional-style residence halls tend to be larger communities which house primarilyfirst year students. Typically, this housing style features shared single sexbathrooms in a common hallway or corridor, with the exception of HoltHall, which features double rooms adjoined by private bathrooms. Thereare a limited number of spaces available for first year students in theresidence houses. The residence houses are smaller communities,housing between 15 and 30 students. The residence house communitiesare occupied by students of all class years and include double, triple andquad rooms.

QUIET/STUDY: (includes Mott and Ordway Houses for the 2012-2013academic year). Students choosing to live in quiet/study housing agree to maintain a quiet environment conducive to studying. 24-hour quiethours will be in effect between 7 P.M. on Sunday through 4 P.M. on Friday. Weekends will have a combination of quiet and courtesy hours.Quiet hours are those times when there will be no unreasonable noise.Courtesy hours are those times when excessive noise will not be allowed. Any guests brought into the quiet study houses must abide by all community rules. Residents of the quiet/study houses will sign a community agreement, and, if found in violation of the agreement, may be required to leave the community.

WELLNESS HOUSE: (Briggs House for the 2012-2013 academic year).Students choosing to live in the wellness house are committed to ahealthy lifestyle that will focus on balanced living in a variety of areasincluding nutrition, exercise, healthy relationships and living substancefree. All students living in this community will agree to refrain from use ofsubstances such as alcohol, tobacco products or other illicit drugs, at alltimes (in and out of Briggs House), and students agree never to return tothe community under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Any guests broughtinto the wellness house must abide by all community rules. Residents of the wellness house will sign a community agreement, and, if found inviolation of the agreement, may be required to leave the community.Depending on the interests of the residents, programming may include:community dinners, presentations on the mind-body connection, yoga and exercise, stress reduction, and spirituality.

WAITING LIST FOR A SINGLE ROOM: At the time of this mailing, there are no single rooms available for incoming students in the fall of2012. On the chance that a single room may become available, the Officeof Residential Life has established a waiting list for single rooms. If itshould happen that a single room becomes available, an assignment tothis space will be made in the order of enrollment deposit date. Pleaseremember that there is an additional $1250 charge for the year for a single room.

SPECIAL REQUEST: Any additional requests for accommodations (e.g., medical, accessibility issues) should be documented by a medicalprovider, on their official letterhead, and include a diagnosis and whataccommodations are being requested and then submitted in writing to theOffice of Residential Life. Additionally, please make sure that any officialmedical documentation has been forwarded to Lasell College HealthServices so that they may assist us in best meeting your needs. Requestsfor specific buildings cannot be honored. IF ALL PARTIES DO NOT MAKE MUTUAL REQUESTS,THE ROOMMATE REQUESTS CANNOT BE FULFILLED. Only students of the same gender will be housed together. Note: Many incoming studentswill be housed in triples and some will be housed in quads. Studentspreferring this type of living situation may request specific roommates, but would need to identify the names of roommates for all of the spaces(i.e., two additional roommates for a triple, three roommates for a quad.)Also please be aware that by only requesting one roommate you are notguaranteed a double room, as the number of double rooms is limited. For example, you and the requested roommate may be assigned to a triplewith a third roommate. The Office of Residential Life makes every effort to but cannot guarantee that all requests will be met.

COMMUTERLasell College is conveniently situated near the Mass Pike, Route 128, and the Riverside and Woodland “T” stations, so commuting to the Lasellcampus is an option that some students choose. Once on campus, ourcommuting students avail themselves of all of the resources and programsthat are part of the Lasell experience. Campus clubs and organizationsplan their meetings for the “common hours”, scheduled midday onTuesdays and Thursdays, during which no classes are held. Many of the College’s lectures, campus-wide presentations, and social andrecreational programs are purposely timed to take place during those“common hours”. Dining options include Valentine Dining Hall (in theEdwards Student Center), and “Campus Center Café” and “Grill 155,” two á la carte dining options located in the Campus Center. Commuterstudents may purchase one of the three meal plans: Block 25 (25 meals a semester); Block 50 (50 meals a semester); or Block 75 (75 meals asemester). More information can be found on page 12-13. Commuting toLasell is a great way to experience the best of two worlds! All commutingstudents are guaranteed parking in our Central Lot. Additional informationabout commuter parking can be found on the page 13 under Public Safety.A van shuttle service is provided to all students seven days a week(excluding break periods) throughout the academic year. The shuttlefollows a scheduled route that transports students throughout thecampus, and to the public transportation site at the Riverside “T” Station,the West Newton business district, and to a local supermarket. TORCH CARDIt’s your official ID that gives you access to everything you need, fromchecking out books from the Library to entering Residence Halls to eatingat the Dining Hall. The Torch Card program comes with a stored-valueaccount called Laser Loot, the convenient, cashless way to pay forpurchases on and off campus. This is optional, but highly recommended asa way to provide you with the resources you need for the whole semester.Once funded, your Laser Loot account balance will decline with eachpurchase you make, and you and/or your parents can make additionaldeposits at anytime throughout the semester. Welcome, Students!Lasell College Dining Services offers the quality, variety, convenience andflexibility that will make your college dining experience dynamic andmemorable. We strive to keep up with the ever-changing trends in dining by offering all of your classic favorites, along with ethnic dishes,vegetarian selections and even low-fat options in convenient dininglocations across campus. All of this is available to you by choosing one ofthe Meal Plans listed below. You’ll find options that will satisfy the mostfinicky diners and those who eat throughout the day.

Choices, Choices, Choices!To help you select the ‘right’ meal plan, first consider your dailyroutine…will your class schedule, studying, extracurricular activities and social event commitments interfere with dining? Secondly, consideryour own eating habits...are you an all-day snacker, or do you prefer three meals a day? Finally, might you miss dinner due to employmentobligations or evening classes? Anticipating the answers to these andsimilar questions will help you to select a meal plan that best fits your lifestyle.

Residents:• Gold Plan: 19 meals per week with $25.00 in Dining Dollars per

semester• Silver Plan: 14 meals per week with $75.00 in Dining Dollars per

semester• Bronze Plan: 10 meals per week with $125.00 in Dining Dollars per

Dining DollarsThey can be used in the Campus Center, Wolfe Café, or Glow Café. Thesedollars do not carry from semester to semester. The dollars are value onthe Torch Card (page 15).

Commuter Block Plans:In order to best meet the needs of our customers, we are introducing what are known as “Block Meal Plans”. These are meal plans sold inincrements or “Blocks” of 25, 50, or 75 meals and may be used at any timeduring the course of the semester. We have come to recognize that non-resident students enjoy eating in Valentine Dining Hall, although thetraditional meal plan is not as economically advantageous to thesecustomer segments which do not spend the majority of their time oncampus. Hence, we have developed options, which are more suitable tothese constituents.

• Block 75: $300.00 for 75 all-you-care-to-eat meals• Block 50: $200.00 for 50 all-you-care-to-eat meals• Block 25: $100.00 for 25 all-you-care-to-eat meals

Laser LootLaser Loot can be purchased by anyone who wishes to add value to theirTorch Card (page 15) and to enjoy delicious meals while dining with theirpeers. These funds offer the most flexibility and are a great value, as they can be used in the Valentine Dining Hall or in the Campus Center, WolfeCafé, or Glow Café. You can also use your Laser Loot at select off-campuslocations!

How does Laser Loot work? Your Laser Loot account works like a debitcard. The account allows you to draw upon pre-deposited funds topurchase food throughout campus. Having a Laser Loot account is a greatway to have the money you’ll need without carrying cash. And as anadditional value, these funds are tax exempt, so you’ll continue to save.Note: these funds carry over from year to year; any balances are refundedto the students when they leave.

PUBLIC SAFETYYour safety and security is the top priority for the Lasell College CampusPolice Department. The Department is responsible for safety, security, and law enforcement at Lasell. Officers are graduates of state certifiedpolice academies that are conducted by either the Massachusetts State Police or the Municipal Police Training Council. All are sworn police officers with powers of arrest and the same authority as any other police officers of the Commonwealth. In addition, all officers are trained in First Responder First Aid and respond to all medicalemergencies on campus. Police officers are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide for your safety. The Department alsoprepares and submits the annual Campus Crime Report which is required by the Jeanne Clery Act. UNDERGRADUATE BILLINGPOLICIES & FEE SCHEDULEACADEMIC YEAR 2012 – 2013

ENROLLMENT POLICYIn registering as a student at Lasell College,you agree to pay all charges on youraccount when due, and you agree to abide by the Billing Policies and Feesstated here, in the Course Catalog andStudent Handbook.

Your financial responsibilities to Lasell Collegeinclude meeting payment deadlines, fulfillingloan or grant requirements, and addressingoutstanding balances. The Office of StudentAccounts’ official means of communication are via the student’s home address on fileand/or the student’s Lasell email account. It isimportant to understand that communicationswill be directed toward the student, rather than a parent or guardian. If a parent or other individual is assisting with educationalfinances, please discuss all billing informationwith that person.

ACCOUNT PRIVACY POLICYPer federal regulations on the right to privacy,bills are in the student's name and therefore,the student bears the responsibility forpayment. All statements are mailed in thestudent name to the billing address on record. If a parent or another third party is acceptingresponsibility for making payments on thestudent's behalf, it is the responsibility of thestudent to share all correspondence, includingbilling statements, with those individuals.

A Billing PIN is issued to all students to assist in providing information while complying withprivacy policies. The PIN number is sent to eachstudent’s Lasell email account upon enrollment.Anyone calling the Student Accounts Office forinformation on an account will be asked for theBilling PIN.

PAYMENT SCHEDULEPayment for the Fall 2012 semester is dueby August 7, 2012.

Payment for the Spring 2013 semester isdue by January 3, 2013.

Please contact the Office of Student Accountswith any questions regarding your statementwell in advance of the payment due date.

LATE PAYMENT AND RETURNED CHECK POLICYA late charge of 18% per annum (1.5% permonth) will be assessed to accounts not paid bythe due date. Any check returned unpaid willresult in a $25 fine. The College reserves theright to suspend or terminate services and/orenrollment due to delinquency in payment. Inthe case of delinquent accounts, if an outsidecollection agency is utilized, the student’saccount will be assessed collection fees.

ALTERNATIVE PAYMENT POLICYIf you choose a payment plan or loan to pay your bill, applications must be approved andcompleted prior to the payment due dates listedunder the ‘Payment Schedule’ section. Whendetermining the amount to borrow, any feecharged by the lender must be added to thebalance due to Lasell College to insure yourCollege account is paid in full.

ACCIDENT AND SICKNESS INSURANCE POLICYThe Commonwealth of Massachusetts mandatesaccident and sickness insurance coverage for allstudents enrolled in at least 9 credits per semester.Lasell College will initially bill all students enrolled in 9 or more credits for the insurance plan. Students in an existing plan with comparable coverage maywaive the fee by completing the online waiver form at www.consolidatedhealthplan.com.International students are required to purchase the Lasell-sponsored insurance plan, regardless of other coverage.

The health insurance fee will be credited to thestudent’s account upon the College’s receipt of thewaiver information, provided the information issubmitted by published deadlines. Students who donot submit valid waiver information will be enrolled in the plan and are responsible for the associated fee. Health information sent to the Health Center,Registrar’s Office or Athletic Office does not absolvethe student of submitting proof of coverage via the online waiver process. Once purchased, the planmay only be cancelled if the student enrolls in thearmed forces.

FEE DESCRIPTIONSFull Time Tuition: Covers the instructional costs for a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 18 credit hours per semester. Studentsexceeding 18 credit hours per semester will be charged per additional credit.

Comprehensive Fee: Pays for servicesavailable to all students, such as: transfer credit evaluation, student activities, technology services, athletic facilities, original identification cards, graduation, and use of the College Health Center.

Room and Board: Includes the cost of roomand a meal plan. All students residing oncampus must be enrolled in the meal plan. Mealplan selection does not alter the cost of Roomand Board. For further information about yourobligations regarding Room and Board, see the‘Housing Changes’ portion of this document. Dorm Damage Deposit: Charged the firstsemester and credited back to the account atthe end of each academic year; applied towardany individual and/or communal damage costsabove normal wear and tear, as assessed by theResidential Life staff. Fashion Design/Production Major Fee:Charged to all students enrolled in the FashionDesign and Production major to cover the basiccosts of clothing construction. This fee does notcover the cost of the clothing construction kit tobe purchased separately. Lab fees may alsoapply to courses within this department. TheFashion Design and Production Fee is notreduced or refunded for changes of major madeafter the add/drop period.

Lab Fees: Fees ranging from $20-$100 arecharged for materials, services and otherextraordinary costs for courses such as FashionIllustration, Pattern Generation, VisualMerchandising, Fashion Promotion and

Photography. Lab fees are not reduced orrefunded for schedule changes made after theadd/drop period.

Parking Permit: The College requires allvehicles parked on campus be registered withPublic Safety. Parking is permitted in assignedlots only. Unauthorized vehicles may be ticketedor towed. Please direct questions regardingcampus parking to [email protected].

ACCOUNT ADJUSTMENT & REFUNDPOLICIESStudent Account with a Credit BalanceRefund checks for credit balances occurring as aresult of excess loans or financial aid will not beissued until the entire loan and/or aid fundshave been received by Lasell College. Creditbalances for enrolled students will remain onthe account unless requested by the student, orfederal funds exceed the cost of attendance.Refunds will be issued within three weeks ofthe request and will be made payable to thestudent. Students who request a refund checkprior to the end of the academic year under -stand that, if additional charges are assessedand/or financial aid is adjusted followingreceipt of a refund check, a balance may be due to the College.

Enrollment ChangesStudents who change their status from full timeto part time, OR part-time students who reducetheir number of credits, after the Add/Dropperiod will be responsible for 100% of tuitionand associated fees for the semester.

Housing ChangesStudents wishing to change their status fromresident to commuter at any point in theacademic year must petition the Director ofResidential Life in writing for release from the

Housing Agreement, and may be assessedpenalty charges as outlined in the HousingAgreement. Students who change their statusfrom resident to commuter after the Add/Dropperiod, will be responsible for 100% of Roomand Board charges for the semester.

Withdrawal from the CollegeThe above Withdrawal Adjustment Scheduleapplies to a student who has completed theappropriate steps to cancel his/her enrollment

at Lasell College. Non-attendance does notrelieve the student of financial obligation orimply entitlement to a refund. Please contactthe Registrar’s Office for proper withdrawalprocedures.

Room and Board will be adjusted according tothe schedule to the left only if the room isvacated within the time period determined bythe Office of Residential Life. Studentsremaining in housing past the time periodgranted will be charged for daily Room andBoard.

For purposes of account adjustments, nodifferenti ation is made between voluntarywithdrawal, administrative or academicsuspension. Unpaid charges may remain afteradjustments and will be owed to the College.
