Laser level productsCoal fired power plants
Coal fired thermal power plants handle huge amounts of coal throughout a complex process scheme. This requires flow and quality to be optimized constantly and to a very high degree of efficiency to reach adequate profitability. ABB pulsed laser technology provides the best in class solutions to the industry.
Measurement made easy
Introduction
Coal fired power plants now face more challenges as the demand for energy increases resulting in morning ramps requiring faster responses and peak demands requiring larger capacities. Such operational issues imply a tighter control of each process for maximized efficiency. In some countries, cost reduction is also needed to cope with competition, such as natural gas, and to reduce impact of plant upgrades to comply with environmental standards. ABB laser level transmitters, positioners and volumetric scanners offer fast, accurate and precise solutions for stock management and quality control at several strategic points in the power plant.
Stock management is a key contributor to power plant profitability. It’s all a matter of reducing holdings while keeping a constant and effective flow. Inventory can be optimized on many facets such as stockpile size, stockpile turnover period, stock level fluctuation and timely stock management.
Quality control is also of great significance and aims at reducing random quality variations and at optimizing blends according to power plant’s own requirements.

Easy laser level measurement throughout the plant
ABB laser level transmitters can be easily installed in silos, bunkers, hoppers, conveyors or feeders to constantly monitor coal height. They can also be used as positioning devices to track tripper cars, stackers, plough feeders and reclaimers at very long distances. Signal output can be sent to the controlling systems and actions can be triggered by relays.
ABB laser scanners can be installed in stockyards, warehouses, domes, silos or bunkers to precisely and accurately quantify the volume of coal in sight, either for large stockpiles or for contained areas such as small bunkers. Irregular shapes or interfering infrastructures are dealt with through a service of data treatment that returns reliable information in a timely manner.
The technology also applies to wood or biomass for which some power plants get converted.
