Hello! We’re a group of Lassonde students, and we’re excited to welcome you to our School.

You must be excited and overwhelmed as you narrow down your university choices.

We get it. We’ve been there.

So we started thinking about how we can help you explore our School. We got together and decided it would be helpful to know what it’s really like to be a student here.

So we created this guide.

We have collected stories from current students and alumni, plus tips and tricks to help you get to know our School a little better. We have shared our passions that we have evolved during our time at Lassonde and the perspectives we have gained. All in an effort to give you a real take on student life here.

It’s not always fun, and nothing is perfect. We all have good days and bad days, highs and lows, happy times and sad moments. Despite this, we really enjoy being students here at Lassonde.

We have made incredible memories that will last forever - that’s life at Lassonde!

If you want to know more, join us in the Lassonde Community. You can post questions and we’ll answer anything you’d like to know.

Good luck with your decisions and planning for your future!

Talk soon (we hope!) and stay in touch.

For me, home is a feeling of belonging, no matter where I am.

I was born in Bangladesh and raised in Dubai. In Canada, home has presented itself by way of warm connections with new friends and exciting learning opportunities.

In my new chapter at Lassonde, I am constantly learning and applying. In my second year, I designed a code to control the movements of an automated vacuum cleaner using an app. The prototype came in third place at Elle Hacks, Canada’s first all-female hackathon. This amazing experience let me test out my ideas in a supportive environment of peers.

I look forward to the day I will be able to give back and contribute to my home – the Lassonde community.

As a young froshie, I found my community right away during Week Zero (Lassonde’s frosh week). Everyone involved was welcoming and kind. The week made such an amazing start to my Lassonde journey that I decided to become Orientation Chair for Week Zero in my third year.

I have continued to grow my community of passionate people throughout my undergrad.

I participated in the York Engineering Competition, where I f nd l ke-m nded e le als love designing and creating.

I’ve also volunteered with the Lassonde Engineering Society for the past three years and served as President!

Dive Deep Lassonde Guide | Passion + Perspective

Explore all the things you’re most passionate about.

Dedicated profs will guide you as you develop a strong technical foundation for your program. At the same time you personalize what you learn – question it, implement it, remix it. Learning in and outside of the classroom is key, whether you’re solving a new problem or redefining existing solutions.

Learning to Learn

Dive deep into real world problems, ones that are ambiguous and boundless. You’ll work with your peers to tackle challenges – ideating, prototyping and testing your solutions along the way.

Design Projects

Experiment, visualize concepts, understand technology, bring learning to life. Mix concrete, study flow in water turbines, or troubleshoot code – you’ll learn how to apply theoretical principles of your program.

MAHRUS‘20 Electrical Engineering

My passion for Electrical Engineering stems from my interest in automated systems, creating programs that can repeatedly and reliably produce the right results.

After studying Electrical Engineering at Lassonde for three years I wanted to take what I learned, apply it to the real world and gain some new perspective.

At Tesla I did just that as a Software Engineering QA Intern. My responsibilities include writing automated programs that test the UI on the infotainment system for the models S, X and 3.

m t ankf l f r t s c - rt n t , as t as all ed me to see the impact my education can have beyond the classroom.

This experience wouldn’t have been possible without the tools I picked up in my program. I feel really prepared for the challenges ahead.

RAMONA‘19 Computer Science

I want to devote my time to making an impact on today’s

tech culture.

As former President of York’s Women in Science and

Engineering chapter, my team and I organized inclusivity and

diversity events in hopes of enhancing the student

environment forminorities in technology.

When I learned that women hold less than 20% of all Canadian tech

jobs, I knew I had to act. With support of the Lassonde community, I organized

and hosted ElleHacks, the largest all-female ackat n n Canada

Lassonde gave me the platform and support to amplify my passions and successfully spark a change not only

locally, but across the country.

Life Beyond Lassonde

While you’re learning in your program, getting involved in the community, and going on co-op placements, you’re preparing yourself for life beyond Lassonde.

When you graduate, you’ll be ready to take on opportunities that come your way and make them your own.

As you take your technical and professional skills into the real world, you won’t be leaving the Lassonde community, you’ll be growing it, enhancing it.

It’s not just about getting through university. It’s about being ready for whatever may be next.

The most exciting part about transitioning from school to a career has been realizing how well my program, my experiences and my profs at Lassonde prepared me. From supporting me in balancing my coursework with a student job, to helping me make professional connections – my profs and peers kept me motivated.

How To Get HereHow to get to campus

The subway is the best way to campus via transit - there’s two stations here at York.

Using Google Maps once you arrive is the best way to find your direction.

A Presto card ca be purchased at most stations; it’s the easiest way to get around and is accepted on all transit services.

Transit

There are a variety of parking options including indoor garages and outdoor lots.

Find a lot near your classes and get your parking pass at yorku.ca/parking.

Driving

There are many bike racks across the campus, including several bike maintenance stations.

Where To Live

York offers a variety of options from traditional residences with shared common spaces to suites with kitchen facilities. Students typically select their residence based on style, program, and class proximity.

Residence

The Village is a residential area south of York’s Keele Campus that is comprised of privately owned houses. You will share amenities with other tenants who may not be members of the York community.

The Village

An apartment-style option for students with a range of living amenities. There is access to gyms, lounges, laundry facilities, and study spaces.

Tech TipsHow to choose a laptop

You’ll be using a lot of SolidWorks/AutoCAD so having a higher end Windows computer with a dedicated graphics card is ideal.

We have multiple computer labs across campus for projects, in and out of class. However, it can be convenient to have a personal device to work on assignments and labs.

Here are a couple of things to consider when buying a laptop for your university life.

It’s nice to have a UNIX-based system (Mac or Linux) for some of the development tools that come out of the box, but you can configure a Windows machine to have those tools as well. There are some Windows-only programs which you can use the lab computers for.

TextbooksNavigating University Textbooks

Hold off on buying any books until after the first week of classes. Your professors will tell you exactly what you’ll need to get.

Many first year classes require you to purchase an online access code so keep this in mind while purchasing pre-owned books. The codes can usually be purchased separately.

Visit the campus bookstore or order online to avoid long wait times. Another option is to borrow the book from the library.

Once you complete the course, you can resell your books at the bookstore or online.

ANDREW‘19 Computer Engineering

When it was time to decide on a path of study after high school, I considered my interests – software and electronics – and chose Computer Engineering as it let me do both!

Now its almost time for me to look back at my journey at Lassonde. Since I joined Lassonde, I’ve picked up new skills in my courses, developed my portfolio d r n m c - at H dr ne, and sta ed connected with the Lassonde community by starting a new club.

My passion comes from the fascinating world of technology. I love keeping up with the latest developments, and soon being able to contribute to that world is very exciting.

EINAS‘16 Computer Science

As my time at Lassonde came to a close, the reality of graduating dawned on me. What will I do when I graduate? What kind of job will I get? What type of projects will I work on? At Lassonde, I had made lifelong connections with people who were branching out of the Computer Science program in different ways – working at big companies, creating startups, pursuing graduate school, some staying local others going global.

There were so many options! As I searched for my next steps, I learned that the field f c m ter sc ence c nt n sl re- n ents tself and it's okay to spend some time searching for your
