Subject: Objection to Walgreens on Solano Ave.

Dear ZAB, I am writing to express my strong objection to the Walgreen's Project on Solano Ave. I urge the Planning Commission to pass the zoning ordinance proposal, drafted originally in 2011, to limit drug stores citywide from opening within 1000 feet of each other.

Berkeley already has 6 Walgreen's and does not need another one.

All products sold at this proposed Walgreen's are already sold by local businesses within 1-2 blocks of the location. (Case in point: Andronico's, Sal's Pharmacy, Pharmaca, and Payne's Stationery.) This will put unfair economic strain on local businesses.

It is important to keep the authentic charm of Solano Ave., Walgreens does not do that. I shop local but will not shop at this Walgreens if it comes to our neighborhood.

There is insufficient parking.

This store will cause more traffic at an already difficult intersection that traffic planners have already tried to address

Solano Avenue has Sal's Pharmacy, an independent pharmacy, devoted to providing patients with a comprehensive stock of pharmaceuticals, including generics, paired with a community-based pharmacist.

The short stretch that is Solano Avenue already has CVS and Safeway pharmacy chain stores. Nationwide, these large chains are building big box drugstores in astoundingly close proximity. As a physician, I find that chain pharmacies don't always have generic medications in stock, and I have received calls to change prescriptions. I have not had that happen at Sal's independent pharmacy. We truly have all the drugs we need at the top of Solano, and I oppose the Walgreen's project on Solano.

Dear People,

Please, I urge the planning commission to pass the zoning ordinance proposal to limit drug stores citywide from opening within 1000 feet of each other. Really, isn't enough enough? And please know that the voters in my house strongly object to the Wallgreen's project on Solano Ave. You've allowed a 400 niche columbarium to be constructed in a strictly residential area in the effected neighborhood. Re: Redevelopment at Solano and Colusa

Dear Planning Commissioners:

Bike East Bay (formerly East Bay Bicycle Coalition) represents the interests of over 4000 member bicyclists throughout 33 cities in Alameda and Contra Costa counties, along with over 5000 members of our affiliated clubs and organizations. We are dedicated to making our neighborhoods safe and comfortable for people of all ages and abilities to bicycle.

Attractive, walkable retail districts and safe streets are two of the most important elements of a bicycle friendly neighborhood. In our view, the proposed Walgreens at the corner of Solano and Colusa is a vast improvement over the 76 station on both accounts.

Perhaps most importantly, the new building would eliminate the unique traffic hazards presented by the gas station. The wide curb cuts typical of gas stations allow cars to make a low angle high speed maneuver across the path of bicyclists and pedestrians that puts both at an elevated risk. This dangerous configuration presents a threat compounded by the fact that gas stations draw more auto traffic than other retail.

In addition to reducing traffic hazards, the new Walgreens building, designed by a local architect and landscape architect, would restore the once continuous band of store fronts on Solano, helping to heal one of the most intact historic main streets of the East Bay. It would also create landscaped seating areas on the corner where bicyclists could enjoy the bounty of the local food cluster.

A small detail that we rather appreciate is the commitment to supply compressed air to the covered public bicycle storage on Solano.

We encourage you to consider support for the project and urge you to reject an ordinance that appears deliberately designed to obstruct it.

Thank you for your consideration.

Subject: New Walgreens

Dear planning commission

I would like to express my opinion regarding this ordinance to prohibit any

drugstore over 5000 ft.² from going in within 1000 feet of any existent drugstore.

This action simply seems un-American and plain and simple seems a violation of

free marketplace practices.

I doubt Walgreens is protected from a Walmart going in near them. I also doubt

that Safeway would like to be prohibited from going in because there are mom-

and-pop grocers nearby or vica versa.

I'm not sure if I will be a regular customer at Walgreens or not.I do believe they

have a right to operate and compete with both big and small businesses and

consumers should have the right to make their choice and spend their hard

earned dollars as they see fit. Ultimately it's consumers that win when there is

competition.

Thank you
