WELCOMEFrom Seattle Theatre Group, a non-profit arts organization

We proudly welcome you to the start of Seattle Theatre Group’s 2019/2020 Performing Arts Season, featuring a lineup of proficient, innovative artists who bring a wide range of talent to our historic venues!

As the people’s theatre, where all are welcomed and represented, STG is committed to advocating for greater participation in the arts by granting access for all, reducing barriers, and including diverse people, cultures, and perspectives on our stages. This season has been carefully curated to support these values, and as we kick off our season with these fall events, we look forward to the varied experiences and conversations we hope these performances will inspire.

The season opens with the world premiere of The Sun Still Burns Here, an evening-length dance and music project created by Seattle-based choreographer Kate Wallich and her company The YC and musician/composer Mike Hadreas of the band Perfume Genius. The piece, which was commissioned by STG, blends Hadreas’ music with Wallich’s choreographic narratives to radically integrate an indie rock performance with contemporary dance.

Throughout the month of October, we are working in association with LANGSTON to present our Silent Movie Mondays: Pioneers of African American Cinema Series, which highlights influential and innovative African American artists from the silent era, bringing attention to the significant role these artists played in the early days of cinema.

In a special collaboration, we are partnering with On the Boards to present composer Bryce Dessner’s and librettist Korde Arrington Tuttle’s Triptych (Eyes of One on Another), which uses music, images, poetry, and a performance by vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth to capture the complex effects of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe’s works. Electro-acoustic polymath MAX RICHTER then rounds out the month of October in a performance with American Contemporary Music Ensemble and Grace Davidson.

In November, we present two performances that bridge cultures and expand boundaries. First is Indian Ink Theatre Company’s Mrs. Krishnan’s Party—at the Erickson Theatre—which offers an evening of laughter, tears, good music, and great food as the audience is invited around a dining table in the back room of an Indian-run convenience store. Then comes our annual Global Party show, a high energy performance of cultural and contemporary dance and music that gives students and families the opportunity to learn more about their world and the diverse Seattle community.

With the success of last year’s sold-out performance, we welcome The Hip Hop Nutcracker back to The Paramount for two performances this holiday season. This contemporary dance spectacle set to Tchaikovsky’s timeless music is a modern take on a beloved classic and is not to be missed.

We want to thank you for helping us kick off our new season, and we look forward to sharing these, and all of our upcoming performances with you throughout the coming year!

THE MOORE THEATRE OCTOBER 4 & 5

The Sun Still Burns Here is an evening-length dance and music collaboration between Perfume Genius and Kate Wallich + The YC commissioned by Seattle Theatre Group, The Joyce Theater and MASS MoCA. The Sun Still Burns Here had its World Premiere at The Moore Theatre in Seattle and will tour to The Joyce Theater, The Walker Art Center Co-Presented by SPCO’s Liquid Music Series, and ICA Boston.

Combining Perfume Genius’ unique sound with the exacting craft of Kate Wallich’s choreographic narratives and Amiya Brown’s expansive production design, The Sun Still Burns Here unravels themes of deterioration, catharsis, and transcendence from the body. Wallich and Hadreas unite a team of musicians, dancers, and designers to create a stunning and emotionally complex performance that radically integrates indie rock with contemporary dance.

The Sun Still Burns Here was created in collaboration with longtime Perfume Genius collaborator Alan Wyffels, the artists in Wallich’s company The YC, costume stylists cuniform, Art Director Andrew J.S., and Production Designer Amiya Brown. The work features Perfume Genius, Kate Wallich, Lavinia Vago (The YC, RUBBERBandance, Sidra Bell), Thomas House (The YC, Kyle Abraham, Merce Cunningham Trust), David Harvey (The YC, Alonzo King Lines Ballet) and Andrew Bartee (The YC, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Ballet BC). This work was developed over the course of 18 months, supported by creative residencies at the Joyce Theater Foundation’s Artist Residency Center and technical residencies at MASS MoCA and at The Moore Theatre in Seattle. ‘The Sun Still Burns Here’ is commissioned by Seattle Theatre Group and MASS MoCA and was commissioned and created, in part, with the support of The Joyce Theater Foundation’s Artist Residency Center, made possible by lead funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Howard Gilman Foundation, LuEsther T. Mertz Charitable Trust, and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. The Sun Still Burns Here was supported by New Music USA, made possible by annual program support and/or endowment gifts from The Andrew Mellon Foundation, Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, Baisley Powell Elebash Fund, and The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation. Production of ‘The Sun Still Burns Here’ is made possible with major support from Studio Kate Wallich. This presentation of The Sun Still Burns Here was made possible through generous support from Hotel Theodore and Hotel Max, Provenance Hotels.

About Perfume Genius:Perfume Genius is the nom de poster-wraith of American pop-star Mike Hadreas, whose 2014 breakout album Too Bright marked a musical and performative leap that sounds unlike anything before or since. With the songs on his wildly acclaimed Blake Mills-produced, GRAMMY nominated 2017 album No Shape, he’s gone even further, merging church music, makeout music, R&B, art pop, krautrock, and queer soul into his take on stadium anthems.  This is church music the same way Prince’s Black Album is — too dirty. And it is femme art pop the way Kate Bush’s The Dreaming is — too scary — its emotions arranged all along the slippery continuum from rage to irony to love.

Perfume Genius has graced the stages of late night television shows (Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Late Show with David Letterman, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert), prominent venues including the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Greek Theatre at UC Berkeley, and Forest Hills Stadium in New York among many others. They have been featured in publications including GQ, New York Times, Pitchfork, The Guardian, Vogue, and the cover of The FADER.

Seattle Theatre Group’s Education and Community Programs (ECP) invest in meaningful experiences for our community and future generations of performing artists. Each season, STG offers over 260+ education programs impacting over 56,000 students and community members from diverse ages and backgrounds. These programs deepen significance to performances through opportunities to engage with artists, inspire youth and local artists through training and performance opportunities, and provide exposure to the arts through access initiatives.

Over the years, we’ve seen numerous ECP participants build upon the skills they’ve learned in our sessions to create successful and fulfilling careers. Below is a snapshot of past ECP participants who have done just that!

Multi-Grammy Award winning hip-hop artist Macklemore participated in STG’s first ever More Music @ The Moore program in 2002.

Dancer Aaron Alexander participated in STG’s DANCE This program. He has choreographed and performed hip-hop in Los Angeles and Seattle, and in 2016, was cast in the Chicago production of Hamilton.

Former DANCE This participant Aaron Loux attended Juilliard before dancing with The Metropolitan Opera and Arc Dance Company. He has danced with Mark Morris Dance Group since 2010.

Pamela Yasutake, from Northwest Tap Connection, is also a DANCE This alum who performed with Savion Glover on the Paramount stage before making her Broadway debut in the 10-time Tony nominated musical Shuffle Along.

Seattle-based hip-hop artist and producer Otieno Terry is a former participant of STG’s More Music @ The Moore program. He was recently featured on Macklemore’s new album Gemini, opened for Macklemore at his Seattle concert last year, and has played Sasquatch! and Bumbershoot.

Seattle’s own ParisAlexa is a young songwriter on the rise and former More Music @ The Moore participant. She has since worked on her songwriting chops in STG’s Songwriters Lab and recently competed in NBC’s new songwriting TV show Songland.

The Paramount Theatre is lucky to house Wurlitzer opus 1819, one of only about 40 theatre organs still playing in their original venues. Built to allow a single musician to create a “symphony” of sound, this intricate instrument was installed for the Paramount’s grand opening in 1928 and has flourished well beyond its expected lifespan.

Volunteers from the Puget Sound Theatre Organ Society (PSTOS) have been maintaining this beautiful Publix 1 organ for the past 50 years, and also work closely with STG to provide educational opportunities involving the organ and the silent films it was invented to accompany. In recent years, PSTOS has been conducting an extensive restoration of the organ to repair inevitable deterioration that has occurred during the nearly 90 years it has been in the theatre. The most recent phase of this process has been restoration of the console (the organ’s operator interface) and installation of a new digital control system, as a result of which the organ doesn’t look or sound appreciably different; it just works much better.

We are extremely grateful to those who have made contributions to this restoration project, making it possible for present and future generations to experience the magic of our Mighty Wurlitzer. To make your donation to ensure the health of the Paramount’s historic instrument, please visit the PSTOS website at PSTOS.org.

As we look back in cinematic history on the importance of these three significant African American films, we also look to now and legendary filmmakers like Spike Lee, Ava DuVernay, Barry Jenkins and locally to LANGSTON’s Seattle Black Film Festival. The opening film is a rare surviving example of what the movie industry once labeled “race movies,” films with African American casts intended for African American audiences. The next two films are by Oscar Micheaux, who broke cinematic barriers as the first African American filmmaker, and made movies about the perils of racial inequality. He mobilized his actors to blur and destabilize the color line and operated independently of the Hollywood industry. Micheaux was a Pullman porter, farmer, homesteader, publisher, writer, director in the areas of Chicago, South Dakota and Sioux City, Iowa and traveled all over the country to distribute his films. We urge you to explore more found and restored films from Kino Lorber’s collection of Pioneers of African-American Cinema.

Vicky Lee, Curator of Silent Movie MondaysDirector of Education & Performance Programs, Seattle Theatre Group

ABOUT THE FILMS

October 7: SCAR OF SHAME (1927), directed by Frank Perugini, tells the story of when a young woman escapes from her abusive father and is rescued by an aspiring composer but encounters opposition from his class-conscious mother. The film, a collaboration between races, was produced by Colored Players Film Corporation out of Philadelphia.

Print source 35mm from the Library of Congress restoration in 2015.

Introduction and post-screening CineClub hosted by Andrea Stuart-Lehalle, Director for LANGSTON's Seattle Black Film Festival, and joined by Roger Guenveur Smith, acclaimed film star in many Spike Lee films.

October 14: BODY AND SOUL (1925) is written, produced and directed by Oscar Micheaux and stars Paul Robeson in his first film role.  He plays twin brothers, one a badly behaved minister and the other an ordinary working man, both vying for the affection of a young woman who is trying to abide by the misguided wishes of her devout mother.

Introduction and post-screening CineClub hosted by Zola Mumford, Curator for LANGSTON’S Seattle Black Film Festival.

October 21: WITHIN OUR GATES (1920) is written, produced and directed by Oscar Micheaux and is the earliest surviving feature film by an African American director. Micheaux made this groundbreaking film as a bold response to D.W. Griffith’s controversial film “Birth of a Nation.” The story involves an idealistic young woman who attempts to raise money for an elementary school to serve the Black community. The film touches upon themes that recur throughout the filmmaker’s career such as the promise of rural life vs. the corruptive influence of the city, and the use of religion as a means of misleading the Black community. The film is included in the Library of Congress National Film Registry as a significant film in the history of African American cinema.

THE MOORE THEATRE OCTOBER 9

Program Note by Christopher MyersThere is a stream of thinking in the West that associates “the beautiful” with, as Kant calls it, a “disinterested pleasure.” “Interested” pleasures like pornography and propaganda were contrasted with more noble pursuits, for example, the nude or classical dramas. This disinterest lays the foundations for high modernism, its formalisms, its universalist fallacies, the abstractions that purport to be thin as the canvases they are painted on, the movement vocabularies that pretend to come from the deepest recesses of the human soul, the radical borrowings that see all forms as somehow “neutral.”

Though several generations of artists and thinkers have made clear that there is no such thing as “disinterested pleasure,” for a certain era of makers who lived on the cusp of the transition from high modernism to the hydra of forms that have followed, they discovered in the double-speak of modernist ‘universalities’ a certain liberation. Robert Mapplethorpe was one such artist who photographed bodies, practices, and selves that were considered abject or taboo at the time but was able to do so with the assurance that his interest in these forms was “disinterested.” He said, about the work he showed in his 1986 solo exhibition “Black Males,” “I’m photographing them as form, in the same way I’m reading the flowers.” Mapplethorpe’s work, its beauty and its controversies, its legal challenges, most notably the obscenity trial in Cincinnati surrounding the exhibit, “The Perfect Moment,” all spun on the question of this “disinterested” beauty. Were these photographs pornography or were they nudes?

But what are we to make of the work in our current moment of understanding, that there are no disinterested pleasures, that the white marble figures that Mapplethorpe referenced so cleanly in his photographs were originally splashed with vibrant color, that the valorization of Greco-Roman bronzes or nearly grain-less black and white photography is as culturally specific as saying that the only real music was written by Beethoven. Artists like Glenn Ligon, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, and less directly, Catherine Opie, have addressed some of the complications of Mapplethorpe’s oeuvre. Essex Hemphill, Mapplethorpe’s contemporary, who along with Marlon Riggs delineated a set of

African American gay sensibilities provides an alternative way of viewing some of the same bodies Mapplethorpe depicts, and forms one cornerstone of the present oratorio, Triptych (Eyes of One on Another).  But still the question lingers: How do we as contemporary viewers acknowledge and embrace all of the ways, all of the vantage points, from which we can see this work?

In Triptych (Eyes of One on Another), Bryce Dessner and korde arrington tuttle, in collaboration with Kaneza Schaal, Roomful of Teeth, producer ArKtype, and with texts from Essex Hemphill, Patti Smith, and the Cincinnati obscenity trial, rethink Mapplethorpe’s work as not only an intersection of the photographer’s interests and multiple positionalities, but also to imagine the work itself as a locus around which various communities find themselves both included and alienated by the work itself, often at the same time.

The work and its collaborators, who bring to bear performance languages as diverse as Tuvan throat singing techniques, pop, folk,

film, and experimental music, 80’s downtown performance, Ailey and classical ballet, inhabit the space between the photographic work and its audiences. Much like the fable of The Blind Men and the Elephant, they cobble together a landscape of viewerships. The artists ask questions of the work and of themselves within the work.

Is it possible to imagine these men who are photographed with the impersonal intimacy of flowers, or bronze sculptures, as full human beings, with desires and pleasures of their own? Can we read the desire of the photographer, his conflicts and self-denials, in his steadfast commitment to a classical language that recasts leather daddies and daddy’s boys into upper-middle class living room fantasies? Where in this thorny bramble of gazes, objectification, outrage and intimacy do our own wants and expectations as an audience live?

When Martell Ruffin, the classically trained dancer who functions as a kind of ghost of both Mapplethorpe’s subjects and invisible audiences, enters he literalizes the sense of multiple viewerships and makes us aware that as we take in this work and Mapplethorpe’s work there are and will be other eyes, other ways of engaging with these bodies, these sounds, these hearts. Beauty is never “disinterested;” it is made of a thousand overlapping interests and wants and cares.  - Christopher Myers

Mrs. Krishnan’s Party Justin’s NotesEveryone loves a good party; endless laughter, catching up with friends, dancing on tables. But what if you don’t know anyone and feel self-conscious about your dancing? What if you’re not feeling a box of birds? Do you stay home or fake it till you make it? How do you set yourself free? Onam is such a great celebration because it shows there is more to happiness than just a smile, that to know joy you must also feel sorrow, without death there can be no rebirth. Maybe a party can change your life; you may meet someone who gives you the courage to set yourself free or shows you the resilience required to be truly happy. Thanks for coming out tonight. Justin Lewis

Jacob’s NotesFor the uninitiated Krishnan’s Dairy was the name of our very first play. A love story set in a corner shop, the power of which caught everyone by surprise – including us. That shop has kept its doors open for 20 years, touring the length and breadth of New Zealand and throughout the world, becoming as loved and cherished as a child. The story you’re taking part in tonight is somewhat of a sequel, but don’t worry, you don’t have to have seen Krishnan’s Dairy to enjoy the party. All you need is here, in the strangers that surround you and the imagination that abounds within, and the wonder of what’s going to happen next. That moment of not knowing, of being lost and confused, excited and a little scared is really what tonight is about: change. Something has to die in order for something to be renewed. It’s a tough lesson but a constant, existing at every stage of life and extremely present for us in a world that seems to be spinning ever faster. Rather than bemoan how hard it is to get to grips with all this shifting sand we want to celebrate the new castles we will build from it. Party on! Jacob Rajan

Indian Ink Theatre CompanyThe artistic partnership of Jacob Rajan and Justin Lewis is now comfortably in its second decade. They aim to leave an indelible imprint on your heart; that’s why they’re called Indian Ink.

THE PARAMOUNT THEATRE NOVEMBER 16 & 17

The Hip Hop Nutcracker, a contemporary dance spectacle set to Tchaikovsky’s timeless music, returns to The Paramount for two performances this holiday season!

Directed and choreographed by the Lucille Lortel and Bessie Award-nominated Jennifer Weber, The Hip Hop Nutcracker is an evening-length production performed by a supercharged cast of a dozen all-star dancers, a DJ, a violinist, and MC Kurtis Blow, one of hip hop’s founding fathers, who opens the show with a short set. The show is produced by the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) with three-time Tony Award-winning Executive Producer, Eva Price, and co-commissioned by the United Palace of Cultural Arts.

The Hip Hop Nutcracker THE PARAMOUNT THEATRE NOVEMBER 16 & 17(CONTINUED)

"We're thrilled to be back once again, bringing our show to new audiences as well as to those who have made The Hip Hop Nutcracker a holiday tradition," said NJPAC Producer David Rodriguez.

Just like the original, in The Hip Hop Nutcracker, Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince go on a dream adventure battling a gang of mice, visiting the land of sweets and learning the lessons of the holiday season. Innovative digital graffiti and visuals transform the landscape of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s beloved story from traditional 19th Century Germany to the vibrant, diverse sights and sounds of contemporary New York City.

Each evening will kick off with a brief live set by hip-hop legend Kurtis Blow. Blow was 20 in 1979, when he became the first rapper to be signed by a major label. Mercury released

“Christmas Rappin’,” and it sold more than 400,000 copies, becoming an annual classic. Its gold follow-up, The Breaks, helped ignite an international “Rap Attack.” He released 10 albums in over 11 years: his full-length debut, Kurtis Blow; his second, Deuce, a Top 50 Pop album and a big hit across Europe; Party Time featuring a pioneering fusion of rap and gogo; and Ego Trip, including the hits “8 Million Stories,” “AJ” and “Basketball.” In 1985 he released America, featuring “If I Ruled the World,” a Top 5 hit on Billboard’s R&B chart; Columbia/Sony recording artist Nas debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Pop Album chart with a cover of the song in 1997.

In addition to live performances throughout the country, this year PBS has exclusively partnered with the production to air ALL ARTS Presents The Hip Hop Nutcracker at NJPAC on the ALL ARTS broadcast and

streaming channels starting Friday, September 27 at 8 p.m. The full program will air this fall and winter on local PBS broadcast stations throughout the country and nationwide through the free ALL ARTS streaming app and on allarts.org.

"This year, not only will audiences experience the magic of The Hip Hop Nutcracker live, but they'll be able to re-live the magic in their own homes as well, through our partnership with PBS,” Rodriguez said.

Through this re-mixed and re-imagined version of the classic, the dynamic performers of The Hip Hop Nutcracker take us on a journey that celebrates love, community and the magic of the holiday season!

Dear STG Supporter,

I am the mother of a 9-year-old son with Down syndrome. Watching musicals, plays, and dance performances is something that our family values. However, knowing that my son may not be able to sit through entire performances, or that noises made by my son would make us feel pressured to leave, I’ve been hesitant to spend upwards of $100 on a Broadway ticket. Last winter, I heard that STG was presenting a senso-ry-friendly matinee performance of THE LION KING and that the tickets were underwritten by generous donors to the affordable prices of $15, $30, and $50! I immediately purchased tickets.

On the day of the performance, we arrived at The Paramount Theatre with great anticipation and many reservations. I quickly learned that STG thought of EVERYTHING to make this show comfortable for families like ours: reduced sound, family restrooms, noise-cancelling headphones, fidget toys, activity zones, and a leniency to allow food, talking, and movement at seats. All was going well for my son and I felt like my bases were covered. Then, we went to take our balcony-level seats and as soon as we walked into the auditorium he stopped and said, “No.” I convinced him to go see our seats, but he said, “Too high.” I had no idea that seat location would be an issue! I shared our predicament with a volunteer and within five minutes we were moved to floor-level seats. I was shocked and delighted.

The opening scene started with the animals walking down the aisle and my son’s face lit up with delight! It was at that moment that I started crying. I was crying because attending a show like this with my son was something that I thought would not happen for many years, if at all.

I am writing this letter to express to you that these kinds of experiences are necessary, deeply appreciated, and only possible with our community’s support. I hope you’ll read my story and want to bring the magic of live theatre to everyone diagnosed with Down syndrome, autism, and other sensory sensitivities. With your support, STG will be able to present another sensory-friendly performance of a Broadway hit musical – Disney’s FROZEN – on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at the Paramount Theatre. Please consider making a donation today to give community members like my son and me the ability to create amazing memories. I promise you, every family in the theatre that day will have their own story like mine.

Sincerely,

Rebecca WintersMother and STG Patron

As the steward of three historic theatres, STG places great emphasis on protecting the rich history of the Paramount, Moore and Neptune Theatres and the countless, diverse performances that have taken place on their stages. Because of this, STG created the Seattle Theatre Group Historic Theatres Library. Located on the fourth floor of the Paramount Theatre Office Tower adjacent to the theatre, the STG Historic Theaters Library is free and open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 3pm, as well as during all public and student tours of the Paramount.

The Library first opened its doors to the public on March 1, 2012, though the project began early in December 2010. It required the gathering, sorting, documenting, cataloging, and preserving of over 100 years of historical data. With tens of thousands of volunteer hours to date, this continues to be an on-going project.

The objective of STG’s Historic Theatres Library is three-fold:• To ensure historical material that exists of the three theatres is properly preserved and documented for future

generations.• To provide an educational environment for youth that would offer an opportunity to learn and experience the

remarkable history of the three theatres.• To offer the community a setting in which to become better acquainted with the history and thereby develop a

deeper understanding of three of the few remaining historic theatres in Seattle.

Managed by our long-term volunteers, The Thrashers, and aided by several other dedicated volunteers, the library’s collection includes: materials about the performers that graced the stages over the many decades, documents depicting the peaks and valleys that these theatres had to endure, information on the visionaries responsible for these theatres, priceless memorabilia, and countless signed posters, among other historical resources.

The collection’s contents are searchable by and accessible to everyone, both at the library location in the Paramount building and on STG’s website. For more information about the Library and its services, please visit stgpresents.org/library.
