And why has it taken so long for this to happen, for us even to realise there was a gaping hole there crying out to be filled?....................................................................... Because our job is all about focussing on others, on everyone else involved in the show, we rarely think of ourselves or reflect on our profession, our development. That, though, is exactly what a conference is for and about - it's a space, taken out of the 'normal' work treadmill, free of the usual 'to do' lists; and surely we need that as much as anyone else in order to a) stay sane! b) develop, both as individuals and as professionals.……………………………………………………………………………….. We plan to begin the scheme during the ABTT Theatre Show in June 2012. Mentors and mentees will meet for the first time, coming together in a joint session about what it is like to be a

professional stage manager in the 21st century. From there on there will be a Facebook group and

many other networking opportunities

WHAT WILL BE COVERED?

What is social media? How can I use it to be a more efficient stage manager? Covering basic concepts, for some it will be a way to assess your knowledge competency and for others a way to start exploring social media from the ground up. Focus will be on mobile technology. There will be a practical element, keep your mobiles to hand. Social media is far more than Facebook and Twitter.

Are you at the point of thinking what you might do after Stage Management? There is life afterwards! Lots of people leave stage management for a variety of reasons. Come and look at options with two stage managers who took a slightly different fork in the road. You have lots of different skills so let’s discuss what you can do with them!

Complex shows throw up complex challenges, not the least where a DSM starts with creating the book... Sequences of hundreds of cues need to be recorded quickly, accurately and neatly enough to be called from night after night. In this session we explore the techniques used by two established DSMs, share tips and look at examples of complex books from the worlds of opera and musicals.

The TMA/BECTU Code of Conduct for Get-ins, Fit-ups and Get-outs has now been operational for almost two years. Last year a session at PLASA found that whilst venues were making inroads into adopting the code and adjusting staff working patterns, the company stage managers of those visiting companies were often still unaware of the Code and its requirements. This session looks at the provisions of the code, what they mean for stage managers and also, for those who have used it already, seeks to provide feed-back to TMA and BECTU of what is or isn't working.

Despite email and online applications, your CV is still a vital tool for securing an interview and putting your professional life in a good light. Rebecca Emery of GSA and John Caswell, until recently stage manager on Billy Elliott, share some of their insights into CV do's and don'ts. And their tips for that winning covering letter!

Beverley Klein is an actress and singer whose many theatre credits include leading roles in Fiddler on the Roof at the Savoy Theatre, Into the Woods at the Linbury ROH, Sweeney Todd for Opera North, Candide for ENO and several productions at the NT including Candide, Romeo and Juliet and Summerfolk. She can be heard on several recordings as part of the original Les Miserables company, as well as on other production recordings.

Steve Edis is a composer, arranger and musical director for Film, TV and Theatre. Theatre credits as composer and/or arranger include the National, RSC, Old Vic, West End, Chichester and Regent's Park. Most recently he composed music for The Lion in Winter at the Theatre Royal Haymarket and is currently arranging a new musical, Chaplin, for the Guildhall. He has been composer/musical supervisor for the famous Hackney Empire pantomimes since 1998 and is a frequent guest pianist for the Comedy Store Players.

Vikki Heywood was appointed as Executive Director of the RSC in 2003. She is a Governor of the Company and a member of its Board. The company has a turnover of approximately £35 million per year, employs 700 staff and produces around 20 productions a year from its home in Stratford-upon-Avon. The RSC regularly performs in London and Newcastle-upon-Tyne and tours the UK and abroad.. …………………………………………………….

The company has recently undertaken a project to redevelop its Royal Shakespeare and Swan theatres in Stratford-upon-Avon as part of a £112.8m Transformation project. The award winning theatres re-opened in November 2010, having closed in 2007. The project was completed on time and on budget, with performances in Stratford-upon-Avon throughout the Transformation staged at the RSC’s temporary Courtyard Theatre. ………………………………………..

Prior to her appointment at the RSC, Vikki was Joint Chief Executive of the Royal Court Theatre, the country's foremost theatre for the development of new writing. During that time she was responsible for overseeing the £20m redevelopment of that theatre and the production of over 100 world premiere productions in London and on Broadway. ……………………………………….

She is a Board member of the Society of London Theatre, The London 2012 Cultural Olympiad and the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership, and a member of Warwick University Council and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. In October 2007 she received the Vitalise Midlands Woman of Achievement Award. During her career, she has led a wide range of theatre companies, having trained as a stage manager before moving into theatre management. She has advised the Arts Council and other stakeholders and arts boards and has been Vice Chairman of both the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith and The Young Vic Theatre.

AK Bennett-Hunter has over forty years experience as a stage manager, production manager, general manager and producer. He has worked in the West End and in the funded sector including the National Theatre, English National Opera and Opera North. For six years he was Administrative Director of the Theatre Royal Stratford East. He has been Executive Producer for productions at Strindberg’s Intima Teater and the Royal Dramaten Elverket Theatre in Stockholm and has contributed to management training courses in Finland and South Korea. As a technical management consultant, his clients have included the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and London's South Bank Centre. He has been writing for The Stage for thirty years and is Series Editor of The Stage e-book career guides 'Working Backstage', co-editor of Backstage Focus and editor of the Association of British Theatre Technician's journal, Sightline. President of the Theatrical Management Association (1995-1998). Ken is currently Deputy Chair of Trustees of English Touring Theatre and Chair of Skillscene.

Jamie Byron trained in Stage Management at Central School of Speech and Drama in London, graduating in 1989. He has worked extensively in theatre as a freelance stage manager, initially on tour and in regional theatre before moving to London where he worked with various companies including many productions with Shared Experience Theatre on national & international tours of productions such as Mill on the Floss to USA and China. He also worked in stage management positions on several West End shows, including Joseph and Sunset Boulevard. Jamie then moved to Manchester where he was Stage Manager at the Royal Exchange working on a wide range of productions. Since 2005 Jamie has been Company Stage Manager with the Library Theatre Company in Manchester and has worked on over 45 productions to date including plays by Mamet, Friel, Dickens, Ibsen, Miller and other contemporary classics both at the Central Library and the Lowry Quays Theatre. He has also worked for Manchester Arts Education Initia-tive and most recently on a site specific production of Hard Times set in a mill.

Antonia began her career in 1988, training in Stage Management at RWCMD. After graduation she followed the conventional route of ASM, DSM and CSM, specialising in opera. After the birth of her son, Antonia took the slightly sidewise step into education and in 2000 became a permanent member of the SM staff at RWCMD. After beginning his career in regional theatre, Charles was Stage Manager then Company Manager for the RSC for a period of over 20 years, including taking shows to the US and on Broadway for the company. Since 2002 he has company managed a number of international tours, for Matthew Bourne and the National amongst others, and West End shows. He is currently Company Manager for War Horse at the New London Theatre.

James trained as a stage manager at Central School of Speech and Drama. His early work was in regional theatre followed by the RSC and as a touring Company Manager. Production Management at Farnham, Cambridge Theatre Company and the Royal Exchange, Manchester followed before he became Executive Director at Cambridge Theatre Company/Method & Madness in 1988 moving to Hampstead Theatre, in 1998 during the development of the new theatre. In 2004 he was appointed Chief Executive of the Theatre of Comedy Company/Shaftesbury Theatre. A member of SOLT and previously a TMA council member, he was a member of the TMA Industrial Relations Committee and is now on the SOLT Employment Strategy Committee. In 1998 he founded the audio description company Vocaleyes, and was its Chairman between 1999 and 2002. Currently, he is also a director of Inmidtown, the Business Improvement District for Holborn, Bloomsbury and St Giles.



Caron worked as a stage manager before retraining as a web designer. As she realised she was not a designer, social media emerged and slowly the realisation hit that being a stage manager was harder to escape than she first thought! Caron is now an event technician with an unhealthy knowledge of social media! From creating social networks for Arts Council England’s Amb:IT:ion programme and Pilot Theatre's Shift Happens conferences, live streaming interactive coverage for the Architects’ Journal and Audiences Europe, to Twitter 'conversation curation' (digital show calling). As a consultant, Caron provides the knowledge and training organisations need to make media connect and talk across the web in real time. In 2010 Caron, along with video blog-ger and brand advocate Phil Campbell set up FibreCa.mp an HD community web studio and 'on the ground' real time event. Caron is an elected member of Equity's Independent Theatre Arts Committee and has been an SMA Board Member. She is here at the SMA's first conference to explore the adoption and adaptation of social media amongst stage managers, share insights and perhaps pass on some useful stuff to develop a series of skills and training workshops tailored for professionals working in the industry to be offered to SMA Members later in 2012.

Jennie Parke Matheson is an independent consultant with over 30 years experience in the performing arts. Her career started in stage & production management, and progressed into arts administration. She then moved into corporate events, where she created and delivered high end public & private sector projects. Clients ranged from banks & consumer organi-sations to local & central government. Jennie returned to the subsidised sector to manage an independent jazz record label & artist’s agency, where she developed their education programme and set up a residency at Southbank Centre. Alongside her professional career, she spent 6 years as a volunteer with the Terrence Higgins Trust, creating and running health education workshops in schools and prisons. She retrained in energy & bodywork and now practises as a holistic therapist in North London.

Sharon studied Stage Management and Technical Theatre at LAMDA. The early part of her career was spent gaining experience touring the UK and working in Regional Rep, but Sharon soon realised that her interests lay in becoming a career DSM. She has spent most of the last 19 years opening new large scale musicals in the West End. Her West End credits as DSM include Jolson, Kat and the Kings, Annie, Lautrec, Secret Garden, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Mary Poppins & Oliver! Sharon has also worked for the RSC and spent 2 years as DSM at The National Theatre. Sharon is currently DSM on Ghost The Musical at the Piccadilly Theatre in London.

Born in West Sussex, he studied Stage Management at Guildford School of Acting, and, after graduating he joined the Palace Theatre (Southend) in 1995 where he was DSM until 1999. He joined Glyndebourne Festival Opera that summer before continuing this career 6 months later at the newly redeveloped Royal Opera House, starting as ASM before being promoted in 2005 to DSM, the position he currently holds. Amongst many others, he has called such productions as Don Carlo (Hytner), Anna Nicole, Il Trittico (Jones), Tannhauser (Albery) and Mitridate (Vick). As Stage Manager; Turandot, Don Pasquale, Katya Kabanova and Simon Boccanegra.

With a career spanning ten years and many shows Sharon has worked in all elements of stage management both in town and on tour, doing everything from studio productions at the Gate to a full scale site specific piece at the Old Vic Tunnels, calling anything from musicals and hip hop shows to Shakespeare and ballet. Drawing on her experience Sharon has worked at RADA, Mountview and ALRA, training and championing the next generation of stage management.

John Caswell Stage Manager

After graduating from Rose Bruford College in 1995 Rebecca went on to be the first resident ASM at Norwich Playhouse for its opening season. She then worked for Birmingham Rep, Derby Playhouse and the Watermill Theatre as ASM and DSM.

During her time as Company Stage Manager at the Watermill Theatre she was involved in many varied and exciting projects including sire-specific shows, community productions and TIE. The theatre was well known for its Actor Musician shows and it was the Tony-Award-winning production of Sweeney Todd in this genre that she toured around the UK before it transferred to the West End. With the Propeller Company, which originated at the Watermill, she has taken productions to New York and Barbados.

After 7 years in Newbury, new challenges beckoned and since 2007 she has been at Guildford School of Acting teaching Stage Management and Production Skills.

It was through the SMA’s Stage Managers for Managers scheme that she was approached to serve on the SMA Board. She has recently been appointed Chair which she considers to be a real honour.

John has worked in theatre for 25 years, 23 of those in stage management.

The majority of this has been in London’s West End and includes Cats, Sunset Boulevard, Oliver!, Jesus Christ Superstar, Showboat, West Side Story, Les Miserables, Jailhouse Rock, Billy Elliot, Mary Poppins, Zorro.

John is currently Stage Manager on Singing in the Rain. He also has experience in film and corporate events.



Barbara Eifler discovered the backstage world at university where her degree was in English and Drama. A boyfriend who was a stage manager with Orchard Theatre, a rural touring company in Devon, then opened her eyes to stage management as a career.

After training as a postgrad at the (now Royal) Welsh College of Music and Drama, Barbara worked for 10 years as a DSM, SM, CSM and PM in small-scale, TiE, rep, subsidised touring, middle- and large scale opera, and on various events.

Adding a diploma in arts management and four children to her portfolio meant stage management was no longer an option after 1996, so she was thrilled to be offered the chance to run the SMA in 1999.

Jonathan attended the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, graduating in 2005. He is currently Company Manager on the world premiere production of “Top Hat”, which following a successful tour last year opens in the West End this spring. He will be Stage Manager on the production in the West End.

Over the years Jonathan has worked on many tours in a variety of genres including: “My Fair Lady“ (Cameron Mackintosh Ltd), “Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker!” (ATG/New Adventures), “An Inspector Calls” (PW Productions), and Simon Callow’s “Shakespeare – The Man from Stratford” (ATG).

Jonathan is a Board Member of the SMA and has a particular interest in the Commercial Theatre Agreement and touring productions.

David Evans has recently been appointed as Head of Production for National Theatre Wales. Previously, he worked as a freelance Production Manager extensively in the UK and abroad.

International tours for Matthew Bourne include Swan Lake, The Car Man, Edward Scis-sorhands, and Play Without Words. He has also toured work for the Dance Consortium which produces UK tours of the best contemporary dance from around the world. Other work includes Priscilla Queen of the Desert (West End & planning North American pro-duction), and writing for The Stage, Cueline and Sightline on a wide range of subjects including touring and the environment.

Lucinda Harvey is Head of Employment Relations for The Society of London Theatre and Theatrical Management Association.

Lucinda has worked for SOLT and TMA previously – in employment relations and running the Access London Theatre project (which promotes assisted performances in theatre). Lucinda has also worked in theatre marketing / audience development, access (heading up VOCALeyes, the national audio-description company at its inception in 1999) and has worked in production in the subsidised and commercial sectors.
