HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE

CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embar-rassing problem for millions of people, but it can be espe-cially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teach-ers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features stu-dents from first through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about them-selves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stut-tering Foundation is avail-able free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

Finding ways to relax can improve life at home and at the offi ce. While it’s not often easy to fi nd time to slow down, especially for those men and women juggling the respon-sibilities of career and family, the following are some simple techniques that don’t take much time but can have a posi-tive impact on your day.

• Take some time out from multitasking. The ability to multi-task is a cherished commodity for parents and working pro-fessionals alike, but men and women can benefi t from peri-odic breaks from their everyday juggling acts. Something as simple as focusing on a single task for 30 minutes at a time, as opposed to checking emails while preparing dinner or working on a project while answering a client’s phone call, can help lower stress levels and have a lasting and calming eff ect on your nerves.

• Make time to meditate every day. Studies have shown that meditation can aff ect the circuitry in the brain, positioning it to more adequately respond to illness and stressful situa-tions. Meditation has the added benefi t of being a relaxing exercise, as meditation encourages people to sit with their feet on the fl oor with both eyes closed in a relaxing setting that is free of external distractions.

• Walk away from your desk and couch. It’s well documented that spending too much time sitting at a desk can have a negative impact on your health. In addition to elevating a person’s risk of heart disease and diabetes, sitting at a desk all day long has been linked to repetitive stress injuries, obe-sity and back pain, each of which can contribute to stress-ful living conditions that make it diffi cult to relax. Men and women should spend at least fi ve minutes each hour walk-ing, whether they are getting up from their desk at work or getting off the couch at home. Doing so takes little time, but it can help to relieve stress at work and at home and improve your overall health.

• Practice yoga. Yoga is another activity that can help men and women relax. Yoga involves a series of poses that helps stretch the muscles and aid their recovery from everyday aches and pains, including those that often result from stressful experiences or days at the offi ce.

(StatePoint) For the health conscious, there’s no such thing as a summer vacation from making good nutritional choices and getting plenty of exercise. But there’s no reason to let a healthy lifestyle become boring.

Here are three ways to let the summer season guide your rou-tine:

• Mix Up Movement: After months of indoor exercise, you may be ready for a change of scenery. And summer is the ideal time to take a break from the treadmill and incorporate diff erent types of movement and exercise into your lifestyle. So ditch the gym this weekend and head for greener pastures. From row boating to hiking, you’ll fi nd yourself activating diff erent muscles than you normally would by mixing things up.

• Eat In-Season Produce: Take advantage of the summer har-vest and plan meals around in-season produce. The USDA lists apples, beets, bell peppers, kiwifruit, carrots, garlic, peaches, okra and cherries, amongst many more fruits and vegetables that reach their peak in the summer months. These items are a chock full of vitamins and nutrients and taste their best in summer.

• Summer Sun: Beyond the Vitamin D factor, a study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology shows that sun-light may lower blood pressure, which could reduce one’s risk for heart attack and stroke. Some researchers now say the ben-efi ts of sunlight could outweigh cancer risks associated with exposure. Don’t forget to take the usual precautions, however. Wear sunglasses, sunscreen and a wide brimmed hat to pro-tect against harmful UV radiation.

THREE SUMMERY WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH

(NAPS)—Warm weather means not just an increase in outdoor activities but emergency room visits as well. By taking a few steps to prepare, you can protect yourself and your family for more fun in the sun.

Dr. Jamison Satterfi eld, a pediatrician for over 25 years, advises pulling to-gether a bag to bring on your outings to help avoid unnecessary hospital visits. Essential items that should not be overlooked or un-derestimated include:

First Aid Kit: If left un-treated, cuts and scrapes can get infected. Always keep on hand a topical sterilizer—tube of Neo-sporin—for a quick clean-up. Adhesive bandages, gauze, medical tape, alco-hol wipes and an ice pack may also come in handy. Check your kit regularly to replace used items and re-move expired products.

Sunblock: The rate of dead-ly melanoma skin cancer has almost tripled in the last 35 years despite all the warnings. Dr. Satter-fi eld recommends broad-spectrum sunscreens with an SPF of 30 or higher. Water-resistant sunscreens can be less eff ective so it’s best to avoid them unless you’re going swimming. In addition, sunscreen con-taining insect repellent has its SPF cut by more than 30 percent. “When it comes to sunscreen, apply more and do it more often,” added Dr. Satterfi eld. Sunscreen should be applied 30 min-utes prior to sun exposure and reapplied generously every two hours.

Over time, sunscreens lose eff ectiveness, changing in color or texture. At the

GUIDE TO WARM WEATHER COMFORT

AND SAFETY

expiration date or yearly, sunscreen should be dis-carded. Also note, over-the-counter pain relief medications and antihista-mines decrease the effi cacy of sunscreen. So do some prescription drugs includ-ing antibiotics as well as many acne treatments con-taining benzoyl peroxide.

Mosquito Repellent: Chances of contracting mosquito-borne illnesses are on the rise, especially for children and the elderly. A study by The New Eng-land Journal of Medicine found that bath oil, which some people use as a repel-lent, protects for less than 10 minutes. Other natural repellents such as eucalyp-tus oil, cactus juice, lemon-grass oil, juniper, or even peppermint or vanilla, are no better.

While DEET certainly works, Dr. Satterfi eld does not rec-ommend it for children under age 1. He does rec-ommend Thermacell Mos-quito Repellent products, including lanterns, hand-held repellers and back-yard torches, which are designed to create a 15x15-foot “bubble” of protection that biting pests cannot penetrate. These products use a repellent that mim-ics the natural insecticide found in chrysanthemums and are virtually odorless,

fl ameless and portable.

Emergency Car Kit: Keep on hand hand-wipes or sanitizer, bottles of water, and hearty snacks that can take the heat, such as dried fruits, nuts and granola bars, for a quick, protein-rich snack. Other emer-gency items can include a couple of fl ares, fl ashlight, hats, umbrella and blanket.

Dr. Satterfi eld said he also keeps a Thermacell repeller on hand for roadside use and picnics.

Jamison J. Satterfi eld, M.D., practices pediatric medi-cine in Charlotte, N.C., and has been included in the Charlotte magazine Top Doctor list for numerous years.

NOVENA PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con- ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Favor granted. G.M.
