    COLOR FOR RESIDENTIAL INTERIORS

LOUDONVILLE For most people, choosing paint colors can be overwhelming. Not only is it necessary to take the rooms furnishings into con-sideration, but paint finish, adjacent room color, sight lines, architecture and light sources all play an important role in making an informed choice. The talk combines both the science and art of proper color ap-plication and an exploration of the profound emotional, psychological and physi-ological effects that color has on all of us. Amy Krane, Ar-chitectural Color Consultant and founder of Amy Krane Color, is trained by the Inter-national Association of Color onsultant/Designers of North America and was selected as Best of HOUZZ 2014 + 2015, the home decorating website with over 25 million monthly users. She is a regular con-tributor on Upstater.com and was featured recently in Hudson Valley Magazine and Home Depots in-house magazine, InPaint. FOR KIDS GUIDE

CAPITAL DISTRICT The Joy-ful Noise was a contempo-rary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District region and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young people, led spiritually and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joy-ful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into

Christian Music Ministries. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfor-tunate passing of key mem-bers, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the recognition, that still, We are One. A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reuniting and catching up. The reunion will culminate with a bar-

beque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forever impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the par-ents and family members in the Saturday night service who supported each of us

during our JN years. During these early planning stages we are interested in help lo-cating former members, and identifying folks to assist on various committees that have been formed. Please visit the Facebook page for Christian Music Ministries if you are a former member and want to connect, or contact us at [email protected]

    CREATE ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES!

While it might be tempt-ing to lower mower blades when summer temperatures reach their hottest, it is pos-sible to cut grass too short. Homeowners who want to cut back on the time they spend mowing their lawns under the hot summer sun should avoid lowering their mower blades too low, as doing so can cause signifi -cant damage to the lawn.

Lawns that have been cut too low are less capable of surviving drought and are unlikely to thrive. When grass is cut too short, the stem tissue from the grass is exposed, and that expo-sure can lead to unsightly grass that turns yellow or brown. Grass that is cut too short also may suff er from weaker roots, which in turn makes the grass weaker and

less likely to grow in strong. In addition, weaker grass is more susceptible to weed growth, which can be both a nuisance and an eyesore. When mowing, homeown-ers should remove no more than one-third of the grass blade. Mowing at this height will promote strong roots and protect the grass when the weather gets especially hot in the summer.

Feng shui is the practice of arranging a home or offi ce environment so energy fl ows gently and smoothly through-out the building. Many home-owners adhere to elements of feng shui, the origins of which date back several thousand years, in an attempt to create a positive environment that is free of stress. The basis for

feng shui is that everything in a given environment has an energy known as chi. Propo-nents of feng shui believe chi not only fl ows through the body but also through the en-vironment. When a home en-vironment negatively aff ects this fl ow, believers in feng shui feel this can lead to health problems, fi nancial troubles

or domestic strife. This is why feng shui adherents do not al-low clutter to accumulate in their homes, as they feel clut-ter can stagnate energy fl ow. In addition, feng shui adher-ents avoid homes with long, dark hallways or poorly lit staircases, as they feel such ar-eas negatively aff ect the fl ow of energy in a home.

    DID YOU KNOW?

(MS) With home prices on the rise, fi nishing a base-ment is the latest trend in real estate. More and more homeowners are enjoying the perks of additional living space, a reduction in heating and cooling costs, a healthi-er home, and, if done right, a more desirable home when selling.

A fi nished basement can be used for virtually anything and may off er multipurpose spaces the entire family can enjoy. Common uses include additional storage or a me-dia room, craft room, guest suite, workshop, or gym. A little extra room can give a growing family space to breathe and provide conve-nience for everyday life.

An unfi nished basement can be a source of energy loss. By fi nishing your basement, you can expect to see savings on your heating and cooling

EXPAND DOWN-STAIRS TO MAXIMIZE SPACE AND ENERGY

    EFFICIENCY

costs. Industry experts rec-ommend fi nishing the space with the proper framing, in-sulation and vapor barrier to guarantee a cozy and invit-ing space. Insulation plays a key role in the comfort of your newly remodeled space and although its hidden within your walls, insulation will make sure your space stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Retailers suggest using a stone wool insulation, such as ROXUL. This recommendation is also fi re and water repellent and is resistant to mold, mildew, rot and bacterial growth making your space healthy and safe.

An added benefi t to ex-panding downstairs with a fi nished basement is the instant marketability. Many

buyers now demand a well-fi nished basement to give them extra space. Although you may not immediately recoup the fi nancial costs prior to selling, you will stand out among the rest.

Planting a vegetable gar-den can be a worthwhile endeavor for anyone who has an available patch of land. Gardens need not take up much space, and even apartment dwellers with-out yards can plant small gardens in containers they place on terraces or window boxes.

Although establishing a garden is easy enough, be-ginners may make a few mistakes along the way. Those who already have paved the garden way be-fore can o er novice gar-deners some worthwhile tips.

One of the rst decisions novice gardeners must make is which crops to grow. This will help deter-mine how much land you will need and which sup-plies or soil amendments will be necessary. Accord-ing to The Old Farmers Al-manac, a common error for beginners is planting too much and more than any-one could ever consume, so its best to start small and be proud of that small garden.

Plants such as peppers, squash and tomatoes pro-duce throughout the sea-

VEGGIE GARDEN TIPS FOR BEGINNERSson, so you may not need many plants to provide for your needs. Less proli c plants may require a greater investment to produce a similar yield.

Locate your garden in an area that gets adequate sun. Many vegetables need be-tween six and eight hours of sunlight per day. Without enough light, they will not bear as much and could be susceptible to insect infes-tation. Vegetables and fruit also need plenty of water because theyre not very drought-tolerant, so keep gardens close to a water source.

Another good tip is to locate the garden near the house or barbecue grill. This way you can easily harvest fresh produce and use it when cooking.

Soil preparation is also key. Till the soil and remove de-bris like rocks, sticks and hard clumps of dirt. Work with organic material, such as manure or compost. Ap-ply mulch after planting to help maintain moisture lev-els in the soil.

Plant the tallest crops at the rear of your garden bed.

Work forward with shorter crops. Try to leave a foot or more between planting rows.

Its easy to get a garden started and enjoy fresh food for many months to come.

A at roof is more prone to leakage than other roofs, so homeowners may need to routinely inspect their at roofs for any areas of water penetration. Another way to prevent leaks is to install gutter systems correctly. Gutters should not be hung completely level, but angled toward the roofs down-spouts and drains. This angle will better facilitate water ow.

    DID YOU KNOW?

DID YOU KNOW?Homeowners looking for a rustic or weathered look for their ooring often rely on terracotta tile, a durable and versatile material that many feel gives a home a warm and earthy feel. Ter-racotta tile comes in vari-ous nishes and has proven resistant to the growth of mold and bacteria. However, because it is very porous, ter-racotta tile absorbs moisture quickly, which means it must be sealed somewhat regu-larly to prevent cracking, discoloration and staining. It also must be sealed espe-cially well when installed in a kitchen, as terracotta oor tiles are susceptible to dam-age from acids, alcohol, oils, and vinegar. Installation of terracotta ooring is labor intensive and is therefore best left to professionals.

(MS) After a winter of hibernation, spring is the perfect time to consider re-modeling projects that will help keep your house cool in the coming summer months and reduce energy con-sumption.

An unfi nished basement is a source of energy loss in many homes. By simply fi n-ishing the space with wall and fl oor coverings, you will notice a diff erence on your energy bills. A remodeled basement off ers more than

additional storage and living space. It can provide room for a growing family or a space where you can retreat for some privacy.

Insulation is a key compo-nent in making your base-ment look and feel comfort-able, inviting and dry. For the best results, install a rigid board insulation like ROXUL ComfortBoard IS against the concrete foundation before you stud the wall. The board is mechanically fastened or adhered to the concrete foundation wall, preventing thermal bridging through the studs, off ering a higher R-value and better thermal performance. It will ensure your basement is not

a source of energy loss, but rather an inviting retreat all year round.

Dining outdoors when the weather is warm can make for a pleasant change of pace. While certain aspects of eating outside can be enticing, Mother Nature can sometimes complicate the experience. Wind is one challenge to dining outside, as diners may fi nd them-selves chasing paper nap-kins or airborne plastic cups

on windy afternoons or eve-nings. To safeguard against the wind, rely on reusable, heavy plastic items that are less likely to blow away in the wind. Also, keep table-cloths in place with a few

supplies. Use a grommet-making tool to punch holes into the tablecloth and at-tach plastic or metal grom-mets. Place the tablecloth on the table and slip a thin bungee cord fastener to a grommet on the underside of the table. Stretch the cord across to a grommet on the

PRAYER TO THEVIRGINOh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con-ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Favor granted.
