Artist BiosBrock R. Harris grew up playing high school football for the West Carrolton Pirates and building BMX bikes in his spare time. When the computer age hit, photo manipulation and digital art became a passion and he displayed his creations and competed in various art competitions online. Currently, he and his wife spend time getting shots of different aspects of their community. He was the 2018 winner of the BW Greenway People’s choice award for his photo Reclaimed by Nature taken at the Oakes Quarry.

Brandi Gifford Harris is a Kettering artist since birth where she resides with her husband Brock and their two daughters Destiny and Addison. A full-time nanny, she formed her art around children and family. Along with mostly candid shots of her day-to-day adventures with children, a 170-pound Great Dane named “Monty” and a pint-size pit named “Nikko”, she has also begun to compose a book of humor, life, and love in a style that resembles her favorite author and humorist, Erma Bombeck. Brandi wants everyone to see life through her eyes, life through a child’s eyes…to notice the small things again.

Raven Harris is a freshman and marching band member at Kettering Fairmont High School. She has had a passion for art since she was four years old and has attended art classes at Rosewood Arts Centre and taken lessons from Tiffany Clark. As a middle-school student, Raven had drawings hung for an exhibit at Fairmont HS and won an award in her age group at the Middletown Art Center. Raven continues to develop her art ability and aspires to become a tattoo artist in the future.

James M. Gifford has enjoyed photography since setting up a makeshift darkroom as a Boy Scout, developing black and white prints. He expanded his skills and took many photographs while a Dayton Police officer. Jim also worked in the darkroom and as a photographer for the Fairborn Daily Herald. His great love in photography is catching the unusual shot: a macro close-up of a bee on a flower; bikes at a university in England; and the majesty of nature. Jim is a retired WPAFB contractor and ordained Southern Baptist minister.

Connie S. Gifford started work for The Kettering Oakwood Times newspaper in 1983 and later newspapers at Brown Publishing Company. She first started watercolor classes at Rosewood Arts Centre in 2011 and now devotes most of her time to painting, studying, and developing as a watercolorist, winning many awards. She is an associate member of Ohio Watercolor Society and for the past four years has paintings juried into their yearly shows. She is a member of the Western Ohio Watercolor Society and Fairborn Art Association. Other interests are photography, hiking, biking and working with children.

Cemetery Symbols and RepresentationsHave you ever wandered through a cemetery and wondered about the meanings of the designs carved on old gravestones? Thousands of different religious and secular symbols and emblems have adorned tombstones through the ages, indicating attitudes towards death and the hereafter, membership in a fraternal or social organization, or an individual’s trade, occupation or even ethnic identity. While many of these tombstone symbols have fairly simple interpretations, it is not always easy to determine their meaning and significance. We were not present when these symbols were carved into the stone and can’t claim to know our ancestors’ intentions. They may have included a particular symbol for no other reason than because they thought it was pretty.04-20835-D Tu 1 – 2 p.m. December 17
