COURSEDESCRIPTION
Asabroadlyinterdisciplinarycourse,SPAN117aimsatprovidinganintroductiontothestudyofLatinAmericaandLatinos/asintheUnitesStates.Usingresourcesfromvariousperspectivesofthehumanitiesandsocialsciences,wewillfocusonselectissuesthatsigniicantlyimpacttheLatinAmericanregionandLatinos/asintheUSA.Throughthesevariousengagements,studentswillobtainagroundworkforfutureworkintheieldofLatinAmericanandLatino/aStudies.
ACADEMICLEVEL-NATUREOFTHECOURSE
ThiscourseisopentoallstudentsoftheCLA,beingofparticularinterest,althoughnot
limited,tothoseplanningtopursuetheLatinAmericanStudiesProgramMinor.Assuch,thiscourseaimstointroducestudentstotheieldofLatinAmericanandLatino/aStudies.ThecoursefollowsathematicorganizationwhichaimsatexposingstudentstothemultiplewaysinwhichthehumanitiesandsocialsciencesapproachthestudyofLatinAmericanandLatinos/as.Thus,studentswillgainawideunderstandingoftheseieldsaswellashavingtheopportunitytopursuemorefocusedstudiesinareasofpersonalinterest.
COURSERATIONAL
ThegeographicalregionofLatinAmericaincludesovertwentycountrieswhentheCaribbeanistakenintoaccount,thoughitisnotalwaysincluded.CountriesasdiverseasHaiti,Brazil,Mxico,andArgentina,amongothers,willthenbetheobjectofstudyinthiscourse.Avariedtopography,climatediversity,complexhistoriesaswellashavingtheparticularnational,economic,andpoliticalrealitiesofthisregionpresentsigniicantchallengesinunderstandingLatinAmerica.Furthermore,therichtapestryofethnic,racial,cultural,linguistic,religiouspatternsaswellasdiversemigrationpatternsmakethisregiononeofthemostexciting,rich,andnotoriouslycomplextostudy.Inordertoprovideabackgroundagainstwhichfuturestudyoftheregioncanbepursued,thiscoursespedagogicalaimistoprovidetheanalyticalandtheoreticaltoolsnecessaryforthestudyofLatinAmericanandtheLatino/adiaspora.Studentswillanalyzecategorieslikerace,gender,nation,revolution,amongotherfromvariousperspectives,includingbutnotlimitedtosociology,literature,andreligiousstudiestogainawideexposuretohowcategoriessuchastheonesmentionedabovecontributetotheunderstandingofLatinAmericanandLatino/arealities.

diplomatic,economic,andculturaltieswiththeUnitedStates.2.TheopportunitytoengageincriticalcomparativestudiescategoriesandidentitieslikeRace,Gender,andNation,thatopenspathsofquestioningtohowthesecategoriesandidentityfunctionathome,andabroad.3.KnowledgeofgeneralgeographyofLatinAmericaanditsimportanceforthe
historiographyoftheregion.4.CriticalrelectiononthevariousfactorsleadingtomigrationtotheUnitedStates,thepositiveandnegativeimpactofmigrationpatternsandprocesses,andtherealitiesofthediaspora.StudentsshouldbeawarethattheUnitedStatesisnottheonlycountrywithsigniicantLatinAmericanmigration.5.Anawarenessofthemultiplicityofhistories,ethnicities,racialidentities,religioustraditionsofLatin-AmericaandtheLatino/adiasporaintheUnitedStates.
COURSELEARNINGOUTCOMES
1.Studentwillbeableidentify,geographically,LatinAmericancountries.
2.StudentswillbeintroducedtoanalyticalframeworkstothinkcriticallyaboutLatinAmericanandLatinos/asintheUnitedStateswhichtheywillthenapplytotheirunderstandingoftheregion.3.Throughthevariouswritingprojects,studentswillbeabletoemploytheseanalyticaltoolsandframeworksanddevelopcriticalandfocusedassignments.4.Studentswillcontinuetodeveloppublicspeakingandgroupworkskillsastheyengageinagroupproject.5.Throughleadingasmallgroupdiscussionstudentswillgainfacilityasmoderatorsofintellectualexchange.6.Throughweeklyblogcontributions,studentswillpracticetheformulationofcriticalquestionsinresponsetoassignedreadings.
TEACHINGSTRATEGIES
Thecommunicationofthematerialofthiscoursewilltakevariousformsincludinglectures,smallsgroupdiscussions,classwidediscussion,andblogsamongstother.Throughtheseteachingstrategies,theinstructorandthestudentswillactivelyinvolvedinthelearningprocess.
