AcalltoactionfromEdwardJamesOlmosChairmanoftheBoard,LatinoLiteracyNow

Dear friends of Literacy,

Please join us in our work to reduce illiteracy, promote literary excellence and advance the cause of reading in the Latino Community. Without literacy a child will never:

• be able to read to their kids at night, • read and understand a contract, • obtain a job that pays much more than minimum wage (with few exceptions), • review help wanted ads, • help their children with their homework, • understand and complete their homework falling further behind, • vote or participate in our Democracy as a full partner.

Our organization is called Latino Literacy Now, a non-profit corporation 501(c)(3). Our cause is promoting reading as a means of improving lives, both professionally and person-ally. Our goal is improved literacy throughout the Latino community. Included in our goals are a variety of literacy initiatives including health literacy and environmental literacy. Our initial community outreach effort, the Latino book & family festival, was first held in 1997 at the Los angeles Convention Center. When we started our mission I made a five year commitment to help build the festival into one of the best and widely appreciated community events anywhere. Due to the ongoing success of the festival, and because so many cities are showing an active interest in holding these festivals, a few years ago I made a lifetime commitment to Latino Literacy Now, the Latino book & family festival, the International Latino book awards and all our literacy programs.

Our events are designed to give companies - large and small - direct access to Hispanic consumers by providing a noise-controlled, business friendly environment where they can promote brands, sample and sell products, improve corporate image and demonstrate new product innovations to the largest minority group in the United states today. It is a unique marketing platform that has a proven track record of results.

While Latino Literacy Now is a nonprofit organization, it is committed to seeing that the businesses that support the Latino community are supported by the Latino community. Your contributions and sponsorships are tax-deductible and appreciated.

I invite you to join our cause and help us reach our goal. Thanks and I hope to see you at a Latino Literacy Now event in the coming year.

sincerely,

Edward James OlmosLatino Literacy NowChairman of the board

Results“I’d like to thank everyone involved in putting together this year’s festival. I had a great time par-ticipating, and I am sure others around me did as well.” adriana dominguez, Literary Agent, Full Circle Literary, New York City. October 14, 2009, commenting on the 2009 Los Angeles Festival.

“A really neat family event. The food was good. The entertainment was great. We came home with a stack of books.” terri works, Librarian, City of Stockton, California.

“It was a great educational event, especially for the kids and it gave us a good opportunity to network and promote our business.” maria alanis, AAMA, Houston, Texas.

“The festival is one of the most important gatherings because it illustrates to American corporations that Latinos are not only a growing population but also a race that is finding ways to better itself by edu-cation and literacy.” ramiro Burr, author, quoted in the Los Angeles Times, August 29, 1999.

“The Festival is an outstanding one-of-a-kind event for Latinos. Great for lots of networking, and out-standing for writers and authors to meet main agents, distributors and publishers, who are proactively seeking to represent, guide and work with Latinos. It happened to me.” rafael Colón, author and presi-dent of Voices Internacional.

Chicago, Il • April 17-18 For the 12th annual Chicago Festival we will once again be holding a Spring Festival. Our

home for the sixth straight year will again be Unity School, in the Town of Cicero, one of the most densely Latino populated suburbs in the entire Chicago area. This venue has worked excep-tionally well for us

with an average attendance of 28,000 over the last four years. Continuing as co-host for the Chicago event is Tele Guia de Chicago. Look for lots of celebrities, authors, good food and, of course, large crowds.

Houston, texas • september 18-19 The Houston Latino Book & Family Festival has a long standing tradition of producing quality literary talent, an outstanding seminar and panel program and turning out large audiences of readers,

shoppers and friends of literacy. For 2010 we are happy to announce a new co-host partner-ship with the National

Hispanic Professional Organization (NHPO). NHPO brings a wealth of networking, event planning and organizational experi-

ence to the mix. Once again the George R. Brown Convention Center (GRB) will be our home. We will also be participating in the annual Fiesta Patrias parade that ends next to the GRB as we open our doors on Saturday.

los Angeles, CA • October 09-10 Thanks to the participation of over 70 Latino authors, the 2009 Los Angeles Festival was host to the most exceptional literary program in our 13 year history. Holding the Festival on Greenlee Plaza at California State University Los Angeles worked exceptionally well. We have finally found a new home for our Flagship event.

Once again we will be working with several University depart-ments, faculty and student groups to put on a well-organized fes-tival. As in 2009, emphasis will be placed on putting together an excellent literary program along with an extensive Food Court,

a cultural program including Folklorico dance competition, and a celebrity participation that makes the Los Angeles Festival unique.
