Balls at the Winter Palace, men in military uniform and glamorous women drinking champagne, BBC's adaptatiUK screens on Sunday with a bang.

And with story lines dominated by love, sex, battle and intrigue it is only fitting that the passionate six-episode sable to hold their own against the dramatic screen play.

Countless Eastern European locations were used for shooting, including palaces, museums and even a universheading to opulent and historic buildings bring the 1,300-page tome to life.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest novels of all time, War And Peace is a door stopper of a book at morfiction and covering universal themes of love and loss, repression and redemption.

It begins in 1805 during the reign of Tsar Alexander I and leads up to the 1812 invasion of Russia by NapoleonRussian history.

It tells the stories of two fictional grand aristocratic families – the bohemian, free-spending Rostovs and the hitheir circle of acquaintances as they socialise, quarrel and fall passionately in love.
