What is Mentoring?

Mentoring is an interactive learning and educational experience, between graduates and students, to assist students in their personal and career development.

Mentoring in the School of Languages Literatures and Cultural Studies

The mentors are graduates who have worked for a number of years and at the School’s request have agreed to share their experience and guidance.

The mentees are students of the School interested in learning from the mentor’s experiences and being advised, guided and informed by them.

How does the programme work? Students and graduate mentors are invited to attend the programme launch event on 9 October. Each graduate will introduce him or herself with a brief presentation. Students will also have the opportunity to speak with mentors one to one or in small group and to ask questions. At the end of the event students will be asked to fill out a mentor matching form and to indicate a first, second and third choice mentor. Students who wish to participate will be matched with a mentor for the programme. Depending on demand, 1-3 students will be matched to each mentor. Students and mentors should plan to meet approximately three times between October 2013-May 2014 or a total of 10 hours to maximise the benefit of the programme. Meeting space will be made available in College on one to two evenings every month to facilitate these meetings.

Topics of interest to mentees in the past include: Researching and exploring particular job roles and sectors Deciding on what to do after college Review a CV/LinkedIn profile

Practice job interviews, networking Introductions to other professional colleagues Finding jobs not advertised Exploring postgraduate study

Depending on demand, 1-3 mentees will be matched to each mentor. The mentors and mentees meet at least three times over one academic year. An approximate time commitment of 10 hours from October to May is suggested.

Key Programme Dates:

Mentor Matching Meetings: Tuesday 15 October 12:30-13:30 OR 13:00-13:30 and Thursday 17 October 12:30-13:00 OR 13:300-13:30 in the Global Room (attendance at one of the four meetings is mandatory for programme

participation).

Mid-way Event: Wednesday 28 January 2014, Neil Hoey Lecture Theatre. This event will be hosted with the School of Histories and Humanities GradLink

Programme. Attendance is optional but encouraged.

have been working with Bank of Ireland Finance Services for two years. I decided to re-train as a chartered accountant after spending a number of years working in communications for not-for-profit organisations and working as a French translator. After I graduated from European Studies, I spent some time abroad developing my language skills before deciding to do a Masters’ qualification in translation studies. The course I chose to study drew heavily on themes (politics, economics, management) I had studied during my year abroad.

University of Tours in France. I was subsequently employed on a contract basis by the university over the following 13 years. Upon completing my undergraduate degree in May 2012, I accepted the position of Planning Administrator for Volkswagen Group Ireland, supporting the Head of Planning and her department. In July 2013, I was promoted and assumed the role of Planning Executive with responsibility for production and sales planning for the brand.

2004. Having a degree in Business and German served as a great basis in order to be able to work and grow in a multinational company such as Volkswagen Bank and being able to use my German language skills on a daily basis was a massive advantage. Since my graduation I have also achieved the title Qualified Financial Advisor with the Institute of Bankers.

I have held various banking roles within VW Bank such as Senior Credit Underwriter, Treasury Dealer and Team Leader of the German Business Credit Team. In 2012 I spent the year in VW Bank Headquarters in Braunschweig on an International Professional Development Programme working in the Direct Banking Division.

Since April 2013 I have assumed the role of Head of German Business. I report directly to the General Manager in Ireland and the Managing Director of Volkswagen Bank direkt in Germany and am

responsible for the German Business Credit Team as well as Treasury Front Office, Planning and Controlling and must work very closely with the Sales and Marketing departments in order to achieve sales targets. The job role has a broad spectrum, which gives a great insight into many aspects of banking and means that no two days are the same.

received a scholarship to study at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris, where I spent two years. I joined Alcatel NV in Paris in several Human Resources roles for 8 years, finishing as Manager of Corporate Leadership Development. I then spent 5 years with General Electric, in Brussels & London, of which my final 3 were as Director of Leadership Development for GE Capital Europe. and French. In my JS year, I studied in École de Management Business School in Strasbourg, France. This second year in France really helped me to develop my language skills and give me the confidence to use my French in a working environment upon returning to Ireland. Claire spent 10 months working for the Irish Embassy in Singapore as part of the Farmeigh Fellowship programme. While in Singapore, she carried out a project for Enterprise Ireland which included market research in international education and the marketing of Irish universities abroad. Name: Mairéad Hughes Course: TSM French & Italian Job Title: Financial Analyst Employer: National Development Finance Agency Profile: Mairéad graduated with a BA (Hons) in French and

Italian in 1991. Following several years in Paris working for Europcar France, she returned to Ireland and began selling Ireland as a corporate tourism destination to the US and European markets working for Abbey Tours and then A Touch of Ireland, two of Ireland’s leading destination management companies. In 2000, Mairéad was hired by the National Treasury Management Agency, a public sector Agency where she was promoted to Senior Operations Manager of The State Claims Agency, an agency set up to centralise the management of personal injury and property damage claims against the State. In 2007, Mairead was recruited by the National Development Finance Agency, whose primary role is to advise State Authorities on the optimal means of financing priority public infrastructure projects. Mairéad currently works as a Financial Analyst, a role which includes advising State Authorities on the financial aspects and risk evaluation of Ireland's public-private partnership procurement projects. Mairéad has advised on over 25 projects, including Metro North, Housing Regeneration Projects, Waste Water Treatment Plants, National Broadband, Healthcare projects, and is currently advising on the proposed move of DIT colleges to Grangegorman. Mairéad completed an MBA in 2004. Areas of expertise include: Financial analysis, risk management, public procurement, business development, communications and report writing.

I travelled to schools in Connemara as a drama facilitator, teaching primary school students and preparing them for drama performances. -Branar Drámaíochta Teoranta (2010-2011): I worked with this educational theatre company, travelling all over Ireland to primary and secondary schools providing Irish drama workshops. -TG4 and Nemeton Productions (2011-present) I work as a Sports analyst on Peil na mBan and Seó Spóirt. I play Senior County football with the Galway ladies senior team and this has helped me immensely with this job as I am familiar with the players/managers from other counties. -Coláiste Mhuire, Ballygar (2012): I was a substitute teacher from January to June and after the substitution work, I decided that I would like to apply for the Professional Diploma in Education. I was accepted and began the course in NUIG this year. I am presently completing my teaching practice in Coláiste Mhuire.

worked in an educational publishing company which specialised in print and audio materials for language learning. After completing a Master’s in Communication and Cultural Studies at Dublin City University and undertaking research in Namibia on English courses for adult beginners, she set up her own company, Rockfinch Ltd. Through her company she works as an independent TV producer/director and radio producer, working on documentary programming, mainly on arts, educational and other

Name: Niamh Gallagher Course: European Studies Job Title: Co-founder Employer: Women for Election Profile: Niamh is co-founder of Women for Election with

Michelle O'Donnell Keating. With eight years experience in politics, policy and NGOs in Ireland, the UK and Brussels Niamh is delighted to be at home, putting the Women for Election vision into action. Before Women for Election Niamh worked as Research and Policy Analyst at the Children's Rights Alliance in Dublin. There, she was lead researcher and author of the Alliance annual Report Card to Government and represented the organisation at Social Partnership, the End Child Poverty Coalition and at Eurochild, the European level network of children's rights organisations, where she was Chair of the Policy Steering Group. Before that Niamh was a researcher at Demos, one of the UK's leading think tanks, where she co-authored a series of influential reports.

In her spare time, Niamh has been a Board member of We the Citizens and a member of the Independent Monitoring Board at Pentonville Prison in London. She is currently a member of the Advisory Council to European Movement Ireland. Niamh holds a Masters Degree in Politics from the London School of Economics, a BA in European Studies from Trinity College Dublin and is currently undertaking a part time Executive MBA at Smurfit Business School.

Ombudsman/Conflict Resolution Name: Paulyn Marrianan Quinn Course: General Studies (English, French, History) Job Title: Senior Counsel Employer: Former founding Ombudsman -Insurance - Military Profile: Founding Ombudsman for the Defence forces 2005 -

2012 Founding Insurance Ombudsman of Ireland 1992-1998 Senior Counsel.  In 2005, Paulyn was appointed by the President of Ireland as the founding Ombudsman for the Defence Forces. Her growing interest in human rights led to her work with the Geneva-based Centre for Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF) assisting in capacity-building for States addressing the issue of civilian oversight of Military administrative matters and human rights. She was also a member of the Expert Group convened by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Office of Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) to write the ‘Handbook on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of Armed Forces Personnel.’ This handbook has been translated into several languages including Russian and is a point of reference in the current debate about overseeing and monitoring Human Rights in the Armed Forces. Paulyn served for six years on the Board Audit Committee and the Executive Board of Trocaire – the Irish International Aid and Development Agency (2003-2009). She was an inaugural member of the Irish Financial Services Appeal Tribunal (IFSAT) – (2008- -).

Public Service

Name: Orlaith Fitzmaurice Course: Law & French Job Title: First Secretary Employer: Office of Foreign Affairs and Trade Profile: Following graduation, I joined Department of Foreign

Affairs as a diplomat and have served to date in two postings in France, as well as shorter assignments in

the USA and Switzerland. My Erasmus experience in Poitiers was of particular relevance when serving as Ireland's education and cultural attaché at our Embassy in Paris. I currently work in the North America unit of the Department and a TCD background is very useful in networking in the US in particular.

 

Publishing Name: Liz Hudson Course: TSM English & French Job Title: Owner Employer: Little Red Pen Profile: I completed a postgraduate diploma in printing and

publishing at the London College of Printing, then spent five years working in London publishing houses (Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins and Routledge). Since 2004 I have been a self-employed freelance editor and have rewritten, edited, proofread or typeset some 400 books of various lengths for a variety of clients, Irish and international.

Fab Day. In 3 years One Fab Day has grown to be one of the world’s leading wedding blogs, styled as an online magazine, publishing original content three times daily. One Fab Day is one of Ireland’s only online publishing companies, employing 7 full-time staff from headquarters on Dublin 2. As Managing Editor Naoise leads the editorial team, manages marketing efforts and the day-to-day operations of the company. Having worked in a variety of roles within the digital industry, as a mentor I would like to provide some insight into the diverse options available working within web technologies and online publishing. Also as an entrepreneur in a nascent industry, I have plenty to share with those looking to forge their own path or start their own company after graduation.

after graduating. I worked as Translator Grade 3 for two and half years. This position involved translation of legal documents and providing a simultaneous translation service to Members of the Houses of the Oireachtas and the Press. I worked as Translator Grade 2 for around four years. This position involved translation, editing and managerial duties. I have been working for almost three years as Assistant Chief Translator, which mainly involves editing, management and administration duties. I am responsible for the publication of legal documents.

In addition, I have taught classes in Early Irish and in legal translation on an occasional basis. I have consulted with other bodies in relation to targeted legal translation courses.

Germany where I worked for a German global supplier to the automotive industry. I was liaison for 16 subsidiaries worldwide and moved gradually into translation (technical). I returned to Ireland in 1997 and did the MA in Translation studies (German) at DCU, followed by a Dipl. in Legal Studies and a Doctorate (Translation Studies). I have been translating freelance (now almost exclusively legal) since 1997. I have taught on the MA in Translation Studies in DCU since 1999, am a former Chair of the ITIA, and am involved in projects at EU level.

translation experience and has been translating on a professional basis since 2008. Educated at Glenageary/Killiney National School and Newpark School, Blackrock, James read Early and Modern Irish at the University of Dublin, Trinity College, and subsequently completed a Postgraduate H.Dip. in Irish Language Translation Studies at NUI Galway. He has translated a vast array of documents, signs, websites, software and advertisements for private companies and public bodies alike, including the Revenue Commisioners, Samsung, Microsoft, the USI, the HSE, Etihad, the NCCA, an Garda Síochána, and Siemens. As well as his work in the Irish translation sector, James has also worked in web and graphic design sectors, and in Enterprise Systems and Technology Finance in AIB Group. In 2009, James developed MacLitriú, the only Irish Spelling Checker native to Mac OS X.

and then worked as a translator for a year with an Irish language promotions company in Galway city. I have also worked in arts administration in Punchbag Theatre Company and at the Western Writers’ Centre. I’ve worked as a bookseller and in a university library. I became a full-time writer in 2004. To date I have published one novel, four short story collections and four books of poetry. I also teach creative writing on a part-time basis, as well as mentoring novelists who are taking the BA in Writing at NUI Galway.
