This form collects the information necessary in order to issue 2009 stickers for existing pool members, who still have their Pool IDs, and to issue new Pool ID cards for new Mem-bers or replace lost Pool IDs of existing Members.

It is important that these forms be accurate and complete. The

Please join us on May 13th for a Triton Swim Team Registra-tion info night at the community center from 6:00-8:00. You will have a chance to meet the coaches, team reps, swim team vendors and some fellow swimmers and families. The team swimsuits will be on sale from Sports Fair as well as caps and goggles. As the Tritons start our fourth season, we invite all inter-ested to come and enjoy some refreshments and learn about a great way to enjoy your summer in 2009.

During the summer of 2008, the Laurel Hill Tritons, in our third year in the Northern Virginia Swim League, placed in second in Division 15 and were 1st place champions of the Divisional Relay Carnival. The league comprises some 104 teams and has been sup-porting over 15,000 young No. VA swimmers for over 50 years. Swimming is a great way to meet new friends, get some great exer-cise and learn to compete in a friendly, supportive environment. In our fourth year, we will be in Division 15 with 7 meets during our summer season. Swim meets are on Saturday mornings; devel-opmental meets on Monday eve-nings, with one special Wednes-day Relay Meet. Our season prac-tice begins on May 27th and ends on July 25th with our team party.

Our practices start on May 27th in the afternoons after school. Practice times will be divided by age group with older swimmers (12-16 years) swimming 4:00-4:45 and younger swimmers (8-12 years) swimming from 4:45-5:30 in

the evening. Once school ends, we will begin morning practices.

We will also have separate ses-sions for our youngest swimmers, “Little Tritons” (ages 4-7) on Mon-day, Wednesday, and Friday. Our Little Tritons will have special

races throughout the season. We can only accept the first 25 Lit-tle Tritons that register. Please watch for announce-

ments for these practice ses-sions.

Please contact Tom Gemma, [email protected] for more informa-tion.

Elementary School Update By Christine Morin

The elementary school boundary study is finally over our community elementary school has been created! The new boundary will include the entire Laurel Hill HOA and all other nearby communities along Silverbrook Road, from Monacan Road down to Lorton Road. The Lorton Station South community will also be attending the new school; this community is primarily the new neighborhoods that are lo-cated past Shoppers Food Ware-house and Glory Days. The bound-ary creates a conservative and re-sponsible approach to prevent over-crowding the new school and allow-ing for future growth and possible programs. We can all be thankful to our school board members, Mr. Dan Storck and Mrs. Liz Bradsher ([email protected], [email protected]) for the enormous amount of time and effort they took to create six community schools, for getting the school built two years ahead of time, and finally for all their help to get approval and funding to build South County Mid-dle School! Please take a moment and email them with your thanks.

Several community members went to visit the new elementary school principal, Mrs. Suzie Mont-gomery earlier this month and welcomed her to the neighbor-hood. Thank you to everyone who came, brought goodies, water, and a handmade card from several neighborhood children. Mrs. Montgomery’s trailer is currently located in the South County Sec-ondary parking lot. She is very busy interviewing and hiring teachers, ordering school equip-ment and supplies, and getting everything ready to move into the new school. Building construction continues to be ahead of schedule and Mrs. Montgomery is optimis-tic and she might be able to move into the school in the May/June timeframe. Mrs. Montgomery will be looking for a lot of volunteers this summer to help move in furniture, stamp and file books, and help get the school ready to open in Septem-ber. We will be sending out calls for help this summer via the Ya-hoo group, so if you are not on the community Yahoo group, please sign up so you can stay informed.

Don’t forget the upcoming community meeting for sug-gesting names for the new ele-mentary school on Monday, March 2 at 7 p.m. at the South County Secondary audito-rium. Please bring your kids….this is going to be their school!

Hi It’s Me Again, Your Neighbor

Hi,

It’s me your neighbor again. Well it’s February, it’s dark, dreary, no golf, the Redskins did not make the play-offs, and the only good thing, so far we have had only one day of snow. Our home is warm, the TV works so what more can I ask for.

Reflecting on the past holidays, it was a great family time, but our kitchen during meal preparation was transformed into a stage. Several years ago I decided that cooking for 12 to 14 people was too large a task for my wife (I’m not

allowed to help except to mash the potatoes). In order to solve this problem I assigned each one of the family members a task. Carl to bake one turkey and to deep fry another, Gene to bake the pies and cheesecakes, our daughter-in-law Chris to make the vegetables, our niece the salad, my wife to do the dressing, and of course me to mash the potatoes and select the wine.

We have done this for the past several years, but when the time comes to put this annual master-piece together, that is when our kitchen transforms itself into a stage. With only two ovens, one

microwave, a four-burner stove, and three refrigerators, and at least 500 sq. feet of kitchen space, there is not enough equipment or room for 4 or 5 cooks in the kitchen. Didn’t someone once say something about how many cooks there should be in the kitchen? That’s when the great ballet be-gins as each specialty cooks moves for position, time, equipment, and space. At times I think I saw a few elbows aiding a cook getting into position. All the while that this act is being conducted, my wife, who is above it all, is acting as the conductor of this ballet. She urged one cook to hurry, an-other to use a certain oven, and another to add more salt. Unbe-lievably at the appointed time all is ready. The last event is to carve the turkey. Carl, who at times thinks he is the Emeril of the north, labors over the birds and each year is frustrated by the fact that the knives are not long enough or sharp enough. Some-how the turkey gets carved and we move from the “National Thea-ter” to the dinning room for an-other wonderful family holiday dinner.

Our home here at Laurel Hill is large enough, except for the kitchen, for this annual affair to house and entertain the 12 to 14 dinner guests. Judging by the amount of cars parked on our streets, I am sure many of our neighbors also enjoyed their fami-lies during the past holiday ses-sion. I hope that you & your fami-lies were able to share the warmth and closeness of your families at holiday time this year and I hope next year as well.

Thanks for listening,,

Bill Brown

P.S. Carl bought his mother a new expensive set of carving knives for Christmas.

JOIN US FOR TRASH BASH 2009!! UPDATE

With spring just around the cor-ner now is a good time for us to spruce up Laurel Hill. I know that there was neighborhood clean-up a couple of years ago, and now that we have our neighborhood watch program up and running, I would like to in-stitute the Laurel Hill Trash Bash each year as a part of this program.

In order to keep our community safe, it is important to keep it clean. You’ve all heard of the “broken window” theory. If you let a neighborhood get run down, crime will soon follow. When I attend the meetings the police department has for neighborhood watch coordinators, I keep hear-ing how important it is for us to keep our neighborhood well

maintained in order to deter crimi-nals from visiting our area.

I have scheduled this years Trash Bash 2009 for Saturday, March 21, 2009 from 9:00 am to 12:00pm. Please stop by the Laurel Hill club-house at 9:00am sharp where we will assign work crews. Remember to wear boots or shoes that you won’t mind getting a bit dirty and bring gloves if you own a pair. I will provide large trash bags and disposable gloves for people who need them. I will also provide re-freshments for all those who help.

If you are a member of a boy or girl scout troop in the area, please consider making Trash Bash 2009 a community service project for your entire troop. High school students needing community service hours are

welcome to participate as well. Just remember to bring your forms with our so I can sign them when you are finished working. The rain date will Saturday, March 28, 2009.

If we all work together for just a few hours we can probably get most of the trash picked up, and together we will continue to make Laurel Hill a beautiful and safe place to live, and a community we can all be proud of!

Feel free to contact me at [email protected] or call me at 703-690-7429 if you have questions about Trash Bash 2009 or the neighbor-hood watch program. We are always looking for new members to help pa-trol.
