Sixth Season | Penn State ‘88Head Coach Anna Marie Vesco guided Drexel to a school-record tying 12 victories in 2007,including three in the Colonial Athletic Association. Drexel's 3-4 mark in conference action was thebest the Dragons have posted since joining the CAA in 2002. Drexel went 9-1 in non-conferenceplay as Coach Vesco is now 46-3 in action outside of the CAA in her five seasons as head coach atDrexel. The Dragons established themselves as a tough team to beat at Vidas Field as Drexel went9-1 at home with the Dragons' only loss coming to No. 7 James Madison. Vesco narrowly missedtaking Drexel to the conference tournament as the Dragons were just one game out of the finaltournament berth. Nearly adding to the three wins, Drexel dropped an overtime game at Hofstra, the eventual conference champion, and lost at Old Dominion by just two goals.

Vesco was instrumental in the success of 2007 First Team All-CAA selections Kerry Kelly andLauren LaBella and three-time all-conference player Emily Hoesch. Kelly and Hoesch rewrote theDrexel record book as the two own the single-season and career records for goals, assists andpoints. The Drexel head coach has also been influential in the development of goalie LaurenLaBella, who ranked fourth in the nation in goals against average and save percentage in just hersecond collegiate season.

With last year's 12-5 finish, Vesco now has a 54-30 career record at Drexel. Her 54 wins and .643winning percentage rank first among all Drexel women's lacrosse coaches since the Dragons entered Division I competition in 1983.

In just her second season, Vesco guided the Dragons to a best-ever 5-0 start en route to an overall record of 10-7 for the 2004 season. The 10 wins were the most since the 1993 season. Drexel was ranked ninth in draw controls and 20th in scoring margin nationally.

Vesco's first season included wins over city rivals Saint Joseph's and La Salle. The Dragons were 8-8 overall during the 2003 campaign, their best showing since the 1992-93 season, when they went 12-3.

Vesco has quickly established herself as one of the top coaches in women's college lacrosse. Vesco spent nine seasons as head coach atRutgers University, where she compiled an 82-64 career record. Honored in 1998 as the Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year, Vescoenjoyed many successes while with the Scarlet Knights. Her 1999 team finished the season with a 14-3 record, the most wins in schoolhistory, and became the first to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. The team earned a national ranking of 11th and had four playersnamed to the Mid-Atlantic Regional All-America team. The 1997 and 1998 squads finished 13-5 and 12-5, respectively, with both earningtrips to the Eastern College Athletic Conference tournament. In her career, Vesco has had 13 of her players named to All-America teamsand has coached six Academic All-Americans.

Prior to her tenure at Rutgers, Vesco served as the girls' lacrosse coach at Chatham High School, where she recorded a 6-4-2 mark. Shewas also an assistant coach at her alma mater, Montville High School. During her two years coaching at Montville, the squad posted a33-1-2 record, captured two Tri-County Conference championships and had two appearances in the semifinals of the New Jersey StateTournament. Vesco coached in Japan in 1991-1992 and was the head coach of the North Jersey Lacrosse Club from 1990-1997.

A 1988 graduate of Penn State University, Vesco earned a degree in hotel, restaurant and institutional management. She was a two-timeAll-American and a four-year letterwinner on the women's lacrosse team. She played in three Final Fours and was a member of the 1987National Championship team. Drexel Head Coach Anna Marie Vesco led the Dragons to a12-5 record, including three Colonial Athletic Associationwins. The trio of conference victories was the most for theDragons since joining the conference in 2002 and the 12wins tied the school record. Last season also marked thefirst time Drexel had two First Team All-CAA selectionsand three all-conference picks. While Drexel's top twopoint producers of all-time, Emily Hoesch and Kerry Kelly, graduated, the Dragons feature eight seniors this season, all but one of whom were starters last season. With thissenior leadership along with the return of First Team All-CAA goalie, Lauren LaBella, the Dragons look to improveon last season's record-setting campaign and play theirway into the conference tournament.

Attack

Jessica Bill, Drexel's leading returning scorer, will head theDragons' attack in her senior season. Bill had a breakoutseason last year as she scored 38 goals including fivegames with four or more goals. She also proved she canproduce in big games as she scored four goals againstHofstra and James Madison, the CAA Tournament finalistslast season. Bill is one of the fastest players in the leaguewho uses her quick first step to attack the goal. JoiningBill upfront will be fellow senior Kaitlin Keegan. In hersecond season as a starter, Keegan made huge strides asshe scored 21 goals and handed out 10 assists in herjunior season. With the graduation of Hoesch and Kelly,Coach Vesco will be looking for even more productionfrom Keegan this season. Senior Nicole Adams returns forDrexel after receiving a medical redshirt after a season-ending injury in 2007. When healthy, Adams gives Drexelan experienced and capable scorer on attack. Returning forher sophomore season on attack will be Becca Drylie-Perkins. The Medford, N.J. native came off the bench ineight games for Coach Vesco last season and contributed apair of goals. With her first season of collegiate lacrosseunder her belt, Drylie-Perkins could make a bigger impactin 2008. Freshman Charlotte Wood will challenge for astarting role this season. Wood features excellent one-on-one moves and a natural ability to finish plays around thenet. Emily Kane and Jaclyn Klunder will also compete forplaying time as freshmen.

Midfield

Katie Bradley returns as a senior in 2008. As a sophomore,Bradley set the Drexel record for assists in a season with23. Last season, she totaled 21 and currently ranks thirdall-time at Drexel in assists. Bradley's field vision andsmooth stick skills help her find open teammates anddeliver the ball to Drexel attackers. A hard-nosed player atmidfield, Bradley earned 33 draw controls and 22

groundballs a season ago. Joining her at midfield will beGwenna Johnson. The former CAA All-Rookie Teamselection is Drexel's second leading returning goal scorerwith 22 tallies in 2007. One of the Dragons' most versatileplayers, Johnson could be called upon to take draws forDrexel in 2008. Sarah Carter returns to Drexel's midfieldafter her first season as a starter. Carter is one of Drexel'sfastest open-field players who excels in transitionsituations. She notched a career-high three assists inDrexel's final conference game, a win over nationallyranked Delaware. If Carter is able to pick up where she leftoff in 2007, the Drexel midfield could cause problems foropposing teams. Also returning at midfield is NicoleIacono. The senior has been one of Coach Vesco's toughestplayers throughout her career. Last season Iacono wasoften Drexel's first player off the bench but will vie for astarting role this year. She scored eight goals last year andalso exhibited excellent defensive skills at midfield. Afterfilling in as a defensive replacement last season, JosieHaller looks to return to the Drexel's midfield this season.Haller, a junior, filled in for the injured Susan Seborg inDrexel's first game of the season last year and started forCoach Vesco the rest of the way. Haller could be anoffensive threat this season after a season of soliddefensive play. Also returning at midfield are a pair ofpromising sophomores, Mariana Uribe and Katie Lawson.Uribe showed flashes of her talent throughout herfreshman season as she notched six goals and threeassists, including a hat trick against Bucknell. She playedin 13 games in her first season and made her only start at

Old Dominion. Lawson scored seven goals in 14 games inher first season, including a pair in Drexel's final game. Her continued improvement and development throughoutlast season showed signs that Lawson could be ready foran increased role this season. Sophomore Danielle Iaconoalso returns at midfield for the Dragons. Iacono played innine games in her first season and recorded one assist. Her outstanding athletic ability in addition to her hardwork could help her find more time on the field this year.Sam Berger, Allegra Gerhardt and Amanda Gregg will jointhe Drexel midfield this season and could contribute inthe 2008 season. Berger is a former Honorable MentionAll-America pick whose hustle and anticipation could leadto minutes at midfield. Gerhardt is one of Drexel’s bestathletes. Her aggressive style of play, along with herathleticism will help her make the transition to thecollegiate lacrosse. Gregg is a natural scorer who has aknack for finding the back of the net. She has a chance tobe among the freshmen conference scoring leaders.Lindsey Kovar joins Drexel and will add depth to themidfield unit as a freshman.

Defense

With the graduation of Kelly Benzing and Susan Seborg ondefense, Drexel will look to senior Maura Cullen to provideleadership on the Dragons' backline. Cullen, a strong and

heady low defender, tied for the team lead in groundballslast season with 30 and led the Drexel defense with 15caused turnovers. Also returning on defense will beKimberly Kabernagel. The junior started 15 games lastseason and was valuable on defense and at midfield. Anatural athlete, Kabernagel will likely play an importantrole in Drexel's defensive plan in 2008. Alexandra Taluccicould also see time as a defender this season. Thesophomore appeared in five games last season whilelearning from Drexel's experienced defensive unit a seasonago. Redshirt freshman Krista Gerstenberger could alsofind time as a defender this season. Drexel's tallest playerat six-feet, Gerstenberger will look to contribute in herfirst season on the field. A pair of newcomers could alsoplay a part in Drexel’s defense scheme this season. SarahBauer, a solid one-on-one defender, is a hard worker andcould earn time on the field in her first season. KatieBlazer has the ability to read plays well and is one ofDrexel’s fastest defenders. Her speed could lead to a roleon defense as a freshman.

Goal

Last season Lauren LaBella had one of the finest seasonsin goal in Drexel history. She was the conference leader ingoals against average and save percentage and fourth inthe nation in those categories. The First Team All-CAApick can keep Drexel in any game with her quick reflexesand solid technique. Fellow junior Rachael Behrndtappeared in 12 games in goal and proved to be a steadyoption for Coach Vesco in the cage. Behrndt's 7.78 goalsagainst average and .510 save percentage wereimprovements from her freshman season. Behrndt showedshe can come through in a big game when she heldnationally ranked Delaware to a single goal while makingfour saves in over 15 minutes in the net to help Drexelsecure victory. Sophomore Whitney Johnson will look toadd depth to Drexel's group of netminders. TheSkaneateles High School graduate continued herdevelopment in goal last season and could play a biggerrole in the future.

Schedule

The Dragons will open the season at Blacksburg, Va. asDrexel will face Virginia Tech from one of the toughestlacrosse leagues, the Atlantic Coast Conference. Drexel'shome opener will be against Penn, a national semi-finalista season ago, and will face other Philadelphia-area schools,La Salle, Villanova and Saint Joseph's. On March 30, Drexelwill open its conference schedule as the Dragons hostHofstra. The season concludes with a two-game roadswing that may be crucial to locking up their first everCAA Tournament berth as they face George Mason onApril 18 and James Madison on April 20.
