Expanding Recycling for a
Greener LAUSD
Expanded Recycling Program includes:
• Increasing waste diversion by expanding current recycling program
• Save the District money by providing recycling services
• Train and educate school maintenance, cafeteria staff, principals,
teachers and students on the benefits recycling
• Incentive program and follow up
LAUSD Trash Bin Audit Results
In 2012, Republic Services completed
a comprehensive audit of 886 LAUSD
schools and other facilities. The
results found that 40% of the material
in an average trash bin was
recyclable. Based on the completed
right-sizing process, LAUSD schools
increased recycling by 16% with a
savings of $1.1 million.

Expanding Programs to Include Mixed
Commingled Recycling
Fibers
Flatten cardboard, clean lunch trays, empty milk
cartons, empty juice boxes, glove boxes, books,
magazines, and catalogs.
Paper
All types of paper, computer, copy, white, color,
office, poster, construction, and newspaper. Files,
bagged shredded paper, old homework, envelopes,
paper bags, junk mail.
Plastics
Bottles, containers, rinsed condiment containers,
styrofoam trays, bagged styrofoam peanuts,
bagged plastic bags, bagged shrink and stretch
wrap.
Metals Aluminum, foil and trays, tin, bi-metals, hangers.
Glass Rinsed bottles and jars.
