POLITICAL PARTICIPATIONSpain has a lot of old people. The low birthrate of the last decades is reflected in the small number of young people.

The laws which affect them aren’t usually present in public debates; only when social alarm is created by criminal events where minors are involved.

When this happens, the most conservative groups of society demand tougher punishment for those youngsters.

CRIMINAL RESPONSIBILITES

BEING 18 MEANS COMING OF AGE FOR CRIMINAL RESPONSIBILITIES. SERIOUS CRIMES COMMITTED BY YOUNGSTERS, OLDER THAN 14, CAN BE PUNISHED WITH THEIR INTERNMENT IN YOUNG OFFENDER’S INSTITUTIONS AND WHEN THEY COME OF AGE THEY HAVE THE SAME CRIMINAL RESPONSBILITIES AS THE REST OF THE CITIZENS.

IN SPAIN EDUCATION IS COMPULSORY UNTIL 16. SCHOOLING FOR EVERYBODY CAME AS A RESULT OF THE EDUCATIONAL REFORMS IN THE LATE PART OF THE 20th C.

CIVIL RIGHTS: Driving

WE CAN RIDE A MOPED WHEN WE ARE 15 BUT WE HAVE TO WAIT TO BE 18 TO DRIVE A CAR OR 125 cc BIKES.

WE CAN START DRIVING LESSONS AT 17 BUT ACOMPANIED BY OUR PARENTS.

CIVL RIGHTS: Drinking and smoking

● DRINKING ALCOHOL OR SMOKING IS BANNED FOR UNDER EIGHTEEN, BUT THEY CAN GO CLUBBING FROM 5 p.m TO 9 p.m (ALTHOUGH ALCOHOL IS FORBIDDEN) FROM THE AGE OF 14.

● BUT USUALLY TEENAGERS BREAK THIS RULE. ● IT’S AGAINST THE LAW TO PLAY THE LOTTERY OR OTHER GAMES OF CHANCE

CIVIL RIGHTS: Family

Sexual relations

● AT 13 YOUNGSTERS CAN HAVE CONSENTED SEX

Marriage

● If you are between 14-18 you need your parents’ consent to get married

● You can become emancipated at 16

● To adopt a child you have to be 25
