Mowing for a Healthy Yard

Spring is finally here — and so is lawn-mowing season. Mowing the lawn is healthy and, if done well, can be beneficial for your grass. Trimming the oldest section of the grass (that’s the top third) shades roots and strengthens a deep root system.

Here at Miller Lawn & Landscape, we are your lawn experts. Our professionals offer a few tips for mowing, to keep your lawn healthy and strong...

Pay attention to the height of the grass.

At the start of spring, allow your grass to get a little taller than its optimum height for a healthy start. Then, cut by about one-third of an inch every time you mow.

Depending on the season, you may have to mow more frequent than others. When and how you mow your grass depends on the type of your grass.

Mix up yourmowing pattern.

Try to mow your lawn in a different direction every time. Mowing in the same direction every time can cause compacted soil. Grass grows and leans in the direction it is mowed so switching your pattern can help grass to grow upright and healthy.

Plus it will make your lawn look like a professional cut your grass.

Handle those lawn trouble spots with care.

If you have uneven ground or areas that are more dry than others, avoid scalping those spots by raising the deck on your mower.

For a long-term solution, consider special landscaping for problem areas.

Try not to cut grass when it’s wet.

Mowing wet grass can cause an uneven cut and can mat grass, prohibiting growth. Wait about 24 hours after a rain-storm or after you have used a sprinkler system, to ensure your lawn is fully dry.

keep your lawn healthy with sharp mower blades.

Dull blades can tear or rip your grass, which is a good environment for insects and pests. So sharpen your mower blades or get them professionally sharpened at the start of the season, as well as later in the summer as necessary.

Stay safe.

And last, but definitely not least, always be safe. Read your lawn mower’s operating

manual. Don’t mow with loose clothing or open-toed shoes. Clear your lawn of any objects, like toys or tools. Keep pets and kids inside for safety.
