LIMITED TWO YEAR WARRANTY ON CRAFTSMAN POWER MOWER

For two years from date of purchase, when this Craftsman Lawn Mower is maintained,lubricated, and tuned up according to the operating and maintenance instructions in theowner's manual, Sears will repair free of charge any defect in material or workmanship.

If this Craftsman Lawn Mower is used for commercial or rental purposes, this warrantyapplies for only 90 days from the date of purchase.

This Warranty does not cover:• Expendable items which become worn during normal use, such as rotary mower

blades, blade adapters, belts, air cleaners and spark plug.• Repairs necessary because of operator abuse or negligence, including bent crank-

shafts and the failure to maintain the equipment according to the instructions con-tained in the owner's manual.

Warranty service is available by returning the Craftsman power mower to the nearestSears Service Center/Department in the United States. This warranty applies only whilethis product is used in the United States.

This Warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights whichvary from state to state.

I. GENERAL OPERATION

• Read, understand, and follow allinstructions on the machine and in the

manual(s) before starting. Be thoroughlyfamiliar with the controls and the properuse of the machine before starting.

• Do not put hands or feet near or underrotating parts. Keep clear of the dis-charge opening at all times.

• Only allow responsible individuals, whoare familiar with the instructions, tooperate the machine.

• Clear the area of objects such as rocks,toys, wire, bones, sticks, etc., whichcould be picked up and thrown by theblade.

• Be sure the area is clear of other peoplebefore mowing. Stop machine if anyoneenters the area.

• Do not operate the mower when bare-foot or wearing open sandals. Alwayswear substantial foot wear,

• Do not pull mower backwards unlessabsolutely necessary, Always look downand behind before and while movingbackwards,

• Do not operate the mower withoutproper guards, plates, grass catcher orother safety protective devices in place.

• See manufacturer's instructions forproper operation and installation ofaccessories, Only use accessories ap-proved by the manufacturer,

• Stop the blade(s) when crossing graveldrives, walks, or roads,

• Stop the engine (motor) whenever youleave the equipment, before cleaningthe mower or unclogging the chute.

• Shut the engine (motor) off and waituntil the blade comes to complete stopbefore removing grass catcher.

• Mow only in daylight or good artificiallight.

• Do not operate the machine while underthe influence of alcohol or drugs.

• Never operate machine in wet grass.Always be sure of your footing: keep afirm hold on the handle and walk; neverrun.

• Disengage the self-propelled mech-anism or drive clutch on mowers soequipped before starting the engine(motor).

• If the equipment should start to vibrateabnormally, stop the engine (motor) andcheck immediately for the cause. Vibra-tion is generally a warning of trouble.

• Always wear safety goggles or safetyglasses with side shields when oper-ating mower.

I1. SLOPE OPERATION

Slopes are a major factor related to slipand fall accidents which can result insevere injury. All slopes require extra cau-tion. If you feel uneasy on a slope, do notmow it.DO:

• Mow across the face of slopes: neverup and down. Exercise extreme cautionwhen changing direction on slopes.

• Remove obstacles such as rocks, treelimbs, etc.

• Watch for holes, ruts, or bumps. Tallgrass can hide obstacles.

DO NOT:

• Do not trim near drop-offs, ditches orembankments, The operator could losefooting or balance.

• Do not trim excessively steep slopes.• Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced foot-

ing could cause slipping.

II1. CHILDREN

Tragic accidents can occur if the operatoris not alert to the presence of children.Children are often attracted to the machineand the mowing activity. Never assumethat children will remain where you lastsaw them.

• Keep children out of the trimming areaand under the watchful care of anotherresponsible adult.

• Be alert and turn machine off if childrenenter the area,

• Before and while walking backwards,look behind and down for small children.

• Never allow children to operate the ma-chine.

• Use extra care when approaching blindcorners, shrubs, trees, or other objectsthat may obscure vision.

IV. SERVICE

• Use extra care in handling gasoline andother fuels, They are flammable andvapors are explosive,- Use only an approved container.- Never remove gas cap or add fuelwith the engine running. Allowengine to cool before refueling. Donot smoke.

- Never refuel the machine indoors.- Never store the machine or fuelcontainer inside where there is anopen flame, such as a water heater.

• Never run a machine inside a closedarea.

• Never make adjustments or repairs withthe engine (motor) running. Disconnectthe spark plug wire, and keep the wireaway from the plug to prevent accidentalstarting.

• Keep nuts and bolts, especially bladeattachment bolts, tight and keep equip-ment in good condition.

• Never tamper with safety devices. Checktheir proper operation regularly.

• Keep machine free of grass, leaves, orother debris build-up. Clean oil or fuelspillage. Allow machine to cool beforestoring.

• Stop and inspect the equipment if youstrike an object. Repair, if necessary,before restarting.

• Never attempt to make wheel heightadjustments while the engine (motor) isrunning.

• Grass catcher components are subjectto wear, damage, and deterioration,which could expose moving parts orallow objects to be thrown, Frequentlycheck components and replace withmanufacturer's recommended parts,when necessary.

• Mower blades are sharp and can cut.Wrap the blade(s) or wear gloves, anduse extra caution when servicing them.

• Do not change the engine governor set-ting or overspeed the engine.

These accessories were available when this lawn mower was produced. They are netshipped with your mower. They are also available at most Sears retail outlets and ser-vice centers. Most Sears stores can also order repair parts for you, when you providethe model number of your lawn mower. Some of these accessories may not apply toyour lawn mower.

Read these instructions and this manual inits entirety before you attempt to assembleor operate your new lawn mower.IMPORTANT: This lawn mower is shippedWITHOUT OIL OR GASOLINE in the engine.Your new lawn mower has been as-

sembled at the factory with the excep-tion of those parts left unassembled forshipping purposes. To ensure safe andproper operation of your lawn mower, allparts and hardware you assemble must betightened securely. Use the correct toolsas necessary to ensure proper tightness.All parts such as nuts, washers, bolts, etc.,necessary to complete the assembly havebeen placed in the parts bag.

TO REMOVE LAWN MOWER FROM

1. Remove loose parts included withmower.

2. Cut down two end corners of cartonand lay end panel down flat.

3. Remove all packing materials exceptpadding between upper and lowerhandle and padding holding operatorpresence control bar to upper handle.

4. Roll lawn mower out of carton andcheck carton thoroughly for additionalloose parts.

tion locks into place in mowing position.2. Remove protective padding, raise up-

per handle section into place on lowerhandle and tighten both handle knobs.

3. Remove handle padding holdingoperator presence control bar to upperhandle.

HOWTO USEYOUR LAWN MOWER

ENGINE SPEED

The engine speed was set at the factoryfor optimum performance. Speed is notadjustable.

ENGINE ZONE CONTROL

_iLCAUTION: Federal regulations requirean engine control to be installed on thislawn mower in order to minimize therisk of blade contact injury. Do not underany circumstances attempt to defeat thefunction of the operator control. The bladeturns when the engine is running.• Your lawn mower is equipped with an

operator presence control bar whichrequires the operator to be positionedbehind the lawn mower handle to startand operate the lawn mower.

TO ADJUST CUTTING HEIGHTRaise wheels for low cut and lower wheelsfor high cut, adjust cutting height to suityour requirements. Medium position isbest for most lawns.* To change cutting height, squeeze ad-

juster lever toward wheel. Move wheelup or down to suit your requirements.Be sure all wheels are in the same set-ting.

NOTE: Adjuster is properly positionedwhen plate tab inserts into hole in lever.Also, 9-position adjusters (if so equipped)allow lever to be positioned between theplate tabs.

BEFORE STAR'|tNG ENGINE

ADD OIL

Your lawnmower is shipped without oil inthe engine. For type and grade of oil touse, see "ENGINE" in the Maintenancesection of this manual.

CAUTION: DO NOT overfill engine withoil, or it will smoke on startup.1. Be sure lawnmower is level and area

around oil fill is clean.2. Remove engine oil plug and fill to the

top slot in filler hole. Pour oil slowly.NOTE; Allow oil to settle down into enginefor accurate reading.3. Reinstall engine oil plug and tighten.• Check oil level before each use. Add oil

if needed. Fill to top slot in filler hole.• Change the oil after every 25 hours of

operation or each season. You mayneed to change the oil more often underdusty, dirty conditions.

ADD GASOLINE

• Fill fuel tank to bottom of tank filler neck.Do not overfill. Use fresh, clean, regularunleaded gasoline with a minimum of 87octane. Do not mix oil with gasoline. Pur-chase fuel in quantities that can be usedwithin 30 days to assure fuel freshness.

£I, CAUTION: Wipe off any spilled oil orfuel. Do not store, spill or use gasolinenear an open flame.• i, CAUTION: Alcohol blended fuels

(called gasohol or using ethanol or metha-nol) can attract moisture which leads toseparation and formation of acids duringstorage. Acidic gas can damage the fuelsystem of an engine while in storage. Toavoid engine problems, the fuel systemshould be emptied before storage of 30days or longer. Drain the gas tank, startthe engine and let it run until the fue! linesand carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuelnext season. See Storage Instructions foradditional information. Never use engineor carburetor cleaner products in the fueltank or permanent damage may occur.

TO START ENGINE

NOTE: Due to protective coatings on theengine, a small amount of smoke may bepresent during the initial use of the prod-uct and should be considered normal.1. To start a cold engine, push primer

three (3) times before trying to start.Use a firm push. This step is notusually necessary when starting anengine which has already run for a fewminutes.

2. Hold operator presence control bardown to the handle and pull starterhandle quickly. Do not allow starterrope to snap back.

NOTE: In cooler weather it may be neces-sary to repeat priming steps. In warmerweather over priming may cause floodingand engine will not start. If you do floodengine, wait a few minutes before attempt-ing to start and do not repeat primingsteps.

CAUTION: Do not use de-thatcherblade attachments on your mower. Suchattachments are hazardous, will damageyour mower and could void your warranty.• Under certain conditions, such as very

tall grass, it may be necessary to raisethe height of cut to reduce pushingeffort and to keep from overloading theengine and leaving clumps of grass clip-pings. It may also be necessary to re-duce ground speed and/or run the lawnmower over the area a second time.

• For extremely heavy cutting, reduce thewidth of cut by overlappir_g previouslycut path and mow slowly.

• For better grass bagging and most cut-ting conditions, the engine speed shouldbe set in the FAST position.

• For side discharge lawn mowers, cuttingin a counter-clockwise direction, start-ing at the outside of the area to be cut,spreads grass clippings more evenlyand puts less load on the engine. Tokeep clippings off of walkways, flowerbeds, etc., make the first cuts in a clock-wise direction.

• Pores in cloth grass catchers can be-come filled with dirt and dust with useand catchers will collect less grass. Toprevent this, regularly hose catcher offwith water and let dry before using.

• Keep top of engine around starter clearand clean of grass clippings and chaff.This will help engine air flow and extendengine liIe.

MULCHING MOWING TIPS

IMPORTANT: For best performance, keepmower housing free of built-up grass andtrash. See "CLEANING" in the Mainte-nance section of this manual.• The special mulching blade will recut

the grass clippings many times andreduce them in size so that as they fallonto the lawn they will disperse intothe grass and not be noticed. Also, themulched grass will biodegrade quicklyto provide nutrients for the lawn. Alwaysmulch with your highest engine (blade)speed as this will provide the best recut-ting action of the blades.

• Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet.Wet grass tends to form clumps andinterferes with the mulching action. Thebest time to mow your lawn is the earlyafternoon. At this time the grass hasdried and the newly cut area will not beexposed to the direct sun.

• For best results, adjust the lawn mowercutting height so that the lawn mowercuts off only the top one-third of thegrass blades. If the lawn is overgrown itwill be necessary to raise the height ofcut to reduce pushing effort and to keepfrom overloading the engine and leavingclumps of mulched grass. For extremelyheavy grass, reduce your width of cutby overlapping previously cut path andmow slowly.

• Certain types of grass and grassconditions may require that an area bemulched a second time to completelyhide the clippings. When doing a secondcut, mow across or perpendicular to thefirst cut path.

* Change your cutting pattern from weekto week. Mow north to south one weekthen change to east to west the nextweek. This will help prevent matting andgraining of the lawn.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

The warranty on this fawn mower does notcover items that have been subjected tooperator abuse or negligence, To receivefull value from the warranty, operatormust maintain mower as instructed in thismanual.

Some adjustments will need to be madeperiodically to properly maintain your unit.All adjustments in the Service and Adjust-ments section of this manual should bechecked at least once each season.

• Once a year, replace the spark plug,clean or replace air filter element andcheck blade for wear. A new spark plugand clean/new air filter element assureproper air-fuel mixture and help yourengine run better and last longer.

IMPORTANT: Do not oil or greaseplastic wheel bearings. Viscous lubri-cants will attract dust and dirt that willshorten the life of the self-lubricatingbearings. If you feel they must belubricated, use only a dry, powderedgraphite type lubricant sparingly.

• Avoid stumps, stones, deep ruts, sharpobjects and other hazards that maycause tire damage.

BLADE CARE

For best results, mower blade must bekept sharp. Replace bent or damagedblades.

TO REMOVE BLADE

1. Disconnect spark plug wire from sparkplug and place wire where it cannotcome in contact with spark plug.

2, Turn lawn mower on its side. Makesure air filter and carburetor are up.

3. Use a wood block between blade andmower housing to prevent blade fromturning when removing blade bolt.

NOTE: Protect your hands with glovesand/or wrap blade with heavy cloth.4. Remove blade bolt by turning counter-

clockwise,5. Remove blade and attaching hard-

ware (bolt, lock washer and hardenedwasher).

NOTE: Remove the blade adapter andcheck the key inside hub of blade adapter.The key must be in good condition to workproperly. Replace adapter if damaged.

TO REPLACE BLADE

1. Position the blade adapter on the en-gine crankshaft. Be sure key in adapterand crankshaft keyway are aligned,

2. Position blade on the blade adapteraligning the two (2) holes in the bladewith the raised lugs on the adapter.

3. Be sure the trailing edge of blade (op-posite sharp edge) is up toward theengine.

4. Install the blade bolt with the lockwasher and hardened washer intoblade adapter and crankshaft.

5. Use block of wood between blade and

lawn mower housing and tighten theblade bolt, turning clockwise.

• The recommended tightening torque is35-40 ft. Ibs.

IMPORTANT: Blade bolt is grade 8 heattreated.TO SHARPEN BLADENOTE: We do not recommend sharpeningblade - but if you do, be sure the blade isbalanced.Care should be taken to keep the bladebalanced. An unbalanced blade willcause eventual damage to lawn mower orengine.• The blade can be sharpened with a file

or on a grinding wheel, Do not attemptto sharpen while on the mower.

• To check blade balance, drive a nail intoa beam or wall. Leave about one inch ofthe straight nail exposed. Place centerhole of blade over the head of the nail.If blade is balanced, it should remain ina horizontal position. If either end of theblade moves downward, sharpen theheavy end until the blade is balanced.

GRASS CATCHER

(If purchased as an accessory)• The grass catcher may be hosed with

water, but must be dry when used,• Check yourgrass catcher often for damage

or deterioration. Through normal use it willwear. If catcher needs replacing, replaceonly with a manufacturerapproved replace-ment catcher. Give the lawn mower model

number when ordering.

ENGINELUBRICATION

Use only high quality detergent oil rated withAPI service classification SF-SJ. Select the

oil's SAE viscosity grade according to yourexpected operating temperature.

SAE VISCOSrW GRADES

6. Wait one minute to allow oil to settle.Insert and tighten dipstick, then re-move it to check oil level.

7. Continue adding small amounts ofoil and rechecking the dipstick until itreads full. DO NOT overfill, or enginewill smoke on startup,

8, Always be sure to retighten oil dipstickbefore starting engine.

9. Reconnect spark plug wire to sparkplug.

NOTE: Although multi-viscosity oils (5W30,10W30 etc.) improve starting incold weather,these multi-viscosity oils will result in in-creased oil consumption when used above32_E Check your engine oil level more fre-quently to avoid possible engine damagefrom running low on oil.Change the oil after every 25 hours ofoperation orat least once a year if the lawnmower is not used for 25 hours in oneyear.Check the crankcase oil level beforestarting the engine and after each five (5)hours of continuous use. Tighten oil plugsecurely each time you check the oil level.

TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL

NOTE: Before tipping lawn mower to drainoil, drain fuel tank by running engine untilfuel tank is empty.1. Disconnect spark plug wire from spark

plug and place wire where it cannotcome in contact with spark plug.

2. Remove engine oil cap; lay aside on a Collarclean surface.

3. Tip lawn mower on its side as shownand drain oil into a suitable container.Rock lawn mower back and forth to re-

move any oi! trapped inside of engine.4. Wipe off any spilled oil from lawn

mower or side of engine. Slot5. Fill engine with oft. The engine oil capacity

is 20 oz. If oil is not completely drained Air filterfrom engine, you may not need the entire Tab'container of a 20 oz, bottle of oil. Slowly Air filter covepour 3/4 of the oil from the containerdownthe oil fill spout into the engine. 12

Your engine will not run properly and maybe damaged by using a dirty air filter. Re-place the air filter every 100 hours of op-eration or every season, whichever occursfirst. Service air cleaner more often under

dusty conditions, Do not wash air filter.

TO CHANGE AIR FILTER

1. Remove the air filter by turning coun-terclockwise to the stop and pull awayfrom collar.

2. Remove filter from inside of cover.3. Clean the inside of the cover and the

collar to remove any dirt accumulation.4. Insert new filter into cover.5. Put air filter cover and filter into collar

aligning the tab with the slot.6. Push in on cover and turn clockwise to

tighten.

The reardeflector, attached between the rearwheels of your mower, isprovidedtominimizethe possibility that objects will be thrown outof the rear of the mower into the operator'smowing position. If the deflector becomesdamaged, it should be replaced.DISCHARGE GUARD

The discharge guard, attached to thedischarge opening of your lawn mower, isprovided to prevent the possibility of injuryresulting from objects being thrown out ofthe discharge opening into the operatormowing position. If the discharge guardbecomes damaged, it should be replaced.TO ADJUST HANDLE

The handle can be mounted in a high orlow position. The mounting holes in thebottom of lower handle are off center forraising or lowering the handle.NOTE: The upper handle has an "anti-fold" bracket located on the left side of thehandle. This bracket prevents the upperhandle from folding forward, which helpsprotect control cable(s) from damage.

1. Remove upper handle and all partsattached to lower handle.

2. Remove hairpin cotters from lowerhandle bracket mounting pin,

Your engine speed has been factory set.Do not attempt to increase engine speedor it may result in personal injury. If youbelieve that engine is running too fast or

too slow, take your mower to a Sears orother qualified service center for repairand adjustment.CARBURETOR

Your carburetor has a non-adjustablefixed main jet for mixture control. If yourengine does not operate propedy due tosuspected carburetor problems, take yourlawn mower to a Sears or other qualifiedservice center for repair and/or adjust-ment.IMPORTANT: Never tamper with theengine governor, which is factory setfor proper engine speed. Overspeedingthe engine above the factory high speedsetting can be dangerous. Immediately prepare your lawn mower forstorage at the end of the season or if theunit will not be used for 30 days or more.

LAWN MOWER

When lawn mower is to be stored for aperiod of time, clean it thoroughly, removeall dirt, grease, leaves, etc. Store in aclean, dry area.1. Clean entire lawn mower (See

HANDLE

IMPORTANT: It is important to preventgum deposits from forming in essentialfuel system parts such as carburetor, fuelfilter, fuel hose, or tank during storage.Also, alcohol blended fuels (,called gasoholor using ethanol or methanol) can attractmoisture which leads to separation andformation of acids during storage. Acidicgas can damage the fuel system of anengine while in storage.1. Drain the fuel tank.2. Start the engine and let it run until the

fuel lines and carburetor are empty,• Never use engine or carburetor cleaner

products in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.

• Use fresh fuel next season.NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptablealternative in minimizing the formation offuel gum deposits during storage. Addstabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or stor-age container, Always follow the mix ratiofound on stabilizer container. Run engineat least 10 minutes after adding stabilizerto allow the stabilizer to reach the carbure-

tor. Do not drain the gas tank and carbure-tor if using fuel stabilizer.

ENGINE OIL

Drain oil (with engine warm) and replacewith clean engine oil. (See "ENGINE" inthe Maintenance section of this manual).CYLINDER

1. Remove spark plug,2. Pour one ounce (29 ml) of oil through

spark plug hole into cylinder.3. Pull starter handle slowly a few times

to distribute oil.4. Replace with new spark plug.

• Do not store gasoline from one seasonto another.

• Replace your gasoline can if your canstarts to rust. Rust and/or dirt in yourgasoline will cause problems.

• If possible, store your unit indoors andcover it to protect it from dust and dirt.

• Cover your unit with a suitable protec-tive cover that does not retain moisture.Do not use plastic. Plastic cannotbreathe, which allows condensation toform and will cause your unit to rust,

I. OPERACION• Antes de empezar, debe familiarizarse

Lea estas instrucoionesy este manual comple-tamente antes de tratar de montar u operar susegadora nueva.IMPORTANTE: Este cortac_sped viene SINACEITE O GASOLINA en el motor.Su segadora nueva ha sido montada en laf_brica con la excepci6n de aquellas partes quese dejaron sin montar pot razones de envfo.Todas las partes como las tuercas, las arande-las, los pernos, etc., que son necesarias paracompletar el montaje hen sido colocadas en labofsa de partes. Para asegurarse que su sega-dora funcione en lorma segura y adecuada,todas las partes y los art_culos de ferreteria quese monten tienen que ser apretados segura-mente. Use las herramientes correctas, comosea necesario, para asegurar que se aprietenadecuadamente.PARA REMOVER LA SEGADORA DELA CAJA DE CARTON1, Remueva las partes sueltas que se incluyen

con la segadora.2. Corte las doe esquinas de los extremos

de la caja de cart6n y tienda et panel delextremo piano.

3. Remueva todo el material de empaque, ex-cepto la curia entre el mango superior y _1inferior, y la curia que sujeta la barra de loscontrol que exige la presencia del operadorjunto con el mango superior.

4. Haga rodar la segadora hacia afuera de lacaja de cart6n y revfsela cuidadosamentepara verificar si todavfa quedan partessueltas adicionales.

COMO PREPARAR SU SEGADORAPARA DESDOBLAR EL MANGOIMPORTANTE: Despliegue el mango conmucho cuidado pare no pellizcar o dafiar loscables de control.1. Levante los mangos hasta que la secci6n

del mango inferior se asegure en su lugar,en la posici6n para segar.

2. Remueva la curia protectora, levante la sec-ciSn del mango superior hasta su lugar enel mango inferior, y apriete ambas manillasdel mango.

3. Remueva la curia del mango que sujeta labarra de los control que exige la presenciadel operador junto con el mango superior.

PARA AJUSTAR LA ALTURA DECORTELevante las ruedas para el corte bajo y baje lasruedas para el corte alto., ajuste la altura detorte para que se acomode a sus requisitos, Lapesici6n del medic es la mejor para la mayorfade los c_spedes.• Para cambiar la altura de torte, empuje la

palanca del ajustador hacia la rueda. Muevala rueda hacia arriba o hacia abajo de modoque se acomode a sus requisitos. Aseg_reseque todas las ruedas queden igualmenteajustadas.

AVISO: El ajustador esta correctamentecolocado cuando las orejas de la placa estdninsertadas en el agujero del mango. TambiSn,los ajustes de 9 posiciones (si equipado) per-miten que el mango pueda ser movido entre lasorejas de la placa.

2. Remueva la tapa del depOsitiode aceite delmotor y rellene hasta la cima de la ranuraen el agujero del rellenador.Vacfe el aceitelentamente. No Io Ilene demasiado.

AVISO: Permita que el aceite se aciente blenen el motor para una lectura exaota.3. Vuelva a instalar la tapa del dep_sitio de

aceite del motor y aprit_la.• Revise el nivel de aceite antes de cada uso.

Agregue aceite si es necesqrio. Rellenehasta la cima de la ranura en el agujero delrellenador.

• Cambie el aceite despu_s de 25 horas deoperaciOn o una vez por temporada. Puedenecesitar cambiar el acelte mds a menudocuando las condiciones son polvorosas osucias.

AGREGUE GASOLINAAVISO: Antes de rellenar el deposito decarburante, remover y descartar los residuosdel tapon que se encuentran al interiordeldepoelto.• Llene el estanque de combustible hasta

la parte inferiordel cuello de relleno delestanque de gasolina. No Io Ilene demasiado.Use gasolina regular, sin plomo, nueva y lim-pia con el minimo de 87 octanos. No mezcleel aceite con la gasolina, Para asegurarque la gasolina utilizada sea fresca compreestanques los cuales puedan set utilizados

combustiblederramado. No almacene, derrameo use gasolina cerca de una llama expuesta./ikPRECAUCI(_N: Los combustiblesmezclados con alcohol (conocidos comogasohol, o el uso de etanol o metanol) puedenatraer la humedad, la que conduce a laseparaciOn y formaciOn de dcidos durante elalmacenamiento. La gasolina acfdica puededafiar el sistema del combustible de un motordurante el almacenamiento. Para evitar losproblemas con el motor, se debe vaciar elsistema del combustible antes de guardarlopor un pedodo de 30 dfas o m&s.Vacfe el

PARA HACER ARRANCAR EL MOTORAVISO: Debido alas capas protectoras del mo-tor, una cantidad pequefia de humo puede es-tar presente durante el use inicial del productoy se debe considerar normal.1. Para hacer arrancar un motor frio, empuje

el cebador tres (3) veces antes de tratado.Empuje firmemente. Este paso normal-mente no es necesario cuando se hacearrancar un motor que ya ha estado funcio-nando por unos cuantos minutos.

2. Sujete la barra de controles que exigen lapresencia del operador abajo en el mangoy tire el mango del arrancador rdpidamente.No permita que el cordon arrancador sedevuelva abruptamente.

PARA PARAR EL MOTOR• Para parar el motor, suelte la barra de con-

troles que exigen la presencia del operador.AVISO: En climas rods frl'os puede que seanecesado repetir los pasos del cebado. En cli-mas m_.s calurosos el cebar demasiado puedeproducirel ahogo y el motor no va a arrancar.Si se ahoga el motor espere unos cuantosminutos antes de tratar de hacedo arrancar yno repita lospasos del cebado.

I_OpNSEJOS PARA SEGARRECAUCION: No utilizar dispositivos anti-

paja de la hoja en la segadera ya que estosaccesorios son peligmsos, pueden daSar susegadora y anular su garantfa.• Bajo ciertas condicienes, tal como c_sped

muy alto, puede ser neoesario el elevar laaltura del corte pars reducir el esfuerzonecesario para empujar la segadora y pareevitar sobrecargar el motor, dejando mon-tones de recortes de c_sped, Puede que seanecesario reducir la velocidad del recorridoy/o haga funcionar la segadora sobre el _reapor segunda vez.

•Para un corte muy pesado, reduzca el anchodel corte pasando parcialmente per encimadel lugar anteriormente cortado y sieguelentamente.

• Para un mejor ensacado del c_sped y pare lamayor{a de las condiciones de corte, la velo-cidad.del motor debe ajustarse ala posici6nde RAPIDO.

• Si/as segadoras de descarga lateral cortanen una direcci6n contraria alas manillas delreloj, si se empieza en la parte de afueradel _rea que se va a cortar, se repartir_tnlosrecortes del c6sped en forma robs pareja yel motor se cargar& menos. Pare evitar quelos recortes caigan en los senderos, en lasflores, etc., haga los primeros cortes en ladireccibn de las manillas del reloj.

• Los pores en los recogedores de c_sped detela pueden Ilenarse con mugre y polvo conel use y los recogedores recaudar&n menosc_sped. Para evitar Osto, rocfe el recogedorcon la manguera de agua, regularmente, yd_jelo secarse antes de usado.

• Mantenga le parte superior del motor, alred-edor del arrancador, despejada y sin recortesde c&sped y paja. Esto ayudar8 el flujo delaire del motor y extender& su duraci6n.

CONSEJOS PARA SEGAR Y ACOL-CHARIMPORTANTE: Para obtener el mejor ren-dimiento mantenga la caja de la segadora sinacumulacion de cesped y basura. Vea "LIMP-IEZA" in la seccion Mantenimiento de estemanual.• La cuchilla acolchadora especial va a volver

a cortar los recortes de c_sped touchesveces, y los reduce en tamaSo, de modo quesi se caen en el c_sped se van a disperserentre _ste y no se van a notar. Tambi_n, elc_sped acolchado se va a deshacer r&pidam-ente entregando substancias nutritivas parael c_sped. Siempre aoolche con la velocidaddel motor (cuchilla) m_s alta, pues asi seobtendr._ la mejor acci6n de recorte de lascuchillas.

• Evite cortar el c_sped cuando est_ mojado.El c_sped mojado tiende a formar montonese interfiere con la acci6n de acolchado.La mejor hera pare segar el c_sped estemprano en la tarde. A esa hora _ste se hasecado y el _rea reci_n cortada no quedar&expuesta al sol directo.

•Para obtener los mejores resultados, aiustela altura del torte de la segadora de modeque esta corte solamente el tercio superiorde las hojas de c_sped. En el caso de que elc_sped haya crecido demasiado, puede sernecesario el elevar la altura del corte parereducir el esfuerzo necesario para empujar lasegadora y para evitar sobrecargar el motor,dejando montones de recortes de cOsped.Para un cesped muy pesado, reduzca el en-cho del certe pasendo per encima del lugaranteriormente cortado y siegue lentamente.

Ciertos tipos de c_sped y sus condicionespueden exigir que un &ree tenga que seracolchada pot segunda vez para escondercompletarnente los recortes.Cuando se hagael segundo torte, siegue atravesado o enforma perpendicular e la pasada del primercorte.Cambie su patr6n de corte de semana asemana. Slegue de norte a sur una semanay luego cambie de este a oeste Is prOximasemana. Esto evitar&que el cesped seenrede y cambie de direcci6n.

CUIDADO DE LA CUCHILLAPara obtener losmejores resultados, la cuchillade la segadera tienen que mantenerse afilada.Cambie ta cuchilla doblada o dafiada.PARA REMOVER LA CUCHILLA

1. Desconecte el alambre de la buifa y p6n-galo en donde no pueda entrar en contactocon _sta.

2. Haga descansar la segadora en su lado.AsegSrese que el filtro de aire y que elcarburador queden mirando hacia ardba.

3. Use un bloque de madera entre la cuchillay la caja de la segadera para evitar qua lacuchilla gire cuando sele quite el perno.

AVISO: Proteja sus manos con guantes y/oenvuelva la cuchilla con una tela gruesa.4. Remueva el perno de la cuchilla girdndolo

en el sentido contrario en que giran lasmanillas del reloj.

5. Remueva la cuchilla y los artfculos de fer-reteria adjuntadores (el perno, la arandelade seguridad y la arandelaenduredda).

AVISO: Remueva el adaptador de la cuchilla yrevise el cobo interior de la ranura del adap-tador de la cuchilla. La ranura tiene qua estaren buenas condiciones para qua funcione enforma adecuada. Cambie el adaptador si estddafiado.PARA CAMBIAR LA CUCHILLA

1. Ponga el adaptador de la cuchilla en elciguefial del motor. Aseg_rese que la ranuradel adaptador y qua el chavetero del cigue-fial estdn alineados.

2. Ponga la cuchilla en el adaptador de Betaalinaando los dos (2) agujeros en la cuchillacon lae salientes elevadas en el adaptador.

3. AsegOrese de que el borde de salida dela cuchilla (opuesto al borde afilad0) est_hacia arriba hada el motor.

4, Instale el perno de la cuchilla con la aran-dela de seguddad y la arandela endurecidaen el adaptador de la cuchilla y el ¢iguefial.

5. Use un bleque de madera entre la cochiUay la caja de la segadora y apriete el pernode la cochilla gir._ndolo en el sentido en quegiran lae maniUas del reloj.

• La torei6n para apretar recomendada es de35 - 40 pies libras.

• Para reviser el balance de la cuchilla, claveun clavo en una viga o en la pared. Dejealrededor de una pulgada de un clavo rectoexpuesto. MOTORLUBRICACIONUse solamente aceite de detergente de attacalidad clasificado con la ctasificacionSF-SJ deservicio API. Seleccione la calided de viscosi-dad SAE seg_n su temperatura de operacibnesperade.

6. Permita que el aceite se asienle. Insertey apriete la varilla medidora de aceite,despu_s remuevala para leer el nivel deaceite.

7. ContinUe agregando cantidades pequeasde aceite y vuelva a inspecoionar la vafillamedidora hasta que lea lleno (FULL). NOsobrellene el motor con aceite, o fumar_cuando Io valla a arrancar.

8. AsegOrese de apretar la variUa medidoradel aceite antes de arrancar el motor.

9. Vuelva a conectar el alambre de la bujia a6sta.

AVISO: A pesar de que los aceites de multi-viscosidad (5W30, 10W30. etc.) mejoran elarranque en clima frfo, estos aceites de mul-tiviscosidadvan ha aumentar el consumo deaceite cuando se usan en temperatures sobre32° F. Revise el nivel del aceite del motor m&s amenudo, para evitar un posible dafio en el mo-tor, debido a que no tiene suficiente acoite.Cambie el aceite despu_s de 25 horas deoperaci6n o por Io menos una vez al afio si lasegadora se utiliza menos 25 horas el afio.Revise el nNel del acelte del carter antes dearrancar el motor y despu_s de cada cinco (5)horas de uso continuado. Apriete el tapbn delaceite en forma segura cada vez que revise elnivel del aceite.PARA CAMBIAR EL ACEITE DEL MOTOR

AVISO: Antes de inclinar la segadora para dre-nar el aceite, drene el tanque de combustiblehaciendo correr el motor hasta que el tanqueestd vacio.1. Desconecte el alambre de la buiia y

pbngalo de modo que no pueda entrar encontacto con _sta.

2. Remueva la tapa del dep6sito del aceite;dejela a un lade en una superficie limpia.

3. Incline la cortadora de cdsped pot estecostado tal como se muestra y purgue elaceite en un reciplente Id6neo. Mueva lasegadora de atrds para adelante para re-mover todo el acelte que se haya quededoatrapado dentro del motor.

4. Umpie todo el aceite derramado en la sega-dora yen el lado del motor.

5. Rellene el motorcon aceite. La capacidadde acelte del motor es de 20 oz. Si el aceiteno estd completamente drenado del motor,no se necesitard el contenedor entero de 20oz. de aceite, Usted recibe un envase deaceite con la unidad. Vierta lentamente 3/4de aceite en el tubu de relleno del motor.

FILTRO DE AIRESu motor puede sufrir averias y funcionardemanera incorrecta con un |ittrodel aire sucio.Sustituir el papel del cartucho una vez al afio otras 100 horas de funcionamiento, m&s a menu*do si se utiliza en condiciones de suciedad ypolvo particulares. No lave el filtro de aire.PARA CAMBIAR EL FILTRO DE AIRE1. Remueva el filtro de aire gir&ndolo en el

sentido contrario en que giran las manillasdel reloj, hasta el tope, y retirelo del collar.

2. Remueva el fUtro de la parte intedor de lacubierta.

3. Umpie la parte interior de la cubierta y elcollar para remover toda acumulaci6n demugre.

4. tnserte el filtro nuevo en la cubierta.5. Ponga la cubierta del filtro de alre dentro

del collar alineando la oreja con la ranura.6. Empuje la cubierta hacia adentro y gfrela

en el sentido de las maniitas del reloj paraapretarla.

Si se dafia el desviadordebe camblarse.PROTECCI6N CONTRA LA DESCARGASe proporciona una protecci6n eontra la des-carga, adjunta a la abertura de descarga de susegadora, para evitar la posibilidad que objetossean lanzados hacia afuera de la abertura dedescarga, en la posici6n en donde se encuen-tra el operador, Si se dafia la protecci6n contrala descarga debe cambiarse.PARA AJUSTAR EL MANGOEl mango puede ser montado a una posici6nalta o baja. Los agujeros de montaje en elmango inferiorestdn fuera del centro paralevantar y bajar el mango.NOTA: El mango superior tiene un soporte"contra-dobla" situado en el lado izquierdodel mango. Este soporte evita que el mangosupedor doble hacla adelante, Io cual ayudaa proteger el (los) cable(s) de control contracualquier defio.

1. Remueva el mango superior y todas laspartes atadas al mango inferior,

2. Remueva las clavijas de horquilla de laclavija de montaje del puntaJ del mango,

3. Apreite el mango inferior hacia dentro pararemoverlo de las clavijas de montaje.

4. Gire el mango inferiorpot encima paralevantar o bajar el mango.

5. Vuelva a montar las clavijas de horquilla porencima de las clavijas de montaje.

6. Vuelva a montar el mango superior y todeslas partes removidas del mango inferior.

MOTORVELOCIDAD DEL MOTORLa velocidad del motor ha sido ajustada en la f_*brica.No trate de aumentar la velocidaddel motorpues se pueden producir lesioneSpersonales. Sicree que el motor est_ funcionando demaelado

rapido o demasiado lento, lieve su segadora amas con su centre de servicio Sears o con unotro centro de servicio cualificado.CARBURADORSu carburador tiene un chorro principal fijono ajustable para controlar la mezcla. Si sumotor no est_ funcionando en forma adecuadadebido a problemas que se sospecha vienendel carburador, Ileve su segadora a contactocon su centro de servicio Sears o con un ottocentre de servicio cualificado para repararla y/oajustada.IMPORTANTE: Nunca manipule el reguladordel motor, el que ha sido ajustado en la fabricapara la velocidad del motor adecuada, Puedeser peligroso hacer funcionar el motor a unavelocidad por sobre el ajuste de alta velocidadde la f_.brica. Si cree que la velocidad atta regu-lada del motor necesita ajuste,contacto con sucentro de servicio Sears o con un otro centrode servicio cualificado, el que cuenta con eleqoipo adecuado y la expedencia para hacerlos ajustes necesarios.

Inmediatamente prepare su segadora para elalmacenamiento el final de cada temporada o sila unidad no se va a usar pot 30 dias o m&s.SEGADORACuando se va a guardar la segadora por ciertopeHodo de tiempo, limpiela cuidadosamente,remueva toda la mugre, la grasa, las hoias, etc,Gu_rdela en un drea limpia y seca.1. Umpie toda la segadora (Vea"LIMPIEZA"

en la secci6n de Mantenimento de estemanual}.

2. Lubr{quela seg_n se muestra en la secoibnde Mantenimento de este manual.

3. Asegt_rese de que todas las tuercas yclavijas y todos los pernos y torniUosest_napretados en foma segura. Inspeccionelas partes que se mueven pafa verificar siest_,ndahadas, quebradas o desgastadas.C_.mbielas si es necesario.

4. Retoque todas las superficiesque est(_noxidadas o con la pintura picada; use unalija antes de pintar.

MANGOPuede doblar el mango de su segadora para elalmacenamiento.NOTA: El mango superior tiene un soporte"contra-dobla" situado en el lado izquierdodel mango. IMPORTANTE: Cuando doble el mango para elalmacenamiento o el transporte, asegerese queIo doble segdn se muestra o purde daSar loscables de control.• Cuando prepare sus mangos a partir de

la posicibnde almacenamiento, el mangoinferior autom_.ticamente se asegurara en laposicibn para segar.

MOTORSISTEMA DE COMBUSTIBLEIMPORTANTE: Es importante evitar quese formen depositos de coma en partesfundamentales dol sistemade combustibletalescomo el carburador, el fittro de/combustible,la mangura del combustible o en el estanquedurante el almaoenamiento. Los combustiblesmezctados con alcohol (conocidocomegasohol o que tlenen etanol o metanol)Pueden atraer humedad, to que conduce a laseparacion y a la formaci6n de aoidosduranteel almacenamiento. La gasolina acida puededanar el sistema de combustible de un motordurante el perido de almacenamiento.1. Drene el estanque de combustible.2. Haga arrancar el motor y d_jelo funcionar

hasta que las Itneas del combustibley elcarburador est_n vacios.

• Nunca use los productospara limpieza delcarburador o del motor en el estanque decombustible pues se pueden producir daSospermanentes.

• Use combustible nuevo la pr6xima temporada.AVISO: El estabilizador de combustible es unaalternativa aceptable para reducir a un m[nimola formaci6n de dep6sitos de goma en el com-bustible durante el periodo de almacenamiento.Agregue estabilizador a ta gasolina en el es-tanque de combustible o en el envase para elalmacenamiento. Siempre siga la proporci6n demezcla qua se encuentra en el envase del estabi-lizador. Haga funcionar el motor por Io menos 10minutos despu_s de agregar el estabilizador, parapermitir que este Ilegue al carburador. No drene lagasolina del estanque de gasolina y el carburadorsi se est_ usando estabilizador de combustible.

ACEITE DEL MOTORDrane el aceite (conel motorcaliente) y cdmbielocon aceite de motor limplo.(Vea "MOTOR" en lasecci6n de Mantenimento de este manual.)

CILINDRO1. Remueva la bujla.2. Vacl'e una onza (29 ml) de aceite a travds

del agujero de la bujl'aen el cilindro.3. Tire la manilla de arranque lentamente unas

cuantas veces para distribuirel aceite,4. Vuelva a rnontar la nueva bujfa.

OTROS• No guarde ta gasolina de una temporada a la

otra,• Cambie el envase de la gasolina si se emp-

ieza a oxidar.La oxidaci6ny/o la mugre ensu gasolina pmducirdn pmblemas.

• Si es posible, guarde su unidad en un recintocerrado y cdbrala para protegerlacontra elpolvo y la mugra.

3. Cambie el adaptador de la cuchilla.4. Mueva la segadora a un lugar

en dondo el cesped ha sidocortado o a ana saperficle firmepara hater arrancar el motor.
