We invite beginners and adventurers of all ages who wish to experience an art form. Classes begin with early childhood and elementary school, Arts Institutes for teenagers and continuing education for adults. Member prices are shown in parentheses throughout class listings—become a member when you enroll!

State Film Festival into a week long celebration of film, digital media, installations, music, ideas and performances in the heart of Lawrence. Taking place in unexpected places indoors and out in the Lawrence Cultural District, the Free

State Festival will flood the city in a new wave of film, music, art, and ideas.

Dear Friends,

I love the divine sense of the Lawrence Arts Center.

I’m in our theater on a catwalk watching a rehearsal for our Pinocchio directed by Ric Averill. The performances will be over when you read this, but perhaps you will have seen our new creation of the classic tale with Spencer Lott, visiting puppeteer from New Victory Theater in NYC, Arts Center dancers and actors of all ages, and original music by Lawrence’s Drakkar Sauna.

Our Creative Observer exhibition is closing after two months of art, films, conversation, music, and lectures inspired by William Burroughs, one of Lawrence’s most famous citizens who, according to Norman Mailer, “is the only American novelist who may conceivably be possessed by genius.” Opinions on this diverge, but history and popular culture prove that dissenters, demurrers, and different thinkers are drawn to our town, as was Burroughs, and whatever the reason, it is distilled at our Arts Center.

Theaters, dance studios, art rooms, galleries, and other creative spaces have always been havens for different thinkers, and we see this every day in children, teenagers, and adults who inhabit the Lawrence Arts Center. We teach serious artistic practice in dance, theater, and visual arts; we teach academic subjects, such as physics, history, reading, chemistry, and writing, in arts immersive environments; and we offer a place for those who hear the beats of different drummers and those who “demur.” (In the theater, visual art, dance, we can demur, but honestly, so our noses do not grow.)

It’s madness to obsessively write poetry; to stay on stage late into the night with a dance instructor, a pup-peteer, a cellist, and a kazoo player, or to lose sleep firing a kiln, or to give voice to iconoclastic artists, to create space and time for all the varied carols of the world; or to turn trash and found objects into elements of a sculpture for preschoolers, but it is beautiful to do so, and we cannot help but do it, and according to Emily Dickinson, it makes divine sense.*

Please join us this summer at the Lawrence Arts Center to dance, write, paint, act, make movies, and in other ways for short times transcend the usual contexts, try disequilibrium, and create something new.

The Lawrence Arts Center leads the way in taking STEM to STEAM. In 2009, the White House and the United States Department of Education challenged the nation to find innovative, rigorous ways to teach Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to youth. Acknowledging the vital role art has in teaching innovative and creative thinking, the Art Space program places the Lawrence Arts Center at the epicenter of the movement to add an “A” for “art,” turning STEM into STEAM.

Art Space is the Arts Center’s integrated visual art and science program for students 1st -5th grades. Based on the idea that critical thinking, problem solving, and the ability to innovate are essential skills in all educational environments, Arts Space is an inspired learning environment in which students try new things, test the limits of their imaginations, practice innovation, and build creative connections.

Art Space summer camps focus on a key principle of art and connect art concepts with scientific concepts, under a cul-tural theme relevant to young people. Camps are team-taught and designed to balance experiences in visual art with performing arts. Scientists-in-residence work with instructors and students to connect art with scientific concepts in an atmosphere in which students apply creativity in a new context. Camps often incorporate visits by artists and STEM professionals. This integrated science and art curriculum meets national art education and science standards and was developed for the program through a grant from the Elizabeth Schultz Foundation of the Douglas County Community Foundation, Tradewind Energy, Enel Green Power, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, and Target. Reading lists and classroom reference material provided by the Lawrence Public Library.

All students should bring a healthy snack for mid-morning and the afternoon, and a sack lunch. No soda, please. Sessions are 9am-4pm, with a break for lunch at 12-1pm with Arts Center staff.

Carmine Ballere Scholarship April 19 2014, 2:30-4:00Established in 1997, this scholarship is awarded to those students who have demonstrated excellence and commitment in dance. Encouraging the study of ballet and supporting life-long devotion to dance, this scholarship covers the costs of four ballet and pointe classes per week and all production and participation fees during the Fall 2014/Spring 2015 semesters. The awardees will be required to serve as teacher’s assistants for one preschool/Kinder class per week. They must currently be enrolled in Ballet IV-VII to audition.

Lawrence Ballet Theatre 2014-2015 June 28, 1:15-3pmThe Arts Center’s pre-professional advanced ballet company selects members by an annual audition. Members are expected to meet requirements set by the artistic director. AUDITIONS MAY 4 | CALLBACKS MAY 4, 5 & 6Summer Youth Theater is a performance-based theater arts program for youth grades 3 thru 12. Professional directors, choreographers, musicians and theater technicians observe Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts National Theater Education Standards while working with kids to produce high quality shows performed for enthusias-tic, often sold out audiences. Most importantly, SYT kids have fun, make new friends, and create memories to last a lifetime! Auditions: Prepared audition is expected. There will be simultaneous time slots for both the 3rd–8th and 8th–12th grade programs. Call the Arts Center, 785.843.2787 to sign up for a one hour time slot in advance: 2-3 PM, 3-4 PM or 4-5 PM. Auditionees will audition as a group in their chosen hour time slot. All students auditioning for the musicals Peter Pan and Spamalot should prepare a monologue of 1 minute or less and 16 bars of a musical theater, classical or popular song. Accompanist will be provided (please bring music). All students auditioning for The Hobbit and Twelfth Night should prepare a monologue of 1 minute or less. Callbacks for musicals: Callbacks for Spamalot and Peter Pan will begin at 4 PM on Monday, May 5 and end by 9:30 PM. All students who audition for these musicals should attend callbacks.

APRIL 14 – APRIL 20This exhibit features works from preschool students at the Lawrence Arts Center. Il-luminating the roots of imagination through fearless creativity, this exhibit offers a rare and inspiring glimpse of the origin of ingenuity and inspiration. The Arts-Based Preschool curriculum allows students the opportunity to work with professional artists, actors, dancers, and musicians; attend performances; and create in the ceramics studio. Through rich and varied experiences with the arts in combina-tion with a sound preschool education, creative confidence and innovative skills are clear in the work of these very young students.

Viewed consecutively after the Lawrence Arts Center Arts-based Preschool Exhibition, the exhibit is an enlightening window into the trajectory of artistic de-velopment and creative growth happening everyday in Lawrence.

This exhibition features five artists working to capture the unknown through abstracted natural forms in the medium of drawing. The group’s work questions the roots of perception and the observable universe, attempting to unravel reality through the act of drawing. While their processes range from obsessively analytical to the purely ex-pressive, these five artists oscillate between clarity and chaos, using the medium of drawing as a source of inquiry into matter, consciousness, and energy.

TUESDAY, APRIL 15 | 8PM (DOORS OPEN AT 7PM | $40 Welsh violist, pianist, composer, and singer John Cale’s singular career began in con-temporary classical music, where he was mentored by Aaron Copland and worked with John Cage and minimalists Terry Riley and La Monte Young in the 60s. He co-founded the influential band Velvet underground along with Lou Reed. In addition to his recordings with the Velvet underground, Cale has released numerous solo albums, includ-ing last year’s album, Shifty Adventures In Nookie Wood. Cale has produced seminal recordings including the Stooges 1969 debut, Patti Smith’s Horses (1975), Squeeze’s 1978 debut, and albums by Happy Mondays, Alejandro Escovedo, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Jesus Lizard, Jonathan Richman, among many others. He has recently collaborated with LCD Soundsystem, Danger Mouse, Laurel Halo and others.

ArtShares, Lawrence Artwork Pick-up Party May 24, 2014 | 1pm

The inaugural ArtShares, Lawrence is an art subscription service for locally produced art. The program, like many others around the world, offers a reasonably priced way to support artists and receive limited edition contemporary art. Much like Community Supported Agriculture, in which shareholders invest in a local farm and receive a monthly payout of fruits and vegetables, ArtShares asks shareholders to invest in original art.

Four artists receive commissions to create works of art for the program. Thirty “shares” will be made available to the public for $300 each. Share-holders will receive three limited edition works of art and two tickets to a performance at the Lawrence Arts Center. Investors receive their shares

at an exclusive Artwork Pick-up Party in May, 2014 where artists and patrons connect. All art is limited edition for 2014 ArtShares, Lawrence. 2014 ArtShares, Lawrence Artists include Stephen Johnson, Kristen Morland, Dave Van Hee, and Lawrence Arts Center ceramics artist-in-residence Kyla Strid.
