Franklin Fernandez, 36, made public hisintentions of running for the District D Councilorseat. Fernandez made the announcement, with hisfamily next to him, at Daisy G’s Restaurant lastSaturday, 28th of May, 2005.

“Man’s main responsibility is to serve his fellow-creature”, said Fernandez in his opening remarks.“That is why I am standing here today”, he said tomore than 40 sympathizers that crowded the smallplace.

Fernandez expressed concerns about the qualityof life, the conservation of the space we got left, theyouth and the small businesses of his district. “I willwork hard to make sure the businesses stay inLawrence. Our youth need something more than

Fernandez, a Dominican born, ismarried to a Puerto Rican woman. “In our house, wedon’t call ourselves Dominicans or Puerto Ricans,we are all one family and we feel the same waytoward all other cultures. We pray together, we spentquality time together, we call ourselvesLawrencians”, said Fernandez.

Mayor’s meetingslack substance

Lawrence Mayor Michael J. Sullivan held anotherNeighborhood Meeting on Tuesday, May 31, at the SouthLawrence East School. It was poorly attended and lacking

substance; perhaps that was the reason keeping people at home.Mayor Sullivan did the usual bragging about the transporta-

tion center and pot holes routine. He also gave an opportunity tocertain people to vent their anger at everything surrounding them.

Real issues affecting this community were not touched andthere was no mention of the budget which rumors have it that hasa deficit running rampant. Even John Lydon, a Mt. Vernon arearesident, was out of line accusing “illegal Dominicans runningfor office” to the applause of some attendees. Their behavior didnot deserve an answer.

Mr. Lydon went on to complain about people making money inreal estate as if something immoral. Those of us who are Americansby Choice can appreciate and admire the free enterprise in thiscountry, praising those who work hard and accumulate wealth.

Mayor Sullivan feels confident that good things are goingon in the city and he is reassured by the audience’s silence. He makes sure that there is no representation from the schooldepartment at these meetings in order to avoid any type ofcontroversy. Given the opportunity, people will have questionsabout wrongdoings in that city department but it is allowed tofunction as a separate government.

Carlos D. Matos

On Friday, May 20th, 2005 aroundnoon, dozens of seniors formed a longline at the Senior Center in Lawrence,to apply for the identification cardscheduled by the Triad Council.

The Triad program offers seniorswith a low or no cost photo I.D. for $0.96to be used as primary or secondaryidentification. Also, for $0.59, seniorscan acquire a refrigerator magnet whereto keep their personal vital medicalinformation.

For those seniors that possess anddrive their own car, for $0.97 Triad offersa Yellow Dot, a window sticker to beplaced in the car rear window to alertemergency personnel about specialmedical conditions of the driver, whichcan be found in the vehicle’s glovecompartment.

Triad also provides 911 cell phonesfor use in the home and while travelingfor use in EMERGENCY call only,FREE.

What is a TRIAD?A TRIAD is a partnership which

involves Senior Citizens, LawEnforcement Agencies (Sheriff / Police/ District Attorney) and Support /Protective Services (Councils on Aging/ Elder Services / Clergy, etc.) who agreeto work together. Their primary goals areto reduce the criminal victimization ofolder citizens and enhance the deliveryof services to this population. TRIADprovides the opportunity for an exchangeof information between lawenforcement, support services and seniorcitizens. It focuses on reducingunwarranted fear of crime and improvingthe quality of life for seniors. A TRIADis tailored to meet the needs of eachcommunity and is guided by a S. A. L.T. Council (Senior and LawEnforcement Together). TRIAD can bean integral part of community policing.

Why is TRIAD Necessary?Older Americans comprise the most

rapidly growing segment of thepopulation. One in every eightAmericans is already age 65 or older, atotal of more than 33.6 million. Increasedlife expectancy is leading to new issuesand problems for the criminal justicesystem as most communities experiencea dramatic increase in the number ofolder persons. Calls for services, crimes, victims are all changing.

How Did TRIAD Get Started? The American Association of

Retired Persons (AARP), theInternational Association of Chiefs ofPolice (IACP), and the National Sheriffs’Association (NSA) signed a cooperativeagreement in 1988 to work together toreduce both criminal victimization andunwarranted fear of crime affecting olderpersons. The three national organizationsagreed that Police Chiefs, Sheriffs, andSenior Citizens, working together coulddevise a better ways to reduce crimesagainst the elderly and enhance lawenforcements services to older citizens. This, they believe, is true communitypolicing, providing better service to apopulation, which appreciates, respectsand supports law enforcement.

With so much negativity surroundingthe Merrimack Valley I wanted to take thismoment to share a positive story for achange.

Allow me to introduce you to KianaSosa. She is a high honor student at theRobert Frost School in Lawrence who hasrecently learned she has been chosen toreceive the All-American Award for heroutstanding grades. As Captain of her PopWarner cheerleading team she was awardedthis scholarship and is the only female inLawrence, Massachusetts to receive thisaward. In addition to maintaining goodgrades she finds time to attend an afterschool program called Movement City andvolunteers at the Andover Children’sAcademy in Lawrence working with pre-school kids and the United Way ofMerrimack Valley.

But wait, there’s more. Kiana has alsobeen chosen as one of the few students toattend a summer camp called YoungScholars & College Prep Program atUMASS Lowell. One would think she is ateenager right? At the young age of twelveKiana has accomplished quite a bit in herlife.

There is a banquet that is being held inCalifornia in which Kiana will be presentedwith this scholarship from the Pop WarnerAssociation. We are working together tofind sponsors and raise money to send thisvery deserving child to this ceremony.

I would like to extend a request to each

of you to consider sponsoring her so she isable to attend this banquet and personallyreceive this award and be recognized for allher work. This bright, hardworking younglady desires the opportunity to attend thisPop Warner Banquet and receive her muchdeserved accolades.

As her parents we are honored our

Councilor Nicholas Kolofoles and his Vice President of the Tower Hill NeighborhoodAssociation, Keith Wlodyka present a $500.00 check to Mariah Markarewicz. Mr.Wlodyka and his family, own Tower Hill Variety and raised money by selling raffle ticketsfor a lottery tree for Mariah, who is a 7 grade Bruce School student. She was nominatedand selected as a student Ambassador for the United States of America People to PeopleProgram. Mariah is the only Lawrence Public School student to be honored by this onceand a lifetime opportunity and will travel 20 days through-out Europe. The neighborhoodassociation will be holding a giant yard sale on Saturday June 4, 2005 at 506 LowellStreet, 9am - 2pm. with a rain date of June 11, 2005.

Lawrence Youths at Workdaughter is being acknowledged and sharea sense of pride that she has accomplishedso much and feel she is entitled to attendthis banquet. In order for Kiana to attendthis banquet she requires not only thefinancial support of her family but also thecommunity. With the help of Lawrence PopWarner they are working on putting a Yard

Yo no soy tanbueno.

Distinguished Citizens Awards were presented to Senator Susan C. Tucker, LawrencePolice Chief, John J. Romero and Greater Lawrence Technical School Superintendent-Director Frank S. Vacirca, by , Eagle Scout, Troop #79; Larry Conlon and Michael Morris,Esq respectively, on May 19th, 2005, during a dinner held at the Windham Hotel, in Andover.Every year, The Yankee Clipper Council honors citizens who have improved the qualityof live in the Lawrence area, who will be excellent additions to the growing list ofdistinguished citizens that started in 1986. This year 3 honorees epitomized the personaland professional values, morals and character that are the mission of the Boys Scouts ofAmerica.

Distinguished Citizens Award

My name is Ryan Noonan and I am aproud Eagle Scout from Troop 79 in Andover,MA. I am currently Senior Patrol Leader andlove scouts. I have been involved in scoutsall my life. I started as a tiger cub in first gradeand never thought I would still be in scouting10 years later. I have learned many skills andhave met many people. Some of the skills Ihave learned will stay with me for the rest ofmy life.

When I started as a cub scout, I was tooyoung to understand the true value ofscouting. As a cub scout I did not learn toomuch, I did learn how to have fun with familyand friends. I remember the Pine WoodDerby’s whether they were using boats orcars. I also remember all the skits and daycamp. But fun was the ultimate goal.

When I got older I made scouts a priority.I started to really learn and obtain variousskills including basic first aid so we can beprepared to help others, knots and lashingsthat could save your life, community serviceand developing lifelong friendships. Myparents encouraged me through theadvancement program. I started to climb theranks and was actually told to slow down abit.

Reaching the rank of Eagle Scout was along journey. For my Eagle project Iconstructed an eighty-six foot brick walkway. That project taught me many important valuesin life. The most important skill I learned frommy Eagle project was how to communicatewith adults and how to work around obstacles. My original plan of reconstructing a park inLawrence fell through and I needed to startover. My next idea came to me from a contactI had made in Andover and a person whosupports scouting. Being in a community thatrecognizes and values Boy Scouts had helpedme with the project. Many donations werereceived just because the donor knew anEagle Scout or was an Eagle Scout. I was sosurprised when Tool Rental and MasonrySupply companies donated supplies andequipment just because it was an Eagle

Project. I never realized the power of an Eagleproject. I also learned a lot about masonryand that things don’t always go as planned. Igo to the pond and look at the walkway and Iam proud. Scouts taught me skills that willhelp me out forever.

I am presently the Senior patrol leaderof Troop 79 in Andover, MA. In the troopthere are approximately seventy-five scoutsand growing. That job as senior patrol leaderhas taught me many leadership skills and howto lead seventy-five plus kids. I attendedJunior Leadership Training at CampWahtutca, provided by our Yankee ClipperCouncil. The qualities of leadership that Ilearned were set the example, tone of voice, practice, focus on your tasks and goal setting.I am an active member of Order of the Arrow, for this position I was elected by my peers inmy troop.

My favorite part about scouts is the tripsand the fellowship. I love all the different tripsand all the cool things that we do in scouts. What I find so neat is that my friends aresitting around playing video games or goingto the movies, while I am on top of a 4000foot mountain. I know that scouting is notfor everyone but I am extremely happy that Imade the choice to stick with it and to advancethrough the ranks. In scouts you do nothingboring, you learn many things and become amore developed person. Scouting and troopsdepend on committed adults and the supportof an organization for it to be successful. Iwas lucky that I joined an active troop withmany adults who are supportive and eager tosee me succeed. I will work with future scoutsknowing what a valuable experience it wasfor me and encourage kids to stick with it-even when their schedules are too hectic forscouts.

Thank you for your financial support ofscouting without the help of people like youscouting would not be what it is today. Thanksalso to my parents and family for their loveand encouragement.

A Point of View

Bible 101 – Recipe for disaster? - Part II

By Paul V. Montesino, PhDEmail - English: [email protected]: [email protected]

You probablywonder why I amconcerned about apublic schoolcontroversy in such adistant place as Odessa,Texas. I will try to dealwith that question. Inmy previous article I

said: “It seems that now some schoolsystems in our country-Odessa, Texas, wasin the news most recently-want to start againoffering “elective” courses about the Bible.”

I also said that “I made the decision tovisit the city. Not actually or physicallymind you, but I went through the next bestthing I could find: The Internet.” By now,you probably know me very well and youknow also that I don’t get involved in asubject unless there is gold to be minedthere. So here it goes.

Please don’t get me wrong. I am notlike the President of the U.S. Senate Dr. BillFrist, MD., who can make a diagnostic of apatient by simply watching the behavior ofthe distant person on a tape. I am not thatgood. And I respect that city enough tobelieve I need to visit or live there for sometime before I can make an honest and fairassessment of what and who they are.

My visit is basically a vital statisticanalysis reported in their web site http://www.Odessa.com. You can click, too. Now,I am sure the majority of the folks who livethere are decent hard working people. Theyhave a population of 192,000 orthereabouts, 44% of which are Hispanic, 4%black. Now, 44% of 192,000 areapproximately 85,000, and a city with sucha diverse group of people living asneighbors has to be acknowledged for theircultural sensitivity. They have more Spanishspeaking individuals than Lawrence has inall of its inhabitants combined. So here ismy applause: Hear! Hear! Yet, we have toget deeper into the facts.

Why the school board of Odessa thinksthat their high school students need theBible in addition to religious Sunday schoolto interpret American History is a mysteryto me. I doubt very much that their preachersare ignorant of what makes America tick. I

presume that eventually those students willgo to college, where their most preciousbeliefs about life and other issues will beput to the test and when many may tumbledown. That is where they will need theentire Bible they can muster if they want toremain faithful to their core beliefs. Rightnow what the students of that city and everyother American city needs are exposure anddedication to science so that more jobs inthe new technologies are not lost to othercountries and shores like China and India. These students can hang to their religiousbeliefs. After all those beliefs have beenaround for literally thousands of years andare not going away anytime soon, trust me.

The sciences, however, like water, aredisappearing and dissolving between ourfingers as we speak. Praying is an intimatepersonal experience, but praying alone willnot help those young folks to get a job whenit comes time to prove their skills. We havean old saying in our Spanish countries thatreads: “A Dios rogando y con el mazodando.” Translation: “While you pray for amiracle do what you can to help yourself”(Simon and Schuster ’s InternationalSpanish-English dictionary-Second Edition,© 1973.) There is nothing heretic with thatstatement if you ask me.

There are other facts about Odessa. The“Odessa American” is the only dailynewspaper in Odessa. That can be a problemfolks. When you have only one newspaper,it is difficult for the population to know howmuch of what is published is filtered. Andthat newspaper covers everything in sight, including religion, in a big way. So I wonderwhat tack the editorial pages will take whenit comes time to report objectively whatgoes on in the public school controversy.Do you have a similar feeling when you hearlocal newspapers in Lawrence complainingabout the Eagle-Tribune’s power?

I just want to comment about newsrecently published in the web pages of thisOdessa newspaper. It seems that a fellow, aLatino as a matter of fact, “has recentlytraded in the shops, restaurants and theatersof two cities for a flock of goats, gardenand a solitary cell. Three weeks ago, thisman temporarily set aside his urban digs inWest Odessa for a quiet cabin at the MountCarmel Hermitage Monastery in Christoval,Texas, to see if the solitary life was for him.“I just wanted to read the Bible and pray,”

said the man, “I was just interested in thatlifestyle.” Praise the Lord! Is it reallysurprising that the school board of this townis committed to the biblical teaching in theirmidst? But hold your horses. There is more.

George Walker Bush –you know thename- was born on July 6, 1946, in NewHaven, Connecticut, the eldest son ofPresident George Bush, who was then stilla student at Yale. In 1948, the family movedto Odessa, Texas, where the senior Bushwent to work in the oil business. GeorgeW., also known as just “W” to distinguishhim from his father, grew up mainly inMidland, Texas, and Houston and laterattended two of his father’s alma maters,Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., andYale. Now, the President is a man of faithwithout doubt and he carries that faith onhis sleeve. Is it any wonder that his formerneighbors now part of the school board arepreaching the educational values of thefavorite subject of one of their mostprestigious citizens?

But there is another interesting fact thatappears in the Odessa Chamber ofCommerce’s web site home page thatcaught my alert eye. Read this please: “ThePermian Basin, geologic home to Odessaand a number of nearby cities, isapproximately 250 miles long and 300 mileswide. The basin was formed during thePermian Period, the final portion of thePaleozoic Period (approximately 280million years ago). At one time, the basinwas an ocean filled with marine life andplants. As the ocean dried up, the decayingplants and animals eventually helped formthe gigantic pools of oil and gas that arestill being taken from the basin.”Translation: evolution created oil.

Why do I find this note so interesting?Well, if the Permian Period happenedapproximately 280 million years ago and itwas “the final portion of the PaleozoicPeriod,” this Paleozoic Period must havebeen really, really old. If you go to theschool board meetings in Odessa and listento those fundamentalists who propose thebiblical “rejuvenation” of their curriculum,

Ellen Bahan will be having akick off/fundraiser party onWednesday, June 8, 2005from 6-PM at the VFW onRiver Road in Methuen.

Mayor Michael J. Sullivan and theCity of Lawrence are proud to announcethe 3rd annual “Lawrence CelebrationRegatta” will return on Saturday, June 11,2005, from 9 – 2:30 p.m. at the BasharaBoathouse at 1 Eaton Street. The BasharaBoathouse is conveniently located nearRoute 495 and 93.

In 2004, the 2nd year of the regatta, athletic participation increased by 60%with 400 athletes from around the U.S.participating in this USRowing sanctionedevent. In years past, regattas were a partof Lawrence’s history. Mayor Michael J.Sullivan revived the event, after 50 yearsof silence, in 2002. “Lawrence hasnumerous natural resources, including theMerrimack River where the regatta is held.It made sense to bring back this communityevent for our residents and to showcase

you will hear them talking about a worldthat was created a mere few thousand yearsago, five or six perhaps. How can they sitin those meetings and pass judgment onthose who would vouch for evolution whiletheir own web site talks about millions ofyears are beyond my limitedcomprehension. The President of the UnitedStates, by the way, in his public speeches, has said that it is a “fact” that “the jury isstill out about the theory of evolution.” NeedI say more?

That statement, of course, is meant tosatisfy those who fear and oppose theevolutionary concept. This article is not atreatise on evolution. I am not a biologistor a paleontologist, but as far as I amconcerned, don’t count me as one of thosejurors or experts still out. Even such adistinguished religious figure as Pope JohnPaul II, in his writings, had acknowledgedthe possibility that evolution could be God’sway to do life work. The controversy willnever go away. We will never accept thefact that thousands of years ago we had apegreat, great, great-something parents.

I have no problem with that intriguingnotion though. I don’t even know who myrecent great-great grandparents were, howthey felt, how much good or evil they did. That was their problem, not mine. If I don’tcome from monkeys that means I am reallyimperfect. If the opposite is true, all I haveto say is: You have come a long way baby.Who would have told that ape in my longgone past, as he hung from a tree enjoyinga late banana supper, that one of hisdescendants would some day dress as apeacock to accept a doctoral degree incomputer science in education? And aboveall, would he have cared? And that is mypoint of view today.

what we have to offer.” In 2005, athleteswill once again participate in the 3rd annualregatta from around the nation.

In the future we hope that youcontinue to give us the opportunity todeliver our message to me hardworkingcommunity of Lawrence, which deserveour respect and to which we owe thepositions we enjoy in this community.

Thank You once again for yourpresence here today and we hope that ouractive participation in electing CarlosMatos as Mayor is viewed as a positivestep in favor of the development of ourcommunity and under no circumstance asdivisive or adversarial. We are an integralpart of this community and as such we stepup to the plate and lead.

Carlos D. Matos

On behalf of the officers andmembers of Laborers Local 175 and theMerrimack Valley Building TradesCouncil I consider it an honor andprivilege to endorse my friend CarlosMatos for Mayor of this great City ofLawrence. This is a critical time for thecity and this election is about unifyingand putting the residents of Lawrencefirst. When the city is still sufferingfrom double digit unemployment ratesand the current mayor is using hisinfluence to ensure that local residentsand ordinances that would put them towork are not enforced it is a clear signthat it is time for a change in leadershipfor Lawrence. Carlos has stood inopposition to this administration to ensurethat local residents represent a mere 30percent of the work force while the

current Mayor has excluded it from bids.Carlos is the only candidate that will ensurelocal opportunities for the residents ofLawrence and has put employing residentsas a top priority.

He will have local government that isopen and transparent with no back roomdeals. His administration will beresponsive to the entire community andprovide hope and opportunity to theworking men and women of Lawrence.Carlos Matos will ensure that the residentswill be provided work opportunities sothey may provide for their families and betreated with the respect and dignity theydeserve. With his leadership skills Carloswill bring all segments of the communitytogether to make Lawrence a place of hopeand opportunity for all residents.

Tower Hill Wins the Jr.League Title In 1956

It’s 1956 andTower Hill is thevisiting team at thePelham St. field inMethuen. Thehome team in thisJunior Leaguec h a m p i o n s h i pseries is thedefending champs.

A large crowd was on hand to watch theLawrencians try to climb what seemed aninsurmountable hill. This series is the best 3out of five and Tower Hill gets the first win inthe first game to stun the champs. This is abig win for the local kids. After game two endsin a tie 8/8, the teams come back with a 5/5

tie both games called for darkness. TOWERHill squeaks out 2/0 win in the next meetingand the stage is set for the 5th and final gameand all the marbles and bragging rights.

Methuen had finished 1st in the leagueand were sending Dickie Lynch to the mound.Dick had a blazing fastball and could snap ofa fine curve. He’s now retired after a finecareer at Methuen High School and wouldlater become a big fast pitch softball stararound the area. Some of his home runs arestill discussed to this day. Now a Raytheonretiree he can be seen occasionally havinglunch at the former Mama Mary’s.

Cliffy Haller was at first CarmenDiAdamo was the shortstop. Yes, he’s Atty.DiAdamo today and as good as he was at 15years old his best sport days were yet to comeat Methuen High School and later at ColgateUniversity. Dave Miller was at third and also

became a fine softball player for the ConcordiaClub. He’s a golfer these days at the MerrimacCountry Club. Larry waite was the catcherand a good one. In the outfield were futurehigh school stars Maury Doyle, John Woronkaand future barber and Methuen Hall of FamerBernie Licarta, his shop is still being run byhis cousin Carmine at the same site onLawrence St. Bernie left us much too young, but any Methuen sports fan will put him upthere with the best that ever played for theRangers.

Tower Hill finished the regular season in2nd place and their choice to go to the moundwas the wily and versatile RogerDamphousse. Roger later play softball in theCity League after becoming a great player atCentral Catholic and later at MerrimackCollege a great scorer at both schools he wasshooting from 3 point range before there wasa 3 point rule else he would of at least doubledhis high point total. Bernie Smith was thecatcher and he and his brother Howie, fineathletes. Howie is a dentist these days and heand Bernie were stars at the Mullaney Parkthat has disappeared today with the arrival ofthe Guilmette School.

Big Hank Koza was at first and hebecame a Central Catholic hoopster and laterenjoyed a long teaching career in Chelmsford. He was known as a Sargeant at the LawrencePolice Department before his retirement butin 1956 he was the starting shortstop on thisteam as they chased the title. Tony Laurenzawas the kids’ version of Derek Jeeter. BarneyBouchard was at the hot corner and in lateryears he became a top bowler and starred inmany leagues at the now long gone FrenchSocial Lanes or alleys as we called them inthose days. Buddy Erban was at 2nd and RennyHulme, Oulette and Brian McCarthy patrolledthe digs.

The Lawrencians start fast with one outBouchard works Lynch for a walk, with oneout Damphousse squares to bunt a sacrificeand Methuen throws the ball away and Barneyrunning on the pitch scores the games firstrun. Bernie Smith pops up and Koza grabs aLynch hummer and drills over third basescoring Damphousse who with 2 down wasrunning on the pitch. In the second Oulettereaches on an error and the future Lawrencecop Laurenza is all over a fastball and drills itover the centerfielder’s head for a double withOulette scoring easily. Methuen answers intheir half of the second with one run as theever dangerous Dickie Lynch, even at that age(15) steps in Damphousse pitching, verycarefully issues a walk.

Dave Miller a ringing single and Licartaearns a base on balls and the bases are loaded;no outs. The thin Tower Hill right-handertakes a deep breath and gets Woronka on aninfield pop up. Catcher Smith and thirdbaseman Bouchard go to the mound to talk totheir pitcher and now he’s ready to pitch toHaller. He gets him to foul off a pitch andmisses with two low pitches a curve for acalled strike, two before blazing a wickedfastball by him, two outs and the clutch hittingDiAdamo is digging in at the plate. A long flyball goes foul, a nubber into the dirt foul andhere comes a mean curve and Carmen swingsand misses for strike three.

Methuen doesn’t know it now but that’sall the damage Damphousse and his mates willallow in this contest. Lynch only gave up 4hits in the game but his team left 14 men onbase to make him the hard luck loser on thisday. Roger surrendered 5 hits but struck out6, especially in the clutch when most needed.

Tower Hill captured the Junior LeaguePlayoff title in 1956 with a 5-1 win overMethuen.

Otis, Domestic Short Hair-black, Age: Adult, Sex: Neutered MaleI’m Otis and I am looking for a home where I can spend therest of my life. I’ve been on the move a lot lately and I’dreally like to put down some roots. A long time ago I was astray. I was taken in by a wonderful woman, but now she is tooold to take care of me. I went to live with her daughter, but herhusband is allergic to me. So here I am. I am used to living withanother cat and wouldn’t mind having a new feline companionin my new home. I am friendly and playful—wands are myfavorite toys. I enjoy attention and like to have lap and pettingtime. I also have a bit of a hair fetish and like to knead your hair and neck. I give the bestmassages around—really! How many people can say they have a cat that does that?

Chloe & CJ, Age: 2 years old, Sex: SpayedFemalesLook at this spunky and curious pair! They are the bestof friends looking for a new place to live together forever.Their ideal home would be one with lots of attention, abig roomy cage and lots of time outside the cage toexplore. If you have been searching for a couple of friendsto complete your loving home, you may have found them!

Cinnamon, Dilute Tortoiseshell, Domestic Medium Hair, Age: 2 years,Sex: Spayed FemaleCinnamon is a 2 and a half year old spayed female. She issuper affectionate and an “in your face” kind of girl. Shewould love to keep you company all day long and wouldmake a great home office companion-she’s very helpfulwith the keyboard....................... Cinnamon enjoysspending her time indoors and is looking for a homewithout dogs. She loves to be held and picked up but may,on occasion, scratch furniture that doesn’t belong to her. She is a wonderful cat who islooking for someone to open their home and their heart to her!!!

Clarissa, Domestic Short Hair - gray and white, Age:Adult, Sex: Spayed FemaleCan you believe such a beauty as me was a stray? I am asweet girl who can be a bit on the shy side at times. I justneed some love and understanding to blossom into the girl Iknow I can be. I would prefer to go to a home without otheranimals, and since I have no known history an older homewould probably increase my chances of success. If you arelooking for a lifelong companion to nurture and grow with,I may be the one for you!

Tigger, Domestic Long Hair - orange and white, Age: 2 and a half years,Sex: Neutered MaleI’m Tigger. I want to find someone who will want me to spendlots of time inside with them, someone who will play with meand pet me, but who will respect that I am not really a lap cat.We will have to work out brushing techniques too. I know, it’snecessary given my beautiful mane of fur, but that doesn’t meanI have to like it. I DO like other cats, and would be happy toshare my new home with other feline friends. (I used to live withtwo other cats.) I’m really a great cat when you get to know me.Think Harrison Ford—gruff on the outside, marshmallow in themiddle and handsome all over!

Runner, Domestic Short Hair, Brown Tiger, Age: 5 yearsold, Sex: Neutered MaleRunner is a handsome boy who has lived indoors his whole life. He isa social, friendly cat who even visits with strangers and children in thehome. Although he is great with people, he doesn’t really care forother cats. Runner enjoys playing with mice toys and basking in thesun. If you are interested in Runner, also take into consideration thathe is more active in the evening and might not fit in well with thosewho go to bed early.

Mayor James J. Fiorentini, as part ofhis ongoing effort to streamline permittingin the City of Haverhill, today proposedstreamlining a permit for antique auctions.

Under the current rules, if an antiquecompany wishes to auction off antiques theymust obtain a separate permit for eachauction. If an antique company wishes tohave an antiques auction every week theymust obtain 52 separate licenses requiring52 separate trips to city hall, 52 applications.

“A company which was planning to aweekly auction of antiques indicated to methat our current permitting laws basicallyprevented them from doing business in thecity,” said Fiorentini. “The most importantthing we can do to bring more business to

Fiorentini further commented: “This ispart of my ongoing effort to speed uppermits in the city. We have speeded upthe issue on some common victualler’spermits, the issuance of death certificatesto attorneys; we have made it possible topay tax bills, wastewater bills and water billsonline. Greater Lawrence Students Take Nine Medals at StateSkillsUSA Competition

ANDOVER— Eileen Jeans, who islegally blind, will experience increasedmobility thanks to a project undertaken bystudents at Greater Lawrence TechnicalSchool, Andover. They are seniors RobertBruner (Telecommunications), WillyCordero (Electronics), Samantha Gutierrez(Telecommunications), James LaPlante(Electronics), Elias Rodriguez(Electronics), and Joseph Zahareais(Machine Technology/CAD). Physicsinstructor Matthew Flood served as theproject’s advisor.

Ms. Jeans, 78, can see shadows undergood lighting conditions, helping her tomove about safely, but has difficulty whenit is dark. Six Greater Lawrence studentshave addressed that problem by building awalker with headlamps, which they havedubbed “Street Glow.”

The Greater Lawrence TechnicalSchool team exhibited their project at theannual Assistive Technology Design fairhosted by the University of MassachusettsLowell on Saturday, May 21, whichattracted 34 different projects.

One of Five Awards Greater Lawrence submitted one of

the five projects that were given specialrecognition, with medals and plaquespresented to the students, who gave livedemonstrations detailing the process and theresults.

The fair gives area high school studentsan opportunity to tackle real-worldengineering design problems aimed athelping people with disabilities or specialneeds. The event attracted 34 registeredprojects; Greater Lawrence was the onlyvocational-technical high school at theevent.

To create the specialized walker,Greater Lawrence Tech students used theirtechnical expertise to make a battery packout of rechargeable AA batteries to supplypower to the headlamps, to do the necessarywiring, and to mount the project on thewalker. Along the way, they gained designexperience, and perhaps most importantly, the experience of working with a client. Thestudents met with Ms. Jeans, Matt Flood’sgrandmother, early in the project to discussideas, and then visited her with a prototypeto get her feedback before completion.

Cooperation and Collaboration “The great thing is, students from all

different career areas worked on theproject,” Mr. Flood said. “I have three fromElectronics, so they built the battery pack, and did a lot of the wiring. The students

from Telecommunications madea PowerPoint presentation for thefair, and the student from MachineTechnology machined a box outof plastic to house the apparatus, and also built brackets to mountthe headlamps on the walker.”

The students received helpwith supplies from theAutomotive career area, and alsofrom Cosmetology, whichprovided hair dryers for shrink-wrapping.

To complete the project, thestudents organized themselves asa mini-corporation with roles likeProject Manager, Designer, andAccountant.

“They all had specificduties,” Mr. Flood said. “It madethem work as a team, and itshowed them how a real companyworks when it comes to designingproducts.”

More than 30 teams willshowcase their design projects atthe Assistive Technology Fair.Past projects have included amodified TV remote control for agirl with cerebral palsy, anadjustable telephone supportmounted on a wheelchair, and aradio transmission device used toget the attention of a deaf student.

“Three” seemed to be themagic number for students atGreater Lawrence TechnicalSchool, Andover, whocompeted at MassachusettsSkillsUSA this past weekendand came home with threegold, three silver and threebronze medals. Each medalwas for a team event, and eachof the three teams had threemembers.

Gold medal winnersinclude the CommunityService team of GloriluzRosario, Raphael Sanquintin, and Kirssi Gonzalez, who havebeen volunteering at IronstoneFarm in Andover, where thestudents serve as horsehandlers or “sidewalkers” fordisabled children. Theircompetition included aPowerPoint presentation outlining theactivities of not only the team trio, but alsothe approximately 150 Greater LawrenceTech students who have been involved inthe project, from serving as sidewalkers tomaking horse blankets to constructing ahandicapped access ramp with partialfunding from the Andover EducationalImprovement Association.

National ContendersFor their accomplishment, the GLTS

gold-medal team will represent

Massachusetts at the SkillsUSA NationalLeadership and Skills Conference in KansasCity, Missouri June 20-24. In 2004, 57teams competed nationally and the GreaterLawrence team (with one returning memberand a different project) came home withsilver medals. The present team is, ofcourse, vying for gold in 2005.Competing for the first time this year, theTech Prep Showcase team of Ashley Artis,Josselinda Branford, and Diana Santiagogave an oral presentation on the skills theyused in the Fashion/Interior Design program

to design and provide placemats for theMeals on Wheels program during theChristmas holiday period, and won silvermedals for their efforts.

In Automated Manufacturing, HectorBrito, Emerlyn Tavarez, and Joe Zahareaiswon third place and bronze medals for theirall-day project that combined technicalexpertise with teamwork. They made aCAD drawing from a sketch of a part, created a MasterCAM program, andproduced the part on a CNC millingmachine. They qualified for statecompetition by taking silver medals in thedistrict contest, which was a written testabout their technical skill area.

Best of ShowIn addition, Marcia Castillo (Metal

Fabrication) used ¼-inch steel to create a2-person butterfly design garden chair thattook the Best of Show award at Techspo,an exhibition of student work from manyof the participating schools. There wereabout 30 entries in Techspo, includingseveral by GLTS students in GraphicCommunications.

Other GLTS state-level competitorsincluded Coreen Carter, Customer Service, and Elias Rodriguez, ElectronicApplications. Kendra Fantuzzi, ShirleyPizarro, and Raiffi Castillo served as votingdelegates, attending business sessions of thestatewide organization, participating incampaigns for state officers, and voting inthe new slate of state leaders.

Linda Cote and Ilene Karnow serve asco-advisors of the GLTS SkillsUSA chapter. In addition to the chapter advisors, Tech

Prep Coordinator Kathy Howeaccompanied the group to the state event.

100 Percent ChapterGreater Lawrence Technical School

was also recognized in a special receptionas one of fifteen schools in theCommonwealth who have become “totalparticipation” schools this year, or “100percent membership chapters.” This meansthat every student in the school isautomatically a SkillsUSA member, and hasaccess to leadership development programsand competition opportunities. A receptionon Friday evening recognized the 100percent schools.

Massachusetts has the third largestSkillsUSA membership in the country.SkillsUSA is the only student organizationwith a certification program for statedirectors. At the 100 percent membershipceremony, Massachusetts State DirectorKaren Ward was presented with hercertification, earned in December 2004.

At the state conference, students fromcareer and technical education programsthroughout the Commonwealth participatedin hands-on competition in 78 categories, from carpentry to computers and from dieselmechanics to desktop publishing, alongwith leadership events and competitions. The winners were announced at Olympic-style ceremonies on Saturday, April 30 atthe Best Western Royal Plaza Trade Centerin Marlboro. About 1500 students from allover Massachusetts participated; about 375businesses and industries in Massachusettssupport SkillsUSA.
