INTRODUCTION What is a lay?• Lengths of fabric, several plies high, which have been

spread on a cutting table ready for cutting are referred to as lays.

• The fabric is subsequently cut in accordance with a cutting plan which is usually designed to optimise material utilisation.

Laying up is the process of spreading lengths of fabric on a cutting table to make a lay

Page 3: Lay Planning

SPREADING FABRICTwo types of methods to make lay by spreading fabrics:1. Manual methods• Fully Hand• Hand spreading with hook• Hand spreading with

spreading track

2. Mechanical methods• Semi Automatic spreading• Fully Automatic spreading

TYPES OF FABRIC LAYAccording to the construction, fabric lay is of two types. These are:1. Straight lay2. Stepped layAccording to the direction of spreading fabric, lay is of three types. These are:1. From right to left2. From right to right3. Zigzag lay

TYPES OF FABRIC LAY

1.a) Straight Lay:• Every ply is placed

according to the marker length (full length of marker is taken).

• It is most common and most of the garments are used this type of lay. Straight Lay

Page 6: Lay Planning

TYPES OF FABRIC LAY1.b) Stepped Lay:• Every ply is not spread according to the full length of marker

but in a stepped manner.• Stepped Lay is multiple lay in which groups of layers have

different lengths generally used for getting best utilization and consumption of fabric.

Stepped Lay

TYPES OF FABRIC LAY

2.a) From Right to Left:• More wide and open.• Always spread in the same direction.

Right to Left Lay

Page 8: Lay Planning

TYPES OF FABRIC LAY2.b) From right to right:• Also wide and open.• Special spreading

machines needed to make this lay.

• Spread in both directions.

Right to Right Lay

Page 9: Lay Planning

TYPES OF FABRIC LAY2.c) Zigzag Lay: • Spread without cutting from

one end to the other according to the marker length.

• Continuous process.• More used in garments

manufacturing industries.• Disadvantage: Creates

problem in asymmetric fabric. Zigzag Lay

TYPES OF FABRIC LAYBased on the number of fabric layers, lay can also be classified as:3.a) Single Ply: Single layer of fabric generally to make samples.3.b) Multiple Ply: Number of fabric layers stacked on one top of the other.

LAY PLANNING• Lay plan is a plan in a

garment involving making of the lay height, lay length, colour mix, selection of fabric pieces to be cut, and the batches from which the fabric is to be used. Lay Planning

LAY PLANNING

• It is the basis of managing cutting room labor and table space.

• Spreading and cutting schedules are affected by table length, type of equipment, spread length, spreading time, and cutting time.

HOW LAY PLANNING IS DONE ON COMPUTER

• The lay plan can be done on the computer screen and pieces can be moved around easily.

• When the final version is done, this is printed out on paper slightly less wider than the fabric and using marker stick, it is attached to the top layer of the fabric.

• Fabric is clamped all the way around and the cutter can now use the band saw to cut pieces out.

IMPORTANCE OF LAY PLANNING

• To help insure that materials and components are available

• To meet delivery dates• Efficiency of manufacture in

terms of cost• To ensure speed• To have an order of work• To take into consideration

the machinery available and the skill of the labour force.

TYPES OF LAY PLANNING

1. Half Garment Lay:• When cutting out a single product, it is usual to fold the fabric in

half so that the right and left sides of the garment are cut out together. Right side patterns are generally used. This is half garment lay.

• Used for folded or tubular fabrics and face to face spreads.

TYPES OF LAY PLANNING

2. Whole Garment Lay:• In this type of lay, all of

the garment pieces, that is, left and right sides, are included in the lay.

• Used generally for open width fabrics.

Whole Garment Lay

TYPES OF LAY PLANNING3. Single Size Lay:• All the pieces of a single

size are included.• Advantage: Order

planning and laying up fabric becomes easier.

• Disadvantage: More material consumption as compared to multi-size lays.

TYPES OF LAY PLANNING4. Multi-Size Lays:i) Sectional Lay:• Made in a minimum of two perfectly rectangular sections.• Each section contains all the pieces for a particular size.• Adjacent sections may or may not be the same size.

Sectional Lay

Page 19: Lay Planning

TYPES OF LAY PLANNINGii) Interlocking Lay:• Two or more sections,

generally of different sizes, but the sections are not necessarily perfectly rectangular.

• Parts in different sections may overlap at borders.

• Sections are placed one after the other.

Interlocking Lay

Page 20: Lay Planning

TYPES OF LAY PLANNINGiii) Mixed multi-size lay:• No distinct sections.• Pieces for different

garment sizes are mixed up.

• This lay plan normally gives the best material utilization.

Mixed Multi-Size Lay

CONCLUSION• The purpose of a lay plan is to use fabric efficiently.• A lay plan shows how the pattern pieces should be

placed on the fabric in the most cost effective manner.

• In the clothing manufacturing industry, it is essential that the manufacturer uses fabric as efficiently as possible to keep manufacturing costs down to enable them to have a profitable business.
