Definition The process of organizing information into related groupings
in order to manage complexity and reinforce relationships in the information (Lidwell 146)
Simplified: Organizing groups of information in a way that presents certain groups at different times
Two Dimensional Layering Separating information into two layers such that only one
layer can be viewed at a time (Lidwell 146).
These layers can either be linear so that it reads from left to right or non-linear in a hierarchal form (Lidwell 146).
Three Dimensional Layering Separating information into layers such that several layers
can be viewed at one time (Lidwell 146).
These layers can be either transparent such as temperature on a map or opaque like a pop up window on the computer (Lidwell 146).
Should be used primarily to elaborate the information without having to switch contexts (Lidwell 146).

Takeaways Use two dimensional layering to manage complex or
sequential ideas.
Three dimensional layering should be used to show information without switching contexts.
Opaque layering should emphasize information while transparent layers should highlight relationships.
