Reliability Project – Ross Shaft Renovation
Work has progressed to 4,772 level (95% complete)
08.15.17 E McCluskey| LBNF Update6
• Ross Shaft constructed in
1930s. Legacy shaft
infrastructure cannot support
the structural loads and duty
cycle needed for LBNF, thus
rehabilitation was initiated in
2012 to modernize the shaft.
• Work is very close to the
bottom of the shaft – gets
more complicated as it
approaches bottom opening
and below the 4850L
• Extending completion due to
change in crew schedules
LBNF
Other Reliability Projects near-term
08.15.17 E McCluskey| LBNF Update7
• Ground Support – East/West Access
- Ground support deteriorated due to age and
flooding of the mine after shutdown.
- West and East Lab Access drifts will be
completely bolted to provide safe passage for
utilities and logistics.
• Oro Hondo Fan replacement
- Main exhaust fan – variable frequency drive
obsolete and starting to be problematic
- If fails, shuts down diesel equipment
underground
• Hoist Clutches & Brakes and Variable
Speed Drives
- Replace 1930’s technology that doesn’t meet
code and risks shaft operation and potentially
personnel safety
- Improve energy efficiency
Status:
• Underway
• Complete Dec 17
Status:
• Working to
accelerate
replacement plan to
ASAP
Status:
• In planning
• Start Jan 18
• Phased thru Feb 19

FSCF Pre-excavation Construction Status
08.15.17 E McCluskey| LBNF Update8
• Construction to start by CM/GC in early 2018 (pending DOE appropriation)
- Underground rock handling (ore passes, skip loading, temporary grizzly, rock spill collection system)
- Rock crushing system
- Installing surface pipe conveyor to open cut
- Ross headframe reinforcement
- Shaft utilities: fiber optic and power cables, water and gas piping
- Electrical service on the surface to the shaft
• Surface rock conveyor ordered June 2017 -should be ready for installation late summer 2018

Final FSCF Design for Excavation & Building/Site
Infrastructure
08.15.17 E McCluskey| LBNF Update9
• Final design has two scope elements: main excavation (EXC),
and buildings/site infrastructure (BSI)
- Deliverables planned at 30%, 60%, 90%, and 100% of final design
• FD and cryo will participate in weekly design meetings with A/E
• Provides defined points for stakeholder review
• CM/GC provides independent cost/schedule estimates & constructability
reviews
- Design is under configuration control; all proposed changes are
evaluated for cost and schedule impact
LBNF
Cryogenic Systems Design Status
08.15.17 E McCluskey| LBNF Update10
• LN2 system: working on solicitation for design-fab-install
contract for this system
• Proximity Cryogenics on the mezzanine and LAr/GAr purification
system in Central Utility Cavern:
- Joint effort of Fermilab and CERN (Proxy cryo on mezzanine only).
- Developing work packages and understanding how to engage
possible partners.

LBNF
• LBNF and DUNE have worked to better define penetrations needed for
FD and cryogenic systems
• Third evolution of CERN design for the steel structure design of cryostat
#1 accommodates single-phase detector penetrations
• CERN working to initiate design contract with membrane cryostat
designer, GTT, by early 2018
Cryostat Design Status
08.15.17 E McCluskey| LBNF Update11
• LBNF is holding
independent design
review of steel structure
next week at SURF
LBNF
Beamline/NSCF Status
08.15.17 E McCluskey| LBNF Update12
- Requires 4 (vs. 2) interaction length target and 3 (vs. 2) magnetic horns.
- Collaborating with RAL on the conceptual design of the optimized target
and its mounting in the first horn.
- LBNF is holding Beam Optimization Review to evaluate the conceptual
design, cost, and schedule on 5-6 October.
- EFIG will discuss incorporation of this design into the LBNF/DUNE plan
soon thereafter.
- Decision process described in DocDB 1900.
• Optimizing target and
focusing horns for better
sensitivity to CP
violation.
LBNF
Beamline/NSCF Status
08.15.17 E McCluskey| LBNF Update13
• Collaboration with IHEP/China:
- Testing prototype corrector magnet from IHEP at Fermilab
- Discussing additional collaboration on other beamline systems, e.g.
decay pipe beam window
• Collaboration with KEK – interested in supporting beamline,
discussions underway
LBNF is very interested in engaging with all partners who
might be interested in participating in design and
construction of the beam.
Please contact Elaine McCluskey and/or Vaia Papadimitriou.
