남북한의갈등이계속되는지금, 나는독일이수도인베를린을떠올린다.

한국처럼둘로나뉘었던베를린은45년후통일을이루고, 현재세계에서

가장창조적인예술의도시로불리고있다. 그래서베를린에기대해본다.

우리의미래에대한해답을이곳에서찾을수있지않을까하고.

As the two Koreas remain in conflict, I think ofGermany’s capital Berlin. Once a divided city like theKoreas, Berlin achieved unification after 45 years of

separation, and now claims to be a grand city of arts. Sonow I project my hopes onto this city, thinking it mayperhaps hold the answer to the future of my country.



지난10월3일, 독일통일20주년행사가베를린에서열렸다. 1989년, 브란덴부

르크문의양옆으로서있던두꺼운장벽이자유와평화, 화합을원하던국민들의

손에의해허물어지며통일이이루어진곳. 그가슴뛰는역사의현장을둘러보기

위해독일은물론세계곳곳에서매년약850만명의여행객들이베를린을찾는다.

+‘여행’때문에무너진베를린장벽

1989년11월9일, 베를린장벽이무너진것은굉장히극적이었다. 계속된경제난

으로동독시민들의시위가과열되자동독정부는이들을달래기위해서방에대한

여행자유화를허락하기로했다. 이에대한기자회견이생방송으로중계되었는데

한이탈리아기자가그효력이언제부터발행하는지를물었다. 서기장은엉겁결에

“지금부터?”라고대답했고이를본동독과서독시민들이여행을하겠다며장벽으

로달려가이를허물어버린것이다.

베를린시는통일의역사를둘러보는다양한여행코스, 패키지등을알차게꾸

려놓았다. 가장대표적인것은베를린장벽을뜻하는베를리너마우어Berliner Mauer

를따라걷는코스다. 이코스는일요일최대벼룩시장으로유명한마우어파크

Mauerpark에서부터베를린장벽의흔적이남아있는베르나우어거리, 과거동서독

의검문소역할을했던체크포인트찰리Checkpoint Charlie, 장벽의일부에세계118명

Events to commemorate the 20th anniver-

sary of German unification were held on

October 3rd last year. In 1989, unification

rapidly came as the thick wall on both sides of

the Brandenburg Gate was taken down by the

people who wished for freedom, peace, and

unity. About 8 million visitors from Germany

and beyond come to Berlin to witness the

heart-throbbing site of history.

‘Travel’ Took Down the Walls

On November 9th, 1989, the collapse of the

Berlin Wall was very dramatic. When pro-

longed economic hardships took more and

more East Germans to the streets to protest, the

East German government decided to lift restric-

tions on travelling to the West to pacify the dis-

contented. When the press conference about

this decision was aired live, an Italian journalist

asked when the new decision would take effect.

Unprepared, the general secretary said, “Start-

ing now?” and upon seeing this broadcast, both

East and West Germans rushed to take down the

wall to travel to the either side.

Berlin offers an array of tour courses and

packages to glimpse the history of German uni-

fication. The most notable of all is a walk along

the Berliner Mauer or Berlin Wall. This route

passes through: Mauerpark famous for a large

flea market on Sundays; Bernauer Strasse with

remnants of the Wall; Checkpoint Charlie - the

border control between East and West Germany

in the past; and Eastside Gallery with murals

painted by 118 artists worldwide on a section of

the remaining wall. Also, museums and gal-

leries scattered around present interesting

exhibits. The historical Alexander Platz which

used to host East German protests for unifica-

tion is home to an outdoor display called

‘Friedliche Revolution 1989/90.’ In addition,

DDR Museum gives a glance of the life and cul-

ture in the former East Germany, whose fasci-

nating collections made me imagine how life in

North Korea would be like.

Artistic Mecca Charged with

Creative Energy

A massive urban development plan was estab-

lished for the desolate site where the Wall used

to stand. The venue became a contesting ground

for the world’s most prominent architects - with

architects such as Norman Foster of England,

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe of Germany, Daniel

Libeskind of Poland, and Renzo Piano demon-

strating their mastery. In particular, as if boast-

ing the city’s transformation to a cutting-edge

contemporary city, Potsdamer Platz was packed

with 30 or so ultra-modern buildings with mul-

tiple functions, garnering wide attention from

all over the world. The most famous of all the

buildings in Potsdamer Platz is the Sony Center.

Its unique façade capped with a huge

umbrella-shaped roof made it one of Berlin’s

premier new landmarks and the 21st century’s

most monumental architecture. More brilliant at

night with colorful lightings, Sony Center has

become an attraction visited by 70,000 people

on average every day.

Creative energy was not just confined to

advanced buildings only. Inside a deserted fac-

tory compound of a former East German

region, daring graffiti-filled walls are the out-

let for the passion of young artists. Berlin just

after unification looked like Soho, New York

City, after the economic crisis in the 1970’s.

Young artists from around the world, then,

began to occupy the city by setting up ateliers

in empty buildings and factories. 20 years on,

Berlin has turned into one of the hottest art city

in the world, being home to 600 art galleries

and 6,000 or so residing artists.

Rebirth: World’s Greatest Art City

The most noteworthy of all art genres in

Berlin is contemporary art. Whilst both New

York and Paris are the sphere of activity for

‘already established’ artists, Berlin is the stage

for rising and promising young artists.

만박물관과갤러리등도흥미로운전시를선보인다. 동독의통일집회의역사적장

소였던알렉선더광장(Alexander platz)에서는자유혁명1989/90(Friedliche Revolution

1989/90)라는야외전시가마련되어있다. 또구동독의삶과문화를엿볼수있는

DDR박물관은북한의모습까지상상케하는흥미로운내용으로가득차있다.

+ 창조적에너지가넘치는예술의메카로거듭나다

장벽이무너진후베를린은변화의기회를맞았다. 독일통일수도로서의새로운

탄생을공표하며베를린을재정비하기로했다. 그래서베를린시는장벽이철거된

황량한대지에대대적인도시개발계획을세웠다. 이곳은세계유수의건축가들의

각축장이되었고영국의노먼포스터, 독일의미스반데어로에, 폴란드의다니엘

리베스킨트, 렌조피아노와같은거장이최고의실력을뽐냈다. 특히포츠다머광

장(Potsdamer platz)은최첨단현대도시로의변모를뽐내듯30여개의복합기능을가

진초현대식건물들로채워져세계의주목을받았다. 포츠다머광장에서가장유명

한건축물은소니센터Sony Center다. 건물과건물위를거대한우산으로살짝덮어놓

은듯한독특한외관이베를린의새로운랜드마크이자21세기의기념비적인건축

물로손꼽힌다.

창조적에너지는최첨단건축물에서만머물지않았다. 버려진구동독지역의공

장안, 도발적인그래피티로가득찬담벼락에서젊은아티스트들의열정이뿜어져

museum of art- is a good place to check out art

from Germany and the world. The museum’s

collection is rated the best in Germany in terms

of contemporary art, including works of

famous German artists such as Gerhard Richter

and Joseph Beuys, as well as big name pop

artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein

and Anselm Kiefer. In addition to the rather stat-

ic art-viewing, it’s nice to go for a stroll around

streets clustered with galleries on a sunny day.

Linienstrasse and Auguststrasse in Mitte at the

heart of Berlin feel like Samcheong-dong in

Seoul. There are more than 50 galleries to visit,

with art bookstores as well as atmospheric cafes

and restaurants strewn all over the places.

Berlin left behind its historical misfortune

and got a second lease of life as art city. You can

forget about the image of a bleak grey city por-

trayed in the film Wings of Desire. Grey shad-

ows have lifted for dynamic rainbow colors

such as art, freedom, and creativity. The suc-

cess story of Berlin should be very pleasant

news to all art lovers.

나온다. 통일직후의베를린은1970년대경제가허물어진뉴욕의소호와도같았

다. 텅빈건물과공장에세계의젊은예술가들이아뜰리에를꾸리면서베를린을점

거해갔다. 그렇게20년이지난지금베를린은600개의갤러리와6천여명의아티

스트가살고있는세계에서가장핫한아트시티로변모했다.

+재탄생: 세계최고의아트시티

베를린의예술중에서도가장눈여겨봐야할것은현대미술이다. 뉴욕과파리가

‘이미유명해진’아티스트들의활동무대라면베를린은촉망받으며떠오르는젊

은예술가들을위한무대다. 국내에도잘알려진덴마크출신아티스트인올라퍼엘

리아슨Olaufur Eliasson, 독일의안드레아스구르스키Andreas Gursky 등이베를린을중

심으로활동한다. 국립현대미술관인함부르거반호프Hamburger Bahnhof는독일은

물론세계현대미술의흐름과걸작을즐기기에좋은장소다. 현대미술분야에서

독일내에서가장뛰어나다고평가받는함부르거반호프의컬렉션은게르하르트

리히터, 요셉보이스등독일유명현대작가들과앤디워홀, 로이리히텐슈타인, 안

젤름키퍼등의팝아트거장을포괄한다. 정적인미술감상외에, 화창한날이라면

갤러리가모여있는거리로산책을나서는것도좋다. 베를린의중심인미테Mitte의

리니언거리(Linien str.)와아우구스트거리(August str.)는한국의삼청동과같은느낌이

오랫동안반쪽신세였던베를린은불과20년만에독일뿐만아니

라유럽, 나아가세계의예술중심도시로빠르게자리잡아가고있

다. 현재가장젊고활기찬예술의도시를한곳꼽으라면많은사람

들이주저없이이도시를꼽을만큼베를린곳곳에는예술가들의창

의성과번뜩이는재치를엿볼수있는장소가많다. 유네스코세계

유산, 아방가르드갤러리, 세계적영화제와매일1,500개가넘게펼

쳐지는각종이벤트까지, 이도시를예술도시라부를이유는수없

이많다. 꼭유명한미술관이나휘황찬란한건축물들을찾아가지않

더라도골목한구석, 대학가의모퉁이에서만나게되는작품이나

장소들에서특별한영감을받게되는곳이바로베를린이기도하다.

430여개의갤러리가있고6천명이넘는예술가들이활동하는

베를린에서도베를린예술대학이갖는위치는특별하다. 예술대학

곳곳에서는연중다양한전시가펼쳐지는곳이기도하거니와, 지금

도4,500여명의학생들이미술, 건축/미디어/디자인, 음악, 공연예

술의네가지분야로나뉘어진코스에서자신만의세계를쌓아올리

고있는이곳에가면세상에서가장신선한(?) 아이디어를엿볼수

있을지도모를일이다.

베를린동쪽끝, 슈프레Spree강가에는서울중심가의‘망치질하

는사람’으로도우리에게친숙한보로프스키의또다른거대작품인

분자인간(Molecule Man)이있다. 세계여러도시중그의설치작품한

점안가진도시가없다는사실만으로그의‘흔한’작품들을평가절

하할필요는없다. 대신강가를따라천천히걸으며, 어디서든눈에

들어오는저분자인간을바라보는것만으로도당신의산책은충분

히가치가있다. 그밖에베를린곳곳의건물과공공장소앞에있는

버디베어역시무심코지나치기엔아까운작품이며, 무엇보다세계

디자인의역사에큰획을그은바우하우스의디자인을볼수있는바

우하우스박물관(Bauhaus-Archiv Museum)도빼놓지말것.

Molecule Man분자인간T H E A R T I S T 1942년미국보스턴에서태어난조너선보로프스키는미니멀리즘과

팝아트를접목한예술작품을선보여왔다. 그의대표작인망치질하는인간(Hammering Man)은

서울뿐만아니라프랑크푸르트와바젤, LA, 뉴욕등여러도시의랜드마크가되었을정도로

세계적인유명세를탔다.

T H E S C U L P T U R E 높이가30미터에달하는이작품은1997년에베를린동쪽슈프레

강가에세워졌다. 보로프스키는“분자인간에대한첫번째구상은1977년까지거슬러

올라간다”며, “겉으로보기에단단하고복잡한것들도결국은물과공기가대부분을차지하는작은

분자들의집합체라는사실에푹빠졌었다”고말한바있다. 또한서로를향한두사람의형상또한

서로중심을향하는성질이있는분자가모인집합체로서의인간을묘사한것이라말했다.

Buddy Bear버디베어T H E H I S T O R Y 어른키보다약간더큰크기의유리섬유에색을입혀

만든버디베어는바로이곳베를린에서태어났다. 사업가부부인클라우스

헤를리츠Klaus Herlitz와에바Eva헤를리츠가조각가로만스트로블Roman

Strobl과협력해처음만든버디베어를베를린거리에세운것이2001년. 여러

아티스트의참여로그수는350여개에달했고, 각각의버디베어들은도움이

필요한아이들을위한경매에서팔려나가현재베를린곳곳의건물앞에

서있게되었다.

T H E U N I T E D B U D D Y B E A R 유나이티드버디베어는인류가

서로를더깊이알고이해하고신뢰해평화로운세상을만들자는모토아래

140여개의국가를상징하는버디베어들을모아전시하는행사로,

서울(2005년)뿐만아니라, 놀랍게도평양(2008년)에서도열린바있다.

Bauhaus-Archiv Museum바우하우스박물관

T H E H I S T O R Y 바우하우스를모르고는현대건축사와디자인을

이야기할수없다. 꼭건축에관심이깊은사람이아니더라도한번쯤들어보았을

만큼바우하우스가영향을준분야는너무나광대해서, 그철학은오늘날에도

우리가쓰는가구와생활공간에이르기까지깊이뿌리내려숨쉬고있다.

T H E P L A C E 그대단한이름에비해박물관자체는크지않다. 대충보면

20여분이면모두볼수있지만, 무료인음성안내를들으며감상하면

바우하우스와디자인예술에대해충분히깊고넓게사색할수있는공간이기도

하다. 여러디자이너들을비롯해클레와칸딘스키등미술에서널리이름을

알린바우하우스출신예술가들의이름과활동을보는것도또다른재미다.

Hauptwache하우프트바헤

하우프트바헤는‘주감시탑’이라는뜻으로, 1730년에

지어진이바로크양식의건물은오랫동안감옥으로

이용되었다. 지금은프랑크푸르트의쇼핑과미식,

나이트라이프의중심지인자일Zeil의끝자락에위치해

있다. 뢰머광장(Römerbergpl.)을비롯한구시가의관광

명소에인접해있으며, 특히하우프트바헤주변의

거리들은프랑크푸르트에서제일가는보행자

천국이기도하다. 대중교통의허브이기도해

관광객으로프랑크푸르트를찾는다면가장흔히

찾게되는장소다.

Goethe Haus 괴테하우스작지만결코작지않은도시, 프랑크푸르트의문화를대표하는아이콘이괴테다. 괴테가태어나고

자란괴테하우스에서그의유년시절모습을엿볼수있다. 그는이집에서<파우스트>와<젊은

베르테르의슬픔>을썼다. 당시최상류층에속한집이었던괴테의집은4층짜리단독주택으로,

층별로각각용도가다른방이3개씩있고방의용도에따라색깔도제각각이다. 특히괴테가

태어난방과서재, 괴테의누나와함께인형극을하고놀았던인형극의방이인기가많다.

Alte Oper 알테오퍼알테오퍼는‘구오페라하우스’라는뜻으로, 1880년에건축가리하르트

루케Richard Lucae가설계했다. 2차세계대전때폭격으로크게망가지기

Spanning 73km east-west and 41km north-south, Jeju island is the largest island in

Korea. What makes this island special is its origin and climate. It has risen about

700~1,200 thousand years ago when lava spewed from the bottom of the sea. Mt.

Halla-san with height of 1,950m, hundreds of secondary volcanoes called “Oreums,”

and natural lava tubes are perfectly preserved and designated as UNESCO’s World

Heritage. The island is warmer than any other places in Korea, making it the best place

for winter vacation and sports training camp site.

While Mt. Halla-san, Seongsan-ilchul-bong and beautiful beaches covering its coast is

somewhat “classic” tourist spots, there are also other places that has newly founded;

Olle-gil is certainly the hottest one among them. “Olle” is a local dialect referring to the

small paths between houses. Countless narrow pathways are spread throughout the

island from the coast to hundreds of Oreums. People found that the landscapes sur-

rounding these roads are beautiful enough to be attractive hiking trails, and from 2007

the trails has started to be designated as different courses with numbers. Currently there

are 18 courses between the east coast and all the way to northern-west coast. You can get

a map and information at the Jeju International Airport.

You can also easily find a cozy and modern-style resorts and hotels in the island. Major

five-starred hotels like Lotte, Shilla and Haebichi are located at southern coast, while

other resorts and individual pensions are everywhere. Seopjikoji can be a nice spot for

one who looks for big resort facilities and beautiful landscape. A famous rocky cliff with

lighthouse is only a walking distance from Phoenix Island equipped with individual villa

and huge resort facilities.

ommend a single dish to travelers. Every food here -

you can find Ojo-haenyeo-ui-jip, meaning “the house

of female divers in Ojo,” in the southern part of the

island to eat Korea’s best abalone sushi and abalone

soup. Yetnal-yetjeok, meaning “once upon a time,” is

famous for Dombae-gogi, a sliced boiled pork dish. If

you are pretty good at eating raw fishes and spicy

Korean sources, you’d better to find Pogoo-sikdang,

meaning dockyard restaurant, and try mool-hoe, a

cold soup with raw fishes and red pepper source.

In this year Germany has celebrated 200th anniversary of

birth of Schumann. What about the year 2011?

Next year we have 200th birthday of Franz Liszt. Thus

there are very nice events we’d like to invite music-lovers

from Korea. There is a list of events in Germany starting from

February next year. We’ll also organize special tours for

Korean travelers of course.

What do you think is the charm of traveling Germany?

Among Germany’s many special points, I think its cultural

diversity to be an important one. We normally say Germany

as heart of Europe, and the “heart” here has many different

meanings from geographic position to economic power.

There are few countries which have nine neighboring coun-

tries like Germany, and all of them have distinctive cultural

heritages. Germany is on the crossroads between those vari-

ous cultures, and has been “pumping” those different cul-

tures all around Europe.

As Germany is Europe’s No. 1 destination for Korea’s

business travelers, it must be important to promote

Germany as a charming tourist spot.

As a national tourist office we tell our Korean partners in

connection with airlines and the chamber of commerce

what is possible in Germany. We keep promoting what

those business people can do and experience in their extra

time. Germany surely can offer interesting experiences after

their business has been taken care of - for example, if you are

in Frankfurt you can get to Rhine valley only within an hour;

even if you stay within city center, you can enjoy great

German wines, cultural heritages, and most importantly

German people who are “always” very nice. That is what

we’d like to promote to visitors in their business purpose.

Could you recommend any other places besides Berlin and

Munich, which are already well-known to Korean travelers?

Germany has no city that can be said “No. 1.”The power of

Germany has never been concentrated in one city or its capi-

tol. Historically Germany has never ruled by one power -

instead it has been always small towns and cities which had

money and the idea of citizenship. For this reason you can

see and experience totally different things in each cities. Each

city is very self-proud, self-confident, and has its own ideas

and images - and such differences are clearly visible. I think it

is a true strength of Germany, and to answer your question,

I’d say that there is no such thing that you should do, or you

should not do in this country.

념이없다는것을강조하고싶습니다. 역사적으로도독일의정치와

문화를이끌어온것은어느특정도시나왕이아니라수백개의작은

마을과도시들의연합된힘과시민정신이었습니다. 그결과독일의
