Lehigh Carbon Community College officially kicked off the 50th anniversary celebrations during convocation as hundreds of faculty, staff and administrators were treated to tours of the Allentown, Tamaqua and Jim Thorpe sites. The site tours included informational presentations on the unique courses, programs and facilities, a walk through the history and notable attributes of each site with local historians and storytellers, and a lovely catered lunch at well-known restaurants in each of the areas. The following day was “50 and Fabulous Friday” with more than 200 LCCC faculty, staff and administrators converged on the lawn of the Schnecksville campus to form a giant “50.” The

incredible event was captured by an aerial photo. The celebration also served as a farewell to summer as well as the formal start of a year-long recognition of the college’s history. The “50 and Fabulous Friday” activities included food, 1960s era music courtesy of Chris Andrew and WXLV, and more entertainment. Highlights for the remainder of the year will include community outreach events, national speakers, recognition of 50 notable alumni, friends and events, and commencement ceremony in May 2016 in the PPL arena in downtown Allentown, where the college first held classes. In 1966, the State Board of Education approved the formal application of what was then known as Lehigh County Community College.

The college would like to thank the many LCCC alumni volunteers who came to support the college during Musikfest. The alumni volunteers joined the Alumni Association and the Career Development Center in the Festplatz serving beer and selling food tickets to the thousands of Musikfest attendees.

LCCC Saddened at the Loss of a Legend

In August, the college community paused with sadness after learning that former LCCC men’s basketball coach and NBA legend Darryl Dawkins passed away suddenly from a heart attack. Dawkins was the college’s head basketball coach from 2009 to 2011, and we are thankful for the impact he had on LCCC during his time he dedicated to the students and athletes at the college. Dawkins was also well-known for breaking the backboard as a newly drafted player right out of high school for the Philadelphia 76ers in 1975. Dawkins played for the 76ers for 10 years before playing for the Detroit Pistons and the New

Jersey Nets. He retired from the NBA in the 1988-89 season. His coachinglegacy began shortly thereafter with IZOD Scholastic basketball team, the Newark Express ABA, the PA Valley Dawgs United States Basketball League (USBL) and the Winnipeg Cyclones, IBL, as well as local youth teams. “If anyone ever told me that I would be coaching, I may not have believed them,” noted Dawkins to LCCC when he began his coaching career at the college. Dawkins had been a beloved celebrity and known community fixture in the Lehigh Valley where he lived with his wife and four children.

Laura McHugh (seated, third from left in photo), executive producer at PBS 39, spoke with journalism students last week about strategies for finding good newspaper stories. The students in the journalism class comprise the staff of The Paw Print, LCCC’s student newspaper, and were intrigued to learn more about McHugh’s techniques and words of seasoned wisdom in the industry. PBS 39 Presents at the College

Lehigh Carbon Community College will host the Lehigh Valley premier of the documentary film Finding Jenn’s Voice on September 25 and a public showing of the film on September 26 in the Lisa Scheller and Wayne Woodman Community Services Center ballroom at the college’s Schnecksville campus. The September 25 VIP event, for which a donation of $25 per person is suggested, supports the scholarship that was set up in Jennifer’s name with the LCCC Foundation. The reception will include heavy hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be held at 5:30 p.m. and the film will begin at 7 p.m. Following the film, a panel discussion is planned with representatives from LCCC’s faculty and area domestic violence agencies, as well as filmmaker Tracy Schott. The public showing will be on Saturday, September 26, beginning at 3 p.m. Doors to the Community Services Center open at 2:30 p.m. Finding Jenn’s Voice, about Allentown resident and LCCC veterinary technology student Jennifer Snyder, is an award-winning documentary film that reveals a little known fact: Homicide is the leading cause of death during pregnancy. Jennifer was murdered in 2011 by her married boyfriend after he learned that she was pregnant. A week after Jennifer’s death, filmmaker Tracy Schott was approached by Jennifer’s aunt to commit the story and the troubling broader social dialogue to film. In production for more than four years, the film features the commentary of many intimate partner violence experts, while conversations with women who have survived homicide attempts put a face on the problem and give a voice to the victims. Finding Jenn’s Voice is a suspenseful and emotional ride through the terror of living with the threat of being killed by someone that you love. LCCC Hosts Documentary Film Premier

Mary Badham, actress best known as Jean Louise “Scout” Finch in the film To Kill a Mockingbird, will be guest speaker at the college at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 15. The reading, in Berrier Hall, is free and open to the public. Badham will read from Mockingbird, as well as Harper Lee’s recently released Go Set a Watchman. The talk is part of the college’s 50th anniversary celebration events and will take place during the American Library Association’s Banned Books Week, an annual celebration of the freedom to read. Badham was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, at the time the youngest actress (age 10) ever nominated in this category. After To Kill a Mockingbird in 1962, she appeared in two other films, This Property is Condemned in 1966, with Robert Redford and Natalie Wood, and Let’s Kill Uncle, 1966. Badham also played Sport Sharewood in The Bewitchin’ Pool, the final episode of the original Twilight Zone series. Currently, Badham is an art restorer and gives talks to promote the book and the impact it has had in literature.

LCCC Offering Information Session on Disney Co-op Program

LCCC will offer a cooperative work experience for students at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, or Disneyland, California, during the spring 2016 semester. The co-op program allows students to earn six college credits as they spend one semester working, learning and living at Disney World or Disneyland. Since the program began in September 1989, more than 600 LCCC students have participated. An informational meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m., in the Academic Resource Center in Room 102 in Schnecksville.
